 Leg 1

Los Angeles, LAX/ Chicago, ORD 4/22/08
peachs brings us a blog entry (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.msg298477.html#msg298477)
dated 4/22/08:
*"This time, as we were waiting for the team to get checked in at the airport, we got a glimpse of what appeared to be some competitors on The Amazing Race.
*I saw a camera crew shooting two blondes wearing hot pink sweatsuits as they quickly walked outside the terminal. Hmmm, don't think we've ever seen THAT kind of team before on the show (says she with heavy sarcasm).
*A few minutes later, we caught a glimpse of two more pairs

peach contacts the writer (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.0.html) of the blog and brings us more details:
*She saw the teams on 4/22  at about 11 AM outside the Delta terminal 5. Looking from inside the terminal out, the teams would have been moving to the right.

Chateau d if does some amazing detective (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.msg298534.html#msg298534) work by visiting LAX and gets details:
* The gal said there was one team that was 'hippie' like with long white hair (she demonstrated with her hands at mid chest level).
*They were an older couple, as in, male and female.  She estimated their ages to be 40's or 50's.  She also mentioned the two girls and another team that was just a regular young couple in their 20's.
*I just point blank asked "Where were they flying to?"  And he said "Brazil.     Sao Paulo, Brazil"
*He also confirmed the Hippie couple.  They are old enough to be originals from the 60's.
*He said there were 5 teams going via UA and 6 teams via AA.
*So there you have it:   11 teams of two.  Off to their first destination in Sao Paulo.

Thanks to Kogs, do we have our first contestant sighting? (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15372.0.html) -- picture credit flickr ChristiaanV

peach contacts ChristiaanV (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.msg299128.html#msg299128) , he kindly shares more details.
*We saw The Hippies, we saw the Blondes in Pink, and we saw what we would describe as two 23-26 year old "Slacker Dudes"
*This guy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vandenheuvel/2436594800/) was with... what we were guessing his mom (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15372.msg300009.html#msg300009)

Rio De Janeiro International Airport 4/23/08

Some new info here: (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.msg301587.html#msg301587)

*From Cordoba, we were to have a stop over in Porto Alegre another stop in Sao Paulo and then arrive in Salvador in the afternoon. Because of fog, the airport in Porto Alegre was closed, so we had to detour to Rio and from there, fly to Salvador, which was actually much more efficient and convenient.
*At the airport in Rio, we noticed several film crews and people in teams of two, often wearing matching outfits.
*These two girls from Texas (according to their t-shirts anyway) were wearing matching black biker shorts, bright pink tank tops and a ton of make-up. I think the t-shirt was pretty accurate.
*Anyway, we noticed them being interviewed by the film crews, acting out dramatic situations and so-on.
*When it came time to board we talked to some of them and lent one of them our brazil book, although they didn..t give us many details about what they were doing.
*There was a delay in taking off and one team asked if they could move closer to the front.
*As soon as they did, all the other contestants tried to do the same.
*It was kind of annoying becuase I think it delayed our take-off even more. Anyway, at that point, we were pretty confident that if it wasn..t The Amazing Race, it was an amazing race of some sort.

:jumpy:  Looks like the picasa pictures of the cluebox in Brazil are actually near the Sao Francisco Church along Ladeira de Carmo in Salvador (Bahia) Brazil.

Note baroque blue/white building in background with fancy pointy things on roof.  Cluebox is to the left of the church front (not seen very well in pictures).

Edited to Add:
A Igreja de São Francisco (The Church of Saint Francis) and its attached convent are up the cobbled streets and to the left at the far side of the Terreio de Jesus, standing at the end of an adjacent square (Praça Anchieta), beyond a large stone cross.

I noticed that in Matt's shots there are pieces of Yellow and Red tape laid out in a line at the steps of San Francisco Church, just inside the gate.

I suspect this is where teams must wait/sleep until morning.   :snicker:

Opps, not San Francisco Church, Thanks Boingo, (I was just being sloppy):  Igreja Do Santissimo Sacramento Do Passo

Not to mention that you already saw it.  But I didn't know what you were talking about  :groan:

In the Salvador shots of the Matt picture set there is a Whiteboard reference to 19BC.  And 19 BC is shown on a building that he has shots of.

