Title: Foreign Reality Shows
Post by: Kilarney on May 09, 2007, 12:41:19 PM
I just got a DVD player that makes it very easy to watch downloaded content on my television.  (Just burn the file (.avi, xvid, divx)  to a CD, and pop it in the player.)

So here is the question....

Any good foreign reality shows out there?
I've downloaded the Amazing Race Asia a while ago.
I've also just downloaded The Apprentice U.K.
It doesn't look like Survivor UK is available as a torrent anymore.
Space Cadets looks to still be available - although just barely.

Anyone know of any good foreign (but English language) reality shows that are available on bittorrent?
I'm not really sure that I can stomach a foreign "Big Brother" or "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here."

How about ones that are coming up?  (The UK has one about overweight kids dropped into the Australian outback that looks pretty good.)

I was just about to recommend Big Brother UK, but I guess it's too hot for you to handle, lol.  Try Shipwrecked.  I don't know if that is available as a torrent, but I hear it's a good show.

I'd recommend Big Brother. Oddly enough I have a program similar to yours. I just picked it up and I can now watch my BBUK on my TV. I'm stoked!

It's the time commitment that scares me from Big Bro Uk.

I'm downloading Space Cadets right now.  The torrent is barely alive, so it will take awhile.  It looks like a funny concept, though.

Jeff, what is this program that you're talking about?

For me it's not a program, it's a new DVD player that I bought.  It was $50.  I burn the files to a CD-R, and pop it into the DVD player.  The DVD player has a built in chip for this stuff, and plays pretty much anything that I throw at it.  It plays DIVX, XVID, WMA, etc.  You don't have to worry about burning DVDs or VCDs, which makes it really easy.  You just burn the data file onto the CD-R.

The only problem that I can foresee is if an individual file is larger than 700mb.  I should probably look for a program that will split a large video file into two smaller files.  For TV shows, though, this really isn't an issue.

Gimme!  I want one now.  I'll have to search for one of them next time I go to the mall.  If it's only $50, then I'm getting it!  At the rate that I burn TV shows on DVDs, this would come in handy!

I'll look up the software when I get home. I forget what brand it was. Essentially, it lets me turn any avi, mpg or other video file into a dvd format when I burn it to disk. Comes in handy. Especially since I have a DVD R/W and a several disks so I can keep burning over them.

The player I bought was the Phillips DVP5140.  It was on sale at Radio Shack for $50.  I think the sale ends in a couple of days.  It can probably be had for slightly cheaper online, although maybe not from a well known merchant.

I have been really impressed with the player.  It has played whatever I throw at it.  I only have a CD burner, which is why this player works really well for me.  I suppose the risk is that someday, as technology changes, it won't be able to play the data files directly.  But by then I will have a DVD burner, so it won't be a big deal.

To save a lot of money, you can burn the data file to a DVD.  Therefore, one DVD could hold a TON of shows.  The Phillips player will play the data files straight off of the DVD.

I didn't want to mention it earlier since I didn't want to sound like I was shilling for Phillips.  (I have no relation to them.)

I have not tried using CD-RWs. although I can't imagine that this would be a problem.

I have a Radioshack about a mile away from where I live.  I think I'll look it up online and see what other deals I can get.  Thanks, Kilarney!

You guys will definitely be wanting one of these for BBUK8!! This is how I watch all my Survivor, TAR, ANTM, BBUSA, Hell's Kitchen, Biggest Loser (not to mention Lost, Heroes, Ugly Betty, Boston Legal, Scrubs, etc etc...!)

No need to convert the files, just drop them onto a CD (or preferably a DVD) as they are and watch away! I bought my first one expressly so I could watch BBUSA6!

My latest player even has an SD card slot so I just drag the files onto a 2GB SD card and off we go!

As for Space Cadets, sounded great - but the execution was pretty crap. I never actually figured out whether to believe that the guys who were supposedly in the space training camp really did believe they were there, or whether they were all actors (bad ones at that!)

Good UK reality shows... hmm, you could try Shipwrecked, that's not bad, although a lot of this year's contestants are quite annoying! We have a lot of 'American Idol' / 'Grease is the Word' type things over here, with amateurs or UK celebs singing and trying not to get voted out. I'd steer clear of these unless you really like that kind of thing!

Sadly Survivor UK never really caught on, although the 2 series that were made were pretty good. I also hear that Australian Celebrity Survivor is worth watching but I haven't seen it yet myself.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through Space Cadets.

It's a brilliant concept.  The problem is that they dragged it out for WAAAAAY too long.

The host explains the concept literally 20 times per episode.

Too bad, because you can see that the show really has potential.  I'm hoping it gets picked up in the USA to see another attempt at it.

Space Cadets is a British show (Channel 4) with an interesting concept.  A group of civilians are chosen to be Britain's first televised space tourists.  The catch... it's all fake.  Channel 4 created a fake Russian air base at an abandoned air base in Great Britain.  Inside of this base, they created a fake Russian space vehicle using the latest in Hollywood special effects.  The premise of the show is to see if they can get the "crew" to sit in the space vehicle for 5 days thinking that it is real.  (I haven't gotten to the "launch" yet, as most of the show covers their training.)

It's a hilarious concept, and had the makings of a great show.  The problem is that there just isn't a whole lot of entertainment so far.  The people are buying it hook-line-and-sinker - so you're really just watching a bunch of space training.  They throw in the occasional preposterous premise (e.g.; There will be a "gravity" machine on board the spacecraft) - but most of it is pretty slow paced.  Everybody is getting along, and sitting through training.  (Yawn.)  Not the most entertaining television.

Most of the entertainment so far has been watching the hoax being staged.  For example, they flew the cadets around Great Britain for 3.5 hours, when they really thought that they were flying to Russia.  The actors playing the Russians can be pretty funny as well.

The host is pretty terrible, and the "satellite shows" are pretty much a waste of time.  (In the "satellite show", a bunch of experts and a celebrity or two sit around and talk about the show.)

It's worth a watch - but it didn't live up to its potential.
