The first team in front the wide counter in order to try few tickets to the air transport.
After a long air trip, I am now home again. The air trip did not become however entire ointressant. In Amsterdam so came it first forward a guy and girl and called out about it there some that wanted to transfer its tickets to them then they were with in a TV programme and needed come to Stockholm fastest possible. No bitten however, but they succeeded nevertheless to come with on their stand village tickets.
Apart from the team with the pair (that also are visible on the picture) had time to three other teams with product in photographer and sound guy with. A team asked me about I where from Stockholm, and when I said that I where it became I filmed when I portrayed the fastest road to take themselves from Arlanda to green grove. I might also type on a paper that I the my approved possible participation. I asked what the where pursues programmes, and I did not get the name on it, but they come in all cases from USA. Reminded little about Amazing race thought I. It was in all fall comfortabley with little performance after it 10-timmars the long first flight.

Terese @ sparkibaken.se kindly repiles (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,18840.msg438010.html#msg438010)
The teams I saw was the boy and the girl (that are in the first picture), a african american team with two guys with Harlem Globetrotter-jackets, a team with a guy with pink(?) hair and then the last team with two black haired guys (I think one or two of them had glasses). It was the last couple who asked me about the fastest way to GrŲna Lund and they wondered what was the highest point there.

For those unfamiliar with the reference Arlanda is the name of the Stockholm International Airport (hence airport code ARN) and Grona Land is an amusement park in Stockholm. Here is a description of a visit there, including a picture desribed by Richard Bannister:

  OK, I'm bored... places we know in Stockholm...so far...  :res:

...BTW airport is 20 miles from downtown, but park is less than 2 miles to the ferry terminal

A little insider info for all TAR fans: Season 15 will buy you a visit to everyone's favorite Stockholm! Detailed fixed GrŲna Lund. Saw it with my own eyes

It was very hush hush over the whole. The few people who were involved were forced to sign confidentiality papers (I am not one of those, however, so I can babble freely  ). ****ing fast to cover up the envelope box with black refuse sacks, they were also, as soon as the participants were not in the vicinity.

What I understood the whole situation as it was a "Detour" (only a few were run), the task was to go tilt. A strange detail is that there is still something on the roof at Jetline: an arrow in the TAR colors that point in the direction of the Jet Rock. What it used to, I know not ...

I heard from someone that was a witness @ Grona Lund .. she/he states the Globe Trotters were among the first to arrive and Brian & Ericka among the last. I know it doesn't help much though.

They took a boat from Stockholm sweden to Estonia.I live in Stockholm and spotted few of the teams few days ago it was exciting but won't tell about them else than that their next destination was Estonia.

Sweden it is. But it's one of the later legs. It's gonna be a good leg since i happen to know what they are doing there
There is this kind of park but didn't think this park was gonna be in the race but yah.

What could be the worst thing someone has ever done in their life? I'm feeling a hay bales vibe.

Exactly what I was thinking. And now, is it possible that the quote was recycled from the first time?

Maybe. And this airs here on my birthday. I better not get what I don't want to happen. :groan:

You have the same birthday as me!

But if this is the Switchback and it is the hay bales, I still don't think it's going to be a big unlucky incident for one team. More likely they will just do it and move on. Just throwing that out there.

And just so you know, I doubt that the quote comes from Season 6, if that's what you meant. In aired footage nobody ever said that exact quote, to the best of my remembrance.

There's also the possibility that BVM would pull out unaired TAR 6 footage to use for the black and white flashback and possibly that quote. If they're going to do this, they might as well ramp up the suspense and prolouge as much as possible.

I might have to pull out my copy of that episode and check during this coming week. (Not today, it's my little schnauzer's seventh birthday and I need to go do something with her; I keep getting a paw on my leg.)

That could be a possibility as well, since there was not much aired complaining from Lena & Kristy.

Or perhaps another team said that quote? ???

IIRC, there was something in the Tallinn sightings about Brian/Ericka being far behind. Maybe they get bad luck at the haybales and end up leaving last, a la Adam/Rebecca every leg?

CBS has just issued a press release bundle that includes a press release on the highlights of the November sweeps month (link)  (http://www.cbspressexpress.com/div.php/bundles)to the CBS Press Express website (click on press bundles link and look under October 27  to download the Word document.):

Quote from: from CBS

So we have confirmation of the Switchback task and an NEL for the leg in The Netherlands.

There's also this for the Estonia leg, which a mod can move when there's a thread for it:

The haybales is in my mind the perfect RB to revisit, difficult but doable. Can't wait to see it again, and oh please TPTB, bring back LENA as the greeter!! :jumpy:

Do we know for sure that Hollnd is a NEL? There's nothing in that quote that suggests it to me.

Unless its an actual speedbump in the road that Maria runs over going too fast and damages her vehicle... :neener:

I think that it's quite time for an NEL...

OK, since the Netherlands leg is a NEL but the problem is both Maria and Tiffany failed to attempt on both detour tasks, is there a time penalty for them after that?

Is this the same place it occured in season 6?? Or a new place??

Think they go somewhere get the gnome and do the RB..

I guess Explosive the Detour..

Maybe Airport -> Gnome ->Yield/Switchback->RB (Haypales)-> Detour-> Pitstop (Lena Greeter??)  :funny:

Just realise the explosives, they are holding the gnome.. Hmmm.. So Detour first or RB??

maybe each leg they go for a different race archetype, dubai 2 they were alpha male, netherlands they were the token gay team, and in sweden they'll be the psycho siblings

From the Screen Grabs you can tell Sam and Dan must make it to the Hay first.  As none are unrolled yet.