Turns out that 19 BC is military base:  2° Companhia do 19° Batalhão de caçadores Operacionais (You Tube Link here (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Dydyr2FTvY8&feature=related))

And if you watch the video you will see the Badge for the 19° BC.  That same Badge appears on the sticker that Mr. Purple Shirt wears.  But in the sticker it is in conjunction with Film Planet Group (http://www.filmplanet.com/site_en.htm).  They boast about doing work for TAR before (Season 9).

I think in, sum and substance, 19 BC will turn out to be nothing more than just a dormitory for production.

:jumpy:  Finally found this one..... Matt is standing in the Praca Municipal do Salvador near the Palacio Rio Branco and the Elevador Lacerda (to his right).  That's the Banco Bradesco branch to his left.

:snicker:  Just cleaning up a few things... no new spoilers here...   :carryon:

Found location of Matt's Escadaria do Paço sign pix.  No surprise, they were taken just a stones throw from Igreja Do Santissimo Sacramento Do Passo (church with stairs and drummers) in Pelourinho area.

Photo labeled "Palourinho-Ladeira_do_Carmo" is view of same street from the opposite end (looking uphill).

heres a view of the street from the opposite direction...looks like they normally have street vendors there...

(http://i34.[banned image hosting site].com/vsn8z9.jpg)
  Close, but not quite.  This big "C" sign is on Rua Portugal (very near the sandwich shop) but Terence & Sarah appear to be on a narrower street.

Oh wait, this may be another sign on the same building but on the side facing the highrise buildings.  :yess:

It looks like these two have already signed up for their transport/time.  They are now headed to the trucks that will take them into the jungle.

I looks like teams will be divided into three groups (3 trucks).

well this is what tvguide has to say

Episode Detail: - Amazing Race 13
The race begins with 11 teams departing the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and flying to Salvador, Brazil, where they must either climb up a large stone staircase on their hands and knees or climb down a 240-foot cargo net. The first pit stop is Forte São Marcelo and the last team to arrive is eliminated.

Thanks, Puddin. Since it's unlikely that teams would get excited over the sign-in sheet then dash to the fort, it's time to grab the shoehorn and revisit the timeline thread.

I'm thinking that crawling up those stairs on hands and knees (if only once, of course) could actually turn out to be much faster than the Elevador--what with getting harnessed, safety briefing and all.

But not nearly as much fun!! :)

Boingo--thanks for the walking tour! I feel like I am right there...

...

:snicker:  so the Detours are the Elevador Lacerda and the church steps.  Depending on where they are coming from, the steps may be tough to find, as the church is well hidden among the narrow and twisty streets of the Pelourinho.  The Lacerda may be quicker to find.

Until more info comes in, I'll vote for the church steps as a Roadblock, with the Detour being climb the rope/push the candy. Speaking of which...

I was looking into the photo below, and, fwiw, the carts are used mainly for coffee--"cafezinho" (explanation at the bottom of this page (http://www.bahia-online.net/DrinkinginSalvador.htm)). Some of the cafezinho "carrinhos" can be quite elaborate (http://www.flickr.com/photos/por_minha_lente/373330379/sizes/l/), others...not so much (http://www.flickr.com/photos/capitu/2258669121/). :js:  :food: (no coffee smiley)

I have to go with the roadblock being to push the candy. In the clip of Terrence and Sarah, he seems to be doing most of the work, shes just taging along with the local. I can see the detour being a "climb up" or "climb down" type of thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the candy task is one of those Additional Tasks and not the Roadblock OR Detour since it doesn't seem relevant to the net climb nor does it really fit into what a conventional Roadblock tends to be like.

The Detour would, as what North suggested, be probably the climbing down of the net or the climbing up of the stairs, pictured above.

The Roadblock I'm not too sure, and there might or might not even be a Roadblock, given past seasons' (except TAR1 & 12) which have had no Roadblocks.

