Title: EP4: "Let's Name Our Chicken Phil"
Post by: puddin on November 10, 2007, 10:06:28 PM

Clues:
LET'S NAME OUR CHICKEN PHIL
It's American Idol, African-style, as Teams take center stage and dance to impress local celebrities from Burkina Faso. Perform without originality and suffer a 10-minute penalty!
A new wrinkle in the Race causes friction between two Teammates as one fears a target has been painted on their backs and karma will bite them from behind.
One Racer cannot control tears from flowing as she is surprised by how kind the people of Africa have been to her.

Well I don't know but here goes and remember this can be changed -- I'm guessing here!! ^^ Thats a good idea banzai, wish we knew 100% about the U-turn wrinkle.

tv guide magazine blurb:
11/25 Amazing Race 12:
Sure we love the globe-trotting and the challenges, but we also can't help but chortle with delight as teamates turn on one another ---like one duo does tonight. Hee-hee!  My guess Shana & Jennifer, Jennifer is worried because Shana chose to U-Turn Jason/Lorena

Clues:
LET'S NAME OUR CHICKEN PHIL  Jason & Lorena?

.
*One Racer cannot control tears from flowing as she is surprised by how kind the people of Africa have been to her.  Hendeka?

Teams leave the pitstop in this order~

Azaria & Hendekea -1st Place (Safe= Croatia)
TK & Rachel 2nd- Place (Safe=Croatia)
Nathan & Jennifer -3rd Place  (in danger?)
Kynt & Vyxsin - 4th Place (safe = Croatia)
Ron & Christina - 5th Place(Safe=Croatia)
Nicolas & Donald - 6th Place (Safe= Croatia)
Shana & Jennifer - 7th Place(Safe= Croatia)
Lorena & Jason - 8th Place (in danger?)

Detours Break Out or Dig Out
My spec:

U-turn: the chicken task; it's an extra task; when they're done, come back and do the detour
Roadblock: the bicycle task; Jenn is solo; it's her turn to do it; they alternate every leg
Detour: American Idol or Gold Digging
thanks to banzai

*TEAMS MUST BREAK OUT THEIR DANCE MOVES OR INCUR A COSTLY PENALTY AT A DETOUR IN BURKINA FASO, AFRICA, ON "THE AMAZING RACE 12

*Teams must impress the local judges in Burkina Faso with their dance moves to avoid a penalty and receive their next clue

That doesn't sound like Florence to me...

Still in Africa after all??

I always thought India after Burkina? I dunno?

ETA:
OH BOY! Look At THIS ONE!

AOL article: (http://television.aol.com/feature/amazing-race-12-preview)

"After 12 seasons, you don't want the contestants to go into the race thinking, 'I know what's next,'" said co-executive producer Elise Doganieri. The show will crisscross the world, from Holland to India to Croatia, and head to a few off-the-beaten-track towns that will send viewers grabbing for their globes.

Gosh--I never took that order literally? Should we?

I was thinking BF, +/- other Africa, Florence, Dubrovnik, Lithuania, India, ?somewhere, Osaka, Taipei, Girdwood, Finale.

Maybe BF is a TBC and they're still chasing chickens?

puddin, please look at the Speculative Timelines thread for guidance on where teams go next after Burkina Faso. Niamey, Niger is speculative, but there are some very substantial reasons for it. It is almost certain that teams do NOT go directly to India from Burkina Faso for these reasons:

1. The time incurred to go to India and then back to Europe would add 2 days and this Amazing Race doesn't have 2 days to spare if all stops are going to be made and Alaska reached by July 29.

2. Bertram stated that there would be 2 African stops. I believe him.

3. The only sensible way to get to India is from Vilnius and to Osaka.

4. NOTE: ADDED LATER - The optimum flights to Delhi India(gateway to Jaisalmer and a lot of other places in India) are via Paris-Charles-DeGaulle airport coming from West African places such as Ouagadougou or Niamey or several other West African capital cities because that is the way the air routes were set up. It makes no sense to fly to India and then return to Europe to catch Florence, Dubrovnik and Vilnius when you are right there in Europe for that connection.

I think people who are reading Elise Doganieri's statement Holland to India to Croatia literally are making a mistake.

May not be an actual TBC, but BF could be one complete leg at the end of which when the meet Phil on the mat he tells them "keep on racing, here is your next clue - proceed to Niamey, Niger. " Same was done when teams met Phil in Red Square in Moscow and they were told this was not the end but continue on to Stuttgart.  This makes Africa into two legs but only one pit stop.

Peach's eloquent research on the rain in Spain(no that was Burkina Faso) has motivated me to take another look at the possibilities for West African cities that AR12 could fly to directly and quickly from Ouagadougou. I developed a list of the major cities nearby:

Cotonhou, Benin
Abidjan, Ivory Coast
Bamako, Mali
Accra, Ghana
Lagos, Nigeria

I then examined the nonstop flight possiblities from OUA on the morning of July 15(since the Burkina Faso pitstop or TBC is going to start late afternoon or evening of July 14). The results were as follows:

COO, ACC, and LOS - none
ABJ - 2J(Air Burkina) 322 0800 0930
BKO 2J 338 1345 1530

We now have to look on the other end for flights out to Europe. Both of these have nonstop late evening flights to CDG as well as very early morning connections through Casablanca:

ABJ CDG AF703 2235 0600 +1 or ABJ CMN AT532 0240 0700  CMN CDG 0755 1200
connecting with AF5038 0720 0915

BKO CDG AF791 2350 0620 +1 or BKO CMN AT522 0325 0700 CMN CDG 0755 1200
connecting with AF5038 0720 0915

All of these could work, depending on when teams get released from the pitstop or equivalent. I doubt that World Race Productions would have teams arriving Bamako early afternoon and then flying out late that evening or at 320am the next morning. To me it would make more sense to use Abidjan if they are going to use this alternative at all. I still like the road route to Niamey, Niger. We'll see.

