An Amazing Race (http://journals.worldnomads.com/matt_and_alson/post/18605.aspx)
*Sure, the highlight today should have been the magnificent visit to Angkor Wat, but I'll be the first to admit I was a little obsessed with the filming of a certain, unnamed reality show that airs on Tuesday nights on CBS, that features pairs of people adventuring on a global scavenger hunt.
*I think you catch my drift. I even got filmed helping one of the contestants find her clue (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15372.msg300232.html#msg300232) and signed my life away to CBS, or at least signed away any shot of royalities from a brief glimpse of fame!
*We'll definitely be watching when the new season starts to see if we can spot ourselves in the "travel documentary" that two of the contestants said they were in.

*........while I made my way to Siem Reap, by boat . Wise choice. The water is low, but we only got snagged a few times, making it here in about six hours. I've really enjoyed boat travel in SE Asia so I was glad to have one more opportunity before leaving this part of the world.

*We also witnessed upon arrival what appeared to be a segment being filmed for Amazing Race.
*Before we could take off from the dock, we had to sit and wait while they filmed some couple with backpacks stacking baskets and then jumping in the back of a truck

More from chrisrae  (http://www.travbuddy.com/travel-blogs/5219/Cambodias-Culinary-Delights-Battambang-133) from peach (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15372.msg300656.html#msg300656)

Message from Chrisrae:
*It was an African American couple.  (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15372.msg300656.html#msg300656) I just uploaded the only pick I have to my blog entry "cambodia's culinary delights." It's the last picture in the series.
*I saw them after arriving near seim reap by boat from battambang, traveling through lake tonle sap. It was about 2:30 or 3 in the afternoon on a Sunday.
*They were at the water's edge. We were kept away but I saw the guy stacking some baskets I've seen them use to transport pigs and she was holding their bags.
*They then jumped in awaiting trucks and were transported with the cameraman and got out near a wat outside of town. I kept onto town so I don't know what happened next.
Hope that helps!

*A friend of mine was in Siem Reap, Cambodia a couple of days ago and saw:
*"an African American couple down by the dock, and she was holding their backpacks and he was stacking baskets and then they jumped in the back of a waiting truck and off they went. They kept filming them while in the back of the truck, and then they got out and were heading up to a wat I think"

*Yes ! they are definitely contestants from the Amazing Race Show.
*We were at Tonle Sap Lake and saw route markers (Flags in red and yellow) on 6 boats at the pier.
*There were camera crew but we did not see the contestants. Very exciting !

Blog per  Slowhatch (http://rezworldtour.blogspot.com/2008/05/amazing-race-following-amazing-rez-haha.html) They were in Angkor Wat the same time as my group, so if you happen to see that episode, you might see one of the Cambodian guys in my group helping him find the clue (look for people in a bright green t).

Lorna (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.msg302364.html#msg302364) joins us and shares photos and info:

*We were at Angkor Wat on the 4th May when they were filming the Amazing Race.
*We only saw one team at Angkor for the whole time we were there which was a couple of hours. This team was both male, one with orange hair and the other with brown hair and they were at the clue box at 11.30am. [/color]
*We also happened to see all the teams walking around Siem Reap town that evening and I recall seeing 6 teams. I would love to visit your website and I have plenty of photos I will send to your email address
*I was checking the time stamp on  my photos from Angkor Wat and from 11.30 - 12.30pm  that was the only team that came through.
*Just for curiosity sake the guy with the orange hair was really nice and managed to exchange a few words.
*Come to think of it there would have been another team there but they were leaving at 11.30. Thats what got my attention in the first place..the camera crew running outside. I couldn't tell you who it was though. But im positive the team i saw was the only one there from 11.30 because the guy with the brown hair was the only person waiting while his team mate was doing the road block.

*To finish the day we have seen the sunset in the main temple of Angkor Wat and which it has been our surprise that we have found ourselves to the presenter of our favorite program of the TV (Amazing Race). It results that they are preparing the next season of the program from deal about a gymkhana of the world and the winner being carried by that going round a prize of a million dolars! Has been very curious the encounter and we have been able to speak a little with the presenter and the equipment of the program (the very charming and nice people truth). A day with an unexpected end!!!!

A day in Phnom Penh (Cambodia)
Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and it’s a 6-hour bus ride from Siem Reap. We were hoping to take the Mekong Express bus or plane going there but both were fully booked so we ended up taking a regular airconditioned bus which turned out to be a blessing in disguise because we chanced upon the shoot of Amazing Race right across where our bus was parked!:) Photo-taking isn't actually allowed but we were able to snap some shots from the bus.