Anyway, we have one pic of either Marissa or Brooke being rather upset and in tears, kinda, in a boat-ish/beach-ish kinda place. Could that be the RB?

:snicker:  I have to agree, the "candy/Changai Sandwich/Fenicular/Se Square/small dixie cups vending" is probably just a "busy" task to get next clue.  Leg 1 tends to devote time to get to know the teams (during the mandatory rest stop - BC 19).  Roadblock is usually optional in this leg.   :duno:

I tend to agree it see no signs of a roadblock for leg 1

the pics of the pinkies crying are for leg 2 discussed here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,16735.msg341220.html#msg341220) and being put together here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15483.msg303384.html#msg303384). I think its pretty assured that the candy task is a extra task...The teams clue that they get by the candy sellers is a Route Marker clue!!!! not a roadblock...and in the photo of Terance and Sarah with the candy, Sarah has a Route Marker Clue in hand!!

THE 13TH INSTALLMENT OF CBS'S FIVE-TIME EMMY AWARD-WINNING REALITY SERIES, "THE AMAZING RACE," RETURNS WITH AN ALL NEW SEASON OF FIRSTS ON SUNDAY, SEPT. 28

(http://i34.[banned image hosting site].com/2epm54o.jpg)

"Bees are Much Calmer than All This!" — Eleven new teams depart from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, embarking on a Race around the world, on THE AMAZING RACE 13, premiering Sunday, Sept. 28 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  THE AMAZING RACE has won five consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Competition Program.  Phil Keoghan is the host.

The 13th installment of THE AMAZING RACE will feature a variety of firsts, including: Teams traveling to a real-life water world where its inhabitants live upon a floating city; first time visits for the Race to locations such as Cambodia and Kazakhstan; and one Team makes an unprecedented mistake on the road that ultimately prohibits them from joining their fellow Racers at the finish line.

The Race begins in Los Angeles as Teams immediately begin jockeying for flights to their first location, Salvador, Brazil, where their stamina and courage are immediately put to the test during a harrowing Detour.

Do Anita & Arthur (the beekeepers) say the phrase?  The team that says the quote of the episode usually (I'm not certain if it's always) stays in the competition?

In any case, I'd probably do the cargo net if I was on the Amazing Race.  It'd be a whole lot easier (in my eyes) than going up those church steps on my hands and knees.

Interesting to note that TV Guide for Next Week Sept 29 - Oct. 5 has a pretty complete description of the events of Ep 1.  Seems that one of their reporters accompanied the teams from Los Angeles to Salvador, Bahia and gives a good description of the two DETOUR tasks.  Included in his description is the "secret" that once the teams climb up the cathedral steps on their knees they must answer the question "how many steps did you climb" (correct answer 53) before they get the directions to the first pit stop.(Picture included)  The other task is, as we know, is climbing down the cargo net (picture included). He also describes how the teams must camp out one night with bugs, bugs, bugs interrupting their sleep.  He does not say when this happens, so maybe the teams must camp out in the wilderness overnight after arriving from Rio before they can do the tasks the next day.  This probably is the case considering the times need for travel and has been a staple of most TARs during the first ep.

Here's hoping Puddin can lift the entire article and reprint it here.

Thanks for the details Gman! So Chateau's spec that they camp over night via 19 BC looks right on!

Remember this?  Mosquito nets, repellent, chainsaw, ....

I suspect they will be camping out in the jungle behind the 19 BC compound.  Here is what they do at 19 BC YouTube (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Dydyr2FTvY8&feature=related)

Brazil Nut
Our reporter  runs wild in South america on the first leg of the Amazing Race
by Craig Tomashoff