Thanks apskip for doing all that! Darn rainy season!

It is interesting that all the clothing/camels/etc that we have so far seems to work equally as well in Niger as in Burkina Faso so I think that that remains a possibility--just might need charter flights. But Abidjan is harder to say, so who knows?

Clearly by the title we aren't in Florence so still have to be in Africa somewhere. Some sort of or variation of a TBC. And I do hope BVM had the "2 African countries" right--sometimes it is hard to trust his geography! :rotf:

We need some more info to sort this out--hopefully the previews will help!

Here's some interesting transportation news:

The Dori-Téra road is the only section of the Ouagadougou - Kaya - Dori - Téra - Niamey inter-states highway not yet developed. The African Development Fund (ADF) July 11 approved a grant amounting to US$ 1 million to finance the development study of the road section of an approximate length of 100 km linking the locality of Dori in Burkina Faso to that of Téra in Niger. The border areas between Niger and Burkina Faso however have increased in economic relevance during the last years due to several new discoveries of gold. Industrial gold mining is now to start on the Nigerien side of the border and has already started on the Burkinabe side. More gold bearing zones are expected to be found in the region.

So this means that the current road is in miserable condition. I've been wondering what the tasks in Niger might be. The major economic acitivity in Niger is millet procution. Perhaps one task could be mining. Past Amazing Races have loved to highlight mining tasks.

Wikipedia may not be the most reliable spurce, but from their section on the economy in Nigeria...

Once the biggest poultry producer in Africa, corporate poultry output has been slashed from 40 million birds annually to about 18 million. Import constraints limit the availability of many agricultural and food processing inputs for poultry and other sectors.

Well interesting...but it is NIGER and not NIGERIA we've been considering for this leg. Easy to confuse though!

Any word on chickens--or children! (see--even CBS does it! ) in NIGER?

I'm starting to wonder whether TAR goes to Niamey or not.  Niger is considered by the UN to be the poorest country on earth.  Not much infrastructure to support TAR production crews.  Lousy climate to boot.

Depends on if you believe the 2 African country quote or not. I think that since it was not a direct quote from BVM, that there is room to believe that the reporter misheard or misunderstood perhaps? and that we may not see another African leg at all.

But I can also talk myself into believing that it could make sense to have another leg right "next door" too...

Guess we'll have to wait and see unless puddin turns up a new promo today!

 They really shouldn't have decided to have a Niger and a Nigeria!

Anyways, I found that NIGER is woried about their chickens being effected by the bird flu, but articals alsoi state that chances of the bird flu becoming severe in West Africa are slim. I'll keep searching, i have nothing better to do on a rainy day, but atleast we know they have chickens out there for agriculture.

GMAN, we may get enough clues and we may not. However, please keep in mind that the leg following the TBC could be something like "take a ride 4 hours to Niamey, do some minor task and get thee to the pistop." It doesn't have to have a lot going for it. Burkina Faso doesn't either and they are there. African legs are colorful and have a lot of audience appeal regardless of where they are and what tasks are being done.

It is clear that Bingo is not a tremendous distance from Ouagadougou. That means that the whole philosophy of taking road transport to Niamey as the next place is now highly unlikely. To meet the "2 African countries statement" teams will most probably fly to another country. The question is to which country? My previous work identified these two possibilities from Ouagadougou(since teams have reached the pitstop in the morning of July 14, they could get there by midnight if there is a nearby road and taxi pickup has been pre-arranged by World Race Production). Those possibilities are :

Abidjan, Ivory Coast - 2J(Air Burkina) 322 0800 0930
Bamako, Mali 2J 338 1345 1530

It could be either one. They could also stay in Burkina Faso if the originator of "2 African countries" meant Burkina and Faso.

Those caps all look to be taken from the same place (buildings in first two caps; the bikes in the background of the second and eighth caps possibly) so the blondes catch up with the main pack, Lorena/Jason may catch up as well since it looks like they're watching another team. I'm guessing the dancing is the first task and that it has a start time later in the morning. The actual task (which could be a Detour choice or not) I'm thinking is that the teams have to learn the dance and are judged; if they pass, they go on, but if they fail, they have to wait for all the other teams behind them before they can make another attempt (much like the ice bar in TAR 6). Judging from how one of the blondes (Shana?) takes her sweater off, I'd say they were there for a while. I guess the Shana/Jennifer controversy happens here as well. After that, I dunno, but whether they stay in BF or go to another country, the leg's probably going to end the night of the 15th (which sets up nicely for a leg in Europe to end early on the 17th before Croatia).

Teams arrived in Croatia on the 19th according to our source......

But Hi and :welcome2: zachattack!!

Thanks for the welcome :)

If Croatia's on the 19th, then either there's an extra stop (Lithuania? an extra leg in Italy?) or an extended pit-stop (or I goofed). FWIW, I vote extended pit-stop or extra Italy leg.

