Title: Re: "Around the World for Free!"
Post by: apskip on June 02, 2009, 02:11:34 PM
EAST AFRICA

Alex and Zsolt start this episode on Day 96 leaving Arusha Tanzania for a broder crossing to Kenya's Masai Mara. That comes with lots of color from views of Masai warriors hopping and women dancing. If hopping were an Olympic sport, I'll bet that Masai warriors would win gold, silver and bronze medals. Alex and Zsolt are hosted by Lensington Tours. Alex agreed to do some labor at their camp in return for accommodations and food. That work starts with using a machete to cut weeds and also a strange rake with nails for its prongs, widely spaced. Next Alex transported water barrels and emptied them into a water tank.

On a tour of the bush, the guide points out leopard tortoise and hippopotamus tracks. He states that there are 200 hippos in a water hole. Hyena tracks are later spotted, apparently chasing some prey. Elephants and lions are seen [lus zebras, musk ox and kudu. A tour of the Masai village is arranged by the Kensington security head, who lives there. There are 100 children in school.

Alex and Zsolt head for Nairobi. They made a decision for safety reasons to abandon Africa and move on to Asia. From Nairobi they want to fly to Mumbai, presumably beacuse of cheap airfares there on Kenya Airways. First, they visit the By George Orphanage, which is caring for 300 children.  A network member who is also a personal friend of Alex's, Dov in Jacksonville FL, pays for Alex and Zsolt at Christmas 2008 to have 2 nights in a decent hotel. There is a sightseeing period for about a week. Alex are contacted by Simon back in South Africa who knows someone (his name is something like Kibera) who can take Alex and Zsolt to his home and later to a friend of their's who has an available "home office" at a separate location from his home. He brings in bedding and their is a cafeteria in the building which he urges Alex to use at no cost (he is going to settle the bill after they leave). There is a presidential election about to happen in Nairobi. The whole region is under martial law with multiple checkpoints every mile. The opposition has planned a huge rally for Jan. 3 in Uhuru Park. There is fear of great bloodshed. Another friend is working for the communications company KenTV that plans to cover the rally with video camera and reporter. Alex wants to tag along. They take a practice run in getting to that park and 2 shots ring out. It was extremely difficult and likely to be impossible the day of the rally. Alex abandoned his plans and at the last minute the rally is cancelled.

Alex get a prepaid ticket from the Vodafone group in Praetoria led by Low to fly to Mumbai. There is not enough time to get a proper visa, so he plans to adopt an alternate approach of a 72 hour temporary visa suggested by Indian embassy staff in Nairobi. When he lands in Mumbai, he is escorted to a quarantine area and told his information was not correct and he was being deported back to Nairobi because no transit visas are ever available once in India. He attempted to get some local officials to help the situation but was not given time by the authorities. They got him on the next flight back to Nairobi within hours of arrival.  Alex and Zsolt were now stranded in Nairobi airport and their luggage takes a while to show up. They get financial suport from Robert Hutchings (3rd time) and Debbie and Walter Stallcraft(who Alex and Zsolt stayed with in Florence SC on the first night of this odyssey) to buy a ticket to Bangkok.

After landing in Bangkok on Day 110 of the trip, they taste some Thai food, which Alex loves (it's my favorite cuisine so I understand this). Two local members of the network, Claire and Bo arrive unexpected to pick them up, courtesy of Lori in Germantown MD. They introduce Alex and Zsolt to Mr. Nap who provids accommodations for Alex and Zsolt in his home. The women take Alex and Zsolt out for more thai food, including grilled meat with many spices and spicy noodle soup. They go sightseeing around Bangkok. What a contrast to Nairobi! However, to be fair Bangkok has had its share of difficult politcally-based problem days in the past year.

I placed this note here intially, but was advised to also place it elsewehere. I have expanded what i put on elsewhere, so go there for a slightly more complete statement. This show is on History Channel, which I reported incorrectly as National Geographic Channel.

A new series started last Sunday night at 10pm and repeating at 11pm EDT. It is retracing the route of U.S. newsman Henry Stanley to meet British explorer David Livingstone in 1871. It took that expedition from March 12 to Nov. 10 (8 months) in 1871 to go from the coast of Tanzania to Ujiji on the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika. This expedition is attempting to do 950 miles on land in shorter time. The team of 4 is expedition leader Pasqual (a famous expedition guide), Mireya (actually Dr. Mireya the anthropologist), Benedict and Kevin (journalist), plus a team of about 12 porters. The first show started with the expedition hiring a dhow to transport them 20 miles from Zanzibar Island to Bagamoyo Tanzanian shore across the Zanzibar Strait. This is almost the exact opposite of the trip taken by all AR11 teams from north of DarEsSalaam to Zanzibar Island by dhow.

This show is not for everyone. The expedition is continuously dealing with challenges regarding snakes, water supply, bugs, disease, sunburn, etc. The bickering between Benedict, Kevin and Mireya and Paqual also seems to be constant. The plethora of wildlife they view along the route can make up for that.

Try it. You'll probably like it. You can go to the History Channel Expedition Africa site to catch the full first episode.

THAILAND

Alex and Zsolt attempt to find  acccommodations at 2 temples and on meditation center without success. Claire offers her home, but the catch is that 15 people (grandmother, 2 aunts, father, mother, siblings and cousins) already live there. They cook a dish called Prao Tai consisting of crushed garlic, chilis, chicken, what looks like bok choy, oyster sauce, cooked and served over rice.  One of the aunts has a hairdressing salon next door and offers Alex a haircut after 4 months on the road.

Wat Say Yong Temple agrees to house them for 2 nights. They converse with the senior monk in rudimentary  English. There is no bed but no curfew. Alex rises with the monks at 5am to go collect breakfast donations throughout the neighborhood. The same happens for lunch, but there is no dinner. The Chao Phraya Port is nearby. In buddhism, charity = merit and humility is highly prized. Two monks tell each other what they have done wrong on that day already and one has to stay lower because he is less humble and needs reminders of how he should act. They leave the monastery the next morning with the senior monk paying for their taxi to meet another network person who will house them.

Frank is a network member who wants to help. He appears to devote his life to taking care of Alex and Zsolt for the next day or two. He buys every meal for them. He takes them to the Red Light District on Potphong Road. They find that the women are mostly in the sex trade and are very agressive. Frank buys Alex a ticket to get to Koh Sahmui where a restaurant/resort owner has work that Alex can trade for room and board. Frank is a consultant for time magazine in Thailand and Cambodia. He has the website 2Bangkok.com. From him they learn that Bangkok is "like Los Angeles", which is approximately correct as Los Angeles County has 9.9 million people and Bangkok about 9 million.

Alex and Zsolt take the overnight bus to southern Thailand and a boat out to Koh Samui, with Alex paid for round-trip by Frank. They are staying as guests of the Secret Garden Resort and Restaurant. Alex's work is to develop marketing materials for the resort and restaurant. He decides to give them a video highlighting the features of the place.

Alex and Zsolt are taken by another local fishing at Costa Moi. Back in Koh Samui, Alex gets to taste bugs as the main course. There are giant water bugs, beetle larvae, beetles, crickets, grasshoppers and a frog. Yummy! What Alex won't do for compelling TV. He does try to give some away to passing American tourists.

They go to Koh Samui Canopy Adventures for zip-lining.