It seemed like a good idea at the time: Run a leg of the amazing race to see if I’ve been justified all these years yelling at the screen telling the teams of the cbs’s Emmy winning, continent-hopping reality show how every move they make is a stupid one.
I happily volunteered to take a run at the first leg of season 13, Bertram Van Minster and Elise Doganieri promised that from the very first minute, “its going to be demanding.. People are going to be very tired and cranky.” Going on vacation with 2 kids under the age of 7 is tough, and I’ve done that. Anything else has to be a breeze.
I meet 11 teams at the starting line inside Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where they’re honing their strategies to snag $1 million prize. Fraternity brothers Andrew and Dan hope to lure in attractive women, lulling the competition into “a false sense of trust that gives us the power when the time is right.” Married-but separated Ken & Tina want to keep their special skills ---secret ---especially the survival strategies Tina picked up while stranded on a South Pacific island after a hurricane. Comic book—loving best friends Mark and Bill try to lower expectations, admitting that while some think the race looks easy on TV, “this will take amazingly longer than it seems.”

They’re right. This journey of 33,000 miles doesn’t begin with a single step. It starts with a seat on the plane – coach class—for much of the next 24 hours. It could be worse :I could be six-foot-plus Ty (racing with girlfriend Aja), who can’t fold up enough to fit in his space. Finally we touch down on Salvador, Brazil. As the arriving teams negotiate cab rides into the city to look for their first clue. I take advantage of my gate- crasher status and head straight for the legs first significant Detour challenge, in which teams choose one of two options. Option 1: Climb down a 240-fiit-high rope ladder strung from the top of Salvador’s famous Elevator Lacerda. I ride to the top.

Stepping onto the ladder, I treat it like I do when I give blood: Close my eyes and it’ll be fine . I’m able to stick to that for all of five minutes before peeking to see how much further I have to go. Bad idea –I’m not even halfway down. By the time I reach pavement 20 minutes later, it appears to the locals as though I’m so happy to be done that I kneel to kiss the ground. The truth, however ,is that my legs have the consistency of grape jelly and I can’t walk.
Next I drag myself across town to the other detour option: Climb the stone steps of the 18th-century church on your knees then answer the mystery question. Teams who complete these challenges go onto the pitstop.
I channel my inner toddler and crawl right up, even though the knees get so banged up I feel like an NFL quarterback. At the top, the leader of the Brazilian drum band serenading the teams asks “ How many steps did you just climb?” I pause for a few seconds , trying to make it look good. Then I correctly announce “53!” (OK, so earlier in the day I’d sneaked a peek at the producers hand book and saw the question and the answer).

Maybe it is the bit of deception or the thrill of the rope climb, but I am even more certain I’d been justified in mocking all 11 race teams that have come before me, right up to the moment I meet up with them at their campsite in a bug infested, muddy patch of jungle inside a military base. Everybody has his limits. Many of mine involve insect encounters.
Several of the men, like Dallas (running with mom, Toni) and Nick (with his sister, Starr), wander around among the bugs, shirtless and fearless. Texan divorcees/best friends Kelly & Christy brag about the huge tarantula they’ve squashed with a shoe. Comic- book guy Mark is already convinced he’ll never again think the race is too easy.
Neither will I. Maybe if I were really in the hunt for the $1 million, I’d slip into the mosquito for the night, too. But I’m not, so instead I slink off to the air-conditioned hotel comfort of a Salvador hotel, vowing never to disparage any race teams efforts again.
Still, I don’t want to end my time on the road as a total wimp. I push myself to tough out one last challenge that’s really more speed: It turns out the hotel bar doesn’t have Chianti. So I settle for Merlot.

The sound of excitement!
The Amazing Race is nowhere near as thrilling as its score
Dean Robbins on Friday 09/26/2008

The soundtrack makes us think we're having fun.
The new season of The Amazing Race (Sunday, 7 p.m., CBS) begins with edge-of-the-seat excitement. Eleven pairs gather in Los Angeles to kick off the race around the world. The host reveals their first destination — Brazil — and they're off! Accompanied by a soundtrack of deafening drums and screeching brass, the pairs jump in their cars and speed off to the airport! But they're slowed by L.A. traffic! And the airline ticket lines are excruciatingly long! Then they endure the endless flight to Brazil as the soundtrack reaches a fever pitch!

