The Mole" has come out of hiding.
ABC has given a 10-episode order to Stone & Co. Entertainment ("Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" to revive the reality competish, which hasn't aired in four years.

Casting and pre-production have begun on the show, which will likely start shooting later this spring. ABC is looking to run "The Mole" this summer.

I've never watched it but my friend told me it was really good.

I would go on any of these three -- big brother, survivor, amazing race.

anyways, i'll have to check the mole out.

I ended up picking up two seasons of this from Netflix, so I'm ready for the new series.

  How about Corbin Bersen?

Either of these two would be great hosts. Both love and understand the game and apparently neither is doing anything useful. The Mole is by far the most intelligent and engrossing reality show ever. I cannot wait to see it again. Having it set in Europe made challenges more difficult and it was great to see some of the foreign sites and customs.

Will there be a contest here of some type to guess who the mole is?

This was one of the best shows ever.  (Not the celeb versions, though.)

For anyone who wants a Mole fix, download the Australian version.  It's really good.  There were at least three seasons.

Only Mole 1 and Celebrity Mole Hawaii made it to DVD.  I have a feeling I know why Mole 2 never made it to DVD (hint: Burning Bags in the first episode).  You can still download the other non-DVD seasons through Bit-torrent or mIRC, I believe.

You need to inform me about burning bags. I never saw that season.
Title: Re: The Mole is back
Post by: TheCinera on January 09, 2008, 06:20:12 PM
Burning bags was a complete uproar in the media after the episode aired.  Here's what the game was about: In the first episode, the last game they played involved everyone's bags (including clothing and personal belongings from home) being suspended by crane over a large bonfire pit.  The only way to save them was to select four people who felt they knew the entire group the most.  Keep in mind, this was only day 3 or 4 of the game.  The four players had to get at least 2-3 questions right in order to save their bags.  If not, the bags were released into the firepit.  Low and behold, no one got any question correct, and the group watched helplessly as their bags were dropped into the large fire.

The reason why it was taken so badly in the media was because one contestant, Ali, told the confessional that she had her bible in the bags.  The Christian community called for a cancellation of the show because of the fact a bible was burned.  However, if you caught the second episode, viewers found out it was all a fluke and the bags that were burned were just decoys.  In other words, the bible was not burned.

After the fourth episode aired in the spring, ABC decided to put it on hiatus and air the rest of the season (with repeats of the first 4 episodes again) during the summer.  That was the last non-celebrity season to be filmed.

It was very dramatic at the time. IIRC, she cried because it was her family bible--and it was a good while before we were shown that the luggage had NOT been burned. I remember being very shocked! :lol:

They lost a lot of viewers from that.  I think that game was the reason they took the safe road to a celebrity edition.  But with it returning to the normal non-celeb format, I think Endemol has learned its lesson.

Plus Anderson Cooper learned his lesson and ran to CNN after the show ended.  :lol: :lol:

Post by: PirateDavid on January 10, 2008, 11:50:28 AM
I can't believe the Mole is coming back.  That may or may not be good news.  I loved the first two seasons, but hated the Celebrity Mole.   That might be because I thought Anderson Cooper was perhaps the best reality show host ever.  Bitchy gay men always make great reality show contestants.  Turns out, bitchy gay men make great reality show hosts too!

I agree about the burning bags though. That was way too mean.  I was watching the show with a friend of mine, and after watching that, he had no desire to watch any more of the "Mole".   I'm a bastard, however, so I enjoyed it.

Ooh!  I loved both non-celebrity versions of The Mole, and I even liked the two celebrity versions, although I missed Anderson Cooper!  I'd love to get on the show and try to figure out who the Mole is -- or maybe even be the Mole, although I doubt that they'll choose me.  If I can't get on, at least I can watch it and have some fun trying to figure it out from home!

I'm sure it'll be aired even if the strike ends.  I don't think the strike affected the decision to do it in the first place, so why should it affect the decision to air it?

However, I've decided not to go on the show after all.  After some soul-searching, I decided that it would be best for me to just watch it at home -- and do some column work on it for another website.