But when i see this picture of Meghan it looks like Sam is still in the back ground.

Anyway this leg has to be the NEL! WE have the final 5 racing thru Tallinn the next leg. And for some reason my witness, not sure what she witnessed .. she does not want to be spoiled  , thinks Brian and Ericka were last.

Well all but one TBC leg (Season 14's) featured long equalizer to attempt to put the teams on equal footing again.  So it is completely possible.

I remember someone (I think Luke) mentioning they had an HoO bunch at the Beihai Mall in Beijing 2.

Sam/Dan and FTBE are together at the explosives, while Gary/Matt and Brian/Ericka and together at the explosives. Meghan/Cheyne are...doing the other Detour choice I think, based on how they're clean compared to Gary.

Sam/Dan and Meghan/Chyene are together at the RB (at least; there are a lot of opened hay bales when they're searching).

That looks like Brian (minus yellow overshirt) to the left of Sam, no?

It's either him or a boom mic operator, and I don't think they would need to be crouching.

This brings back so much nostalgia? The very same post with the cluebox in front of it had the Yield attached! It is so weird to actually see the teams of this season in the exact place that Season 6 teams visited. Not much has changed, although it looks a little clearer on camera!

I hope it's the same ratio, 270 bales to 20 clues.

This preview also shows just how wimpy and whiny our teams are this season. All are complaining about how difficult the task is, whereas most of the Season 6 teams just came and killed it.

Even after Sam/Dan (I don't know one from the other) makes a reference to 'one racer (being) here for 8 hours' and they STILL complain.

I am really curious if Dan is telling Sam additional clue info, or if he just remembers the episode.  Because if its off memory good for Dan awesome for being a terrible brother.
maybe each leg they go for a different race archetype, dubai 2 they were alpha male, netherlands they were the token gay team, and in sweden they'll be the psycho siblings

I bet Maria's going to do the roadblock. Just like the female team before them, that will be their downfall.  :'(

The strategy of Tiffany doing all the tough ROADBLOCKs is about to have its ugly consequences exposed. The RB balance count is after episode 7 Tiffany 5 Maria 2. That means it is almost certain that Maria will be doing the next ROADBLOCK whatever it is.

Raymond, you are right on the money. Doubtless you have heard of the Nobel Prizes in selected fields. They are funded by a trust fund set up initially by Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, patented in 1867 and still a huge seller worldwide. Alfred Nobel was Swedish and his first factory was in Sweden. I have no doubt that the World Race Productions are honoring him with a general task or DETOUR involving dynamite. Actually, I think that will make a poor task because there is lengthy safety instructions needed, there will be to no opportunity for little place changes among the teams. So what if there is a big bang that is visually appealing.

I beleive that all teams except Maria/Tiffany had completed their tasks. remember that they would have arrived in the Groningen area by about 9am. The obvious flight choice from Amsterdam to Stocklholm is nonstop flight:

KL8223 AMS ARN 0715 0915

Should there not be room on that for all 5 or 6 teams on Sunday morning August 2, here are some additional connecting flights to leave at essentially the same time and get there later:

AF8223 AMS CDG 0715 0840 connecting in Paris to CDG ARN KL2062 0940 1210

LH2689 AMS MUC 0715 0825 connecting in Munich to MUC ARN LH3002 1010 1215

KL1141 AMS OSL 0705 0900 connecting in Oslo to OSL ARN SK490 1200 1300

For those of you who join Peach and I as fans of the Bremen route, unfortunately we are out of luck on the flights to Stockholm. There is are no flight combinations out of Bremen to there that make any sense.

Coutzy and Snooky,

You have to ask yourself why would the ending of episode 7 not be revealed. Would there be any drama if a team were doing poorly but eliminated at the beginning of telecast #8 (I feel only the part after the REVEAL can be considered episode 8)? No, there wouldn't. There has been ample evidence that episode 7 was a NEL. Would Phil have allowed a team to quit if by taking a DETOUR penalty (usually 24 hours) they will still be in it. That puts them a day behind the other teams, but it is conceivable although unlikely that bunching could get them back in it.

I don't think Phil eliminates them because if he were going to we would have seen that as the end of episode 7. I don't know how he gets them out of this mess, but I predict that WRP/Phil find a way. They can be very inventive.

As per Tiffany Michelle's Blog:

Quote
1.THE QUITTING THING: Technically we didnít ďquitĒ, we took a penalty for not completing the Detour which happens to be a 24hr penalty (for an unfinished Detour)... mind you, that was AFTER over THREE HOURS of attempting both challenges. Obviously we knew that by giving up on the Detour and asking for the penalty we could VERY likely be eliminated, it was unlikely that we could withstand a 24hr penalty unless it was a non-elimination leg but ďquitting the RaceĒ was not what we did, technically we took the penalty (although they worded it differently when Phil came out to the field) and at the point that Brian & Ericka checked in we were then eliminated.

Also, wikipedia has them listed as eliminated (as much as we can trust that), and also has them down for calling the Elimination Station and informing teams of their elimination. (I can't verify this as ES is not available in Australia)

Interesting information, Coutzy. There is two ways to read it:

1. When Brian and Ericka checked in for the pit stop in Vierhuizen Maria and Tiffany were eliminated, which does not seem possible since that had not stated a desire to take thet 24 hour penalty.

2. When Brian and ericka checked in for the pit stop at the end of episode 8 in Sweden Maria and Tiffany were eliminated. This is what I think happened. How can you have  SpeedBump in Sweden if there is no teams that earned it?

We will see at the beginning of telecast 8.