Hold on. In reality, there's nothing very exciting about inching forward in traffic, waiting in line and taking a long intercontinental flight. The deafening drums and screeching brass just make us think it's exciting. With that kind of soundtrack, I bet even this blurb would be a heart-pounding thrill ride.

That's odd ??? ...Given the time (late Tuesday morning) and route provided by Chateau, traffic shouldn't have been a problem. Maybe a few minutes are wasted searching for onramps/offramps/ParkOne, but that's about it. Caltrans doesn't have an archive function the way Seattle does, so I can't tell if there was an accident that day.

THE AMAZING RACE

CBS, 8pm et/pt (Sunday, Sept. 28)

By Susan Stewart

The real American pastime is competition. That’s why The Amazing Race is such an amazing show.
Race is emotionally engaging in a way that single skill-based reality shows like Project Runway and even American Idol can’t be. Race requires fitness, sure, but mostly it requires heart, persistence and teamwork.

Except for the cheating – always a highlight – this is a race, in the end, about character

Season 13’s first episode takes its 11 two-person teams from Los Angeles to Brazil in the usual tearing hurry. Along the way, a few teams make early impressions.

Chubby frat brothers Andrew and Dan (dumb and dumber?) are comic relief, especially when forced to climb 53 stone steps on all fours – twice. Ditto self-styled “southern belles” Marisa and Brooke. “We’re very classy,” Brooke says. Then she proves it, exclaiming, “I am about to pee in my pants!” when faced with a challenge.
So far, so good.

I mean there are several pluses.

1.  One I can screw with Michael...
2.  Two I go out, being a winner.
3.  Three, refer to option 1.

I stated about one month ago that I would decide who I am rooting for in AR13(not just epiisode 1 but the whole race). Unlike Michael, my record of wins is not zero (I got Uchenna and Joyce and BJ and Tyler right out of 12 races), so i will not be jinxing them by picking them. My choice is Nick and Starr Spangler. The are tough, fast, agile, and young. They make mistakes but should be able to recover to avoid elimination.

My record of wins from favorite teams isn't zero -- I definitely picked Chip & Kim and Uchenna & Joyce as my favorite teams from their respective editions and may have picked the Linz Family from the Family Edition -- and my favorite team this time is Kelly & Christy.  I want an all-female team to win and this team has a better chance than Marissa & Brooke!

Kate O'Hare's Hot Cuppa TV

Kate O'Hare live blogs her advance copy!

LOTS of spoilers! :ascared  (I'm kinda surprised they let this much out pre-show...but who am I to complain? :lol3:)

Quote
We begin with, as ever, with America's favorite Kiwi, the lovely and talented Phil Keoghan (that man can rock a sweater -- or in this case, a snazzy black jacket -- like nobody's bidness).

Phil's on a skyscraper rooftop in Los Angeles. Wonder what the mortgage is on that thing. Phil's rockin' the brown leather; the contestants are motoring in classic cars to the L.A. Coliseum.

And here we go:

Mother and son Toni and Dallas, who are not from Dallas, but instead from Woodside, Calif. (Maybe if they were from Dallas, she'd have named him Fresno.) They make sammiches together.

Siblings Nick (actor) and Starr (cheerleader) from New York and Texas. Gosh, they're perky -- and they always get what they want. Could they then want a huge government housing bailout for Galveston? Even the Kuwait Times is concerned.

Separated Ken (ex-NFL, ex-cheater) and Tina, from Tampa, Fla., and San Diego, Calif.

Long-distance sweethearts Aja and Ty, from Los Angeles and Southfield, Mich. How will they deal with constant togetherness?

Pink-as-all-get-out Southern Belles Marisa and Brooke from Columbia, S.C. The gal pals are "very classy," and make cupcakes.

Phoenix frat brothers Andrew and Dan, grippin' those red plastic cups and eyein' the honeys.

Daters Stephanie and Anthony from Los Angeles. He's a mortgage broker. Boy, if he didn't win this, bet he's cranky now. She wants a ring. Good luck in this housing market.