LET'S NAME OUR CHICKEN PHIL
*It's American Idol, African-style, as Teams take center stage and dance to impress local celebrities from Burkina Faso. Perform without originality and suffer a 10-minute penalty!
*A new wrinkle in the Race causes friction between two Teammates as one fears a target has been painted on their backs and karma will bite them from behind.
*One Racer cannot control tears from flowing as she is surprised by how kind the people of Africa have been to her.

Staying in Burkina (after a pit stop) would suggest tasks the next day (it's light out) & possibly missing the only flight out of Oug...back to Europe.  (One flight per day?)

Would this make an uber bunch (following the tasks) & long hours (or an overnight) at the airport likely?  Also making the U turn (or whatever dastardly deed the blondes did) not a big deal to the affected team.

Not really sure what this episode will be about or where it will take place, but I'm thinking it has to deal with the new wrinkle in the race next week between Shana/Jennifer and Jason/Lorena. It looks like one of them could have said it?

since it's obvious that the blondes use the new twist next week could they possibly say the title for the episode afterwards, indicating that they survive this episode for sure? I know it's grasping at straws but oh well. (im not posting this because i want them to stay BTW since I know thats what you're all thinking, i dont even like them!  :dick )

Croatia is a country located in Southern Europe, it was a state of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later known as Yugoslavia) and Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1918-1991.

ApprenticeFan, I usually give this advice to rookies, which you are not.  There is a rather large body of information in particular about Dubrovnik (because AR12 is probably not going to the rest of Croatia) including city maps and history and possible sightseeing other than the zipline and rowing and other tasks that we already know about in other threads, including MAPs! Maps! Maps!. Additional information is always appreciated, but you might want to find out exactly what is already on the other threads.

hound 109, I am not going to speculate on the U turn. On the other questions you raise:

That one flight is the evening of July 16. They cannot reasonably make the evening of July 15 with tasks and a 12 hour pitstop, so I predict a 24 hour pistop. There will still be an uberbunch because it's unavoidable with all teams flying on one flight) AF735 departed OUA at 2340 and arrived CDG at 0610 on July 17. That may be enough time to connect to the Air France 0720 flight to Florence.

Hi Everyone! Long time lurker here but I finally decided to join in the fun. Apskip, I'm not sure if thats enough time for the connection at CDG. Last year I was on a flight from L.A. to Florence, connecting to CDG and I have one a half hour to do it. The lines through CDG customs for non-EU members moves pretty slow. What makes it harder is that the CDG-Florence flights are typically smaller planes so they don't have their own gates (connected to the terminal). When the teams get to the gate, they get checked in then they have to take a bus that will take them to the plane that is sitting on the tarmac. I almost missed my flight last year ( I had to beg some folks ahead of the line if theres any way I can cut...I know its bad but I had to do it... I got there 2 minutes before the gates were closed.)  and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the teams misses their connection.

In one scene, TK and Jenny are speaking to someone else off camera.  TK: "You guys chose to do it." and Jenny: "You got to live with it."

To whom are they speaking: One guess Rachel and Nathan.  Or another team. (Shana and Jennifer?) But that is not Rachel with TK, nor is it one of the LA blondes. So it must be Nathan's Jenny.

So could this be the U-Turn?  Go back and repeat something?

Speed bump sounds like a Yield - something to slow the game down.

At the end could they catch the train from Bingo to Abidjan instead of back to O.? And catch a plane from there to CDG?

That would add another African country.  Have they been to Cote de'Ivoire before?

The quick answer is NO. The could fly to Abidjan from Ouagadougou, but not take a train. Train service between Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast has been terminated at the border due to all the disruption in Ivory Coast for many months.

Quote
So we were off from Bobo-Dioulasso, pilgrims crammed into a chartered mini-van the size of a phone booth, chickens hung off the back, squawking as if menaced by gigantic fish with foot-long whiskers.

The chicken viewpoint was obvious: sacred catfish be damned.

After ricocheting along a deeply eroded riverbed, abruptly ending at the precipitous edge of a dry waterfall, we piled out to find this was no tourist trap. The steep trail was littered with locals toting chickens and handmade hoes, no tourists except us, a bona fide pilgrimage to the pools of the sacred catfish.

Hey bro, what are the hoes for?

Plucking a chicken to feed the sacred
catfish
What the Hoe is For

We followed gaggles of children down the waterfall. The children were tugging on the thumbs of paterfamilias and better halves bedecked in everything from bib overalls to Sunday-go-to-meeting paraphernalia, hoes slung over shoulders.

At the bottom of red rock cliffs resembling Sedona country -- feel the energy vortex -- we found ourselves slipping and sliding on viscous red feathers, and also found out what the hoe were for; clunk, no more chicken squawk.

Oui, monsieur, you must take off your shoes and the hat. Ees sacred.

Walk barefoot over ratty chicken feathers spattered with blood: get real. But ees sacred. So we hauled off our shoes and gingerly tiptoed under giant shade trees set between sacred catfish pools, roasting three much quieter chickens.

Ever shucked a chicken? Fun is a chicken-plucker, made palatable by the relish of adding to inches of feathers covering an area the size of a football field.

Random Protuberances

But hey, don’t go there.

Red hot chili peppers

Halt for a skinny dipping lady with no fear of nipped off protuberances.

But don’t twitching tendrils tickle tender tushes?