I suspect that TPTB planned for it to be an NEL, but that with the super penalty, figured that the other teams would be able to finish the leg in Stockholm before M/T departed from Groningen and so decided to eliminate them outright (much like U/J in All-Stars).

Yup. Just watched ES and they phoned in. But like what zackattack said, probably this was an NEL before and then they had to shift the NEL to this leg.

I think Netherlands was supposed to be an NEL, but since the poker girls quiet, Stockholm will be the NEL. I wonder what's going to happen to the speedbump in Sweden, and if there's a speedbump in Tallinn.

This is probably obvious, but I'm going to say we see teams taking a train from Groningen Central to Schipol Station.

Is the roadblock at the same place as last time? This is going to be entertaining if there are still 20 clues in 270 bales, considering there were about 9 teams last time doing the task.  :jam:

I realize the haybale task is the Switchback, however what I'm wondering is if the Switchback just the fact that they are going back to the TAR6 task or is it that after the haybale task, teams encounter the Switchback, where one team is sent back to the haybales.

From what Bertram said before this season began to air, the Switchback is a repeat of the original roadblock at the original location.

Which is exactly what the promo and press releases have described. There has been nothing to suggest that there is any differences from the original haybale roadblock task in TAR 6. I would think that those teams that were familiar with TAR 6 are going to be freaked out enough just knowing this will be the exact same task, and TPTB won't need to amplify it in any form.

Hmm...maybe "Switchback" will just be a tag for route markers consisting of a past task revisited. Maybe this time is a Roadblock-Switchback and probably, next season there will be one Detour-Switchback or the likes...

Just about every Roadblock was introduced that way in Season 6. But I agree, the music back then was WAAAY better than it is now. Since season 13, the music they play at the Finish Line when the winning team is told by Phil that they've won has just been the same music as when a team wins a leg. Not monumental like the music played when BJ & Tyler or Uchenna & Joyce won. Bring back that score please!

I doubt there will be a Yield, but there could always be a U-turn. But wouldn't it be on the same signpost as the Yield in Season 6? Yet in the preview I didn't see a Yield or a U-turn on that signpost.

I think there may be a U-turn this leg, but it may not be there. Also, I think the only point of this switchback is because the TAR crew is getting lazier...and they don't want to do any more searching for new tasks.

Well I was just referring to that specific location, but yes, of course there could always be a U-turn somewhere else on this leg, but if there were to be a Yield (I don't believe there will be), it would be at the Switchback as part of the nostalgic aspect. But that Yield was unused, so it probably doesn't count as a nostalgic feature of the task.

I would guess the explosives task has to do with Alfred Nobel, inventor of TNT.

Well, I think a Yield and a NEL are pointless, burt we have seen that before...so?

:duno: It just made me think when I saw the video again.

Wasn't Lena awesome? That still stands as a classic moment of bringing out the best in ordinary people...what makes TAR magical to me.

I had trouble with getting through that leg because I knew that one of Lena/Kristy, Don/MJ & Lori/Bolo were eliminated by the end of it, and I loved all 3. :funny:

In relation to what I quipped and apskip & graytex said, maybe the explosives are part of a War/Peace Detour honoring Alfred Nobel? (dynamite task/Nobel Peace prize task) Just a thought.

I agree with this being related to Alfred Nobel. Despite inventing TNT he was very concerned with the implications of his invention - hence the Nobel Peace endowment.
The Swedish army is well know for its peacekeeping abilities - and one of the things they excel at is the removal of land mines - usually by blowing them up. They have a training  facility in Eksjö "Swedish EOD and Demining Centre - (SWEDEC)" - which may be too far away - 4 hrs from Stockholm. see map.

added - nvm about Eksjö - GE took me to the wrong place - the real Eksjö is 15 hours away...

Ongoing: Mine Detection using radar.
A hand-held mine detection device, Humus, is developed based on radar technique. As opposed to metal detectors, radar equipment can find mines with very little or no metallic content. Choosing the bandwidth of the radar correctly, the risk of metal scrap and fragments causing false alarms can be reduced. In addition to developing detection algorithms, much effort is put into classification of different mines and other objects such as stones, metal fragments etc. using advanced signal processing. This reduces the false alarm rate even further and the information of mine type can be useful when neutralizing it.

Completed: Evaluation of ten handhold metal detectors, commissioned by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.

I would like to point out:
1.During the dynamite task I realized behind racers, there's people(probaly racers?)filling up bags with gunpowder(?), maybe the task is: Fill (number) of bags of gunpowder, and bury it, then let's it explode, once it (reaches a certain level) you will receive your net clue.

2.Where's our TAR stalker? The guy we spotted in Cambodia and Tokyo? LOL  jk

Don't know if anyones mentioned it, just stating the obvious that the Gnomes are most likely what the teams have to spot from the Tilt @ the Jet at Grona Land (http://www.gronalund.com/en/attractions/rock-jet/).

Quote
We were there celebrating my son's birthday and we noticed people running around with big back packs on their backs and I jokingly said, gosh you'd think it was the amazing race... AND LOW AND BEHOLD... out comes the clue box, a person jumps on Tilt, comes down and screams it is at the rocket jet or whatever it was called and off they go running for the next clue!

Phil: Sweden is a land of gnomes. Using a binoculars, teams will have to spot a gnome, and have keen eyes to find the Travelocity roaming gnome, among his Swede cousins. The first to help bring the gnome home (by bringing it to the pit stop) will win a prize.

I still suspect we may hear some sort of explanation from Phil -- perhaps when the last of the five teams reach the pit stop -- that let's the fifth team know they're not eliminated because the Maria/Tiffany 24 hour penalty put them so far behind they are eliminated before they could have started this leg.