The following week, ABC will resurrect "The Mole" after an absence of several seasons. New host Jon Kelley ("Extra") will put 12 players through a series of challenges while one of them, the Mole, works to sabotage their chances of collecting more cash. I am so happy that The Mole is coming back!  It is my all-time favorite reality show (not the celebrity editions though).  It's the smartest reality game show out there.  I'm just bummed that Anderson Cooper isn't returning though.  But that's ok, at least the show is back, and that's good enough for me.

Found on another site, it looks like the Mole III has been filming in Chile.

Tags : None
It appears that this Mole will be taking place in South America - Chile to be exact, at least for part of the show. Here is an article from El Mercurio, on April 10th. (This is a cached copy from Google and is originally in Spanish - my translation may not be completely accurate)

----------------------------------

So is "The Mole", the successful reality that the U.S. channel ABC recorded in Chile

First it was James Bond. It is now one of the most important channels for the American television ABC, which elected Chile to produce one of its most successful programs: the reality show "The Mole."

Its return was announced for May 26, in prime time, and it began with a suprise alert, issued at the end of the season of "Lost."

"We chose Chile because it gives us the opportunity to go to the beach to the mountains and desert to the forest," said Scott Stone, the producer of the reality show, by telephone from Los Angeles.

"The Mole" returns to the screen after four years of recess. The program began with two successful seasons in 2001 and 2002, and its contestants must complete challenges, use equipment, and most importantly, look for evidence to find out who one is "the mole"; (ie, an infiltrator from the production to impede the tasks.) In 2003 and 2004 were two versions VIP, the latest in Yucatan (Mexico). "This program is different from other reality shows, because nobody is eliminated by popularity; Only those who know how to play succeed, not because they are more popular," says Stone, about the program, which this time will be led by Jon Kelley.

The producer said that the decision to record in Chile was made eight weeks ago and explained: "We were there three weeks and now we are going." It also adds: "The Chilean people were very kind to us and it was very easy to work."

The "Mole" was recorded in the Salto del Laja, Los Angeles, Concepcion, Santiago and several locations in Pomaire, which revolutionized the people last weekend. Will there be local aspects portrayed in reality? "There are many elements of Chilean culture that will emerge in the program: filmed in Pomaire with his famous Chanchitos, and also show the food, music, history, architecture and folklore of Chile" says Stone, who does not reveal how many of the 10 episodes of the program are conducted in the country.

The production said that was not associated with the James Bond movie, which was filming at the same time in the north. "The only thing that happened to us was that the police stopped us because of a broken mirror. That was the only thing that scared us," said a relaxed tone Stone, who still does not know if it is still an issue in Chile.

"Chile has a very beautiful landscape to record our program

Hmmm...that moves it out of sweeps.  I wonder if this has something to do with the shuffling to make room for the extra hour of Lost or if they just don't want ratings measure during sweeps month.  Either way, I think it's probably a good move.

ABC's The Mole Announces First Four Contestants

Friday, May 02, 2008

The first four of 12 players on "The Mole" can now be confirmed Kristen (Santa Monica, CA), Victoria (Bishop, TX), Clay (Philadelphia, PA) and Paul (Yonkers, NY). Dubbed television's smartest reality show, the new season of "The Mole" premieres MONDAY, JUNE 2 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on ABC. The series returns with all-new missions, locations and music, plus online and mobile interactivity, enabling more viewer participation during the 10 episodes. Jon Kelley ("Extra," "The National Sports Report," "Baseball Today") is host.
"The Mole," based on the hit Belgian format, is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and follows a group of players as they try to figure out who among them is The Mole, a saboteur trying to keep them from winning money. Players must decide who they think The Mole is and then learn as much about him or her as they can, because, at the end of each one-hour episode, the player who knows the least about The Mole is immediately eliminated from the game. In the final dramatic episode, The Mole is revealed and one of two final players wins a substantial cash prize.

The highly-rated ABC unscripted series has aired in various time periods during its four-season run, and was a consistent draw with key young adult viewers opposite established network competition, including NBC's "Law & Order" and the inaugural season of Fox's "American Idol." "The Mole" ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in its respective slots each season with Adults 18-34, and took second place in each of its time periods among Adults 18-49. Despite facing stiff demographic competition, "The Mole" improved each of its time periods among Adults 18-34.

Additional information about the show and players can be found at ABC.com. Here are mini-bios for the first batch of players to be announced

Is Kristen The Mole?

