Exclusive: 'The Amazing Race' producer talks about upcoming season

After twelve seasons, The Amazing Race viewers grown used to seeing the show's contestants participate in some unusual tasks as they race around the world.  However, according to co-creator and executive producer Bertram van Munster, the show will be kicking the danger level up a notch during this fall's thirteenth edition.

"[This season] you will see a tricky one where you will wonder 'How in the world did they have the guts to do this?' You are really going to wonder," van Munster told Reality TV World in an exclusive interview last week.

"I look[ed] at it and I [went] 'Oh what was I thinking? Oh my god, this could go very wrong.'  And then it does."

But despite the unexpected task drama, The Amazing Race's thirteenth season -- which filmed this past summer and will premiere this Sunday at 8PM ET/PT on CBS -- will still feature the same structure and elements the show has become known for, according to van Munster.

"I think it’s an unbelievable trek around the globe," he told Reality TV World. "We have a fun cast [and] we had a great time with them. They performed splendidly, they were exhausted, they were furious with each other, they loved each other, they were ready to give up. You name it, all of the emotions you can possible imagine on [a show] like this."

Unlike CBS' other long-running Big Brother and Survivor reality series, which have regularly used new twists over the years, The Amazing Race's thirteenth season stuck to a format very similar to the show's previous editions  -- a move van Munster said was a deliberate decision to adhere the six-time Emmy-winning show's original concept.

"The more you start messing with an original concept, usually it doesn't get much better. It doesn't really improve," he said.

Instead, van Munster said he placed additional emphasis on designing intriguing task challenges for the new season.

"What I've done [for this season is] I've come up with so many insane challenges that it should do the trick and I think it will be plenty exciting for an audience to watch it," he told Reality TV World.

Rather than moving away from the show's original concept, The Amazing Race 13 will actually attempt to return closer to it and feature "clues" -- which despite their name, have devolved into more basic instructions over the years -- that are more complex and closer to those used in the show's initial editions.

"I think that you'll definitely see it... we really try to go back to the old ways so the audience doesn't feel like we're 'FedEx-ing' people around the world," van Munster told Reality TV World.

"We are very diligent and I am extremely aggressive about it that the show stays really truly original and distinct to the original core as possible."

In addition, the season also happened to play out as one of the few The Amazing Race editions in which one of the competing teams failed to make it to the course's finish line -- an unexpected development that was welcomed by van Munster.

"I like it when people don't make it to the finish line," he said.

Non-elimination Pit Stops will also return as part of The Amazing Race's thirteenth season, according to van Munster, who said he was unsure why fellow executive producer Jonathan Littman had incorrectly told reporters -- and van Munster had then subsequently confirmed -- the stops had been eliminated from last fall's twelfth edition.

"That was our mistake," van Munster, who admits to not being a fan of the non-elimination Pit Stops, said of the confusion. "We probably all had jet lag, but there's always a non-elimination in there."

Last season's new Speed Bump tasks -- the show's latest version of a penalty for the team that arrives last at a non-elimination Pit Stop -- will return for The Amazing Race's thirteenth season, according to the producer.

Viewers will also see a broader range of equipment brought by the contestants this season, including a decision by "Best Friends" Mark Yturralde and Bill Hahler to run the race using extra small backpacks.

"We had people showing up with 80-pound backpacks and we had people showing up with almost nothing," van Munster said. "It's their choice. This is a true reality show. You show up with whatever you have and then we turn you loose and you have to figure out how to do it. We don't sit there and guide [contestants] and manipulate it and edit it and all of that nonsense. We just turn them loose and off you go."

Van Munster said that while the thirteenth season's course -- which covers approximately 30,000 miles of travel and is similar to the length of last fall's edition -- is shorter than most of the show's previous seasons, it features many "really original" locations and will not seem short to viewers.

"If you look at where we're going it's unbelievable," van Munster said. "There are a couple of straight-line-shots that make the mileage a little shorter, but we are going all over the place on this one."

"If you look at it you say 'How can it [only] be 30,000 miles?' ... we have such insane plane rides."

Bolivia, Kazakhstan and Cambodia will be among several of the new countries visited for the first time.