Tie-dyed, hirsute-but-cute married beekeepers Anita and Arthur from Fall Creek, Oregon. The shirts are OK, but that Michael Jackson cap's an iffy choice, there, Art. Art chops wood; they have black-and-white dogs.

Blue-on-blue Kelly and Christy, Texas pals helping each other through bad breakups. They're both just 26.

Freshly minted daters Terence and Sarah from New York. She works on Wall Street. Yeepers. He's a faux-hawked free spirit, she's bespectacled and works her butt off.

San Diego comic-book geek pals Mark and Bill. Mark is the CFO of San Diego Comic-Con International. Don't forget to book now for 2009! Seriously. Do it. They play chess.

I think there should be some Vegas odds-makers working out whether people who dress alike win more often than those who don't. Just a suggestion.

You're going around the world -- but first you must run to the parking lot and try not to get lost on the way to LAX. (Hmmm, Coliseum,110 to the 10 to the 405, or the 110 to the 105? Number two would be my choice. Trust me, after getting to LAX from downtown, getting to Brazil will be the easy part.)

Oooh, Terence is taking surface streets. He's a native.

Hah, exit to the 105! I was right.

Just so you know, I don't plan to liveblog the boring highway and airport stuff (honestly, I've been known to fast-forward it all, and I may again). We'll catch up with our intrepid travelers in Brazil.

Brasilia! Take a taxi through Salvador, find a sandwich shop. Pretty airport, nice new taxis. Go, Brazil! No, cheated-on Tina, they don't speak Spanish in Brazil. Portuguese, my dear. Bet the tax driver heard that and now will go the long way.

Pretty city, but no sandwiches, just a clue for the geeks, who are wearing disturbing shades of orange. "Become a barista, old-school style." What is this, some kind of proto-Starbucks? Oh, you get to be a tippy cart vendor, which the geeks master in "a split second."

More with the Texas divorces and the matchy-matchy. Ooh, somebody speaks Portuguese? No, I'm not referring to Tina saying, "Yikey, schmikey." Oh, the carts are so cute, they have tiny big rigs on the front of them, so it's sort of like Cobblestone Street Truckers. Somebody wins and has a very good accent.

Starr gives huggies to the guy at the finish. Very nice, Starr. but Sarah plants one on the hot soldier.

Divorcees are confused. Mom and son are in red and lack sleeves. The frat guys and the beekeepers are stuffed in cabs. Pink Belles are worried about being in an unfamiliar airport in a foreign country. Um, what part of the briefing did you miss?

Stephanie of the L.A. Daters voices over about wanting money to get married and have kids. Did I mention that Anthony's a mortgage broker?

Baristas, round two, much like round one.

Baristas round three, mother and son lose it in the street. The frat guys don't hug the guy who gives the clue. He looks glad about that.

Go, go, go! Go, go, go! (Yeah, that always makes them go faster. Works about as well as "Stop, thief!")

Time for a nighttime picnic in the woods, and one of the girls starts macking on Dallas. Sarah yakks up the other teams, making Terence feel all alone. Poor Terence.

A bug! Dirty shoes! Eyebrow pencil!

More taxis, to a pretty church in a pretty square. There are places I may never want to visit after seeing them on this show, but so far Brazil is not one of them.

"You said go a million times." State the obvious, much?

Sarah regrets making the nice with Nick and Starr. Terence is antisocial. Poor Terence. Poor Sarah. Terence whines because Sarah runs faster. Did I mention that, along with being a faux-hawked free spirit, Terence is a running coach? Way to advertise the old fitness, there, Terence. Be nice, dude, she speaks Portuguese.

Pilgrimage up stairs on your knees, or climb 240 feet down a cargo net from an outdoor elevator. You decide.

Oops, Terence and Sarah. Down is popular for the moment. For heaven's sake, don't stand under the net without an umbrella, that's all I have to say.

Terence and Sarah start over. They're "spazzing." How do you say "no kidding" in Portuguese?

Pit stop at the battlement -- no pirates allowed.

They're at the docks! They go to the docks in reality shows, too. Can a warehouse be far behind?