Apparently not, so we ground to a halt, stymied on our drive to deliver lucky hearts and gizzards to hallowed and apparently hollow, catfish.

We were chomping-at-the-bit, anxious to solicit the luck of the sacred catfish blessing. After much thumb-twiddling on our part, the brave lady emerged, buffed herself dry, and leisurely dressed, eventually allowing us to push bravely forward and deliver the bounty to voracious bewhiskered fish, spoiled rotten and likely susceptible to some form of mad catfish disease.

The Lucky Blessed

After all, they’d devoured a protein species of ill repute. Cannibalism should likely be prohibited among all species whose names begin with C.

Like everyone else, we were among the lucky blessed. The sacred catfish, menacing and swirling in their enormousness, devoured every savory morsel. The pilgrimage insured our future fortune and happiness, which we immediately reaped at the music and film festivals in Ouagadougou (pronounced Waga-doo-goo), the capitol of Burkina Faso.

Feed the Holy Catfish!!

This one also from TexasLady!   :hearts: :yess:

Quote
July 4, 2004: Bobo Dioulasso - Dafra - Koro - Bobo Dioulasso By mobylette, we go to the "holy fish". Wim is sitting at the back, holding a chicken and Moumou is driving. I have my own mobylette, but no chicken… Over a rough 8 km dirt road, through mud zones and over wet fields, we arrive in Dafra.

From here it is a beautiful walk down to the "Mare aux Poissons Sacrés" through an astonishing mountain landscape. Our chicken is getting quiet. Does it know its destiny? Once we are down at the lake, we hand it over to a local. He is going to sacrifice the intestines to the huge cat fish. Barefoot, we walk over the chicken feathers to the slaughter table. The chicken looses its head, feathers, paws and intestines within a few minutes. The meat will later be grilled and eaten by the people here. But it is time to feed the fish… Due to the heavy rain, the water is brown and we can only see some black beards like little snakes on the surface.

The intestines disappear quickly, and we are a bit disappointed. The show is over… But for the local people, who come here, this is not at all a show. It is all part of their animist culture/religion. By offering food to the fish, they want to make the gods happy, so that their problems will be solved. On our way up, we cross more people, who are going down with a goat, a sheep, some chickens,…

Well--they chopped off a chicken's head on Kid Nation this season--so maybe yes? :umn:

    :wohoo:  puddin!

Okay! We have an outline!

Dance to receive your next clue and avoid a ten minute penalty

Detours:

Gold? Mine x  amount of gold

Gulp? Go feed your chicken to the catfish (spec)

Questions:

Where does the bicycle come in?

And can anyone enlarge and sharpen this shot? If we could get a clearer view of the license tag and the stone mile marker it would help pinpoint our location! :yess:

MIA: Roadblock...will this be the TBC? Is there time to fit the roadblock in?? all to be determined!

But the Break it looks like a detour peach and CBS says it is? Christina says to Ron that hes really good at shaking his booty as she reads the clues by the arrows?
If they feed a live chicken to a catfish I'll eat boogers  :lol3:

I'm calling the detours break it or beak it :elvis:
Roadblock panning for gold?

I thought one of the Webclues said teams have to dance IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THEIR CLUE? So they get the clue and choose?

So you think mining could be a Roadblock then?

Am I all confused?  Totally possible! :lol3: :dknow :nut: :dknow

They are taking that chicken on it's last drive somewhere....dum dum dum DUM!

Hey--as long as we have something to play with--I don't care!

Roadblock: the bicycle task; Jenn is solo; it's her turn to do it; they alternate every leg
Detour: American Idol or Gold Digging

I'm pretty sure that it is the DETOUR.  Notice the double arrow sign behind Ronald/Christina?  I go along with Puddin on this.  So, we have the following doing the Dance with the Stars:

Ronald/Christina
Kynr/Vyxsin
Azaria/Hendekea
Jason/Lorena
Shana/Jennifer
Nathan/Jenny

Not seen or doing the other task:
Donald/Nickolas
TK/Rachel

Chicken Little can't be other half of detour since we have Jason/Lorena with chick in the car

Gold mining has to be a Detour because we see Nicholas and Don mining together.

So Detour ==Dance or Mine
Roadblock==Bikes?

Chicken ==U-Turn or Speedbump since we only see Jason/Lorena doing it and we know they get something done to them by the Blondes. Otherwise, I would say it could even be a FF!

I don't know where the vans come in but there are 2 behind Kynt & Vyxsin aside the fact that we see Lorena/Jason in one and the Blondes in another.

Mining==Detour

need a clearer shot of that bike! and the van!

But the gold nuggets are being poured into a little portable scale--so they have to mine X number of grammes or something...

The blondes from LaLaLand seem to have different outfits on in the van?  Or as one of them just removed her striped rugby shirt?  So it looks like van ride comes after they finish dancing with the stars.  Maybe the clue they receive says pick out a van and driver (we see some parked behind the dance arena, I think) and drive to ......... who knows......... and do........who knows.

My spec:

U-turn: the chicken task; it's an extra task; when they're done, come back and do the detour
Roadblock: the bicycle task; Jenn is solo; it's her turn to do it; they alternate every leg
Detour: American Idol or Gold Digging

I'm liking banzai's idea the best. I can't see why whathisface would be able to help gramps with the Roadblock so it very well could be the other detour option.