"When I went to Kazakhstan everyone thought I was going to pull a Borat on them," van Munster said with a laugh.

In addition, Cambodia also proved to be difficult due to the country's lack of organized transportation systems.

"The infrastructure consists of mopeds, taxis, and buses -- and lots of them -- so it doesn't make [travel] easy," van Munster explained.

Overall, van Munster said he was extremely pleased with the season's result.

"I'm very proud of it," he said.  "It's an insane race once again."

woohoo!!! it's about time they stopped hand-feeding the racers on where to go. They were pretty much just shy of giving them a GPS and access to google maps! Thank goodness they're going back to the cryptic clues where teams have to actually *think* about where they have to go.

Like that one in South Africa (i think) where they were told to make their way to where the earth growls at the sky, or something like that...and it was to Victoria Falls where the mist looks like it's growling at the sky. (i'm sure someone with a better memory will correct all my mistakes on that lolol). Or the one where they were told to pay a tribute by offering up a car? They had to figure out it was a paper car and had to locate the correct fire to toss them into.

can't wait can't wait!

It was the "Smoke that Thunders" in AR1 episode 1, for a stretch of the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe going over Victoria Falls.

I completely agree that going back to clues that require some deciphering is way better for viewers than the "Go To" directives which have been typical since AR1 (the paper cars incident excepted). That will bring brains into the equation along with the speed, strength, agility, and ability to read a map and navigate that are already key to victory in Amazing Races.

CBS is sticking with winners, looking for new ones

logo cbsFor CBS, tradition and consistency are the keystones for success. So while CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves talked about a few new projects in an interview with TV Week, he also shared the news that the network will be booking more Survivor and The Amazing Race editions in the seasons to come.

To this I state, hooray! Especially for The Breathtaking Race. There’s a reason this show has won the Emmy so many times. The current race has been terrific. Survivor seems to be having a bounce back season, as well.

Amazing’ lessons
Spanish teacher Nelson Rojas, left, watches as Toni, a contestant from the 13th season of "The Amazing Race," runs into the audience to kiss students at Corona del Mar High School on Friday.

CdM teacher brings TV-show contestants to school because he says the program helps teach geography appreciation.

By Michael Alexander
Updated: Friday, January 16, 2009 8:55 PM PST

Spanish-language teacher Nelson Rojas’ five classes at Corona del Mar High School were all screaming at an ear-splitting volume.

“Period Three!” one group yelled.

It was no wonder they were excited, as Rojas’ classes were filled with fans of CBS’s “The Amazing Race,” and four teams from the last two seasons of the show were 10 feet in front of them.

For the last few years, Rojas has taught the show in his classroom, using its many exotic locales to teach geography in Spanish. But the show has a positive message for students as well, Rojas said.

“I use it to teach geography and history, but also to get them to travel and be good ambassadors, especially in the times we live in nowadays,” he said. “In my class, I tell my kids, ‘I want you guys to study abroad, to spend a year somewhere — go anywhere.’”

But with some chance connections and effort, Rojas and students managed to get “Amazing Race” contestants to visit the school last year, and he topped the effort Friday.

In front of a crowd of nearly 300, eight of the show’s contestants answered audience questions and Rojas’ quizzing, mingled with the audience and talked about how travel has changed them.

“It’s made me the most thankful for what I have in my life,” said Aja Benton, who competed in the most recent season, the 13th. “Going to other places in the world, you realize how happy people can be with so little.”

Some of the event was less serious in tone: Benton’s boyfriend, Tyrone “Ty” White, talked about how painful it was to crush kiwi fruit with his feet, and contestant Mark Yturralde lightheartedly complained about his own hardest challenge.

“Definitely, it was wrestling at 15,000 feet, where there’s no oxygen at all, and you can’t breathe,” Yturralde said.

But Rojas’ message got through, as the guests talked about the importance of seeing the world and keeping an open mind.

For 12th-season competitor Jennifer “Vyxsin” Fiala, the biggest lesson of the show was that she should have paid attention in school.

“I would have taken foreign language a lot more seriously,” she said. “I would have picked one and learned it. It can only help you.”