So from the photos we can see the Trotters behind the Brothers at the detour.

So they are together

And Team Zebra and the Farmers are together.

I know this is all speculation but it seems like The brothers are first at the Roadblock and that the Trotters and Meghan Follow behind.

So Zebra and the Farmers are bring up the rear.  :girly

Look at the video, theres a big Red X on the Bottom of the Base of the Gnome....Maybe a twist in the race like in Season 7? :duno:

Yeah, probably like season 7, the gnome with a special marking at the bottom wins that team a trip. I can't recall if the red x is there to cover the marking? Phil removes the tape to reveal the trip or not? Maybe someone with a better memory can recall.

Looks like the brothers and Meg/Cheyne arrive at the Grona Land together. So thanks to the bloggers we know that The Globetrotters arrive first and Brian and Ericka arrive last, fwiw

Curious how they get to the hay bales task. Don't see any cars or bicycles in the previews.
In season 6 they took the metro to Haggvik station and rode bicycles from there.

Well, notice the bottom of the Trotters' gnome compared to Dan and Sam's.

I have a feeling that red "X" will work in Sam/Dan's favor when they get to the pit stop.

Im gonna throw my 2 cent in that the reason Sam and Dan's gnome got red X is that the gnome may be the replacement? My team's gnome got broken into several pieces during China leg. We got the replacement at the Opera house and it doesn't have the clue on it. I don't think the red X means anything tho. I may be wrong!

So, from what I see:

Gnome task

Detour (TNT/?)

Switchback

Pitstop

Phil: Sweden is a land of gnomes. Using a binoculars, teams will have to spot a gnome, and have keen eyes to find the Travelocity roaming gnome, among his Swede cousins. The first to help bring the gnome home (by bringing it to the pit stop) will win a prize.

How about Karlaplan ...

There's a roundabout with a fountain in the middle called Karlaplan (http://www.hitta.se/gatubild/?gvX=6581833&gvY=1629980&gvH=51) (which a team might hit traveling south from the airport to Grona Lunds), but I can't quite match the building with the Dutch gables.

I wouldn't spend extra time on it. I can definitely place them at Karlaplan (compare the windows and flagpole), probably heading south to Grona Lunds (from where the cap was taken (http://www.hitta.se/gatubild/?gvX=6581842&gvY=1629971&gvH=336), all they had to do is take the next right and go south on the alameda). The other buildings and streets were probably just stuff they passed by while lost.

In Season 7 Leg 9, teams had to bring their gnome to the Pit Stop. All 4 gnomes had a different form of transportation on them, and the team with the plane on the bottom of their gnome won the prize for that leg (which, ironically, was last place Ron & Kelly).

Just throwing that out for clarification.

Here are my little mysteries for this leg:

** What sort of explanation re Maria/Tiffany's  lack of an official elim will we see?

**Why does a spoiler source, who is on site, call the Grona Land clue a Detour? Sounds like something he would have had to have overheard. (Note that I am not suggesting it is a Detour, just an oddity>)

Quote
It was very hush hush over the whole. The few people who were involved were forced to sign confidentiality papers (I am not one of those, however, so I can babble freely  ). ****ing fast to cover up the envelope box with black refuse sacks, they were also, as soon as the participants were not in the vicinity.

What I understood the whole situation as it was a "Detour" (only a few were run), the task was to go tilt. A strange detail is that there is still something on the roof at Jetline: an arrow in the TAR colors that point in the direction of the Jet Rock. What it used to, I know not ...

** Where/What is the other Detour? They need to be not outrageously far away from each other. Are we totally not seeing any of Stockholm this time??

** How do team GET to the RB? Train and bicycles again? Just train? Or a continuation of the self drive??

**Will Lena and Kristy appear as greeters? >> I will never forgive CBS for missing an opportunity if they don't, esp after all the hype.

And hmmm...WHERE is the PITSTOP anyway??

In season 6 it was at Af Chapman. The intriguing thing here is that it is a YOUTH HOSTEL. and I am still looking for the youth hostel Phil told us they stayed in along the way.

(http://i35.[banned image hosting site].com/24o1rf4.jpg)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Af_Chapman

Note that I am also not suggesting it is, just wondering.

** And my biggest question! Why does Meghan do the RB?? She and Cheyne are even at 3 each and they have a "spare" since they did the FF> I smell the hand of Bertram in this, I am sure he wanted to see at least ONE female unrolling the bales, since Tiffany and Maria are not here now to struggle at this one.  I'll bet TPTB were VERY disappointed to not have a F/F team to do this RB.

Exactly. Are they the victims of the SwitchBack, which is actually a twist which forces the other team member to complete the Roadblock after the first team member has done it? I can totally see one of those all-male teams using it on Meghan and Cheyne to slow them down to kill them out of the race.... because they're simply doing so well and racing so fast.

I think the Switchback is just another way of saying Roadblock. Meghan's not the only one to become all pissed off while she's working on it. Other RB racers are having trouble.

Maybe it's the way the task is set up. When they first did this, it was 20 clues in the haybales. Maybe there's fewer clues?

Because there are fewer teams this time, I think it's only far, if they either reduce the number of haybales, or increase the number of clues. Of course, the Amazing race is never about being fair.

If Cheyne does the hay bales the first time and then Meghan, it means a team is ahead of C&M to switch them back.

Maybe the bottom of the gnome holds the "info" for the SwitchBack.  Sam & Dan have the X and do not have to SwitchBack.  Cheyne & Meghan have no X on their gnome and must do the round bales again.  Pure speculation on my part!