Phil welcomes team number one, and they win a romantic trip. Not sure if a romantic trip is appropriate here. Hi, Travelocity gnome! (I held one at "Amazing Race" HQ. Pretty cute -- and kinda heavy.)

Sarah shows off that fancy accent again.

The second wave arrives -- and down is still more popular...except with the frat boys.

Geeks rejoice; frats climb;, drummers drumming; watchers watching, Spider-women descending; drummers drumming; climbing, ripping, drumming; Pinks may pee; drumming; happy mom; sad frats.

Beekeepers hold hands. Sweet.

Frats go for two; Phil makes blues happy; down, down, don't look down; long silver hair blowin' in the wind; more drumming, more ripping, more beekeeper love; Pinks didn't pee; it's an elimination round!

Up, kiss, down, drum, up...how many? Yes!

Applause! Slurp, run, taxi; puzzled Pinks realize this isn't America (again, what part of the briefing did you miss?). Back to the docks; Phil double-teams it.

Trudge; cross; cross the water; run, trudge; tired but happy.

We're here! But, you've been Philiminated! Phil has the sad face on, but it's OK. Awww.

Next week...geeks want charity, and an alliance goes pear-shaped. "They didn't even say hi to us!"

Phil welcomes team number one, and they win a romantic trip. Not sure if a romantic trip is appropriate here. Hi, Travelocity gnome! (I held one at "Amazing Race" HQ. Pretty cute -- and kinda heavy.)

I'll take Dan and Andrew for the win, this to from their reactions arriving at the pitstop :word:

F/F
Mom/son
Fighting couple
Geeks
Frats
Bro/Sis

Heee...take your pic!

And hopefully by macking she only meant flirting! :funny:

Puddin, I don't think the Frats come in first based on that thing peach posted, see, if it's written in any form of chronological order:

Sarah shows off that fancy accent again.

The second wave arrives -- and down is still more popular...except with the frat boys.

Geeks rejoice; frats climb;, drummers drumming; watchers watching, Spider-women descending; drummers drumming; climbing, ripping, drumming; Pinks may pee; drumming; happy mom; sad frats.

Beekeepers hold hands. Sweet.

next day church in the square

Oooh, Terence is taking surface streets. He's a native.
It's true that Terence knows the area (see the first sentence here (http://www.run2three.com/who.html)), but unless the freeways were jammed solid I'd question that choice. Both Google and Maquest provided the same street route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Los+Angeles+Coliseum&daddr=lax&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&dirflg=h&sll=33.96935,-118.344025&sspn=0.164859,0.362549&ie=UTF8&ll=33.958045,-118.39026&spn=0.010305,0.022659&t=h&z=16): west on MLK, through Baldwin Hills and down La Cienega. Personally, I'd hang a right at Pann's and use La Tijera, making it a little easier to return the provided car, but...it may work out for him (I'll know tomorrow ).

Put a pushpin where you want. Give it a name and add description, links, etc. to your liking. Once you see it in your "Places" on the left side of GE, right-click the entry and choose "save place as." Save the kmz to a convenient place and attach it just like any photo (thanks to Rob for making that possible).

Well there it is, Anita and Arthur interview .........

The Joneses plan to watch at home tonight with their children and grandchildren. Even if they only last one episode, even if they didn’t come in first or make the final three-team episode, the couple says they won just by participating. And they say they would do it all over again given the chance.
“It was the most fun we’ve ever had standing up,” Arthur Jones says.

Nope, Banzai, it was a 18 hour pitstop and Aja and Ty made that pitstop at 1105am, totally consistent with them being well behind Nick/Starr at 1007am checkin and 407am release, respectively. 18 hours later for the Aja/Ty release is 505am. Tell me what is wrong with that.

Now it can be told.

I went along, as a journalist, on the first leg of this season's Amazing Race. This is the show's 13th season -- and I admit, I'm a latecomer to Race fever. But having watched a few iterations before pitching the editor-in-chief of CBS' Watch! magazine on covering the behind-the-scenes of the show, I became an instant fan.