People say that we will be going Guinea-Bissau
Evidence: plane with G-B flag

please look for this evidence :)

qing_her, I might normally say that the idea of Guinea-Bissau is preposterous. However, given a Sunday flight connection in Dakar, it's not. Teams could go OUA DKR on 2J (Air Burkina) 338 1345 1740 and connect to V7 350 DKR OXB (Bissau) 1830 1930

It could have happened. However, that means that teams finished up whatever tasks they did in Burkina Faso by late morning on Sunday and before going to Guinea-Bissau.  Also, the flights out to Europe require departure from Bissau to Dakar at 1345 on July 16 to catch AF731 (the one from OUA) at 2350 arriving CDG at 0610 on the 17th. It can't be a day later or the first teams can't get through Florence and on their way to Dubrovnik in time to arrive when we know they do. If teams arrive inot Bissau at 1930, they would be doing all tasks in the dark and then having a pitstop by midnight to make that flight(unless it was a TBC). If Bissau is a TBC, then after waiting around in Burkina Faso for such a long time, it would be one screwed up leg, later finishing in Florence. So, my conclusion is that it is highly unlikely that it did happen.

EDITOR'S NOTE - this last paragraph has been substantially revised with the benefit of more after sleeping on it and later revised again.

Thanks--your pics aren't so big fuzzy blooby as mine!

Gold mining in BF is a very hot topic right now. I have been reading the Google Alerts on that for weeks and there is lots to know. Basically, they have just opened up a mine (but I think it is northern BF?) and have high hopes that this will improve the country's economic future significantly.

This is a  nice blog  (http://www.voiceinthedesert.org.uk/keith/archives/2006/01/gold_in_the_mid.html) about the impact of the gold mining. I think the newest mine has just opened. (open pit mine I think).

How about this as part of the Roadblock? Find certain leaves and deliver? just grasping at straws
Search for leaves for sauces (sorrel, "boulvanka"), dry leaves, gather beans, harvest peas, peanuts and corn and shuck corn, harvest gombo
Search for and dry leaves, gather beans, harvest gombo, peas, peanuts, harvest millet

Actually, the information I have about gold mining in Burkina Faso is how the one mine that was operating closed due to being uneconomic. It is at Poura, Bale province in the western part of BurKina Faso near Bobo Dioulasso.

Trust me, I have been reading all the European market reports on this for weeks...

I don't know if this helps or not, but ...

 http://www.etruscan.com/s/BurkinaFaso.asp  (http://www.etruscan.com/s/BurkinaFaso.asp)

The Youga Gold Mine is located approximately four kilometers north of the Ghanaian border and 180 kilometers southwest of Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso on the 80 kilometer Youga Gold Belt.

As of October, 2007, construction of the Youga Gold Mine has progressed significantly and the project is now on schedule for plant commissioning to commence December 2007.

Here is a July update: http://www.afrol.com/articles/26115 of another one, but I think the largest just opened? I know that the gold mines, the July flood, and the World Bank loan have been the major news articles I have been reading daily ever since we heard about BF. Of course I just emptied my Trash folder with all this in it...

Here's one!http://www.reuters.com/article/companyNewsAndPR/idUSL1890692120070718  but trust me--there have been just as many news releases on this as there have been banks wanting to send me a trunk full of cash! :lol3:

Well it doesn't look all that fancy, the gold mining place that is.

fwiw~ (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/show/CTVShows/20071120/ruiz_elimination_071120/20071120/)

CTV.ca: What team did you end up getting closest with on the race?

Julia: Lorena and Jason. We really clicked with them from the beginning. There were never any hard feelings between us.

The place that our guys are mining may be a fake seeded by production site. But I do remember reading about locals who would go out digging for gold and how the open pit mines would take away that option for improving their lives--so maybe there really are that many gold nuggets lying around!

I think its per webclue Gman, Detour first then the Roadblock, Jennifer/Shana are probably at the Roadblock with Rachel & TK and Jennifer must be the one that fears the karma coming back to bite them after U-Turning Lorena/Jason and is talking to TK about it.

A new wrinkle in the Race causes friction between two Teammates as one fears a target has been painted on their backs and karma will bite them from behind.

What evidence zack? I don't know of any evidence? Last week we thought the same and look what happened, lol. Really I don't know, but am treating this leg as a elimination but who knows? When the eliminated team was set to appear on the Early Show it was telling but since it seems they are not doing that anymore its hard to say either way.

Didn't someone say that it was Jennifer doing the bike bit?  That the blondes alternated taking turns doing the roadblock and it was Jenns turn?  If so, why is she standing there talking to TK?  Or is Shana actually doing the block?

We need more video clues!!

Gosh--look! Chateau can figure it out even during a MONSOON! :lol3:

Then we have the sisters saying they were out there with the camels about 4 hours and arrived 1.3 minutes after J/Lorena so....

Hmmm...I don't think they'll be turning them loose in Bingo at 10:15 PM--so what gives?

Early train--train one-two hours (heard somewhere in one of the vids) + tasks--okay 10:15 could work...

Will they have an H of Op? Vans not there till AM--pull a #--go back to sleep--or is this another 36 hour pitstop?  They aren't going to be wandering Bingo at night! :o

And I don't think they'll be driving at night either...

Also, the Mat Chats reveal that the last team, Lorena & Jason, took 2.5 hours to milk the camel.

So I would just guess that they check in around 12:15 pm.