Just to catch up....
So I just got back into Thailand from Cambodia.... which is why i haven't posted in a while. Ends up that Cambodia is not a telecommunications mecca. Anyways, everything has kinda been a whirlwind. Covered 3 countries in 2 weeks and it kinda feels like we are on "The Amazing Race".... and i mean literally. Yesterday we were in Angkor Wat (more of that story later... it is AMAZING... you should look up pictures... seriously a Wonder of the Ancient world--- i thought better than the stuff i saw in Rome) The Amazing Race was filming at Angkor the same day we were there. AND THEN... we end up at the airport to fly to Bangkok from Cambodia... and who was on our airplane.... thats right.... 3 teams competing on the next season of the Amazing Race. We are sitting there and then all the sudden all these camera and sound guys are filming everything. And the producer guy was sitting in the seat right behind me and vida. CRAZY!! So now we consider ourselves official unofficial cast members. And before all this started I was telling vida that i thought it felt like we were on the amazing race.

and yet another blog   (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.msg302210.html#msg302210)
more Siem Reap (http://paulmarkthirnan.blogspot.com/2008/05/angkor-wat-cambodia.html)
We didn't manage to take a picture of it but i think we ran into a couple doing the Amazing Race here. We'll have to check out the next season but the couple was being followed by a camera man and they had to find a specific face in the ruins. I did my best to make a cameo between this and Bollywood I am really getting my face out there.

If Marissa & Brooke (as I suspect) are eliminated in the previous leg, I guess this is where Aja & Ty get knocked out -- if this is an elimination leg.  Too bad, but at least Kelly & Christy survive.

The gas task (if it is a task) is quite common (http://www.flickr.com/photos/31639398@N00/489502312/) in Cambodia; people either crank portable pumps or pour it out of old Johnnie Walker/soda bottles.

I have some insights into the diverse flight arrangments from New Zealand that resulted from the wide range of pitstop times. I see 3 groups getting these plane options, starting at 130pm:

Ken/Tina - expect earliest at airport is 1230pm(Chateau would say 45 minutes sooner); they will get QF114 AKL SYD 1350 1510 connecting with QF319 SYD SIN 1635 2145 and then 3K595 SIN REP 0600+1 0700+1

Second Group(Terence/Sarah, Kelly/Christy, Toni/Dallas, Nick/Starr, Dan Andrew maybe) - EK433 AKL BNE 1655 1835 then flight continues on to Singapore with BNE SIN EK433 2045 0150+1 and then SIN REP 3K595 0600+1 0700+1

Aja/Ty - they are probably a bit lonely brining up the rear on AKL SIN 2355 0645+1 SQ282 connecting there to SQ970 0845+1 1010+1, then PG905 BKK REP 1100+1 1220+1

If the above is accurate(which I believe), then the last group will be about 5 hours 20 minutes behind. Unless there is an hours of operation in the Siem Reap/Angkor Wat area, they will probably be eliminated there unless saved by a NEL.

Obviously the team that's in trouble with the law is Terence & Sarah while I'm willing to be that the Racer who doesn't hesitate to lie is Nick.  He & Starr have been portrayed as sneaky in at least one episode and in their interview with Reality News Online, Mark & Bill said that Kelly & Christy probably blamed Nick & Starr for the sports bra incident because the brother & sister were seen as sneaky -- which is what I believed.  So Nick (& Starr) will be burning bridges with more teams than just Kelly & Christy.

I agree it's most likely Nick... More evidence that they're playing dirty... in this video on cbs.com Terence & Sarah say Nick & Starr deserve bad things to happen because they are "bad people". Apparently Starr accused Terence of stealing Nick's bag when he had it with him the whole time... we never saw that (maybe among other things??)

If Starr falsely accused Terence of stealing Nick's bag when he had it with him the whole time, then it's more proof that Nick's the one who burns bridges with the other teams.  I don't mind being conniving if you really need to be (like not helping others out when you're near the back of the pack and could be eliminated), but Nick & Starr are taking it too far.  No wonder Kelly & Christy mistakenly accused Starr of throwing Christy's sports bra off the ledge (even though I doubt Starr would do so because she'd get nothing out of it)!

You know that Chateau is completely right on this but that brings up another issue. Terence and Sarah should never have had the opportunity to beg for or be offered $500 nor should any other racer. Notice that they are not showing those activities on the normal episode because World Race Productions and CBS know how their audience feels on this issue. Begging and accepting gifts should be banned, as driving over the speed limit. These activities demean the Amazing Race because they take away the level playing field essential to a good race!

