Ah Peach. Unfortunately she took herself out in Hong Kong. I liked her and Mary.

SHAMOKIN – One of the most exciting parts of the Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts is ready for another edition as teams will race around Shamokin and Coal Township during the third annual Amazing Coal Cracker Race, set to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25.

The race, a test of physical and mental skills, will begin at the intersection of Market and Spruce streets and procede throughout Shamokin and Coal Township. Organized by Peach Krebs, a contestant on the second season of CBS’s “The Amazing Race,” and her sister Mary Lenig, the race is expected to be a little tougher than last year.

“We have found that there have been some people that find ways to be a bit quicker than others, so I’m working hard to see that there is no one that has an edge,” Krebs says. “This year’s race will be more mental than physical at times.”

While volunteers will help Krebs at the different locations along the route of race, Krebs has been doing all of the research for the clues.

“I will go around to check out the places with the hat and the sunglasses on and hope that no one recognizes me or that someone is peeking at all the books that I have draped on the table thinking they could get a hint,” she said.

“I’m not trying to make it that difficult that no one can finish the race, just challenging enough that everyone will enjoy it.”

While most of the winners have been younger, Krebs hopes that families and people of all ages will come and take part in the race, even for the sheer enjoyment of it.

“We are going to have some clues that someone is going to have to find a specific person, not just a place,” she says. “Some of the clues are actually easier than what racers will make them out to be.”

If it seems too tough for them, a special help line will be available for hints.

However, there will be a penalty, as the call will add 15 minutes to the racer’s time.

In addition, the race must be either run or walked, with no wheeled transportation at all, or contestants will be disqualified.

“We are still looking for volunteers to man a few of these stops, and we have spots available for 20 racing teams of two to four members,” Krebs said. “Entry fees are $20 per person, with kids under 10 participating for free.”

The first-place winners will receive $500 in cash, while those that finish second will receive commemorative T-shirts. All profits from the race will go to Boy Scout Troop 250.

“The troop is one of only about six or seven members, but they are the ones that work on bringing out the Paxinos Cross every year at Easter. It’s something that just inspired me when I met them and wanted to help them anyway I could.”

The race is being sponsored by Peach and Co. Salon, KAV Consulting of Paxinos, Scot’s Lo-Cost and Athletics Etc.

Advance sign-ups for the race can be made by calling Peach and Co. Salon at xxxxxxx.

If all 20 spots are not filled by the day of the race, teams can sign up at Market and Spruce streets from 9 a.m. until the start of the race.