Next Alex and Zsolt leave Koh Samuui on the boat going almost back to Bangkok, but they divert and head to the Thai/Cambodian border and cross to Poipet, a dusty and dirty town on the make. Alex states that "everyone here is trying to make a buck; I don't have a buck." They stay one night with 2 monks they met while wandering through their neighborhood. There is immense poverty here and again at Siem Reap when they reach there. In order to get there in the"no money" spirit, Alex had to accept a ride from a Phnom Penh person who drove up from Phnom Penh to Poipet, 450 km, to make the 160km trip to Siem Reap. Alex and Zsolt get a very brief tour of Angkor Wat before it closes that day.

Another reason to get to Siem Reap is that they are offered the chance to work "for humanity" as medicines and other things are delivered to children in rural villages of Siem Reap Province as coordinated by the Red Cross. Alex helps to carry mosquito nets worth about $5 to people's homes but they must pledge to not divert them into fishing nets. Alex and Zsolt get to Phnom Penh on a boat going from Siem Reap on Tonle Sap all the way to Phnom Penh. I have previously conceptualized Tonle Sap as a very large lake, but the river that flows out of it is also named Tonle Sap.

When they get to Phnom Penh, their host takes them to a Thai restaurant owned by his friend. He also takes them to the entertainment section; it much tamer than the one in Bangkok. Alex watches the dancers pulsating and even tries to kick it up a notch.

CAMBODIA

This country shows off its scars from the Pol Pot regime. I guess visiting killing fields is now what tourism is about for those Cambodians not able to get to Angkor Wat. Alex start at the Tuol Sleng Museum. The question of why Pol Pot chose to govern by slaughtering innocent Cambodians, particularly anyone educated, intelligentsia, or lawyers, is still open beacuse no one really knows.  There are a lot of his victims and many more who are relatives of victims. Alex talked to multiple people who were the sole survivors of large families massacred over time.

Next they went to the Choung Ek killing fields 7 km from Phnom Penh, with its Tower of Skulls the gruesome result of what was done there. Next they visit the so-called Russian Market, but nobody can say why it is named that.

Ingredients are purchased to make Tom Yum soup based on lemongrass, shallots and mushrooms. It is one of my favorites. After they have finished eating it, Alex's host states that they have really had Tom Kha soup due to the coconut milk in it.

A young woman is proud of her new job that is miles away but will pay her $100, presumably each month.

Alex and Zsolt get bus tickets from their host to Ho Chhi Minh City in Vietnam 6 hours away. They find an urban center of 8 to 9 million people. Their host in Phnom Penh had given them $20 for making Internet connections and getting around. They spend it at an Internet cafe and on a taxi. Their new host is Todd, who allows them to camp out in his office. He buys them a train ticket to Cu Cho, a wildlife rescue center. There is the countryside they view bomb craters, displays of bombs and the Cu Cho tunnel which assisted the Viet Cong over 40 years earlier in the Vietnam War. It is day 130 of their circumnavigation.

Next they went on an excursion to "the beach" maybe 8 hours from ho Chi Minh City by train. Alex could not find the right train. The one he got on went instead to Wang Tran, with its waterfront and Phu Quoc Island.  There Alex and Zsolt celebrated the Chinese New Year or Tet famous for the 1968 Vietcong offensive. They celebrate with sparklers and fireworks.

Thye learn that Lilly and Preston in Maryland have been following their progress and provided Alex with a airplane ticket to go from Ho Chi Minh City to San Francisco. Alex gets a job cleaning toilets in a beachfront hotel. He earns enough to take a diving excursion which looks like flippers and snuba to me on day 144. He borrows a moped from the hotel for one hour to see the local area. Finally he gets to Saigon airport.

GeorgiaPeach,  Do you have any inside scoopage about season 2?

I follow an AmazingRacers list on Twitter and all of a sudden Alex tweets today

I have received many messages about the next season of Around The World For Free. Well...it's coming soon everyone. Stay tuned!

He hadn't tweeted since last June!

Then I clicked on the facebook link that you posted upthread and saw more activity.  Do you have any insight?

I stand corrected, as I was hasty in posting old, irrelevant news on ATWTFF. Here is a link to the Around the World Productinos website, which mentions absolutely nothing about season 2, nor can I find anything on it anywhere:

http://www.aroundtheworldproductions.com/ATWP/Intro.html

I have not idea whether WGN will televise it again, but there is also nothing on the WGN website either.
Title: Re: Re: "Around the World for Free!"

From WGN-TV, which many cable and satellite systems offer:

ATWFF - the TV show premieres Thursday April 16, 2009 on WGN America! The WGN website  is exclusively featuring much of the original content of ATWFF, and will be updating it each week.

Thanks for the reply apskip but that's from last year's season 1.  All of the recent activity is about a second season.

Also, if you recall, the program didn't do too well ratings wise on WGN.  I'd be surprised if any future season is broadcast on WGN.
Title: Re: Re: "Around the World for Free!"
Post by: theschnauzers on March 20, 2010, 01:30:31 PM
IS there a current ATWFF website? If so, what is the URL?

WGN purloined the season one site during the season one run, and many of the links never worked for me then or since.

I wasn't posting here then, but I found it remarkable now many place Alex went to when he and Zac (and Burton) filmed season one that TAR hadn't been to that TAR has since filmed at (especially in Chile, Cambodia and Vietnam (That I can recall offhand). I also think that if Phil ever decided ti retire from TAR, Alex would make a perfect replacement thanks to the ATWFF gig; he's done the best job of any alumni Racer in following Phil's NOW philosophy.

I haven't done much TAR detective work in the last couple of years but I'm having a lot of fun tracking this down.

It appears to me that all of the activity started with this tweet.

Source : http://twitter.com/hanswatson   It looks like Hans tweeted from the SXSW Interactive conference earlier this week.

Like all good clues, that tweet refers to another one.  Soohoo CBS is Anthony Soohoo.  From his linkedin page, look at what he's in charge of:

No wonder Alex is excited.  I never thought we'd see season 2.

eta.  theschnauzers, It appears from apskip's link that they have taken down the clips for the show on WGN's web site.  The facebook link that Peach posted does have a few clips though but it's nowhre near as comprehensive as the old WGN site.

Otherwise, you'll have to travel to Greece to view the program.   :duno:   It's currently being shown on the new Greece FX network http://www.fxtv.gr/Series/Around/Episodes

Now that they've figured iut how to extend the series, Jeff is a pretty good pick yo be in front of the camera.

It does mean that TPTB have figured out that TAR is a prerequisite for hosting ATWFF for a season.

Since CBS has acquired the rights and is now backing the project not sure what channel it will on this year.  The first season aired on WGN.

I agree Peach and RFW...Jeff is a great choice for this project.  He'll do great, the first season was fun, I can't wait to follow along again.

Michael, it hasn't been announced when it will start yet, speculation is running anywhere from 6/23 to just after the July 4th.

Wow,  This is great news.  I only watched the WGN episodes so I will now get a chance to see the trip from the start on the web.

I see that Jeff is starting in July.  Source : http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2010/06/11/big-brother-amazing-race-star-in-new-tv-show-around-the-wo/

I noticed from one of RealityFreakWill's posts that Jeff has a fan club.  I hope that they have enough funds to help Jeff with some of his air fares.  For those you watched season 1, Robert H. from Orlando was probably Jeff's number one benefactor regarding airline tickets.  The gal from South Carolina was also a great help.

I did record season one's episodes and saw that Alex was still in Nairobi, Kenya on Day 103.  Jeff is  going to need help to do his trip a lot faster.