In other TAR seasons, they seems to emphasize driving the speed limit.  Do we know how much time it costs them?  At the beginning of the leg it is not that costly if they make the flight ... which other information show that they do make the flight.

  Thanks for the preview link, banzai.  It's obvious, but races arrive at Siem Reap Intl. Airport.

eta: plane appears to be Jetstar Airways (as per apskip's prediction).  ;)

Well it was my prediction after a point in time. However the first person to spot that flight, with Jetstar not followed by the service I use for flight information so that I missed it, was Chateau!

In the extended preview Tina mentions that everybody else was able to finish the roadblock so why can't she? So I think it's safe to assume that Ken/Tina are lagging behind in this episode.

Love these commercials!! I think this is going to be a GREAT episode. I think the clues deinifely refer to the teams Belle Book says. We have already seen 1,2, and 4 in the ads and Nick & Starr are the only jerks likely to lie to another team. As Sarah says in the extra video, I think they're "bad people"!!  :knuckles:

I think we have boats,  Detours of collect fish/fish baskets vs collect teeth?  then to Blue trucks then to Angkor Wat for the Roadblock at the temples but would be nice to know that...

I have to find them but maybe we could compare to your temple/truck times you did...

I think everybody except Ty & Aja arrive on the same 7 AM'ish flight and then go to the blue trucks.  We know those were located where a tourist on an inbound bus was stopped.  I kind of located that place but some stuff is just not matching up so I do wonder if I got it right.  Anyway, they are there early in the day.  I bet the blue trucks take them to the riverside docks where the boats are.  It is still morning, as in 8 to 10 am, when they are motoring out off the river's mouth and into the floating village.  That is the Detour spot.   They they take the blue trucks to Angkor Wat where we know they are there in the 11:30 to noon range.

Ty & Aja sealed their fate in New Zealand and won't be arriving until the 12:20 flight lands.  Something like 5 hours behind   :ascared  The 18 hour Pit Stop did them no favor.  Without it, Ken & Tina would have arrived the night before and Ty & Aja would be with the rest of the gang on the same 7 am flight.

I'd guess TPTB did not want Ken & Tina to run away with it all.

The Tonle Sap sighting is where Chrisrae saw them--as posted just upstream.

This is a private message from Chrisrae in answer to my questions:

Quote
It was an African American couple. I just uploaded the only pick I have to my blog entry "cambodia's culinary delights." It's the last picture in the series.

I saw them after arriving near seim reap by boat from battambang, traveling through lake tonle sap. It was about 2:30 or 3 in the afternoon on a Sunday. They were at the water's edge. We were kept away but I saw the guy stacking some baskets I've seen them use to transport pigs and she was holding their bags. They then jumped in awaiting trucks and were transported with the cameraman and got out near a wat outside of town. I kept onto town so I don't know what happened next.

Hope that helps!

This is what a pig basket might look like as described by Chrisrae, being stacked onto the blue truck (  :'( )

And here is the start of the fishies:

I want to play with the fish  :sucks

I finally found a team in the album. It's the mother and son team!

Could it be a roadblock? It seems he's going to retrieve a net which contains the fish

Looks like another dried fish task in the works ???

From the shots in the floating village on Tonle Sap

We know the Roadblock is at Angkor sooooooo we know the Mom/Son are doing a detour

I think this is the task being set up hired locals , they are bringing the net baskets and wooden boats, the fish are in the pens and this is where they have to retrieve them? also we see Phil being filmed near the fish pens.
We see the Mom/Son team returning? a basket/net to the one boat. But we hear from the one witness that the African American team was loading baskets into the back of  one of the blue trucks that we see.  And where do the 7 boats with flags come in?

