Title: Congrats TAR! Emmy number 6!
Post by: georgiapeach on February 27, 2008, 10:01:12 AM
The Emmy's are adding a Best Reality Show Host?

 :wohoo: Go Phil!

Quote
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will honor the best reality show host at the Emmys, according to a report.
They will “add a category for reality TV host to its upcoming awards,” Variety reports, as the idea “was introduced at the recent retreat of the TV Academy board of governors and, according to sources, has already been tentatively approved, pending a final vote at the next board meeting in mid-March.”

Tvguide has released its poll results of which hosts deserves an emmy win.

and of course Jeff won (the asshat).  But Phil was very close a over 2% difference in votes.

Phil Keoghan, 'The Amazing Race'    :hearts:
By Christy Grosz
June 11, 2008

PHIL KEOGHAN puts so much time, effort and perspiration into the five-time Emmy-winning CBS series that he could easily appear to be a contestant.

Sleep deprivation notwithstanding, Keoghan says the challenges of working on such a fast-paced show invigorate him. " 'Amazing Race' is, without a doubt, the toughest hosting assignment I've ever had in my career; it's certainly been the most rewarding," says Keoghan, who has been on the host beat for more than 20 years.

Though the physical demands of Keoghan's job are apparent, he says the skill in being a compelling host get overlooked. "If I can make it look easy, that means I'm doing my job properly," he says. "But the easier I make it look, that is a reflection on the preparation we've done up front."

No amount of preproduction research can anticipate the spontaneous moments that pop up in unscripted television, and that's where Keoghan says skill really comes into play. "The stuff I love most is where I have to take more responsibility for making things work in the moment," Keoghan says. "Pulling out good sound bites from people and trying to thread a story through shows."

Traveling to far-flung destinations has given Keoghan unique experiences. "I remember washing my hair out in front of the terra cotta warriors [in China]. . . . A guy says to me, 'The last person that was allowed down here to film anything was President Clinton.' It's kind of crazy that you get these incredible opportunities."

A bunch of thoughts on Emmy picks from the Hollywood Reporter:

Ed Bark
Writer, Unclebarky.com; former TV critic at the Dallas Morning News:

Reality-competition program pick: "Project Runway" (Bravo)

Quote
"(CBS') 'The Amazing Race' just can't win again. I think it is kind of ridiculous to just keep giving that show Emmys. I think 'Runway' might have a real shot both at getting nominated and maybe winning."

Dave Walker
TV columnist, The Times-Picayune (New Orleans):

Reality-competition program picks: "Project Runway" and "Top Chef" (Bravo), "The Amazing Race" (CBS)

Quote
"I think that it will be a combination between network and cable shows only because I think 'Project Runway' and maybe 'Top Chef' will work their way in. Both are high-quality shows that involve people with real talent, which is a distinguishing characteristic on reality television. I watched most of 'The Amazing Race' for the first time this year, and I thought, 'Wow. I have been missing out.'"

Diane Werts
Contributor, Newsday:

Reality-competition program picks: "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race" (CBS)

Quote
"'American Idol' and 'Project Runway' are hampered by a lot of people sitting in a room talking. 'Survivor' and the 'Amazing Race' get so much attention because they are big and they look movie-like, and there is a lot of activity and variety. So I think there is always going to be a bias toward that."

"the Academy is not a fan of reality"

Well, the Academy has increased the number of awards in the Reality categories so I disagree.

It is clear that the Academy is a fan of the Amazing Race(which is a reality show the last I heard). We should remember that it has awarded TAR 5 consecutive Emmys
Title: Re: EMMY News
Post by: mswood on September 14, 2008, 06:09:43 PM
Well they had he creative emmy awards this weekend, and AR was a wash.  Didn't win a damn thing.

They were nominated in:

Cinematography for reality shows/ lost to Carrier - Rites of Passage from PBS

Direction for Non fiction / lost to This American Life -  Escape from Showtime.

Editing for Reality program / Lost to Top Chief on Bravo

Sound Editing for non fiction programming / Lost to The War - When Things got Tough on PBS

Sound mixing for non fiction program / Lost to American Masters - Tony Bennett on PBS

So I believe the only thing left is OUtstanding Competitive Reality Show which will be announced on the Emmy awards show.

I am very curious.  I don't think we will win.  With fewer episodes then usual (thanks again CBS, still pissed) the show has a smaller pool of episodes to choose from and has been of th air longer then any of the other nominated shows.

Of course the one plus is that they often vote conservatively and that does favor AR.

Post by: gingerman28 on September 15, 2008, 02:58:27 PM
Yes, not a good sign.  In past seasons, TAR has at least won several of the technical awards.  Maybe after five in a row, the "voters" (whoever they are) are voting for a CHANGE. (It is the thing this year!)  And if they can nominate Howie Mandel and not our man with the lifted left eyebrow as a "reality" host, then all bets are off the table.

Reality-Competition Program
Will the epic Battle of the Davids give American Idol its first win? Probably not as long as The Amazing Race stays in the running. Nothing has its scale, visual splendor or degree of difficulty.

Rickles is the best! He stole the show! Kathy Griffin could not stop laughing.

And nice to see that TAR is the gold standard for reality shows. But really nice of Tony Shaloub of Monk to give a dirty look to Bertram as he was walking up to get his Emmy. Tony, you no talent hack!

From the USAtoday blog

http://blogs.usatoday.com/entertainment/
Jerry Bruckheimer, one of winning producers of Amazing Race said backstage: It’s my birthday today, this is the gift that keeps on giving.”

When asked if he would withdraw the producers names from competition after winning the category every time, to give someone else a chance, he said, "I doubt it ... we love these statues, we really do.