Maybe his fan club can get him off of the North America continent ASAP.  They surely must have representatives in one of the large N.E. cities (Boston, N.Y., Phil, D.C)

I just can't wait.

Sorry, Peach but I think he needs to leave before he could get to Georgia.   :'(

We will offer help, but it is ultimately, Jeff that gets to decide where he wants to go and probably getting him out of the states will be the best thing to do........

AT&T, American Back CBS Web Series 'Around the World for Free'
Network's Interactive Unit Looks to Ramp Up Original Online Programming

LOS ANGELES (AdAge.com) -- CBS Interactive is rolling out a web series whose entire narrative will depend exclusively on the two most hard-to-find attributes in digital entertainment: sponsors and active fans.

Luckily for CBS, the former is already taken care of when it rolls out "Around the World for Free," an online spinoff of "The Amazing Race" that makes its debut July 26 on CBS.com and other CBS Interactive properties.

The series will chronicle the real-time travels of Jeff Schroeder, a veteran of CBS reality shows "Big Brother" and "The Amazing Race," as he attempts to globe-trot without so much as a dollar to his name, relying on strangers and online viewers to dictate and potentially accommodate his every move -- all with the aid of integrated sponsors AT&T, to connect Mr. Schroeder to his fans, and American Airlines, to fly him to his various destinations.

The ambitious premise echoes that of 19 Entertainment's "If I Can Dream," a reality series on online video site Hulu that also unfolds in real-time and allows fans to vote in new cast members, with integrations from presenting sponsors Pepsi and Ford along the way. And just as "Dream" got more than a little bit of traditional media exposure from cross-promotion on 19 Entertainment's "American Idol," "Around the World for Free" will be heavily promoted on CBS Corp.'s radio properties, online audience network and prime-time summer lineup, particularly during the new season of "Big Brother," which makes its return July 8. Mr. Schroeder will make appearances on CBS's "The Early Show" to reach the daytime crowd as well.

CBS is also boldly going where broadcast networks have only recently dared to tread by ramping up its investment in online programming. ABC, one of the first networks to dip its toes in digital waters with the launch of Stage 9 Productions in 2008, quickly saw its web video business fizzle after producing too many web series with TV budgets and no business model or sponsor support to offset the costs. NBC has found recent success with branded web shows for American Family Insurance ("In Gayle We Trust," recently renewed for a second season) and Hidden Valley Ranch, while Fox is expected to debut new cross-platform projects from new branded-entertainment head Roger Mincheff later this year.

In the past year, CBS Interactive has produced original web series for Saturn ("Novel Adventures"), Head & Shoulders ("Heckle U"), General Motors ("The Ghost Whisperer: The Other Side") and AT&T (TV.com's "TV in a Flash"). Joe Ferreira, senior VP-general manager of the CBS Audience Network, said web series are held to different success metrics than broadcast series, so 1 million views over the course of a month is often a good benchmark compared to 14 million viewers for one night of prime time.

"The idea of a hit for us is on a bit of a smaller scale, but what we've seen for all the series we've put out there has hit all those marks," he said. "We've been doing this for two to three years, and each time we've learned something. Now we're at the point where we're really taking this to the next level."

Although the 35 short-form episodes that make up "Around the World for Free" are being produced at a fraction of what they would cost to produce for prime time (which also means less cameras, less edit time and shorter episode lengths), the cost savings do not come at the expense of quality, said Anthony Soohoo, CBS Interactive's senior VP-general manager of entertainment.

"We think we can deliver a series to the user at a level unseen in the past online," he said. "The user behavior, quality of the cameras and the emergence of social media mobile tools we can use from the advertising community as well as our users put us in a pretty unique spot to deliver something we'll be looking at years from now. We want 'Around the World for Free' to be the inflection point for a new wave of storytelling for the next few years."

Plus, by having sponsors onboard at launch, the series is already a profitable venture for CBS. "The web-original business for us is at comparable margins if not better across the line than any other entertainment properties we currently run," Mr. Soohoo said.

AT&T is expected to be featured throughout the series as an integrated mobile sponsor, and will promote the series within its own properties in the coming weeks. American Airlines, in its biggest investment in an original web series to date, will sponsor all of Mr. Schroeder's trips. Coming off a high-profile integration in last year's "Up in the Air," an unpaid placement valued to be worth as much as $14.5 million of exposure by entertainment research firm Front Row Analytics, the bar is very high for American's latest foray.

"The key to any product placement for a brand, in film, TV or online video, is relevance," said Billy Sanez, American's director of advertising and promotions. He added: "Flying Jeff [Schroeder] around the world is simply what we do for a living. We naturally take our passengers to their destinations."

"Around the World for Free" is actually the second season of a show that was originally conceived by "Amazing Race" winner Alex Boylan and "Survivor: Pearl Islands" vet Burton Roberts, produced independently and eventually acquired by CBS. The archived season is currently available on a micro-site.

Oh wow...having flights covered is going to tremendously change this...that was the biggest holdup for Alex. If Jeff has flights covered, then he can really fous on having fans take him under their wings at LOCATIONS, giving us a true look at places and activities.

I think I like this better...once or twice last season Alex really had to have some people dig deep for him, this is better.

As my favorite first eliminated TAR team of all time would say,  Ah concur.

I am so jealous.  I hope Jeff does well.

DianeC, Congrats on having Zsolt join your site.  I don't know how he will have enough time in a day to first film and then edit the webisodes so they are both interesting and entertaining.  His effort and performance in season 1 was most impressive.

I  wish your site was an open one.

Hi Peach,

Just got a clarification on this article by Zsolt and this is what he said:Zsolt Luka

Hi everyone,

I just hopped on and have not had time to read all the threads, but wanted to point out a very important point that was incorrectly interpreted in the Advertising Age article: American Airlines IS NOT covering all of Jeff's flights after launch. We absolutely will need the audience's support, vitally in the international sector especially. More details to come soon, but pls do note that the flights / other transport support is indeed very much needed, still!

Thanks for the clarification Diane.

In some ways that is a shame... a couple of times on Season 1 Alex was almost begging...and that is not what the focus of this should be, imo. I love the concept of serendipity, and relying on "the kindness of strangers" (hey, I AM a southern girl), but hate it when they have to resort to panhandling (almost) anyway.

But this will be fun, I think Jeff is a dynamite choice for this!

YW..Yes, with his personality and way with ppl, he should not have to beg too much, but he can get a job maybe to help with food and shelter...Jeff is pretty resourceful from what I have seen and always ready for adventure...Ha

This sounds like a cool trip and a neat idea but I'd like to see it be even more challenging. It seems to easy to have someone buy you plane tickets or train tickets. I'd like to see them hitchhike across the world. I think the most difficult part would be crossing the waters.

I think one interesting part of this show will be to see how different countries and cultures treat them. For instance, which country or culture will be the most gracious? Which one will be the toughest to get through because of lack of generosity?

Hopefully many of you will remember Alex Boyland and his producer/camerman/soundman Zsolt Luka going "Around the World for Free" on the SGN Network one year ago. The show is back with Alex as the co-producer with Burton Roberts, Zsolt as the traveling companion and a new traveler:

Around the World For Free puts the passion back into adventure and the real back into reality!
About the show
Around the World For Free is a fully interactive online reality show. Tune in to Season 2 this summer, when The Amazing Race and Big Brother star Jeff Schroeder attempts to travel around the world in 100 days … with nothing more than a backpack and the help of an online community. Where he'll go and how he'll get there have yet to be determined, but at least he won't be alone. Fans can follow along on CBS.com every step of the way, offering tips, travel photos and even a helping hand. Sign up now for Around the World For Free updates and we’ll let you know when Jeff hits the road!

