Title: TAR IN HD?
Post by: Kogs on April 13, 2008, 09:51:47 PM
This was at the end of the artical about survivor

CBS has not announced plans to upgrade their other reality travelogue, "The Amazing Race." But the higher-rated "Survivor" going HD should be an encouraging sign for "Race" fans.

if survivor17 comes out good in hd tar14 should be in hd

I've said this before and will repeat it for those who missed it the first time. The need for speed and agility in the camera to be able to move with the Amazing Race action pretty much requires a lighter weight camera, which is the opposite of HD. The fact that Survivor is going that way means nothing since Survivor cameramen don't have to move all over the globe; they just have to handle a small island somewhere where more fixed camera setups are possible.

I was going to say something similar like that as ap, but in a different manner. HD cameras right now weigh in the neighborhood of 7 tons so it would be difficult for the video photographers to carry them around especially in the sometimes small spaces that TAR visits.

Perhaps when we reach TAR 20, we'll see it in HD.

I've found a quote which details his (BVM) preference for large cameras (source (http://www.allbusiness.com/crime-law/criminal-offenses-misc-espionage/6273594-1.html); click to page 2):
Quote
While the equipment is getting less intrusive, not everyone swears by small cameras. Bertram van Munster, co-creator and co-executive producer of Amazing Race , says the camera needs a certain degree of heft in order to feel right on the shoulder and allow the photographer to get a quality shot. “You can't do professional stuff with a tiny little camera,” he insists. Van Munster swears by a 12-pound Sony IMX camcorder. With a smaller camera, he says, “it's hard to do things like pan properly.”
The article is from 2005, however. His opinions may have changed since then; technology certainly has changed.

I can't speak to the quality but sony has several HD video camera's that are between 10-15 lbs.  Another factor might simply be the start up cost of buying the new equipment.

But I would love to see Ar in HD, absolutely love it.

I can't verify the accuracy of this article or whether it is just wishful thinking, but here's a paragraph claiming that AR13 was filmed in HD

Quote
The Amazing Race will have two editions for the 2008-09 season (yes!). Similarly, Survivor will air the 17th edition -- Gabon-Earth's Last Eden -- in the fall, and the 18th in the spring. Both will be in HD for the first time.

(Can be found about a 3rd of the way down the page under other notes)

I interpreted that also to mean that  both Survivor's would be in HD.

We have an article around here somewhere which specifically says TAR will NOT be in HD....

tar wont go HD until the durability of the camera's are tested. Survivor is guining pigging for tarr, and another problem tar has is the production companys they use may not have hd ready yet around the world.

Yeah, the HD cameras are a bit bulky for TAR's purposes. Perhaps in the next couple of years when the technology gets better.

I'm a little lost; doesn't TAR: Asia promote their HD equipment all the time?

Asian HD is a different standard than US HD. It gets complicated so I won't bother to get into it.

The most recent TAR was shot and will air in SD.

As far as camera weight is concerned,  A Panasonic (Standard Def.) SDX 900 body weighs 8.6lbs compared to its HD Version, the HDX 900 at 9.9lbs.

Sony’s (Standard Def.) PDW-530 weights 9lbs, compared to the HD Version, PDW-355 at 8.6lbs.

These are 4 of the most common cameras used in Reality TV.  Weight is not an issue.

Thanks and :welcome2: to RFF, mike7997!

Is it cost then? ???

I always thought it was to save the poor cameraguys backs--but guess not?

Basically, nearly all technical costs could easily double.  And destroying an HD camera lens at $30,000 each - ouch!

Ouch is right! Wasn't it the ATC's who got in trouble for knocking a camera into the canal while punting?

Could get expensive!

Thanks for the info! :waves:

:groan:  BVM better wake up.... all I know is, if Cash Cab can give us HD with "lipstick" cameras, then TAR HD should be a cakewalk.   (:;)     :meow:   :'(

OK, rant over... time for the "dancing muffin"   :sucks

Yeah the fact that a show that has such vivid imagery of the world isn't shown in HD kill me.  But the start up cost in just the cameras one for each team, plus the extra ones at teh Pit Stop are going to be a huge hit for the budget of the show.

Eventually, it will happen, but not in the next two seasons.

CBS has added a TAR clip (http://www.cbs.com/hd/video.php?pid=94e9ZaScYdmsnhRMb92WA4ixsSRCb6Em&play=true&offset=0&show=all) to its HD gallery (the website claims it's 720p HD). Just one clip from India; the playback was a bit jerky for me, even with broadband. I'm not sure how this is managed, considering the source is only SD.