Rojas said this year’s meet was doing exactly what it was supposed to: open minds.

“I make 180 ‘Amazing Race’ fans every year in my classes,” Rojas said. “They get the travel fever. Their experience in my class isn’t just about learning the words; it’s about learning other cultures.”

I taped the 2 hour Eyewitness news this Morning segment. I was mistaken. There was an interview of Jerry Bruckheimer(not Bertram Van Munster), who is touting his film "Confessions of a Shopaholic" starring Isla Fisher. There was nothing about the Amazing Race (and why would ABC be publicizing it, now that I think about it?). So, fuhgettaboutit.

04.16.2009 CBS PICKS UP "THE AMAZING RACE" FOR ITS 15TH SPRINT AROUND THE WORLD

Host Phil Keoghan is currently on a 40-day, 3,500 mile bike ride across America www.philridesacrossamerica.com, which ends in New York City on May 9, the day before the season finale of THE AMAZING RACE 14 on Sunday, May 10 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT).

Not necessarily Puddin.  Thats just what the media refers to has next season.  It could mean anything.  It could mean its not on the schedule (like season 12) and it will air whenever its needed.  Or it could mean they are given them the go ahead to really push the preproduction side of it and get it ready to film as soon as casting is finished.  This leaves them the option of being able to get one in the can for the fall (if they choose) and still allow them to green light a 2nd session either during May upfronts (where they will get a true sense of how the show performs minus the help of sports).

Oh and by the way where the hell did CBS pull those average numbers for because they aren't even close.

Its like they aren't counting the first two episode of the season.  Because as of this last Sunday our average is 10.380 million viewers a 3.1 in adults 18-49 and a 3.9 in adults 25-54.

The numbers they use match (when using only two decimal points, I have data to the third) if you only average episodes 3-8.  The 2d episode (against the oscars really hit hard).

CBS tweets 'Amazing Race' renewal
15th season announcement a first for web service

By Nellie Andreeva

April 16, 2009, 05:32 PM ET
CBS' "The Amazing Race" was picked up for a 15th cycle Thursday and made history as the first series whose renewal was announced on Twitter.

Using the micro-blogging service, "Race" host Phil Keoghan posted the following tweet Thursday: "Great news. Just got the call from the network. CBS has ordered another season of 'The Amazing Race.' "

Instead of confirming through the regular channels, CBS also opted to do so on Twitter, whose popularity among Hollywood types has exploded over the past few months.

"This just in: CBS has ordered another season of the Emmy-winning 'Amazing Race,' " CBS' tweet said. "Official announcement coming."

After breaking technological ground, the network did follow up with a traditional news release, offering more details on the pickup.

Casting for the 15th edition of "Race" is under way. Keoghan is on a 40-day, 3,500-mile bike ride across America, which ends in New York City on May 9, the day before the season finale of "Amazing Race 14." Along the way, he will appear at three of the open castings calls: Chicago (April 24), Pittsburgh (May 1) and New York (May 8).

Since its 2001 premiere, "Race" has won six consecutive Emmys for best reality competition series, taking home the trophy every year since the category was created.

15 Episodes.......thats a lot of episodes.....lol    Well  with 4 NEL legs, you could do it with 13 teams.....add in a double leg and then you would need 12 teams. Or 12 teams with 3 NELs and 2 double legs.

For the 15th Season, I think 15 episodes would be a gift for us. (They're making up for Season 12 and 13?? )..  Why not add it to 15 legs, and 15 teams and 15 countries to go to?  :funny:

But filiming 15 teams would be so much difficult to handle and watch though..

Cheers to CBS, WRP, the crew and staff of TAR, to The Amazing Race and to us viewers for making our beloved show reach Season 15!  :partie: :congrats: :werock: :yourock:

MsPeach, I think you have hit the proverbial nail, squarely on the head!!!!!

they have made mistakes in reports as well, in saying about "dropping non-elimination legs" which all of us thought it meant having zero when it actually meant reducing the pre-Season 12 number. n then the producers gave a stupid excuse later when another report mentioned the discrepancy.