Around the World For Free's connection to CBS isn't new. Go back and watch Season 1, when The Amazing Race winner Alex Boylan traveled more than 45,000 miles through 16 countries without a penny in his pocket. Alex returns with fellow co-creator and executive producer, SURVIVOR™: Pearl Islands alumnus Burton Roberts, to produce the upcoming Season 2. Co-creator and Emmy-nominated editor Zsolt Luka will reprise his role as field producer, directing, filming, and editing the series on the fly.

Hi Vega,
From reading on our site what Zsolt has said,,I can tell you that in the last season, there were NO countries that were not gracious to them and even the poorest of cultures shared their food and shelter with them..It was quite humbling he said.
So, generosity doesn't seem to be a problem..more getting into a country due to a lack of a Visa, which he said is their own fault for not doing it sooner and being more prepared...
And yes, since this is a new season, it will be interesting again how they fare!

Cupcake, Will : Thanks for the tweets.  Jeff and Zsolt could be brothers.

DianeC, Thanks for the clarification.  I hope the show gets lots of publicity in order to make more people aware of Jeff's trip.  As I mentioned up thread, Alex relied on a select group of people for airline tickets.  The following is from apskip's excellent recap from last year:

Quote

So you can see, Alex was dependent upon just a few benefactors.  Also, I can't recall at this time who paid for his last big trip from Asia back to the U.S.  But without their help, Alex would have failed and so will Jeff.

If you have a chance, can you ask Zsolt what day to day role, if any,  Alex will have on this season?  I realize he won't be on camera but was wondering if he had a daily role back at the home office.

Thanks

Alex will be in close contact with us on the road on a daily (hourly) basis and will weigh in on the creative output on an ongoing basis. Welcome back, Alex.  I hope season 2 is a great success for you and your team.  I understand you probably won't be able to answer all of my questions but here I go anyways:

1)  Whose idea was it for Jeff to be the host, yours or CBSi?

2)  The first public mention of this season was a hint from a tweet at this year's SXSW conference.  When were you given a go by CBSi?

3)  Last time, you did video chats with The Early Show.  Are there are plans to do video chats with the viewers periodically throughout the trip?

4)  This suggestion is free of charge.  Your web site should have a Jeff tracking map, kind of like a hurricane tracking chart.  By the way, Alex, Hurricane Alex is still in the Gulf as I'm typing this.  See, it's a sign from above.  Also, you could put hyperlinks on the map that reference videos and blogs relating to the places that Jeff and Zsolt have visited.

5)  Did you send Jeff to your voice coach?  He did a good job on his promo video shot on some balcony but he sounded a lot like you when emphasizing certain adjectives.

6) Jeff and Jordan's relationship appears to be well known in the reality fan community.  Will their separation and how they deal with it be included in the show?

7) My favorite episode last year was when you and Zsolt were separated for awhile and you wandered alone all night in that northern Chilean town.  Are there any plans to separate Zsolt and Jeff for awhile and see what happens?

8 )  Since you stayed mostly in the Southern Hemisphere last time, would you like Jeff to focus on the Northern Hemisphere this time?

9)  I think you should start a tradition of always having the host bungee jump somewhere in the world.  In Amazing Race 16, Jeff wussed out and let Jordan do the high wire traversing in Chile and the bungee jump in Germany.  The jumping will do him good.

10)  I noticed that Zsolt is tweeting fairly often now.  When do you plan to have Jeff tweeting on a regular basis about the show?

I hope Jeff gets to go to some really obscure places like Coober Pedy where you and Chris went to in Amazing Race 2.

Good luck and thanks for your time.

Pedal;er:

You might want to rephrase your question to Alex about hemispheres. The route for ATWFF1 was as follows:

USA - northern hemisphere
Puerto Rico -northern hemisphere
US Virgin Islands - northern hemisphere
British Virgin Islands - northern hemisphere
Dominica - northern hemisphere
Trinidad & Tobago - northern hemisphere
Venezuela - northern hemisphere
Colombia - northern hemisphere
Ecuador - half southern hemisphere, half northern
Peru - southern hemisphere
Chile- southern hemisphere
South Africa - southern hemisphere
Tanzania - southern hemisphere
Kenya - half northern hemisphere, half southern
India - northern hemisphere
Thailand - northern hemisphere
Cambodia - northern hemisphere
Vietnam - northern hemisphere

So, by my count we have 5 countries in the southern hemisphere and 11 countries in the northern hemisphere. Maybe ATWFF1 was more northern hemisphere than you remembered.

As our moderator emeritus, Puddin, used to say "Those &&^!*&^@ CBS web monkeys"  :knuckles:

Thanks RFWill for posting the video.  It was a very well produced tease to the upcoming season.

I do have to say though, I'm not too thrilled about the telemarketing job.  Even if Jeff gets half a buck if Mr. Lopez listens to the 30 second pitch

Last season, I had flashbacks to the Amazing Race whenever Alex visited a certain location like Cuzco.  It happened again when Jeff pointed out Buckingham Fountains (start of season 6)

Jeff seems like a good guy.  I only hope he doesn't end up like Wrongway Feldman.  :lol3:

Let us know if a transcript gets posted, I'd like to read it. (IT's far easier for me than trying for a replay.)

Cupcake,  A belated big time thanks.  I did attend based on your message.

I agree that it was a fun and enjoyable event.

Those questions were coming fast and furious.  Zsolt did a great job but I wish the questions were directed to a bin where Zsolt could more easily pick and choose the ones to answer.

In case there is ever another one, is there a way to go to full screen during the chat?  I wished that the video and question sections were larger for more easier viewing.

Thanks again.

P.S.  Zsolt answered a lot of questions from others that I had posted upthread.

Jeff Schroeder ('Around The World For Free')
Thursday, July 22 2010, 10:00am EDT
By Lara Martin, News Editor

With successful stints on Big Brother and Amazing Race already under his belt, reality favorite Jeff Schroeder is now embarking on his biggest challenge to date with Around The World For Free. The second season of the interactive CBS reality show will see Jeff leaving his friends and family - including girlfriend Jordan Lloyd - at home while he attempts to cross the world in 100 days with no money and only the help of his online audience. With the venture kicking off on the Early Show this Monday, we caught up with him - and editor/cameraman/producer and travel partner Zsolt Luka - to find out more...

How are you feeling ahead of the big sendoff?
"The best way I can describe it is like going away to college or camp where you're scared but you're excited about the anticipation. You know it will be a great summer or school year, you're nervous in the beginning but once you get into it you have the best time ever."

Jordan recently told us that she'll miss you - was it a hard decision to leave your friends and family for so long?
"It was an absolute yes when they were thinking about me. It's what I want to do, I want to see the world. To me, it's a no-brainer. Would you rather be stuck behind a desk or going out and seeing the world? I know I'll miss my family and obviously I'll miss Jordan, but we'll be in touch through phone and computer all the time. You don't get a chance like this too often so when opportunity knocks you have to open the door for something like this."

Would you say being on The Amazing Race was good preparation for this?
"I guess, somewhat! (laughs) Jordan won't be with me this time! We could have used Zsolt on The Amazing Race! It prepared me a little. It's definitely a totally different scenario we're getting into here but it was good preparation."