Here are flights that Ken & Tina flight could have been on if the Pit Stop was the proper 12 hours.  I'm going with a checkin time of 9:20 am on May 2nd.  So they start driving to AKL at 9:20 pm on May 2nd.  They reach AKL just after midnight on May 3rd.  They can now take this flight sequence:

Singapore Airlines 7295 leaving AKL at 2:50 am and arriving in SIN at 8:35 am
Singapore Airlines 18 leaving SIN at 9:55 am and arriving in Seoul ICN at 5:20 pm
Asiana Airlines 737 leaving ICN at 8:00 pm and arriving in Siem Reap at 11:50 pm

or even better with this one

Singapore Airlines 7295 leaving AKL at 2:50 am and arriving in SIN at 8:35 am
Singapore Airlines 972 leaving SIN at 10:30 am and arriving in Bangkok at 11:55 am
Bangkok Airways 5915 leaving BKK at 1:10 pm and arriving Siem Reap at 2:30 pm

They would have completed the Siem Reap leg on May 3rd and be one day ahead for the outbound flights of the next leg.    (:;)

Peach, that video of Terence poling towards the dock is fabulous. It may cause me to reevaluate him more favorably.
What I find really fascinating is how Amazing Race boat tasks always involved one and only one boat that breaks down. It's almost as if someone altered the engine in some way that caused that or the boat captains are ordered by World Race Productions to do a little sabotage. If so, who makes these decisions and how?

That video shows something else that's interesting to me. Nick and Starr, Toni and Dallas and Ken and Tina are the only other teams shown in that group, which based on its composition should be the front group.

So, the issue is "Where are Kelly/Christy? Where are Andrew/Dan?" because nobody should be surprised that Aja/Ty are not there. Kelly/Christy finished #3 at the Summerhill Pitstop while Andrew/Dan finished #6. I could easily see Andrew/Dan not being able to catch the 4:55pm flight from Auckland. If they release from the pitstop after 2pm, then they would not. Another possible explanation is them doing the teeth DETOUR. With Kelly/Christy they were released from the pitstop ahead of Toni/Dallas and Nick/Starr. What happened to knock them out of the top group? Again, maybe they did the teeth DETOUR and are not really behind?

Title: Re: EP5:10/26 "Do It Like a Madman"

What occured to me was the "if a vehicle breaks through no fault of your own" ....

We know that there were 7 boats waiting for the racers, so do they even have a spare somewhere? Terence poling the boat is fabulous TV but where is the spare? There may not be one so if there isn't let's watch for a possible unexplained time credit--which might or might not happen. And in any case, even if the boat arrives, there is no time credit for the delay in the boat arrival. T&S got this part of their leg screwed for sure.

The blogger said 6, but I count 7 flags there (the flags on each end are almost hidden--compare my arrows below to the original (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jameskhoo/2472602864/sizes/o/)). Doesn't production often hire one extra vehicle/animal/etc. for tasks?

The 7 boats question can be settled easily. Since there are 7 teams left in AR13 until the end of this episode 5, there must be one boat available for each team in case all teams elect that DETOUR.  A spare to be made available for Terence/Sarah might happen because Kelly/Christy chose a different detour, although not if Kelly/Christy needed a boat to get to the teeth DETOUR.

In the entire history of the Amazing Race, I cannot ever remember time credits for teams having bad luck things happen on a boat ride. I can remember them when Production screws up, like when a vehicle battery was drained for camera recharging.
Title: Re: EP5:10/26 "Do It Like a Madman"
Post by: georgiapeach on October 25, 2008, 11:11:15 AM
I think all teams have to use the boats at some time just for transport around this "magical floating village". . , so I am concerned that there IS no spare for poor T&S.

I think the Detours are  find and collect a fish basket vs collect some items (teeth, maybe something sewing related, maybe more?)

Now we do see T&S neck and neck w/ Ken and Tina in the blue trucks...so before or after? ???

I'm working on a mini Timeline based on all our sightings that day but it will take a while--like all day I think,

So did I, thats what the preview really made me think.

As for the boats yes the producers will replace any vehicle that breaks down, but replacement time has varied over the years from just a couple of moments (like Tian and Jaree having to take the replacement at the starting line) to over 30 minutes).

The only exception is if its a mass transit vehicle that they have problems on and then its up to that transit authority and however they deal with problems that arise.

Title: Re: EP5:10/26 "Do It Like a Madman"
Post by: mswood on October 25, 2008, 01:57:49 PM
If the production only secured 7 vehicles, then I would assume the replacement vehicle would be either one of the boats after another team had finished if all were in use.

Since it often takes the car replacements half and hour or more, depending on the tasks teams might not be in those boats for a large amount of time and one could be freed up in roughly the same amount of time.

I have always wondered on legs with a significant amount of driving time, where they get their replacement vehicle.  If they are sent from the original location where they got their vehicle in the first place, or would they just rent another that much close in cases of far distance.

So far I don't think its happened where teams have driven hundreds of miles away from their starting point and then broken down.  That wait would suck if the replacement had to come from the starting point.