Leg 4 should begin in darkness (10 pm to nidnightish) but, as we know, they like to start african legs in the light.  Maybe they wait until sunrise or maybe they leave on time and get to choose from spare-tire-clad taxis like TAR5.    :o

http://www.gonomad.com/destinations/0704/burkina-faso.html

:umn:

Wow....that would be an amazing task.  No wonder the goats & sheep were running away from those crazy tourists in the last episode.

& Texas Lady is a fabulous writer.   :jam:

I doubt it!  If gold nuggets were just "lying around" they would have been scooped up long ago!  And an open mine operation is just one huge hole in the ground.  This looks like a recreation of an old-fashioned panning for gold stunt.  Probably seeded by production if that; in reality prospectors could be panning for gold in one location for weeks without finding a thing!

On the Camel time.

Jason stated 2 1/2 hours to milk.  Marianna & Jennifer said they spent 4 plus hours with the camels.

This very well might include the camel walk.  Because they admit that they got lost in both that section and looking for the school.

As did Lorena & Jason, who I believe say they went 2 to 3 miles in the wrong direction.

So considering the rain storm was about 40 minutes and that it occurred while they both were still milking (camels wouldn't milk during the storm) and that the storm happened as Hendekea & Azaria ware going to the Pit Stop.  I think it would be safe to assume that they are very possibly 3 hours behind.  And I would guess about an 2 and a half behind that main pack of 5 teams.

I will be out of the RFF action for most of the next 144 hours, basking in sunshine in the Caribbean. For the remainder of episode 4, it does not look like I am needed. For episode 5, remember what took place under Napoleon: All roads (or flights in the modern version) lead to Paris. This is particularly true from West Africa, as they seldom go anywhere else in Europe. The route to Florence is through Charles de Gaulle airport.

Here is your NFL Coverage Map (http://www.the506.com/nflmaps/2007-12-CBS2.html) for this Sunday for the two late games on CBS. If one game ends early, CBS will go to the other game so the Eastern and Central time zones can start together.

Expect TAR to start at 8:20 p.m. at the earliest.
Thinks for the link and the update.

Oh maybe I was close!? they might have to collect ingredients? and or other items?

Nope. Aside from the logistic nightmare and financial bind (with flights) it provides, it doesn't make any sense. Why go from West Africa all the way to India, only to backtrack to Europe for 3 legs (at least)?

Perhaps the RB is to collect a bunch of items for different people, like a scavenger hunt. It would certainly be easier then some of the African roadblocks (both South African legs come to mind, especially TAR 7).

Thanks puddin for the new clip!

I am thinking they have to complete some sort of a shopping list which requires them to navigate the market. (Didn't Gretchen have to do something similar?)  So far I can see the cloth pieces which are used as skirts/turbans/baby slings draped over the handlebars (kangas in Kenya but don't know what they are called here), the leaves, some sort of box tied to Vyxsin's back wheel, and more so it must be quite a list!

I wish we could spot the market! It isn't Koudougou--that one is new. Ouagadougou not possible as  this seems more rural. I guess Bobo is the same--and if they don't go there--then they won't be feeding their chickens to the fishies either.

So we need a rural market right off a road--If we could find this market... Would Bingo--a town of only 2000--be able to support such a market? I think they are somewhere else.

Places it isn't:  Ouagadougou market:

What do we have?

DETOUR:  (Shake it) or (Pan it)

ROADBLOCK:  Find items in the market to make some kind of local meal.  Must use the bike to get around and then deliver the goods

QUESTION:  Chicken, who has the chicken?  Part of the meal to be?

QUESTION:  Where?  Bingo or return to Ouagadougou?

QUESTION:  Philimination or TBC?

CBS is being pretty skimpy with clues this week.

Okay! I have changed my mind!

Instead of going to Bobo to Dafra to feed the chicken to a catfish--I now believe that our poor doomed chicken may be going to SABOU village to meet up with a sacred crocodile!!

(http://aycu22.webshots.com/image/35661/2000891102239707785_rs.jpg) (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2000891102239707785)

This  article  (http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Burkina-Faso/blog-2927.html) fills you in!

Quote
'you arrive, you're assailed by kids from whom you buy a live chicken at a sacrificial price, it's fed to a croc which lumbers out of the water and photos are taken of you, them and, grinning the widest, the croc'. So, prepared for a real tourist trap we tentatively drove into town - but where were the kids assailing us with their live chickens? I think we must have picked a very quiet day because it was all we could do to find one guide. We duly paid our money, the guide went off to get the sacrificial live chicken (I didn't think the chicken would really be alive, but alas it was) and we followed him to the edge of the lake, cameras in hand. They did a bit of taunting and dangling of dead chicken parts, just to get the crocs interested
I'm terrified, honest!
and lo and behold before we knew it there were about 4 or 5 basking on the edge of the lake. We were busy watching & snapping the mummy croc and her babies - or snapping their snapping jaws which were pretty awesome, when a big old grandfather croc shot out of the water and slyly took the live chicken in one mouthful, when everyone's backs were turned. Busy filming with the camcorder, I let out an almighty scream and turned my journalistic attention to the ghoulish matter of filming the poor chickens last seconds, of which I am not at all proud! We then did the obligatory pics of me and croc and Neil and croc (hope to be loading some piccys tomorrow folks) before we departed. We met, quite by chance, an english woman and her french partner who had bought some land from the chief of the local village and were busy setting up a campsite for travellers on the edge of the lake. It was in its very early stages, otherwise we would have spent the night, but it was fascinating to learn from her all about the special relationship the villagers enjoyed with the crocodiles.
Live action shot!
We were astonished at how close the local kids were playing to the lake and she explained that the crocodiles had never been known to harm any of the villagers and that was why they, in turn, continued with the live sacrifices.