What will you be bringing with you besides your satellite phone and computer?
"I haven't picked out my wardrobe yet but you don't want to be carrying around a lot of stuff. I definitely learned that from The Amazing Race when I dumped half my pack. I think I'll pick out a couple of my favorite T-shirts, maybe two pairs of shorts, some underwear, a good pair of shoes, some flipflops and swim trunks and I'll be ready to hit the world!"

What sort of preparation can you do for this?
"I work out, I try to hit the gym three or four times a week so I'm working on my endurance. I think I need to work on my patience because there will be a lot of downtime, long bus trips, waiting on the side of the road, waiting for people to reply, so I think working on my patience is more important than the physical part."
Zsolt: "This is more of a mental thing. It isn't a race, we're not trying to outrun a clock. It's a human thing of how do you keep going for 100 days non-stop - often 16 or 20-hour days - away from your family and friends?"

Do you speak any languages?
"I do not, so this is a question for Zsolt!"
Zsolt: "I speak six but I would trade some of those for one Asian language. We're not taking the talking dictionaries along. I want to see Jeff mime his way through a situation with a smile! I don't want him to have these crutches to lean on, I'm not going to help him too much either. Of course, we're buds on the road and have each others' backs, but the interesting thing is how he will stumble through a Tokyo or Thailand or India if necessary."

Do you have any idea which countries you will be visiting yet?
"We have no idea and that's what is so great about the show. It's all up to the audience and it's all interactive - they get to journey with us. We're seeing it through the eyes of the locals and bringing the audience with us. They determine where we go."

You're starting in New York City. How will you decide on your first destination?"After we walk off the Early Show set on July 26, the show starts. I have no money, only my computer and satellite phone to stay in touch with the audience. I'll log on and see who has made a profile and can help me out and that will determine which direction I go. We want to stay away from the season one route, we don't want to repeat the same direction he (Alex Boylan) took through the Caribbean and South America. We want to make our own path and go with the flow, whatever the audience suggests."
Zsolt: "Sometimes many different suggestions might come in and Jeff and I will decide on the fly which one we like best. But sometimes we may be in an extremely remote location like the jungle in North Thailand and it's only a stranger on the road who can help us because no-one from the online audience is reaching out, at which point we have to hitch a ride and see what happens."

Did you ever imagine you'd be in this position a year ago when you entered the Big Brother house?"Never! Me and Jordan were just out to dinner yesterday and talking about that exact same thing. What a difference a year makes! To be on two reality shows and then doing my dream travel show, it's exactly that, a dream come true. I could never have imagined it, but if you stick hard to your dreams and know what you want in life it can happen, it's crazy."

Are you interested in pursuing a TV career now?"It would be something I want but who knows what will happen after the show. Right now my focus is 100% on doing the show and wherever the chips fall after the show, they will fall."

Jeff and Zsolt will begin their journey on the Early Show on July 26 on CBS and fans can follow their entire experience on the Around The World For Free website

Thanks so much for posting the video.  I couldn't find it at the CBS site.

Even though I'm retired from TAR detective work, I couldn't help but notice a couple of things:

Due to the magic of editing, Jeff's short phone call to Jordan was really 8 minutes long (6:51 to 6:59).

Jeff should have covered up his e-mail address better.  I think it would be easy to figure out.

I thought that AA had put Jeff in first class (3A).  But no they didn't.  Jeff flew on American Eagle to Charlotte.  Being an AA Advantage member, I know that 3A on an Eagle regional jet is an aisle seat on the one side.  I also looked at the AA schedule and realized Jeff probably flew from Raleigh to New York because that's the only non-stop in that area to N.Y.  If he had flown from Charlotte to New York, he would have had to fly back though Chicago.

Finally, that map that the CBS web site is pretty cool.  At the time of this message, Jeff is currently a few blocks south of the Early Show.

I wish Jeff the best and am looking forward to watching his trip.

Thanks Joey!!

Heee...I'd love a day like that too!

Joey just sent me a couple of more pics as well...

Please go check out  www.goodmorninggloucester.com  for loads more!

Joey brought him to the greasypole and gave him two options. One he could eat all the lobster he could eat or two he could set free the one in five million blue lobster they got last week but he had to walk the greasy pole.

Jeff is a lucky guy!

For those who may not follow TAR ( :o ) Joey brought us all the lovely pictures of the TAR 17 starting line. Thanks so much for these! :hrt:

captjoe6, It's kind of ironic that when I was over at the CBS site last night, it just happened to be right after Jeff asked everyone where he was going.  I correctly answered Gloucester.  Unfortunately, the CBS web monkeys don't allow a user to scroll through all of the responses.  It's as if I never replied.

Anyway, more importantly, I noticed that Jeff's flashing blue button was in "downtown" Gloucester for quite awhile last night.  Was that because he, you, and others were at The Crows Nest?

Also, didn't Jeff bring swim trunks with him on his trip?  I'm sure that the women will enjoy seeing him in his skivvies but for us guys?... :groan:

Now on the other hand if Jordan was near nekkid, then that's another story  :-[

Thanks again for the article, photos, and video.

Amazing Race's Jeff Schroeder Traveling The World Without Money

In the past year, Jeff Schroeder has seen it all. He not only survived an extended stay in the Big Brother house, but he came within sniffing distance of the final two and was ultimately voted “America’s Favorite Juror.” After a guest appearance on The Bold and The Beautiful, he tackled The Amazing Race with his girlfriend, BB winner Jordan Lloyd. Now, Jeff is setting off on his own as the host of Around the World for Free, a Web series for CBS.com that will take him across the globe for 100 days with no money and with viewers determining where he goes, how he gets there and where he stays. Schroeder talks with PEOPLE about what he’s packing, what he’s willing to eat, why this show is a dream come true and how he and Jordan make their long-distance relationship work. –Reagan Alexander

You have said that doing a travel show was your ultimate dream and now it’s been realized. How does it feel?
Not to be too philosophical, but I’ve learned that anything can happen if you really believe in it and want it enough. I’ve been saying it for a long time and I know that BB and The Amazing Race were springboards for me to get this show. But it’s an amazing feeling to realize a dream.

So many things can go wrong in 100 days. Are you nervous?
If you look for problems or if you go out looking for the bad, then you’re going to find it. I have to focus on the positive and keep telling myself that there are good people out there and that everything is going to be good. My attitude is that I know things are going to go well but I’m hopping things go even better!

You’re traveling with a single backpack and you have to travel around the world. What are you packing?
I have to pack light — some shorts, some shirts. I’ll just have to pick out a few of my favorites. I wore my Saint Anthony chain on BB and Amazing Race, but I think my parents are getting me a St. Christopher chain. He’s the patron Saint of travelers, so it’s just going to be, my backpack, my Saints and my camera guy.

Are you catching up on your world cultures or are you going into this fully blind?
Obviously I’m no world traveler but I kind of want to go in blind. I want to learn as the audience learns. I think I’m an average, everyday guy and I want everyone else to be on my page. I want to go into this with an open heart and open eyes.

You’ll be depending on strangers for food. Is there anything you won’t try?
I’m going to try everything at least once even if it’s disgusting. I can only imagine that it’s rude to throw up after a meal, but there may be a few instances where that happens. I have to be open to new cultures and new cuisines — it would be rude not to, so I’m just hoping that my stomach can handle it.