KRISTEN Age: 35 Occupation: Neuroscientist Santa Monica, CA Education: PhD, UCLA

Kristen says that, because she's tall, blonde and beautiful, no one ever thinks she could be a neuroscientist. She's currently conducting research to find a cure for Parkinson's Disease at UCLA. Growing up in an upper-middle class family in the Midwest, Kristen showed horses competitively and also dabbled in modeling. She says that competing her entire life as an equestrian and scientist have made her hone skills that will serve her well in the game and believes her athleticism and naturally strategic mind will also be assets. Kristen feels her best trait is her kindness, and her worst is that she's a perfectionist.

Is Victoria The Mole?

VICTORIA Age: 26 Occupation: Retail Manager Bishop, TX Education: B.A., Texas A&M University, Kingsville

Victoria is a spunky, former pageant girl and cheerleader from a small town in Texas. She once told pageant judges that her favorite reality show was "The Mole" because you get to be deceptive in the game. This didn't go over so well with the judges. Victoria is very close to her family and professes to be a daddy's girl. She admits that her looks and sweet demeanor often get her what she wants, especially from men, and though people often mistake her for a nave, small town girl, she admits she can be conniving when she wants to be. Victoria says people usually underestimate her intelligence, but she is much more observant and deceptive than she lets on. She considers herself very competitive and says she won't hesitate to backstab in the game if she has to. She admits one of her flaws is that she cusses like a sailor.

Is Clay The Mole?

CLAY Age: 32 Occupation: Criminal Litigation Attorney Philadelphia, PA Education: Law Degree, Howard Law School

Clay is a devoted husband and father of two sons who likens his household to the Cosby family. He feels that the skills he uses as a criminal trial attorney will closely parallel his strategy in the game, and plans to use his argumentative abilities to convince others to do what he wants. Clay is analytical and can easily hide his emotions. He says he will use the same skills he employs in selecting a jury for figuring out who the Mole is, and that because of his trial experience, he has developed a keen sense of how to read people from all walks of life. Clay thinks he can outsmart the other players in the game because he's smarter than most people. He does admit that he suffers a bit from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), and has been known to touch a light switch ten times before he can leave a room.

Is Paul The Mole?

PAUL Age: 29 Occupation: Machinist Yonkers, NY Education: Attended Pace University

Paul has the accent and demeanor that clearly reveal he's an Italian New Yorker from Yonkers. He works 9 to 5 as a machinist for a utility company, and as a wedding DJ on the weekends. It was at one of these weddings that he met his wife and his life changed forever. A self-professed, former "pla'ya", Paul is now a man who dotes on his family, especially the love of his life, his two-year-old daughter. Outgoing and with a charismatic personality, he feels he has an advantage in "The Mole" because, growing up, his father worked for a spy gadget company and would use the gadgets to spy on his kids. Paul considers confidence, his best trait and his worst trait, and admits -- his wife will readily agree -- that he just doesn't know when to shut up.

Of the twelve contestants named, most look like they are twenty-somethings or thirty-somethings.  Only Liz looks to be over the hill and over 40.  Guess TPTB are aiming at the younger 18-35 year audience.  Ah, but us old coots just like to look at all the youngens.

The next four of 12 players on ABC's "The Mole" are confirmed - Nicole (Chicago, IL), Ali (St. Louis, MO), Bobby (Philadelphia, PA) and Mark (Mukwonago, WI). Dubbed television's smartest reality show, the new season of "The Mole" premieres MONDAY, JUNE 2 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC. Television Network. Despite facing stiff demographic competition, "The Mole" improved each of its time periods among Adults 18-34.

Additional information about the show and players can be found at ABC.com. Here are mini-bios for the second batch of players to be announced:

NICOLE    Age: 32
Occupation: OBGYN doctor
Chicago, IL
Education: MD, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine

Nicole says she has the ability to be a social chameleon, a skill she's developed by growing up in a lower-middle class, African-American neighborhood, working in a white collar profession and dealing with a wide range of patients. She says she can be street or professional when she needs to be, has a strong personality and isn't shy about letting her opinions be known. Nicole is very proud of being a doctor and has no problem with being considered a diva. She is close with her mother and credits her with her success.