Pros: Crocodiles are more fun than catfish--and you get to sit on them!

It is MUCH closer to Bingo and eventually Ouagadougou for the flight out.

And this is located in the HOUNDE DISTRICT which has gold mines! (http://www.etruscan.com/s/BurkinaFaso.asp).

You can see Sabou just SW of Bingo on the map...

I like that idea--I'd like to see Phil holding chickens! :luvu:

Okay--Speedbump==something to slow you down...Have we ever had teams receive a 10 minute penalty during a task before?? They have had to repeat it for doing it wrong, had to go to the back of the line...but a penalty??

U Turn I always thought was going to be do BOTH Detours....but here we see L/J doing something else entirely...

Which do we think the racers dole out? Does the U-turn take the place of the yield??
Title: Re: EP4: "Let's Name Our Chicken Phil"
Post by: puddin on November 25, 2007, 04:05:11 PM
I thought the yield is not to be anymore, the new twists U-Turn Speed Bump takes its place.
Title: Re: EP4: "Let's Name Our Chicken Phil"
Post by: georgiapeach on November 25, 2007, 04:22:52 PM
Well that's what we all THINK anyway... but we haven't heard the rules for sure right?

If we hadn't heard the LA Blondes/Jason comments I would think this whole chicken thing was a fast forward!

But if U-Turn is turn around go back and do the detour again or do both detours--then this isn't a U-turn.

Speedbump--if this is speedbump then it means do another different task...

And who do you think does the roadblock for :

Ron/Christina
Don/Nicholas

And what are TK/Rachel more likely to do: Dance or DIG?

I found this from Google's cache:  http://www.lefaso.net/article.php3?id_article=3196

In the tourist landscape of BURKINA FASO, one finds a quite curious site: the pond with the crowned crocodiles of Sabou. Sabou is a village, place chief of department located at 80 km in the south of capital OUAGADOUGOU, on axis OUAGA-BOBO in the province of Boulkiemdé. In the pond that this city shelters, live naturally dangerous but curiously inoffensive sauriens even flexible. The visitors who go to Sabou can see them on the bank or with the assistance of young people who make their business of them. Thanks to a chicken, they attract the crocodiles on the shore. One can then devote oneself to meetings of catch of sights with the possibility of going up on them if it is wished. The operation at most costs two thousand franks CFA (2000 CFA) to the visitors. The pond with the crocodiles of Sabou is very appraisal of the tourists who arrive at Burkina Faso. The famous musician jamaïcain JIMMY CLIFF even turned there of the sequences of his film "Bongo man". It would be tiresome to quote the names of the celebrities who came ressourcer or to change the ideas near these famous crocodiles. But how these crocodiles did arrive in these places?

Translated with BabelFish so it probably is a little off.

This would be about 50 miles from Ouagadougou I believe.

Thinking about it, a speed bump would be a slow down. You can't speed over one or trouble follows. A U-Turn for me would be either I missed a location or I have to turn back to get to a location.

NO Gman I'd be crying, lol. And to answer your other question our witness saw a check in sheet at the Detour while TK/Rachel were doing the Detour and the Goths were already checked off as in already been there done that with the blondes being not the same as the Goths but blonde and female, lol.

One more time!!

There is NO photographic evidence of a F/F team in Dubrovnik.

Our source DOES believe that she saw a F/F blonde team there (but remember she was at some points watching from a great distance so it could be hard to be sure.)

The F/F team (if seen) was definitely NOT confused with Kynt/Vyxsin as she saw the production sheet that had already checked the Goths through.

Okay?  :carryon:

That's right--tasks on 7/15--then PITSTOP--so leave on 7/16--remember apskip says only one flight out to CDG and it is evening so arr Vilnius on 7/17.

Technically it would then seem feasible to squeeze in Florence on the 18th but I thought apskip said somewhere the flights can't work that way? Off to look...

I have had some PM dialogue with Peach on the subject of whether a Africa to  Vilnius to Florence to Dubrovnik routing or Africa to Florence to Vilnius to Dubrovnik routing can make sense. The answer to both questions is NO. Here's why for the first question. The same logic was worked out for the second case and it proved even less close on timing:

1. AF735 arrives CDG 610am July 17
2. First reasonable connection is at 800am on AF1340 to AMS, connecting there with TE461 to VNO arriving at 1325.
3. Teams then have all of afternoon and evening of July 17 in Vilnius to complete tasks.
4. Earliest possible departure would be at maybe 730am on July 18 to Florence. TE470 departs VNO 0735 to CDG, connecting to AF5036 arriving FLR 1405.
5. Teams have the rest of the afternoon and evening to do tasks in Florence. It doesn't  matter whether it is a TBC or pitstop. They are not going to DBV until tasks are done. There is no way that the first group can arrive at 1405 and depart at 1725 even though with a TBC the second or third groups could indeed make it. The precise times are as shown in my master TIMELINE post. NOTE: the reason the first group has to depart by 1725 is that is the latest time they can connect through Milan and Zagreb arriving at 1030 on July 19, which corresponds well with actual observation of when they got to town

I have to conclude that there can be no Africa to Vilnius to Florence routing because there just isn't sufficient time. That means there will be an extended pit stop somewhere, I would guess Florence rather than Burkina Faso. I would also guess that the separation of teams has to occur somewhere and it won't be coming out of Africa with only one flight each 24 hours. The tasks in Florence have to involve major opportunities to get ahead and behind, like FAST FORWARD and UTURN and SPEED BUMP.