You’re going to be relying on others for shelter as well. What can you offer as a house guest?
I’m going to help out any way that I can. I really enjoy cooking, but I don’t really know the ins and outs of a kitchen. I can whip something together but more than anything, with the cameras there, we’ll be showing the way that they live and showing their culture as they see it, not just from an outsider’s point of view.

How are you and Jordan doing?
We’ve had our bumps but no break-ups and everything is going great. We only get to see each other every two weeks or so. We have to travel back and forth but we vacation together and do a lot of fun things together. Lately I’ve been busy with the show and she’s been busy with school, but having to work with a long-distance relationship really worked out for us because when we finally get a break from what we’re doing we’re so excited to see each other. So far, so good.

Thanks cptjoe6. After seeing your latest pics, Jeff's flashing blue dot must have been at Passports.

And after seeing the lastest CBS video, I wouldn't mind seeing Jordan's mom on the pole.  Yum!

And, finally, my detective skills are off.  Jeff did fly first class.  He must have flown on a new AA regional jet.  The ones I fly don't have first class.

One day in and it's already been great, love his stops in the US (as I did Alex's) but can't wait for him to leave the Country.  The new website is awesome.

Thanks CaptJoe06 for the pics/story, looking forward to your future posts, and can't wait to see Zsolt's finished product of Day 1.

And the Charlotte video, so sweet to see, anyone who ever thought they kept they're relationship going just for TAR can put that to rest.  They definitely have some very strong feelings for each other.

Thank you so much , captjoe06.   You are the MAN!!!!!!!

I thoroughly enjoy all your posts, photos, and video.  I agree that you have set the bar high.

Sometime when you have a chance, can you explain the process of how you got Jeff, Zsolt, and John to visit you?

One in 100 million
By Steven Fletcher
 Staff Writer

Captain Joe & Sons wholesale lobster dealership processes more pounds of the crustacean than co-owner Joey Ciaramitaro can remember.

But the lobster boats have now offered up something virtually unique: an albino lobster.

Local lobsterman Mike Tupper brought the white shellfish in on the Freemantle Doctor last Friday. The 21/2-pound lobster's carapace was colored a blue-tinted white — starkly contrasting with the rest of the ruddy brown catch.

Ciaramitaro, also well known as blogger extraordinaire with his GoodMorningGloucester, said Tuesday that this lobster stood as one of the only two albinos he has handled in his lifetime on the docks, beginning at the age of 9.

Bill Murphy, senior biologist at the New England Aquarium in Boston, said Tuesday that only one in every 100 million lobsters would carry the albino shell, claws and tail.

Lobsters — usually a reddish brown — can come in varied colors. Murphy said the shellfish can appear orange, yellow — and, in rare cases, blue and white. Lobsters, according to both Ciaramitaro and Murphy, even appear with two colors, split perfectly down the center.

However, every color but white will turn the traditional red when boiled, according to William Alder, executive director of the Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association.

The albino isn't the only "mutant lobster," as Ciaramitaro refers to them, landed at his business even this month.

Last week, he said, a lobster boat brought in a lobster with a triple pincer claw. That shellfish weighed in at nearly 3 pounds.

Over the years, Ciaramitaro said lobsters and crabs of all colors and numbers of claws have crossed onto his landing.

Ciaramitaro said he's even stopped calling aquariums about unusual shellfish after officials became unwilling to pick up the crustaceans for study. So, despite their unique looks, the "mutant lobsters" go out to vendors just like their run-of-the-mill cousins.

One exception, however, was the albino lobster landed last week.

The same week the Freemantle Doctor landed the shot-in-the-dark shellfish, Jeff Schroeder, who has been a contestant on both CBS's "Amazing Race" and "Big Brother," visited the Gloucester wharves and was hosted by Ciaramitaro family's for the show "Around the World For Free." This year's "Amazing Race" also reportedly kicked off in Gloucester last month.

On Monday, Ciaramitaro left the lobster's fate in Schroeder's hands.

He presented two envelopes, one that read "eat the lobster," the other "free the lobster."

One would have had the albino lobster cooked, providing Schroeder with all the lobster he could eat; the other required him to walk Gloucester's famed Greasy Pole off Pavilion Beach to, as Ciaramitaro put it, "earn the right to release the lobster."

Schroeder chose to walk the pole, and Mark Ring of the lobster boat The Stanley Thomas ferried Ciaramitaro, Schroeder, and the film crew to the pole.

Ciaramitaro confessed in an interview Tuesday that the "eat the lobster" envelope really said to release the lobster as well. And, in the end, he said the event turned out well for all, with both the lobstermen and Schroeder looking like heroes.

"It was good for CBS, Jeff Schroeder, the lobsterman," he said, "and it was good for the lobster."

Thanks captjoe06!

I can't believe all the publicity Gloucester is getting, what with TAR 17, ATWFF and movies being filmed there. I wonder if Jeff knew that TAR 17 started there?

Anyone want to wager how many times Gloucester gets mispronounced this September?

Great news for AWTFF & for Jeff's travel prospects.  The website got 29,000 unique hits on the first day, hopefully they can sustain and even grow the momentum.  From what I've seen so far, they are well on their way.

I am a bit confused by all the different places Jeff went to. Didn't ATWFF2 start in New York City, not Chicago? It appears to me that he must have gone to Gloucester and to Washington DC as part of the publicity campaign for AWTFF2. The trip to see  Jordan from Chicago (where he lives) to Charlotte and then out of Raleigh Durham to parts unidentified apparently was day 2-3 of ATWFF2. Is this correct?
Title: Re: "Around the World for Free!"
Post by: theschnauzers on July 28, 2010, 10:44:33 PM
ATWFF didn't start until Jeff left the set of The Early Show on air -- the exact same way Alex started the first season.

(Alex spent a week or so traveling from NYC down to Florida in season one before he got out of the U.S.; it looks like Jeff is taking the same amount of time before he heads outside the U.S.)

Chicago and Charlotte were pre departure, I think the videos are confusing.

He left from CBS Plaza on Monday July 26...first stop Gloucester Ma, and now DC...

Quote
Grodner I swear, I think we may get a Big Brother wedding out of this, not to mention that Jeff and Jordan are still together. Wouldn’t that be great? And Jeff will be back too. Jeff might be spending the night in the house in a couple of weeks so look out for that! I can’t say that Brendon and Rachel are the same as Jeff and Jordan;

I hope this doesn't mean that Jeff may stay in the U.S. for the next couple of weeks.  It'll give me flashbacks to Amazing Race Family Edition  :groan:  For those not that familiar with Amazing Race, the ratings for the series peaked after the finale of Amazing Race 7 with Boston Rob and Amber's exciting finish against Uchenna & Joyce.  What did CBS then do?  Some CBS genius thought that doing a Family Edition for season 8 with the teams mostly staying in the U.S. was the way to go.  It was a major momentum killer for the program.  I think season 8 would have been a success if they had allowed the teams to race around the world.

Oh, apskip and others, don't be that concerned about the days.  Zsolt mentioned in a chat that they weren't even that concerned about the 100 days.

Peach may not have spent as much time as I have in Boston (living there 6 years). I do not remember ever hearing about Boston peaches and I used to go weekly to the produce wholesale market on food buying expeditions.

there is a website called NickelodeonParentsConnect that follows local produce. Here is their applicable listing:

Peach, I agree.  I wonder if it's going to change once he leaves the country.  I wonder why he picked Austin.  San Antonio with the Alamo, River Walk, and Mexican culture is by far the number one destination in Texas.  Maybe CBS has a Musical Showcase down on 6th street for some of their up and coming groups.  Otherwise, we're just going to see the Congress Street Bridge bats, Jeff swim in Barton Springs, maybe eat at the Oasis, etc.