And apskip is absolutely right teams are not given time credits for events that happen that are random bad luck.

We've had croaked cabs (Season 3 Andre and Damon), cabs taking people to the wrong locations (lots, and lots of these), all sorts of vehicles breaking down, boats that break down, Buses, traffic being stopped for hours for royalty, ect....

No time credits.  Teams have been given credits for production errors (happen a couple times in season 1), once in season 2 final episodes, but did they get time credits in the Family edition for their battery issues (because I don't remember any).  Though in both cases it was non elimination legs.

Here are some great videos of Angkor Wat. The one of Tonle Sap gives you a feel for the "floating village".  80 villages, 2000 families

Ever since Season 1, TPTB have done their best not to let the first-place teams get too far ahead.  It's just a pity that the efforts to keep Ken & Tina from getting too big of a lead hurt Aja & Ty and will probably ensure their elimination -- or at least give them a Speed Bump.

Belle Book, was it World Race Productions or Aja/Ty that got them into last place? Somebody has to be in last place each leg. The probability that they will be eliminated is higher for the last place team than any other team.

I think the problem Aja/Ty face is the result of both their abysmal performance in New Zealand and the particular timing of flight schedules. In many bunching situations, all the teams catch up. Aja/Ty fell so far behind that they are going to arrive in Siem Reap 5 hours 20 minutes behind most (and maybe all) of the other teams. That will actually be a reduction of their deficit vs. some of the other teams from the Summerhill pitstop.

I do not think it has anything to do with the Fast Forward team. Again, when a Fast Forward is offered chances are that someone will take it. World Race Productions was not trying to maneuver Ken/Tina into the lead. They had to earn it.

Wow, slowhatch! Terrible pic or no, it is the ONLY one we have of the actual station! :jumpy:

Can we get a match here? Supposedly this was at the "bus Station" IIRC.

I haven't found a photo match, but it has to be the bus station area: you can see red gas drums next to each vehicle, set up for the start of the task.

Actually I think the boat replacement problem is not that serious. First, as Aja/Ty are not there yet, the production team could arrange the spare boat for Terence/Sarah to use first, then the same boat will be used by Aja/Ty again. Also, the production team could switch the boat they use for filming for T/S, I think this is the way they do it when there is a car breakdown in the middle of nowhere or the starting point is too far away.

Does anyone think the coming episode is a NEL? I think this is possible because if Aja/Ty were that far behind and they were still doing tasks instead of being sent to pitstop directly, the next leg should be a NEL.

.......
So, the issue is "Where are Kelly/Christy? Where are Andrew/Dan?" ..........

I found Andrew & Dan in the "Land, Air and Sea" Preview.

I was just watching CBS shows from Fri night and decided to watch one of the commercials for anything new.  Caught sight of A/D.  Rewound and using Pause caught A/D just after the "By Sea" is shown and just before Sarah yelling fast, fast,.....  The frames show A/D on a boat probably still in the river.

Since N/S is 1st, D/T 2nd and K/T 3rd then A/D is 4th if they bypass T/S; or 5th if T/S stays ahead of them.  As to K/C at this point we only know they aren't 1, 2 or 3.

At CBS.COM the thumbnail for the 1:00 Preview under the Episode 5 clips has a frame with A/D.  Click to watch and pause at 25 sec and A/D on a boat will be found.

The new preview today has the V/O about the secrets of Cambodia.  At the V/O (right after showing T/S boat breaking down there's a shot of what looks like A/D in the water loading a basket into their boat.  Right after that is a shot of Aja walking in chest deep water.  Aja is wearing a pink top near the small pens.  She was not carrying or pulling anything.

It appears K/C are the only team that did the teeth, etc.

serendipity, I believe you are misinformed about how the filming of Amazing Race episodes happens. for each epsiode and each team there is a cameraman and a soundman/agent. They travel in all vehicles that a team does, which is why you frequently see the photographing of a team in the left side of the back seat of a taxi or one driving and the other behind on the same side in a car they drive. When in countries that adopted the British left hand side ocnvention, then those both shift to the opposite side. There is typically no trailing camera vehicle. The one exception that I can think of was in AR7 when Brian managed to crash his vehicle and a trailing vehicle did help some(but not Boston Rob) although there were probably some other instances.  However, the only person seriously injured in this crash was the cameraman.

I think it's only to what we know -- or at least to the results of the first Detour choice.  Kelly & Christy might actually be fourth overall while Andrew & Dan are either fourth at the first Detour choice or fifth, and thus would be either fifth or sixth overall.  Doesn't matter anyway -- Aja & Ty are so far behind that whoever's sixth overall is still safe.