I did not have a better place to put this, so I have it here. Tonight from 10pm to 11pm  Globetrekker will be featuring the Anderson Military Base at Yigo, Guam. I got as far as the eastern gate of Anderson when I toured Guam by public bus in April, 2008 but the curious tourists are not allowed in. For those of you who wanted to see more of the site where AR11 tasks in the Guam episode started, this is your chance. This is on PBS throughout New Jersey and may be shown elsewhere. It is the newest episode of Globetrekker, so look for it in your area if you are interested in this.

Here is some more Amazing Race news that combines with what's happening with other shows. One of the best new travel shows in "Dhani Jones Circles the Globe" NFL linebacker Jones, an engaging fellow, travels the world competing in athletic contests where professionals let just him join them. He has been to:

Muay Thai in Thailand,
Schwingen in Switzerland,
rugby in England,
dragon boating in Ssingapore,
jai alai in the Basque section of Spain,
hurling in Ireland,
and water rescue in Australia

The main reason to watch is not to see Dhani compete (you can do that by watching Cincinnati Bengals football games). It is the travelogue that takes up about half of each show.

What I find particularly interesting are the current episode's tributes to the Amazing Race. The water rescue task for Dave/Jeff in Queensland won them a FAST FORWARD. Dhani was in the Sydney area, but water rescue is identical there. Also, Dhani visited the Manly OceanWorld Aquarium just like Amazing Race Asia 1.

I highly recommend "Dhani Circles the globe." He still has some more places to visit before this show goes into
Travel Channel reruns (although each one is shown many times in the week it premiers).

I discovered some excellent PBS programs this afternoon that relaet to AR11. First was Travelscope where Joseph Rosendo, a decent travel show host, went to San Pedro de Atacama and other places nearby, finishing at the interesting geysers and hot springs of the Valley of the Moon.

Following it was Passport to Adventure, with even better travel hosts in Julie Conover and Mark Jennings. They went to Guam. I had seen this program before but it was still interesting to see the many different things that can be done on that island without being on any military base.

This was on channel 21, PBS from Long Island. If you get a chance I recommend that you take a look at these programs.

Well it is possible for them to do a typical season and call it 15 episodes.  They can do the standard 2 hour opening episode, and they could expand the final leg to two hours (instead of the typical two episodes shown in a two hour block).  It would be an extremely cost effective way of generating two additional hours of the show, with a very small increase in the production budget.  Or heck one of the hours could be a highlight episode (they have done it twice before).

'The Amazing Race': Is UCF's Miss America taking part?
posted by halboedeker on Sep 8, 2009 8:16:20 AM

Is Orlando native Ericka Dunlap -- Miss America 2004 -- on "The Amazing Race" this season?

That's the hot rumor on the Internet. CBS won't announce the cast until tomorrow.

Dunlap earned a degree in advertising and public relations from the University of Central Florida. She was the first African-American to win the Miss Florida title. (Dunlap is pictured enjoying her victory after being crowned Miss America in 2003.)

According to Internet buzz, Dunlap and her husband, Brian Kleinschmidt, are taking part in the CBS show.

The 15th edition of "The Amazing Race" will have a two-hour premiere at 8 p.m. Sept. 27.

President Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize wasn't the only surprise for me this morning. I got a Google Alert about a former reality contestant who, as it turns out, worked in casting for TAR at the time TAR won its first Emmy in 2003. He's now a local news anchor starting in Orlando this coming week. And this guy was quite likeable when he was on Big Brother 3 (in 2002). Jason Guy (link) (http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_tv_tvblog/2009/10/weshs-jason-guy-he-came-to-news-via-big-brother-reality-tv.html)

I wonder if his new station will let Jason interview Erika and Brian? It will be rare to have someone in the news media do a Racer interview who actually knows TAR first hand, even from the production side.

Fox Reality Channel shutting down
Network to end run in March after four years

Oct 14, 2009, 10:25 PM ET
Fox Reality Channel will cease operations next year.

Fox Networks Group told staffers Wednesday that the 4-year-old channel will end its run March 31.

The network aired a mix of acquired reality repeats such as "Temptation Island" and "Last Comic Standing" and some original reality content like "American Idol Extra."