Thanks for the photos RFWill.  It appears that Jeff and the group had a more successfull time fishing from his hostess's post over at CBS http://www.cbsaroundtheworld.com/#/journey/in-the-bayou/tip/225

I will submit a hypothesis that Jeff has been given orders to do a circumnavigation east to west to be different than ATWFF1. This could be done from DFW, but would better be done from LAX or SFO. My prediction does not preclude ATWFF2 going to Central and/or South America, but the hop across the mighty Pacific Ocean would necessitate a return to Mexico City or LAX to do that. We should find out soon enough based on where Jeff goes from DFW.

To me, this is the first webisode of the series.  Jeff is finally out of the country and will be able to immerse himself in a foreign culture.  It was kind of cool that the Japanese dad did not know about the visit before Jeff's arrival.  Also, I hope the good folks at Jeff's fan club got a good deal on the airline ticket since Jeff did another AA promo on their dime.  Also, hope Jeff learns better about the time zones.  His flight landed just before 5 pm. in Tokyo which is 4 am in N.C.  It would have been entertaining if Jordan had chewed him out or just hung up on him.

In the first season, Alex spent nearly two weeks before he got out of the U.S. to head to the Caribbean. He spent time in South Carolina and Florida (visiting his TAR racing partner Chris) before he was able to arrange to be flown by private plane  out of the country.  So the cross-country trek will be a ATWFF tradition, and there are sound practical reasons for it.  It allows everything to be tested, equipment, web site, acclimation to how things are supposed to work, as unlike TAR this production team wiull change in some ways every season.

I hear you and what you say makes sense, but I still think they should have left immediately overseas.  I didn't follow the webisodes last time but did watch on WGN America.  The show didn't really pick up for me until Alex made it to the Caribbean.

Most of the things that Jeff did in the U.S. anyone living here could have done.  It's visiting foreign lands staying with home country families experiencing their way of life is what makes the show special.

As for getting the kinks out, that CBS web site still has problems and is certainly not the most user friendly.

about 3 hours ago via Seesmic for Android

Even though he doesn't know it, Jeff is now following the path of Amazing Race Asia 2.  IIRC, the Busan leg was a lame one because one of the detour tasks was picking up a coin in an octopus tank and the roadblock was an extremely watered down version of Amazing Race 6's pick a key and unlock a lock.  Also, it was the leg where one of faves (Japanese siblings) were eliminated.

Also, Pusan is now named Busan.  Busan is how far the U.S. Army was pushed back at the start of the Korean War.

What a great episode.  Jeff and the gang climbing Mt. Fuji.  He even got a phone call on the climb up.  I hope at the end of the trip, Jeff gets a series of national AT&T television commercials.  They could show him on his AT&T phone literally all over the world.

Jeff in Seoul.  He probably won't, but I wish Jeff would talk to some Koreans about the U.S. armed forces in their country.  U.S. taxpayers spend a lot of money helping protect South Korea from the North.  I wonder if the average Korean thinks that our presence is still needed.

Even though I've retired from TAR detective hood, I still can't help myself.  Jeff arrivied in Thailand on September 1.  As I write this, it's now September 13 in Thailand.  Well, what's the delay?  My understanding is that Jeff wants to go to India. As Alex and Zsolt found out in season 1, visitors must get a visa to visit India.  Well, getting a tourist visa shouldn't take long.  But Jeff, Zsolt, and Josh are more than visitors.  They are documenting Jeff's travels for cbs.com.  I don't know if they are considered journalists, but look at all the stuff that a video journalist must go through to visit and film in India.  http://www.indiacgny.org/php/showContent.php?linkid=217  (the link is from the Indian consulant in New York) It appears that the team just can't go to India and film as they please like they have in the other countries.  India appears to be one big bureaucratic place.  I hope the team gets on their way soon.  They've been in S.E. Asia and Thailand way too long.
Title: Re: "Around the World for Free!"
Post by: apskip on September 13, 2010, 12:34:01 AM
Pedaler, you may be right that the timing of going to India was the result of not having a visa for India. However, where visas are required for U.S. citizens the process of obtaining them can be time-consuming, so I bet that Zsolt and Jeff had all reasonable visas in advance when possible. I believe that what has kept them in Thailand is a vibrant culture plus the distance being Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

You may be right Skip, it's no big deal.  I guess I'm just losing my enthusiasm and was bored.  Anyway, Jeff tweeted that he's on his way to Bangalore, India tomorrow.  I can't complain about that since that's the place that I also recommended over at cbs.com.  It looks like a great mix of the old and the new.

Pedaler, thanks for the excellent video of  Erica Jones. We will soon know how she is supporting Jeff's trip. I have been all over India and through Bangalore in the middle of the night on a long-distance train, but did not stop there. Bangalore is the high tech capital of India and currently has an estimated population of 8 million, as big as New York City.

I enjoyed this behind the scenes planning episode but I still don't understand the lack of webisodes during their Bangkok/Siem Reap stay.  In almost two weeks, there was a trip to the Thailand BB house, a trip to the War Elephants, traveling to see the Monks in Siem Reap, and then this episode.  Most of Jeff's time was spent in Bangkok but there was no Bangkok episode.  Oh, well.

I wonder what has been going on??

There was a long stay in Bangkok with no updates. Jeff mentioned his stomach then, wonder if he was sick?

There was a stay in Bangalore that looked as though it would have promise...but nothing of substance was shown except the radio show and a meal.

And Jeff referred to his cameraguy "Josh" so where is Zsolt?? ???

Even (and maybe especially) obstacles can be really interesting, wish we would see more.

I don't like to say it...but this is starting to fizzle out a bit.

Peach, I don't know what is going on, but it sure has been a letdown since Mt. Fuji.  Jeff did many other things in Thailand, but for some reason they weren't shown.  He went to some tropical island, went zip lining in Siem Reap where one of the Amazing Race Asias went, ate smelly nasty durian in Bangkok, etc.  Here's a link to his twitter photos. http://plixi.com/6167284#/my_photos/home/6167284/page:1

As for Bangalore, here's a link to its wikipedia page.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangalore Just look at the architectural photos at the top.   Why didn't they go to some of those places?  Unfortunately we are only seeing the stereotypical stuff in India.

I don't know what Zsolt, the director, is thinking and doing.  He even has an additional camera guy this time to reduce the burden on him.

Normally I would just give up posting the videos but I'm stubborn and will continue to the end.

Having travelled extensively around the world alone, I know that there are some black days, when you just want a hug and a familiar face. But that is just when you reach out to someone, make a friend, have an adventure, and make a memory.

And Jeff isn't alone...he has Zsolt and Josh to commissurate with, so quit telling us it isn't what you are used to and go have some FUN!!

I agree GP, I would love to see more behind the scenes stuff and not just the message boards, but more of what Zsolt and Josh are doing.  What lengths they may have to go to, to get the shots, how they decided what to put into and leave out of the webisodes. It doesn't have to be a lot, just enough to give us a little more insight into the whole process.