I have heard that in certain places there are additional vehicles (security etc) who travel in convoy with the racers vehicle, and could quite possibly sometimes carry a camera man for some of those 'outside of the vehicle travelling' shots. I very much doubt however that they would give up their vehicle for a racer. And I also very much doubt that they would give a team another teams transportation, as that could seriously compromise the later teams race if the transportation wasn't back in time due to delays or further breakdowns. TAR must have a contingency plan for broken down vehicles, ie a spare vehicle located at the starting point or somewhere along the route, or an extra production vehicle that can be deployed if needed, and the length of time it takes to get the replacement is simply luck of the draw depending on where a team breaks down, and how far away the spare is.

Actually, I think they are all fairly close at the RB, excepting poor Aja/Ty of course.

Here's what I have so far--if I find more I'll add it into this post.  Posts from various of our sources!!

Nick at AW: clue in hand

Chateau d if:This shot was taken here between 11:24 and 11:32 am
Also seen by same person:As far as your questions, the guy was by himself, though there was also a blond girl (TINA) w a green shirt (not the one you see in the picture, she is from my group) and a white baseball hat also looking for whatever. I have no idea what exactly they were looking for, and the day I saw them was Sunday May 4, I think late AM my time.

A/D at cluebox AW

1130 per Lorna also who knows another team was there just before them

Christy here searching per Chateau=noon
(http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb140/ga--peach/TAR%2013/IMGP2059.jpg)

No sign of Terence/Sarah--how long are they delayed? per CBS their leg is screwed...

TY/Aja
spotted:
I saw them after arriving near seim reap by boat from battambang, traveling through lake tonle sap. It was about 2:30 or 3 in the afternoon on a Sunday. (Would still have AW RB to do)

We also happened to see all the teams walking around Siem Reap town that evening and I recall seeing 6 teams.
Also, Jason did NOT see Aja/Ty in the airport the following day

We know Phil was still at the Pitstop at sunset "To finish the day we have seen the sunset in the main temple of Angkor Wat and which it has been our surprise that we have found ourselves to the presenter of our favorite program of the TV (Amazing Race)."  Waiting for Ty/Aja??
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24168047@N03/2470380501/sizes/o/

So we have always been assuming that TY/Aja go out here.
But given the HUGE time distance from the other teams, it is not impossible that they just weren't seen in those 2 places because they weren't there yet.

SO I still think it is an elim, but it is not impossible for it to be a NEL based on the info above...

Aja: If we went in feeling bad about the fact that our flight came in two hours after everyone else's, we would have really defeated ourselves before we even began.

How far behind Andrew and Dan were you at the pit stop?
Aja: They were finished before we got off the plane.
Ty: It wasn't that far.
Aja: No, it was. They were finishing as we got off the plane.
Ty: You're making it sound like they finished a full day ahead of us. They finished two hours before we did.

Order of Finish:

1. Nick & Starr
2. Toni & Dallas
3. Ken & Tina
4. Kelly & Christy
5. Terence & Sarah
6. Andrew & Dan
7. Aja & Ty

In the interview Georgia Peach posted in their thread they state that the leg only took 2 hours to complete. They seem pretty clear on that. :duno:
Quote
Reality TV World: On the fifth leg, how far behind that second flight that left Auckland were you? The show didn't really make it clear.

Ty: We were just two hours behind. It was a short leg so... [On] the previous leg even if you had done it pretty fast you still were out there for seven or eight hours. This one was a short leg -- it was only a two hour leg -- so right as we were getting the cab to go to the gas station, Dan and Andrew were finishing it up. So they were about two hours ahead of us.

<snip>

Reality TV World: About how far behind Andrew and Dan do you think you arrived at the Cambodian Pit Stop?

Aja: It was two hours.

Ty: Yeah, about two hours. Everybody did the course in two hours, give or take a minute here and there. We finished two hours behind them, and it might've played out a little bit differently if we had gotten a fair shake at it.

<snip>

They actually said that our time was the best time on the leg and if we had got a fair shake than we would have probably been first.