If Cheyne does the hay bales the first time and then Meghan, it means a team is ahead of C&M to switch them back.

Maybe the bottom of the gnome holds the "info" for the SwitchBack.

But the gnome is an inshow promotion from Travelocity, that's why they are there. I don't expect the gnome to be anything other than a "who gets a trip" prize.

BUT I am still VERY puzzled by why Meghan is choosing this RB to do. As fans of the show, I would expect all of the teams knew exactly what they were getting into when they saw the haybales.

So a new game twist as Joab and gator suggest could be VERY interesting and might explain Meghan's choice (LACK of choice??) in doing this RB. It also gives the TPTB one more shot at having a woman doing this task again, which I am sure they were desperately hoping for.

Viewers have been proposing a new RB twist for sometime, there are whole threads about it across the boards. Maybe TBTB that be finally paid attention??

We do need to remember that at this point that we have NO EVIDENCE that the switchback is anything other than a revisit to an old RB site. But giving that revisit a name {{Switchback}}} that could fit with Detour/Roadblock/U-turn, combined with the very puzzling (to me) fact of Meghan choosing this RB to do when she clearly doesn't need to, is making me think that a NEW RB twist could actually be possible after all.

It will be fun to see how TPTB handle all this!!

And yes, pure speculation, but in the realm of possibility:

IF this is a new game twist.... WHO would be inclined to "Switchback" Meghan and Cheyne??

A panicked Brian/Ericka who are desperately trying to escape last place? the Trotters, who were foreshadowed in Dubai saying we will do ANYTHING it takes to stay in the game?? Dan and Sam getting competitve??

Okay, I am convinced! :funny: I've gone to the dark side! Now I'll be disappointed if it isn't anything but a RB revisit.

But not as disappointed as I will be if there is no Lena.

edited to add:

Okay, still thinking this through here.

Would be really have a new RB twist  AND a NEL?? Even if the NEL may not have originally been meant for this leg??

More mystery!!

I'm pretty much convinced that Meghan is doing this because she wanted to, rather than she was forced to do this, which leads to poor decision making on their part.

Aww Well, maybe Cheyne did it the first time and found the rotten clue that now, Meghan had to do it too?  But Cheyne looked so pretty at the roadblock watching Meghan. Looked like he hadn't done a 'blasted' thing!  Which brings me to... I wonder if they did the Explosive Detour? They were the only team NOT shown in the promo's and commercials.  So, either they did something else, or they got there before anyone else and were gone before anyone else or they suffered a terrible fate, yield? OR they were the very last to arrive...

However, the way the teams have talked recently, I think they would all like to see the Trotters gone and if they had a chance to use a yield, it would be on them?  JMO

I'm still hoping for a Roadblock twist because if we have a U-TURN which sends a team back to do a U-TURN, then a Switchback which forces the other team member to complete the task would be a great idea. But i think i'm probably looking into too much, because they will probably tell and explain to the viewers about the new twist like when the U-TURN was first introduced. Maybe some of the producers read our comments posted and will incorporate our ideas into the race next season... :funny:

I will offer my hypothesis on why Meghan is doing a known potentially difficult ROADBLOCK. The answer is the ROADBLACK BALANCE RULE, which says that there is a maximum in ROADBLOCKS that Cheyne can do. I have never found out what the magic formula is, but I believe that it will result in maybe 7 Cheyne to 4 for Meghan (they have one less in total than other teams due to the FAST FORWARD). With the uncertainties of the last 4 legs ahead, they could be setting their team up to have Cheyne do all the remaining 4 Roadblocks. Or Meghan could do all but one of them. That kind of flexibility is invaluable in the upcoming most competitive legs of AR15. They will be thinking that they will need it to compete against the Globetrotters or Sam/Dan.

Let me move on to the related subject of the number of bales to expect. I think that the relative proportions of clues in the bales to remaining racers will be maintained. There were 270 bales in AR6, ep.3, 20 clues, and 9 racers competing. This time there are 5 racers competing, which scales down to 150 bales and 11 clues if they want the relative conditions to be the same. Remember that all teams except Lena and Kristy had little trouble with this ROADBLOCK. It became epic only because Lena apparently missed a number of clues in her bales (which could happen again). I think Cheyne and Meghan are gambling that Meghan, who appears to be a fairly strong and athletic type, will be able to handle it.
Title: Re: TAR15 EP8: "This is the Worst Thing Iíve Ever Done in My Life"
Post by: littlewop on November 07, 2009, 03:48:13 PM
I agree with apskip.  I think Meghan does the roadblock because 1) she thinks she can handle it no problem, and 2) you never know what the RB's will be down the road, so pick 1 now that she feels confident in and have the freedom for her to be able to skip any future ones that may be even worse.

Peach also said that the eye witnessed thought that the amusement park was the detour.  He/she may have been confused by hearing the teams mention Detour when reading the next clue.  Wouldn't they get the clue after the gnome, stating DETOUR...go to point A for this task  OR go to point B for that task?  And the fact that they said that there very few detours, there is usually one each leg of the race, so maybe another indication of some confusion on the witnesses part.

And regarding the speedbump this week....Just Kiddin' Puddin'!!    :funny:

I think people are over thinking on this.

Some racers just switch one racer to the next, regardless of asks, and some just make decisions based on the clue without thinking about what the task might be.

I think to look for something beyond that when we have no evidence of it being anything besides the two examples above it really reaching.

I think "switchback" will ultimately mean throwback like when NFL teams where the old time uniforms.