I think the original order was for something like 50-55 webisodes.  We all know they have done a lot more than we have seen. Hopefully, CBS will pick it up like WGN did in Alex's season. As for the timing of when new webisodes are released, I think they have more hoops to jump through this season and are really at the mercy of CBS.

Jeff got a tour of Bran Castle (aka Vlad Tepes Castle aka Dracula's Castle) in Bran, Romania.

This is the same castle as was part of the Romania coffin/gypsy  DETOUR in episode 3  of AR14 which ended at Villa Panoramic 2km from Bran.

I was close to Bran Castle twice during a 2 week tour of Romania, but I did get to see the birthplace of Vlad Tepes in Sighisoara (recognized by a placque on the wall.

I second that. Who wouldn't want to try indoor skydiving? It is so much less risky than real skydiving, yet I understand the sensation is quite similar.

I was one of those few who sent him a message about the place.  The funny thing is that we, the few, all must have found the place independently.  I was the only one to place a tip on the ATWFF map over at cbs.com in addition to sending Jeff a message.

Zsolt must have learned some editing tricks somewhere.  The Cologne trip that we see here happened before the indoor skydiving (prior webisode) and the London sightseeing we see here happened after the England outdoor skydiving (future webisode).  Oh well, the trip is almost over and we have another lengthy video (6 1/2 minutes).

Here's a great promo for an award that ATWFF 2 is up for.

To me, a very interesting fact is the total number of viewings.  At the time of the promo, which was part of a award submittal package, there were 7.3 million viewings.  Source : http://www.dm2pro.com/articles/20101105_17/    By the time of the video (in Romania), they were about 3/4 of the way through.  By extrapolation, there could have been close to 10 million viewings by the end of the show (there still is one more webisode left).  I'm fairly positive that the results represent a great success for the series.

The Best of Around the World for Free 2

Title: Re: "Around the World for Free!"
Post by: apskip on November 08, 2010, 07:28:28 PM
I feel compelled to state the obvious: use of the title "Around the World for Free" is a blatant misrepresentation of what actually occurred. The concept of, as Jeff says, "interactive entertainment" is a valid and useful one. Having other people pay for all the airplane, train, bus, or other transportation fares is a really poor idea. That is because the fare for an Around-the-World airline ticket with many stopovers is less than one-third of what I estimate the individual flight fares to be. Both Jeff in ATWFF and Alex in ATWFF2 accepted huge amounts of money from strangers to get them where they needed to go. This was grossly inefficient. I feel that the show would have been just as interesting if the same major stops were made and the same sights visited. It is OK for people to pay for or provide food, lodging, area tours and admission fees, etc. in my opinion). This would have resulted in equally good television.

Post by: georgiapeach on November 08, 2010, 07:43:49 PM
I agree apskip. My one and only objection to this show is the times they rely so much on plane tickets being donated. It was lovely that the BB fan board was able to help Jeff so much....but how does that really support the concept of making your way around the world for free? It wasn't for free at all, just free for Jeff, and that mostly because of his BB involvement.

And I would love to see less flights and more other means of transport. I liked that he tried to catch a ride on a big rig instead of flying at the end, that would have been fun to see. Even more fun if he worked a day unloading or loading in order to "pay" his way.

I would love to see any future editions rely more on a bartering of sorts...the person could be asked to teach or lecture or cook or something... in exchange for their food and lodging and even transportation.. Alex did more of that than Jeff...

I agree with both of you, it would be far more interesting if Jeff had to earn his way around the world by using his considerable people talents. Maybe lose the laptop?

First, let me say that I'm assuming any future host of the program will come from a CBS reality show.   Of the three main CBS reality programs, I only watch The Amazing Race.  Can anyone speculate who could be the female hostess next summer?

Quote
"We feel very honored by our two DIVA awards for AROUND THE WORLD FOR FREE.  What made this Web series so significant is that it created a new style of programming in which the users created the story," said Joe Ferreira, Senior Vice President, Network Liaison & Original Content, CBS Interactive.  "The feedback has been so impressive that we are already in the planning stages for next season, which will air summer 2011 and feature a female host."

Total speculation, but during his chat with the Jeff/Jordan fansite, Zsolt did throw out Parvati's name as an example of the type of person they are looking for.  Burton Roberts (Pearl Islands) is one of the co-founders/owners of Around the World Productions, so there is a Survivor connection.

Is she the one that mugs for the camera all the time?  I'll have to do some research on her.

Anyway, whoever is chosen, I hope TPTB change the rules and gives the host free airline tickets anywhere in the world.  Between American Airlines and their travel partners, you should be able to travel almost anywhere in the world.  American would get plenty of product placement exposure and the show could focus on the people and places of the world.

I am still amazed that two different web sites and individuals from those sites paid for most of Jeff's flights around the world.  I don't know of any other CBS reality star, other than maybe his girlfriend Jordan, that could muster such support.

I saw on Twitter where Jeff's host from Bangkok, Supan, posted a YouTube about ATWFF on Thai television.  Well, I chopped down the video and uploaded only the Jeff part.  It was kind of interesting to see that Jeff expected to spend only five days in Thailand, when in fact, he spent around two weeks there.

For me, it's always kind of fun to find something out by accident when you're searching for something else.  The photo below shows Parvati and others with two of the executive producers of ATWFF, Alex and Burton.  But the fun thing for me was seeing Dennis and Erika (far left, first row) in the same photo.  For those who don't remember them, Dennis and Erika were the first team eliminated in Amazing Race 5.  IIRC Dennis was too nice at a taxi stand which greatly contributed to their demise.

It never surprises me that the reality TV world is a small one.

I am one of the Creators and Executive Producers for the show. Like I said above this show is my baby so I try to stay as hands on as possible with as many aspects of the show as possible. We are currently in pre-production for Season 3, which will launch late spring/early summer.

Here is the website on which you can follow Parvati: http://www.cbsaroundtheworld.com/

She started in Los Angeles July 7 and the way she went east to Phoenix and through Texas to Dallas and Austin. Then Parvati turned south to Haiti, Dominican Republic, Barbados, Guyana and seldom-visited South Guyana before getting to Rio Vista, Manaus and Fortaleza, Brazil.

Parvati has gone from Fortaleza to Rio and there to Iguaca Falls. She had trouble moving on from there, but finally got to Buenos Aires.
Title: Re: "Around the World for Free!"
Post by: apskip on September 21, 2011, 01:59:07 PM
Parvati has been a busy girl. She went from Buenos Aires to Cordoba, Argentina and then back. Next was crossing the pond from Buenos Aires to Johannesburg. She then had a trip locally to the Pilanesburg Nature Reserve. She must have flown from Johannesburg to Windhoek and then got someone to drive her the long distance in to the Etosha in northwest Namibia. After returning to Windhoek, she had some accident, injuring her right arm and having a protective cast put on. Then there was a really long trip on the Trans Kalahari Highway into Gaborone, the capital of Botswana. She then headed north to see the Manomi Game reserve and the Makadikgadi Pan (where the infamous race to the beds took place in Amazing Race 7 between Ray and Deana and Brian and Greg). she is now on her way to Livingstone, Zambia near Victoria Falls. Her plan is top next get to Kenya, which is a long distance.

Peach,
I can confirm that Parvati was in Nairobi Airport on Thursday and that she was flying back to the U.S. that day. That means that the "Around the World" concept has been abandoned because Parvati had either too good a time or unexpected travel delays in getting to East Africa, which is only 1/3 of the way around the world.

I think that seeing her on "the Talk" tomorrow is likely.