I am curious what the hell type of Pit Stop they took between episodes 3 and 4.  It can't be a 12 hour Pit Stop.  It can't be a 24 hour Pit Stop.

Do they ever take Pit Stops at like 16 or 18 hours of length?

Puddin (and Peach).   I disagree on the dates for at least the 3rd leg in Bingo.  Teams fly to Burkina Faso on the 12th and arrive on the 12th.  The next morning of the 13th is when they arrive in Bingo and start those tasks.

I would then assume (though we don't have a standard Pit Stop), that they do leg four on the 14th.

If I am right that would give you an extra day to get to Florence, eventually.

Unless I don't know what the hell I am talking about.

According to our missionaries, that flight was for sure On FRI July 13th...

dance the night away--tasks 14th--1st pitstop --tasks 15th --2nd pitstop---dep for Lithuania eve of the 16th because that is the ONLY flight.

Looks like a 18 - 20 hour pit stop.

I remember this happening in previous seasons.  Makes sense since I'm sure they wanted all tasks to be completed before nightfall.  Also it ensures all teams will be on the ONE flight out of Burkina the next day.

hound <-----loves the chickens & goats, but wishes a charter to Timbuktu could have been squeezed in.   :plane: :ele:

Another random question.  When is the last time an episode hasn't had any built in equilizers (whether they worked or not)?

I honestly don't have a clue.

There were several legs in season 9 that people complained about lack of equilizers.  But in those legs they did have equilizers but due to things like computer failure in Russia and driver error the next leg, the teams weren't fully equilized.

Reality Show Meets Reality in Burkina Faso during The Amazing Race

The people of Burkina Faso are known for their friendliness. So it is no wonder that they would stand by politely and hand-out clues to Americans in the "reality" The Amazing Race. In one of the poorest countries in the world, where the average annual income per person is less than a racer's ticket from Amsterdam to Ouagadaugau, the most amazing thing about this show is the irony of the contrast between the racers and their surroundings. World in Need, Inc., is launching their new web site this week featuring thousands of children throughout the world and hundreds from Burkina Faso - looking for an opportunity to improve their lives, not just for a few days but permanently!"

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) November 28, 2007 -- The people of Burkina Faso are a proud, yet kind people - descendants of a warrior empire that lasted over 800 years. They are also known for their optimism amidst adversity, friendliness and hospitality. So it is no wonder that they would stand by politely and hand-out clues to Americans in a 'reality' TV show called The Amazing Race. In one of the poorest countries in the world, where the average annual income per person is less than a racer's ticket from the previous episode in Amsterdam to Ouagadaugau, the capital of Burkina Faso, the most amazing thing about this show is the irony of the contrast between the racers and their surroundings.

In Episode 3 last week, a girl is having a hard time milking a camel and is clearly distraught. The poor, hobbled camel is also having a hard time as she pokes, prods and grabs its sensitive nipples to get that elusive milk. In other scenes, race participants are struggling to drink the camel's milk! The irony is that 40,000 people in Burkina Faso are still struggling to find food after floods destroyed their crops just a few short months ago. That milk could have fed several children. World in Need, through their new website, is helping the hungry children in Burkina Faso , providing food, clothing, medical supplies and other assistance through local community organizations.

Later in the show, the participants must learn some of the native language at a local schoolhouse. It's all very exciting and challenging, until you notice that this schoolhouse is really just a broken down shanty. Water is leaking from what looks like a rusty metal roof that is falling down (in the top middle of this photo). The dirt floor is covered with a pool of water. The desks the racers and school children are sitting at are just slabs of rough-hewn boards. World in Need works with local communities to provide school supplies where needed...and when needed they even help build the schools.

The Amazing Race can be just the beginning of a new beginning for Burkina Faso
In last Sunday's episode, the teams seemed to take a little more notice of their surroundings. One team, Kynt and Vyxsin, seemed to make the connection more than the others. You have to give the show credit for including this scene at the end of the show. The young "goths" mentioned how everyone made them feel welcome and then, with tears in her eyes, Vyxsin said, "It's heartbreaking to see such wonderful people having to live with so little."

In this impoverished country, The Amazing Race was ultimately a bright, if not too brief, ray of sunshine. The local people at least enjoyed a little extra income and probably quite a bit of entertainment as well. But no doubt the entertainment value of the show has long since worn off, and the money that the film crew brought with them didn't last very long. The problems in Burkina Faso won't go away in just a week. They're systemic, and need long-term commitment for a real solution.

World in Need, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, has been working with local community leaders in Burkina Faso to do just that. According to Warren Goff, Director of World in Need, their new web site being launched this week (http://www.winkids.org) features thousands of children throughout the world - over 300 from poor families and orphanages in Burkina Faso - looking for an opportunity to improve their lives, not just for a few days but permanently! "The Amazing Race can be just the beginning of a new beginning for Burkina Faso," said Warren. "With everyone's help, we can continue what the race just started." When that happens, the real winners of The Amazing Race will be the children and families of Burkina Faso.