Agreed. The Switchback is not an official "new" type of clue; it just refers to the revisiting of a task from a previous season. It's kind of like an official nickname.

About the only mystery in my mind is what the X on the bottom of Sam & Dan's gnome is for, when clearly Herbert & Nathaniels' gnome doesn't have one.

Why doesn't someone go find season 7, EP9 and see exactly how Phil reveals to Ron and Kelly that they won the trip, he reveals a plane on the bottom of the gnome but I can't recall exactly how it was revealed.

He turned over everyone's gnomes. On Uchenna/Joyce, Meredith/Gretchen, and Romber's gnomes, there was a blank picture of a sky, while Ron/Kelly's had an airplane in it. (incidentally, the airplane was visible as R/K were heading up to the pit stop; I don't know why they were so surprised when they could've easily looked down)

I think there were four different modes of transport on the gnomes. The plane was the winner, and I think there was a boat and a car or something.

Yup. I think on the race, they just want to find a gnome and go and really didn't overthink and try to find one with a plane below it...

There are 12 legs and I assume 12 roadblocks, and the roadblock limit is six... M/C -1 and one person can do the most six... if I was them, i'll try to make it 5-5 going into the final leg, so that either of them could do the final roadblock, like what Jamie and Cara did.

Continuing to over think the SwitchBack  B:)

Racers decide who is going to do a Roadblock before opening the clue.  What if once they open the clue it says that the other teammate must do the Roadblock.

 Like it!

To support the hypothesis:

If you are a racer, and obviously you see haybales around you, you will think its time to do the RB in Season 6. And of course, a racer who is afraid to do it that they may screw the team, will have to force his/her teammate to do it. Its the "Switch" part in the "Switchback". The "back" means to do repeat the challenge again.

Okay I am lost at the Switchback thing so what's the list of possibilities? I will be so mad if it's just a term for the task though.  (:;)

Extracted from Wikipedia:
A hairpin turn (also hairpin bend, hairpin corner, etc.), named for its resemblance to a hairpin/bobby pin, is a bend in a road with a very acute inner angle, making it necessary for an oncoming vehicle to turn almost 180į to continue on the road. Such turns in ramps and trails may be called switchbacks in American English, by analogy with switchback railways. In British English 'switchback' is more likely to refer to a heavily undulating roadóa use extended from the rollercoaster and the other type of switchback railway.

So in simple words: A switchback is a very acute turn in trails/ramps in America. A switchback is a roller-coaster shaped road in Britain. But since it's America, we're going with the hairpin, whose angle is so small the turning for vehicles is large. Now we just need to intepret it to make it The Amazing Race-ish.

The only problem is that racers get the short version of the clue before, not after,  they decide. This time, thanls to the preview, we know that the racers know it has somwthing to do with Hay! My guess is that they all suspected the task would be the haybales...

Because that would mean they are open 23 hours a day. LOL   Seems kinda weird, if they are going to be open 23 hours, why not 24? Do they need to give their rides a lunch break? :funny:

The only strategies I can think of for this task are:   (and we've had 5 years to think about it  :groan:)

1)  While unrolling watch both the revealed part that you are walking on and the rising part that you are rolling in case the clue sticks there.

2)  Unroll the haybales towards the road. The advantage is to have the sun light shining on your back so the revealed clue will catch more light and be more likely to be spotted.  It looks overcast in the promos but the brightest light still comes from the direction from where the sun is.  From the promos, it looks like the sun is in the southwest shining perpendicular to the road (3pm ish).

Good luck

In rewatching the TAR 6 footage, it seemed to me that the clue packets are not buried in the layers of the straw as a bale is unrolled, but is on the surface of a layer as it is exposed.

That could just be editing, but that seemed to be the only constant I saw from the footage.

The unrolling towards the road sounds good if you choose bales that are already pointed that direction.  Turning/spinning one of the very heavy round bales will not be possible.

The actual flight information would be unknown for arrival of KL1107 in Stockholm. Departure was 17 minutes late but it could ahve made up time. I would guesstimate arrival around 0900 for the first 3 teams. KL1109 departed a littlelate but arrived 4 minutes early at 1121am. The Saturday/Sunday schedule for the Arlanda Express train to downtown Stockholm's 20 minute ride is 5, 20, 35 and 50 after every hour, which confirms Gary's Statement that it is every 15 minutes.

Sicne the camera/sound crew has to get their equipment before teams can leave the airport, I believe the train that Sam/Dan got was 935am and the one Herb/Nate got was 950am and the one Brian/Ericka got was 1150am and the one Gary/Matt got was 1205pm.

The ferry to Grona Lund goes takes only 5 minutes from Gamla Stand to Djurgarden Island. You can also get there from Slusseen Island in 8 minutes. Which one was correct for teams to get to Grona Lund? I don't know and may not be able to get appropraite information on this.

I have a map of Djurgarden with Tivoli Grona Lund in the loswer left side of the island. The ferry route from Gamla Stan on the left side is obvious but the one form Slussen is not:

Here is a statement about the bus routes to the Silja ferry to Tallinn:
The Tallink-Silja ferries arrive at Frihamnen close to central Stockholm every day from Helsinki, Turku, Tallinn and Riga. From Frihamnen you can get to the Gšrdet subway station or take busses number 1, 72 or 76 to central Stockholm. More information about stops and timetables can be found on SLís website www.sl.se.

Jf anything, the haybale roadblock this time was even more difficult, if for no other reason than they had to find TAR flags, and not clue envelopes in plastic sheaths. Those were bigger, flatter, and easier to see/feel than the flags.