Mrs. Shrek, you missed the article by In touch Weekly and posted Marigold just ahead of your Reality TV World article in the Aja/Ty Racers thread:

Quote
The Amazing Race
"We went out fighting"

The Amazing Race
Aja and Ty
Eliminated October 26

You were in last place the entire leg, how did you manage to keep such a positive outlook?
Ty: I was hoping it would be a non-elimination leg. All we needed was one team to make a really bad mistake and we would have been okay. You never know what could happen and we could have been right back in it.
Aja: Yeah, and for me I just felt like if we were to have approached that leg with a defeatist attitude, it would have affected everything that we did and how hard we pushed ourselves. If we went in feeling bad about the fact that our flight came in two hours after everyone else's, we would have really defeated ourselves before we even began. And I just looked at it like if we are going to go out, we're going to go out like champions. I'm still happy that we went out fighting.

Now, why would Aja saw that they landed when Dan/Andrew were finishing? Because that is accurate. Why would Ty say that they finished 2 hours behind when the planned tasks took the best team at least 4 hours 35 minutes per my analysis and supported by visual evidence? I am not sure, but there are 2 possible explanations;

1. World Race Productions, because it no longer mattered and to allow Phil to finish up sooner, shortened their tasks
to just a few to allow them to finish in 2 hours.
2. Ty has developed a fiction that suits his self-concept of someone who only loses by 2 hours.

You the reader be the judge(although I am disappointed Mrs. Shrek that you did not accept my evidence at face value when I stated that multiple statments about this were contradictory and indeed they are). Where I stand is pretty clear.

I think it doesn't matter, we'll find more info out this week.

But sometimes racers are not the best people to know their own  leg--it is all a blur to them and until they hit the mat they never know exactly where they are in relationship to other teams. Look how surprised K/C were to hear that they were 5th.

BUT they are giving these interviews with the benefit of long hindsight and the opportunity to talk things over post race with other teams. For all we know, they may have discussed this for hours w/ D/A in Elimination station (or not!) .

So if they say 2 hours, I have to think that they may be close until we know otherwise. I did find it interesting that they were told they ran the best time on the leg.

I'm not trying to get at you Askip. None of us were there, so everything here is based on assumption rather than fact. AJa and Ty's leg could have been shortened, they could be awful at estimating time, they could have somehow done an absolutely superb leg and did the tasks in 2ish hours, or something else that we don't know about.... :duno:
I know you have put a lot of time and research into your calculations, and I'm not saying you are wrong or right, I'm merely stating that Aja and Ty seem to be fairly stuck on the 2 hour concept.

Here's my best guess at the actual flights that were taken

Ken & Tina
Terence & Sara
Singapore Airlines SQ 286 leaving AKL at 12:25 pm and arriving SIN at 7:00 pm
JetStar Asia 3K 595 Leaving SIN at 6:00 am and arriving REP at 7:05 am

Kelly & Christy
Dallas & Toni
Nick & Starr
Dan & Andrew
Emirates EK 433 leaving AKL at 4:55 pm and arriving in Brisbane at 6:35 pm
Continue with Emirates EK 433 leaving Brisbane at 8:05 pm and arriving in SIN at 1:50 am
Fly Jetstar Asia 595 leaving SIN at 6:00 am and arriving in REP at 7:05 am.

Aja & Ty
Singapore Airlines SQ 282 leaving AKL at 11:55 pm and arriving SIN at 6:45 am
Silkair MI 616 Leaving SIN at 10:25 am and arriving REP at 11:35 am

or if Ty is correct when he says they landed 2 hours after the other teams then this was what they took, albeit hard to believe they could catch a 6:00 pm flight after a 3:04 pm Pit Stop release, but it is the only way I could find to get them to Siem Reap at 9 am.

Qantas QF 44 leaving AKL at 6:00 pm and arriving in Sydney at 7:30 pm
Qantas QF 1 leaving Sydney at 8:50 pm and arriving in Bangkok at 3:05 am
Bangkok Airways PG 903 leaving Bangkok at 8:00 am and arriving in Siem Reap at 9:00 am

From the blogger at Bayon:

We'll have to check out the next season but the couple was being followed by a camera man and they had to find a specific face in the ruins.
Maybe he saw teams carrying the echo-chamber token to the pitstop.

This shot was taken between 11:47 and 11:52 am (assumes May 4th).

I'd concur that the plane landed on time

the blogger was probably just saying that the racers had to run into the ruins and FIND the face that had their clue on, but we just interpreted it as faces ON the actual ruins...that's what I thought anyway..

So, Chateau, I find that your conclusion about SilkAir being the airline Ty/Aja used to fly into Siem Reap to be correct. Since May 4 was a Ssunday(not a Monday as I reported earlier), then MI616 was available to Ty/Aja. Sicne that would have been their best option once in Singapore that morning, it is very likely that they took it.