The company has not yet announced what it will do with the channel, which is distributed to 50 million homes.

"With the changing cable landscape, we've made a strategic decision to shift some resources and refocus on emerging channels," the company said. "However, Fox Reality Channel will remain on our lineup for at least the next several months."

Fox Reality Channel shutting down
Network to end run in March after four years

EW TV Review: "The Amazing Race"
By: Dalton Ross - Entertainment Weekly
When "The Amazing Race" first came on the air back in 2001, it was with a mountain of hype behind it. Fresh off the success of "Survivor," the folks at CBS were sure they had their next exotic reality giant. Then the show had the misfortune of debuting right around the attacks on September 11, and a program about travel on airplanes suddenly wasn't the escapist entertainment fare viewers were looking for. The show was never officially canceled, but in those early years, you never quite new when it would come back on. The network tried it during summer, and they trotted it out whenever another show needed to be taken off the air.

"The Amazing Race" was on life support, and even die hard fans probably wanted it put out of its misery when they staged a truly unfortunate family edition. But a funny thing happened on the way to the ratings graveyard. Slowly, buzz began to build, ratings began to pickup, and here we are now in the show's 15th season. And the newest installment has everything that has made the program so popular, even if it took awhile. You have an often visually stunning spectacle with teams visiting places like Cambodia and the Persian Gulf and taking part in local culture and customs. You have quirky challenges that are sure to entertain by unnerving even the most common of couples. And you have colorful teams to root for and against.

This season, the heroes were Justin and his partner with Asberger's, Zev, who came in first place in one leg, only to lose one of their passports and therefore be eliminated. But equally likeable are Harlem Globetrotters Flight Time and Big Easy. Sure, they're probably there just to promote their basketball team, but so what? They're Globetrotters! On the flip side are the grating Lance and Keri. You always need a good pair of heels to root against, and they definitely fit the bill. The only bummer about this show is that it is almost impossible to DVR since football always makes it start and end late. But I shouldn’t complain. After the way things started back in 2001, I should just be happy that this race is still on.

Blake and TOMS have had a very good year. First the AT&T campaign that featured TOMS Shoes and Blake in the spring, and now CBS News.

It's ironic that FOX overtook his bid to start a reality programming channel, and now FRC is going off the air in a few months. In the meantime, he starts a shoe business with a unique business plan, and it seems to be working.

He's doing more good with TOMS than he ever would with a reality channel.

I can see TAR beating all the others (it has swept all the Emmys for outstanding reality competition) except for Colbert Report. Colbert's pretty awesome.

What if it was Survivor:Canada instead of BB:Canada and Michael was forced to live in an igloo for a month? That might be worth it, eh?

God willing, Jimmy Fallon.  Or Anderson Cooper.  Yeah, that's wishful thinking.  Maybe Chip could start up a show and he could have racers show up there.  Then we have Regis, but typically, this is reserved for the winners.

Sad to see the show go.  Fortunately, it looks like it'll make it through next season as a whole.  Hopefully, TES will pick it back up next year, but again that's wishful thinking.

Some interesting comments from Nina Tassler, President of CBS Entertainment, as reported by Andy Denhart (link)
Quote
CBS' entertainment president Nina Tassler said Saturday she's "high on" both Undercover Boss, which will be launch after the Super Bowl, and the 20th season of Survivor. She also praised the network's other reality series, though she didn't mention Welcome to the Neighborhood.
Quote
She also had praise for The Amazing Race, and said that the show will continue "as long as it continues to perform. … We had a great season this year, in particular. Bertram [Van Munster, the executive producer and co-creator,] is a magician." She said that they "have never been a complacent production. They are always looking for new challenges."
Quote
Tassler also said "the beauty of having a reality show like Race, like Survivor like Big Brother, these brands that continue to succeed, is because each cycle, when you go into the casting process, you really get an opportunity to almost reinvent yourself. So the combination of great casting, with Bertram finding wonderful, unique and unusual routes, I think just contributes to the longevity of the show."

In other words, expect these shows to stick around for at least a few more seasons.