What was the purpose for winning the gnomes this time? They all got to the Amazing Mat, but no explanation. And no explanation why Sam/Dan's gnome had a big red "X" on the bottom, and not the others, once the detour clue was removed.

It's time for some statistics. The average probability of a hit with 7 flags and 186 bales is 3.76% per attempt assuming that all teams left no clues in their bales. That means that it would take an average of 26.6 tries  before a team found one flag. Although it could vary as flags are actually found, on average it would still stay roughly the same unless there was a "run on the bank". Sam with over 100 tries would have taken 4 times the average. Somebody has to be above average and others below average because that the way a random task works. It is hard to say how long it took to unroll each bale and get to the next one. My guess is that it was about 2 minutes per try. That means that the average time to complete would be about 53 minutes. Meghan reported 2 hours plus. Gary had 2 hours 45 minutes for his. Sam took longer than Meghan and probably longer than Matt. Maybe 3 hours? Big Easy took a short time and so did Brian.

In comparison to the AR6 Ep. 3 Lena effort, the original specs were for 20 clues in 270 bales with 9 teams. This time there were more bales and fewer clues when the number of teams were equalized. The statistics for the original ROADBLOCK were 7.4% hit rate, almost exactly twice the percentage for AR15 ep. 8. The number of bales were 30 per team originally and 37.2 for AR15. On any measure, AR15 Ep.8 was consdeirably tougher than the original.

Maybe the Big RED X was no more than double sided tape holding the clue in place?

This week was no exception, so I guess this blog (http://www.theaccordiondiaries.com/2009/11/folk-dance-of-doom.html) has it right: the producers really like the accordion.

Actually, just multiplying 7/186 to get your odds of success only works for a very small number of trials (like one trial #1 to be exact).  The more accurate determination of the odds of finding a hay bale with a flag comes from consideration that the number of remaining hay bales is getting smaller with each successive trial.

Consider the probability of not getting a flag in the 1st hay bale:  1 - 7/186 = 0.9624
Then the probability of not getting a flag in the second hay bale is:  1 - 7/185 = 0.9622

But to get to that point we have to multiply the two probabilities.  So the probability that no flag will be found after two tries is:  (1 - 7/186)*(1 - 7/185) = 0.9260

Then the probability of not getting a flag in the third hay bale is: 1 - 7/184 = 0.9620

But to get to that point we have to multiply the three probabilities.  So the probability that no flag will be found after three tries is:  (1 - 7/186)*(1 - 7/185)*(1 - 7/184) = 0.8908

And so on  and so on.   The probabilities of not getting a flag after the first 100  tries is:

What a haybale of an episode!

Flight Time and Big Easy - Nice work there for the Globetrotters! I had a feeling they'd come in first when at the start of the leg, they mentioned that it was Flight Time's birthday and they'd really love to come in first. And they did! Big Easy made such quick time of the haybales, there really must be some birthday luck there, lol.

Meghan and Cheyne - I wouldn't have expected such a strong finish from them especially when they weren't working too well this leg, coupled with Meghan's struggle at the Roadblock. But wow, wow, wow! They still did so well, it's incredible. Loved the part when Meghan pretended that she was giving up, then showed Cheyne the flag. He was still in a blur state of mind! That was cute. It must have been the first time we've seen Meghan really annoyed with Cheyne, but I love it that Cheyne took it so patiently. This couple will go far, in the race and in life!

Brian and Ericka - I give Ericka some credit for going on that amusement park ride bravely. They worked really well this leg, and can I say that they're one of the luckiest teams I've ever seen? They always seem to surge ahead in these needle-in-a-haystack tasks, all the time! It was another unexpected strong finish this leg.

Sam and Dan - I was so annoyed when Dan wouldn't stop yelling at Sam while the latter was doing the Roadblock. Come on, did he think it was that easy to do it? And then there was a three hundred and sixty degree turn, and Dan all of a sudden became so encouraging. I admit that the pit-stop scene was endearing though, Dan feeling all remorseful and breaking down in tears. That was so awww. I hope that they'll be more loving and understanding towards each other in the subsequent legs!

Gary and Matt - I salute Gary and his perseverance! I mean, I didn't feel as hurt as I did seeing him struggle out there as compared to when Lena struggled out there, I just feel more strongly for girls. But he gets the credit for never giving up! And they were much luckier than Lena and Kristy, they did find the flag eventually! Gosh, I'm really starting to love this father and son team now, their relationship's just getting stronger and stronger each leg. :)

Brian and Ericka to win a leg, they're the only team left who hasn't done so. Go Brian and Ericka! :D

Chateau, I think your approach is wrong. You cannot assume that there will be no hits at any point in the process. The real probability does vary a small amount ( as you have proved convincingly) when there is no hit and also when there is a hit, but on average it remains at 3.76% as long as the 5th cumulative hit is around cumulative try #133 (186 - 26.6 x 2). You can run a million accurate probability cases that prove nothing, but this information can be synthesized into something that makes sense and an approximation approach is the right way to go. The AVERAGE number of tries is still 26.6. Your 18 tries to have a higher than 50% probability is true, but so what? That does not mean that the average team will be done after 18 tries beacuse that is not so.

I obviously do agree with you that Lena had it easier than Gary.

Skokloster Castle is located on Lake Mšlaren between Stockholm and Uppsala. This is one of the Grand Baroque castles of Europe. It has to be located very close to the Bogs Gard Farm in Vasby.