May 4 was a Sunday (http://www.gocambodia.com/cambodia/calendar.asp), yes? That's the date posted by all our correspondents, and it's confirmed by the flightboard at Changi; it also syncs with Siem Reap arrivals (http://www.cambodia-airports.com/siemreap/en/info.asp?s=timetables) (although granted it's a winter schedule).

Perhaps one of our Kiwi friends can answer this question.  In New Zealand does a person who is given a ticket for speeding have to appear in traffic court to find out how much the fine is; or can a person merely mail in the amount which is on the ticket.  Finally, do the authorities place a hold on this person so that he can not leave the country through immigration/customs until said fine is paid.

So if Terence actually did receive a ticket for speeding when and how did he pay the fine?  According to what we were shown on the aired program, he arrived at the airport at around 9:30 and left on a flight to Singapore at 12:35.

Or do they do in New Zealand  what we used to do in Mexico and include money when we hand over our driver's license?

But although Terence asks Sarah if this is any way to treat a person who received a speeding ticket, was he just saying that to make her feel bad.  From the picture, he does look like the police officer is just giving him a warning about speeding ("I'm sorry") he says to the officer and not an actual ticket which would have meant he probably could not have left the country until it was verified and paid.

Aja and Ty give an interview that says they were also pulled over for driving on the wrong side of the road. Because they only received a warning, they did not receive a penalty. So since they got a penalty, I think we do have to assume that T/S actually got a ticket.

I heard a reference on the CBS video by Terence to an actual (not hypothetical) speeding ticket he received. His situation was totally different from Ty's situation. Terence was on a motoroway of some sort in broad daylight with speed limit signs posted. It is the tradition as indicated (not by me) in an earlier post in New Zealand that tickets are always issued for 15 km/hr or more. He was 17 km/hr over.

Ty on the other hand was driving on the wrong side of an unfamiliar road early in the morning after leaving the airport:
"Why did you get pulled over?
Ty: We got off the plane at 3 a.m. I’ll take full responsibility for this. Naturally, you want to be on the other side of the road. I was driving on the wrong side of the road.
Aja: I told you to turn last minute, too. I take partial responsibility."
So I would not have expected to get a ticket because of the situation and because he was clearly identifiable by his accent and driver's license as an American. In that situation, good sense dictates a warning rather than a ticket.

He has the option of paying online (http://www.police.govt.nz/service/road/infringements.html). It's the penalty that's puzzling; it doesn't have the same stink to it as Andy's penalty, but it certainly is odd. If it did not (as was said in the VO) affect the outcome, then why not let them wait it out and be done with it? It will be interesting to see the departure times next week.

Well, I guess we already know that they got the penalty...

Did anyone notice on the CBS site the order of finish? I guess the 30 minute penalty was already applied moving Christy and Kelly up one spot. I hope that makes them happy  "FIFTH!?"

Order of Finish:

1. Nick & Starr
2. Toni & Dallas
3. Ken & Tina
4. Kelly & Christy
5. Terence & Sarah
6. Andrew & Dan
7. Aja & Ty

No they don't have to go to court for a speeding ticket (unless it is 50kph over the limit). There are set fines which are issued depending on what speed you were doing. I imagine it would probably be around $NZ80-120 for 17kph over. You have 30 days to pay the ticket which can be done online as Slowhatch mentioned, or with an international Bank Check. If the fine wasn't paid by the due date, it would then go to court, and a hold could/would be placed on a person leaving the country....which as a foreigner would probably mean nothing would happen unless he ever tried to visit NZ again.

I would definitely NOT recommend trying to offer money to a cop in NZ to try and get off your ticket. Although I am sure there are always some cops who can be bribed, generally you would just end up in even more trouble.

On the next leg, Aja and Ty arrived in Cambodia a full six hours after their nearest competition. They had little hope of catching up.

Were our racers at risk of land mines in Angkor Wat?? :ascared

The Amazing Race 13, Episode 5

Should The Amazing Race 13 have gone to Cambodia? And should they have sent the racers to search the vast Angkor Wat complex for a particular temple, on foot, without giving them a landmine awareness briefing first, and requiring that they be accompanied by a guide to keep them on the paths and away from any areas not known to have been cleared of landmines?

I think Edward Hasbrouck is the best travel writer today, but I can't understand his position on Angkor Wat. Millions of tourists go through there annually. The people running the complex and facilitating tourism there have managed to keep them away from whatever unsafe areas exist.