ALI        Age: 24
Occupation: Model
St. Louis, MO
Education: Associate's Degree, St. Louis Community College

Ali is a model who has worked as a ring girl for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. She describes herself as "stunning" and believes her beauty helps her get her way, but also causes people to instantly dismiss her -- which she plans on using to her benefit in the game. Ali used to be a wild, party girl. She celebrated her 21st birthday with Motley Crue in Las Vegas. But now she treats her body as a temple. She has strong religious beliefs and has settled down with her boyfriend, a UFC fighter. She claims to have a 75% accuracy rate with shotguns and is experienced in fishing. Ali considers herself ambitious and caring, but also forgetful and prone to road rage. She plans on using her beauty and brains to outsmart other players.

BOBBY     Age: 25
Occupation: Restaurant manager
Philadelphia, PA
Education: B.A., Penn State

Bobby loves games, competing and winning, though you may not know it from his low key exterior. He's a hardcore fan of "The Mole" and used to host "Mole" viewing parties in his basement. He knows the game well and has a solid strategy to form coalitions with less intelligent players whom he can lead astray. Bobby feels that being selected as a player on "The Mole" is the fulfillment a lifelong dream, and that also being gay, his "gaydar" -- the ability to recognize other gay people -- will help him read others players in the game. Bobby considers himself loveable and generous, but also stubborn and vengeful. He used to work as a restaurant manager until recently, when his restaurant closed. Bobby feels his knowledge of the game guarantees him a spot among the final three players.

MARK         Age: 42
Occupation: High school history teacher/soccer coach
Mukwonago, WI
Education: B.A., University of Wisconsin, Whitewater

Mark is an extremely competitive high school soccer coach and world history teacher. He plays to win and has no tolerance for whiners. A huge fan of "The Mole," Mark has seen all the previous seasons and will be very intense and focused about playing the game. His only weakness is his family: Mark grew up poor, in a broken family, but his life turned around when he met his wife. He can get very emotional about his wife of 18 years and his three kids, whom he considers his life. He also has a fourth child on the way. Mark says he thrives on competition and being challenged, and has an IQ of 143. His strategy is to figure out an "end game," whereby he foresees a desired end and the most advantageous route for himself towards it, then does everything in his power to manipulate things in that direction.

Right now, I think they're more likely to pick a man as the Mole since three of the previous four Moles -- including the two Celebrity Moles -- were women.  And right now, Bobby and Mark look like strong suspects.  But I'll be looking for the contestants that blend in the background during the first episode.  I think the best Mole is one who sabotages the challenges but in a subtle way (usually).

 :jumpy: The Mole has added 4 more contestants to their site. Liz Marcie Alex and Craig, 17 more days to go  :wohoo:
Title: Re: The Mole is back
Post by: TheCinera on May 16, 2008, 02:20:20 PM
ALEX

    * Age: 31
    * Occupation: Musician
    * Haverford, PA
    * Education: Attended University of Colorado, Boulder

      Alex grew up in the suburbs outside Philadelphia. He has been drawn to music his whole life. In high school, he was president of the jazz band and now Alex is an aspiring musician, the lead guitarist for a fledgling rock band. He doesn't want to compromise his aspirations of being a musician, thus he works odd jobs and lives at home with his parents while waiting for his big break. He says he communicates best through his music. He plans on bringing his guitar to help entertain his fellow players with a song he wrote especially for The Mole. His strategy is to be the "nice guy" but he says he can play dirty if he needs to. He learned to speak Spanish from his mother and lived in Costa Rica for five years. He considers himself an expert marksman.

CRAIG

    * Age: 30
    * Occupation: Graphic Designer
    * San Diego, CA
    * Education: B.A. Point Loma Nazarene University

      Craig has been overweight his entire life so he developed a sense of humor to make friends. He is a lovable prankster with a big heart, and his magnetic personality has gotten him through life. Craig plans on using his endearing nature and non-threatening appearance to win the players' trust and then manipulate them. Craig knows his physical limitations, but says this can be an asset in the game because everyone will underestimate him. He hopes to surprise everyone with his abilities. Craig has sleep apnea, so he must sleep with a special machine to help him breath while sleeping. Craig has traveled extensively and worked as a humanitarian disaster relief aide worker in Turkey and Thailand.