By car
From Stockholm: take the E18 for Oslo/EnkŲping, turning off at Bro onto the 269/263 and following the signs for Skokloster. This is only 70 km, but it will take you an hour or so. Alternatively you can follow the E4 northwards, leaving by the Mšrsta exit for the 263, which takes you past Sigtuna and from there to Skokloster and EnkŲping. After you leave the 263 for the Sko peninsula (SkohalvŲn) you drive for 12 km along a country road traversing historic ground and lined with runestones and lush farmland.

There is an interesting map which puts the above roads into perspective:

Apskip, you're right, I should not assume there are no hits in the process.  I was considering the process up to the first hit only.  But, it is easy to adapt the analysis for many hits.  What I've done is to adjust the number of remaining flags after each flag is found.  So, for example, (1 - 7/167)  gets replaced with (1 - 6/167) after the first flag is found.  I let the flags be found at the 50% point of each sequence of tries.

So the way this works is any or all teams are opening haybales.  After the 18th haybale is opened there is a flag (we're going by the 50% rule).  Now there are 167 haybales left and 6 flags left.  After 19 more haybales are opened someone finds a 2nd flag (still going by the 50% rule). Now there are 148 haybales left and 5 flags left. After 20 more haybales are opened someone finds a 3rd flag (still going by the 50% rule).  Now there are 128 haybales left and 4 flags left. After 21 more haybales are opened someone finds a 4th flag (still going by the 50% rule).  Now there are 107 haybales left and 3 flags left.  After 23 more haybales are opened the last racer finds the 5th flag (still going by the 50% rule).  Now there are 84 haybales left and 2 flags left.

As you can see the average number of tries that the 5 racers make is 101/5 = 20.2.   I know that this result differs from your average of 26.6.  I think this is a somewhat complicated statistical problem.  Applying 186 divided by 7   (186/7 = 26.6)   to the problem without further accommodations for the changing odds is too much of a simplification that leads to an incorrect result.

Not sure if this was captured already - but the unused detour I believe was in Sigurdsristning:

Still trying to find the exact location in GE

Why do you believe that?

The ferry to Grona Lund goes takes only 5 minutes from Gamla Stand to Djurgarden Island. You can also get there from Slusseen Island in 8 minutes. Which one was correct for teams to get to Grona Lund? I don't know and may not be able to get appropraite information on this.

There are 5 different ferrylines, and dozens of stops around Stockholm

It would be interesting to know what their exact instructions were. Most teams took the regular Djurgarden ferry to Allmaana grand landing (seen here (http://www.360cities.net/image/djurg-rdskajen) next to Grona Lunds), but Brian/Ericka took a Hop on Hop off (http://www.stromma.se/en/Sightseeing/Stockholm/Boat-tours/Hop-on-Hop-off1/) sightseeing boat (which included free admission to GL!). Were they told to take a ferry or just a boat? And why no taxis?

Slowhatch,

I again do not know for sure, but I am willing to hypothesize that no taxis were needed because the distance from the Arlanda Express to the dock is relatively short and could be done on foot if teams did not wish to take the tunnelbahn. Arland Express has a main station at Klarabergsviadukten 72. Here is a map of central Stockholm:

Central Stockholm Map (http://www.visit-stockholm.com/maps-stockholm/Innerstan60procent.jpg)

The place where the Arlanda Experss train arrives is near the label #53. The public transit network is shown below. It indicates that the Tunnelbahncan be taken from adjacent to Centralterminalen on the T-Centralen line one stop T-Gamla station to Slussen, where a short walk to the Djurgšrdsfšrjan ferry(dock marked #55 which is ont unique on the lower right of that island) will take them a few hundred yards mostly east to GronaLund.

Maybe the Red X was red paint?

In between yelling at your brother about hay bales, you get bored and decide to paint a X on the bottom of your gnome because you are bored.  As a hidden benefit, you tweaked a whole bunch of TAR spoilers.

I was just curious about the absence of cabs in general: the only cab I saw in the episode was leading B/E to the detour. I was surprised the 4-pack didn't follow a cab as well, like they did at Groningen (the beginning of the end for Montana, I think).
As far the boats go, all the teams took the Djurgarden ferry from Slussenterminal (left), except for B/E which took the HOHO boat from Nybroplan (right). The distance from Central Station is about the same, roughly 4/5 mile.

Every time Dan screamed at Sam, I laughed my arse off. That was so funny. He just couldn't shut his mouth until like 2 hrs. later.

If I had been Sam, I woulda threatened to quit if Dan wouldn't quit being a nagging you know what.

I strongly think it was just glue to stick the clue in the base of the gnome... Sam & Dan unsticked it, and the glue could be seen?

I dunno theres something whanky with the gnomes, I've watched this episode 10 times or more and everyone's gnome base changes in different scenes.

I noticed that too.  And the red X, was definetely bigger than the clue.  IIRC didn't it run from edge to edge almost, and the clue didn't look like it did.

Could TPTB be messing with us???

I think there was more than one gnome, as Luke has stated, if one breaks it is replaced. They were really pushing the gnome huh? They had to carry it to the detour for product placement when they could very well have left it in their cars.

I think Sam was very patient his brother. Dan seems to be too much of a Princess. A 360 degree turn for the cameras. That's what I saw.

Point proved. He is bitching like a little girl tonight. Sam, knock the crap out of him. I think we all would love to see it.

Well in fairness for the early half of the season Sam is the more vocal towards his brother and events of the race (at least by footage and clips).

In the Gary/Matt explosion scene, their gnome was shown unprotected (unlike all the prior teams). It somehow made it through the rain of exploded particles unscathed on the telecast, but what if in reality it was busted and had ot be replaced?

Yeah, but last week he was crying like a baby, tonight he was yelling again. What a douche!