LIZ

    * Age: 60
    * Occupation: Retired
    * Whitefish, MT
    * Education: Associate's Degree, New Mexico Tech.

      Liz has more energy than people half her age. She lives life to the fullest and does not let age stand in her way. She won't hesitate to shock people with her outlandish sense of humor. Liz is a widow. When her husband passed away, she decided to adopt two children and raise them on her own. She has an 18-year-old daughter, a senior in high school, and a 20-year-old son in the army, who recently gave her a grandchild. Her son may be deployed to Iraq at any time. She suffers a bit from an empty nest, so she is eager to have this adventure to bring some excitement into her life. Liz feels that her age will be an asset for her in the game because with age comes wisdom, especially when dealing with younger people.

MARCIE

    * Age: 31
    * Occupation: Stay-at-home Mom
    * Corona, CA

      Marcie got pregnant in high school and married her high school sweetheart. She is a devoted wife and mother with three sons. Marcie is married to a police officer. By devoting her entire life to raising her family, Marcie has missed out on the opportunity to do something just for herself. But Marcie believes that being a stay-at-home mom is the most important job that anyone can have. Stay-at-home moms are not people that can't do anything else, they just choose to raise their families rather than pursue a career. Playing this game will be her big adventure and an opportunity to prove she is more than "just a mom." She feels that others will underestimate her and she will use that to her advantage. Spanish is her first language and she speaks it fluently.

At least one contestant older than ca bb! :kuss:

Could TPTB select another "mature" contestant to be the mole?

Looks like Marcie and Alex will have an advantage if indeed the first eps are filmed in Chile.

 :-* GMan, I don’t think you could get me to take that plunge of the Laja Falls either,

so I think we would have to find a spot on the grass and enjoy the youngens along with the view  ;)

Anything is possible on who the mole could be and I certainly don't disregard any possible clues.

Meet 'The Mole' and 11 Other Players
Resurrected ABC reality show premieres June 2

They are scientists, doctors, machinists and models. And one of them is a saboteur.

ABC has revealed the identities of the 12 contestants on its resurrected reality show "The Mole," which returns to the air on June 2 after a four-year absence (it's been six years since the last non-celebrity version).

The series, hosted by Jon Kelley, will kick off in Chile, where contestants will have to jump over the edge of a waterfall, among other challenges. And, as in past incarnations, one of the 12 players is the Mole, secretly working to foil the plans of the other contestants. As with the previous editions, the player who knows the least about the Mole in each episode is eliminated, and the winner stands to pocket $500,000.

The 12 players range in age from 24 to 60 and include a neuroscientist, a restaurant manager, a retiree and a musician. Viewers will have to figure out for themselves just who the Mole is, however; ABC is promising a heavy online presence for the show so viewers can play along.

.... an interesting article:

ABC's 'The Mole' resurfaces with a new host

The Mole is out of hiding.

After a four-year hiatus, ABC's cloak-and-dagger reality series returns tonight (10 ET/PT) with 12 players competing for prize money while trying to identify a saboteur in their ranks.

Why the return after such a long absence? ABC just took a fresh look at a format that drew a good amount of young viewers and has maintained fan interest, says John Saade, who oversees ABC's alternative series.

"It was a different regime here and different priorities, and (ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson) was willing to give it another shot," Saade says.

"It's the one show that people always ask about. People are already playing the game now based just on the promos and a little bit that's on the website."

Tonight, in the first of 10 episodes, contestants begin with a rafting money grab above a waterfall in Los Angeles, Chile, the start of challenges at various locations in South America.

One obvious change is the new host, Jon Kelley (Extra), who succeeds Anderson Cooper and Ahmad Rashad.

The Mole features frequent interaction between the host and contestants, and Kelley works well with them, Saade says. "The host has to be someone who tweaks the characters a little bit but also be a good traffic cop. Jon's great," he says.

After the long absence, the producers will remind old and new viewers how The Mole works.

"We're expecting a lot of new viewers, which is why we took great pains, particularly in Episode 1, to produce it with the novice viewer in mind," executive producer Scott Stone says.

As with earlier editions of the series, players must try to determine the identity of the mole. They will be quizzed at the end of each episode, with the player who knows the least being eliminated, or executed, in Mole-speak. In the final episode, the mole will be revealed, and one player can win up to $500,000.

In an effort to engage the audience, the quiz has been shortened from 25 questions to 10, and viewers will be able to answer all of them with information presented on the program.

"In the past, some of the questions would be about things you wouldn't have been able to learn unless you were there on location or one of the players," executive producer Clay Newbill says. The new system "really ups the play-along ability for viewers at home."

Producers say that makes the quiz more accessible, not dumbed-down as some critics contend. Even with player profiles and other clues available early on The Mole's website at abc.com, some fans have come to the wrong conclusions, Stone says.

The Mole has presented both celebrity and non-celebrity editions, but the producers and Saade prefer the latter, which also features the element of travel. This field includes an obstetrician/gynecologist and a neuroscientist.

"I prefer the civilian model," Newbill says. "I think the stakes are greater."

.... another interesting article

Critic's pick: 'The Mole'

My passion for "The Mole" should be no secret to anyone by now. The reality-competition series, which debuted in 2001, was one of the smartest, funniest and most exciting ever, and its demise (after two watered-down celebrity editions) was deeply disappointing for fans, who always hoped it would return. Well, miracles do happen, and "The Mole" is back.

The game has 12 players traveling the world and competing together on money-earning "missions." (First up: going over a waterfall in Chile, at night.) The money goes into a communal pot that the eventual winner will take home. But the twist is that one of the 12 is the Mole, a saboteur whose mission is to keep the others from succeeding while successfully hiding his or her own identity. Jon Kelley is the new host, succeeding Anderson Cooper (who moved on to CNN) and Ahmed Rashad (who took over for the celebrity editions).

The new season's players include Ali, 24, a model from St. Louis. (Is she the Mole?) Also on the roster are Alex, 31, a musician from Haverford, Pa.; Bobby, 25, a restaurant manager from Philadelphia; Clay, 32, a lawyer from Philadelphia; Craig, 30, a graphic designer from San Diego; Kristen, 36, a Parkinson's disease researcher from Santa Monica, Calif; Liz, 60, a retiree from Whitefish, Mont.; Marcie, 31, a stay-at-home mom from Corona, Calif.; Mark, 42, a teacher and soccer coach (and self-proclaimed "Mole" fanatic) from Mukwonago, Wis.; Nicole, 32, an obstetrician from Chicago; Paul, 29, a machinist from Yonkers, N.Y.; and Victoria, 26, a retail manager from Bishop, Texas.

Watch it? If you miss "The Amazing Race."

UH-OH!  :'(

ABC’s “The Mole” had an inauspicious return after a four-year absence last night, finishing third in its timeslot and losing a good deal of its “Bachelorette” lead-in.

“Mole” averaged a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating at 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, well behind timeslot leader NBC’s 2.9 for game five of the Stanley Cup finals. It was also behind a 2.6 for a repeat of “CSI: Miami” on CBS.

I hope ABC plans to run a repeat of the premiere episode sometime this week.  That might be a good idea to sucker in more viewers.  I guess the subliminal advertising didn't help.

Well ABC has put together a nice cast and a nice show. They have done their part in advertising and promoting it beautifully.

So now it is up to us to talk it up, get our friends interested, and turn a slow start into a great second week!

We've been waiting WAY too long for this to let it slip away--so rally the troops, guys!!   :yess:

I just checked the ABC message boards and TV.com, and neither one hinted anything about it being possibly cancelled or put on hiatus.  I know I saw an ad for the second episode on last night's Jimmy Kimmel Live primetime special (at 8pm).

At 10 p.m., CBS' "CSI: Miami" posted a 5.9/10 to beat out "Nashville Star," which ticked up to 4.4/8. "The Mole" came in at 2.7/5 for ABC.

I love The Mole but it's boring to watch!  I'm trying and will keep trying but for some reason they are missing the mark and hopefully when they get down to the final people it will pick up quite a bit!  But to me it's on the same level as BB (boring) which has to really redeem itself this summer or it will be a bye-bye show too!  And I love BB.

I'm having a hard time getting into it.  Don't care much for the host, but know he's trying.  He just seems robotic or something.

I still need to watch the 2nd half of Ep 2 and all of Ep 3 to catch up.
