Title: Survivor 15 China
Post by: puddin on April 13, 2007, 04:19:34 PM
Next on Survivor: Did Someone Order Chinese?
Yeah, yeah, Fiji just started, but are you ready for some scoop about the next edition of Survivor? How about Survivor: China? TV Guide hears there's a very strong possibility that the show's 15th cycle will head out to the world's most populous country this summer.

Should it come to pass, a key difference will be that if a rival alliance decides to take you out, there will be at least a 30-minute wait.

There have been rumors floating around that S15 may film in China. I was watching Craig Ferguson
the other night and Jeff was the guest and he said they were looking into filming in a more "exotic" location , some place without palm trees.

I can't imagine survivor any where else but a beach setting! I think they should just stick with the same formula...it works. As long as they have a lot of interesting twists and an awesome cast the show should be fine.

I did enjoy seasons without the typical beach setting.  For example, Africa and Amazon.  Both I am still waiting for the DVDs.
 :knuckles:
Bring on China!  That would make a great season!

Reality show "Survivor" filming in China: report
Today at 9:33 am

http://tv.yahoo.com/news/article/urn:newsml:tv.reuters.com:20070418:survivor_dc__ER:1;_ylt=AkZfMAR43EZzQ0sY.tIrVAP6o9EF

The next edition of "Survivor" will be filmed in China, making the reality show the first American network TV production to shoot an entire series in the communist nation, trade paper Daily Variety reported on Wednesday.

The report did not say when CBS would begin production on the 14th cycle of the castaway saga, or where in China the action would be set.

The CBS Corp. unit is airing "Survivor: Fiji," which is averaging about 15.8 million viewers, on par with the viewership for the previous installment, "Survivor: Cook Islands."

Daily Variety said the move to China takes the series away from an island setting for the first time since 2003's sixth installment, which was set in the Amazon jungle, and that the China locale should boost the show's international appeal.

China is a difficult place to film because of logistical and government restrictions. Last year's Warner Bros. period drama "The Painted Veil" was filmed there in partnership with the Chinese government, which had final say over the finished product and objected to several scenes. This led to tense negotiations between Chinese officials and the film's star, Edward Norton, and director, John Curran.

Seems to be confirmed!

CBS, 'Survivor' go to China
By JOSEF ADALIAN

CBS has booked China as the location for the next edition of "Survivor," and locked in premiere dates for two key summer reality shows -- including Mark Burnett's "Pirate Master."

Production of U.S. entertainment projects in mainland China had been rare, due to logistical and government restrictions. But with a growing economy, China has begun a more open policy, including its active wooing to host the 2008 Beijing Olympics. While bigscreen features, such as the 2006 "The Painted Veil," forged new ground by filming completely in China, CBS's lensing of an entire series is a precedent for an American network.

The China setting should also boost "Survivor's" appeal to overseas auds. Skein airs in numerous countries around the world.

The move to China for the 14th edition takes the skein away from an island setting for the first time since the sixth installment, set in the Amazon jungle.

The distribution maps for snow leopards (http://www.snowleopardconservancy.org/pics/rangemap.jpg) and giant pandas (http://www.wwfchina.org/english/pandacentral/images/wwfatwork/survey/map.jpg) puts it somewhere in Sichuan or Yunnan. Tigers don't fit in that well, but here's the range map (http://www.felidtag.org/pages/educational/factsheets/maps%5Ctigermap.jpg) anyway. I've had no luck searching for "sacred mountain" with the province names (nothing that would match the caps anyway); who knows, the whole passage could be just a fancy way of referring to the whole of China itself.

The filming locales, and base camp should be around 40 km (24 miles) from the capital of Nanchang.
This fits in (so far) with Poyang. As far as GE goes, just search for Nanchang, China then look to the northeast. That big mess of water is the lake; some more info is available if you enable web content in GE.

So I read something here at SurvivorMaps (http://www.claycritters.com/map/s15/survivor_15_map.htm) about a lake called Zhelin and have been taking a closer look.

After looking all over Poyang lake--I can't believe that that would be the lake chosen. It seems to be way too popular and too much on the tourist circuit to work--I found lots of tour boats going up and down the lake. Seems like in the heart of summer that it would be way too hard to keep a secret there. And apparently the level of the lake can vary by as much as a third depending on the time of year and rainfall which would make it a little difficult to plan.

Far more off the beaten track is Zhelin Lake (it is confusing becase it is also called Che-lin and in some places Sanxiqiao). It is west of the Lu mountains but still close enough to be "considered in the "shadow of a sacred mountain". And I can't find any "tourist" info on it at all--which would be a very good point if you are production and want to keep a secret. I think it is a reservoir created when a Dam flooded an area. From GE there are lots of hidden corners that would allow for privacy.

And then there is this:
Quote
Rare Peach Jellyfish

Recently people have spotted the peach jellyfish, a rare biological species over the water surface of Dinosaur Island of Zhelin Lake, Jiangxi Province. As is verified and confirmed by Hangzhou Institute of Biology, the peach jellyfish is a very ancient living creature, belonging to jellyfish coelenterate, or a small community under polypite class of cnidophore phylum. Unlike the ordinary jellyfish, the peach jellyfish lives in fresh water, which makes it an extremely rare species. It is briefed that the peach jellyfish has a living history of 1.5 billion years and is as precious as the panda. Before this, peach jellyfish was only seen at Zigui of the Three Gorges area.

Here is the GE view and the Dam at the end of the lake.

Woohoo! Zhelin Lake (http://www.meijumi.com/article.asp?id=861) it is!

A bad translation follows...

The fifteenth season of Survivor (Survivor: China) will be filmed in Zhelin Lake of Jiujiang, Jiangxi. This region is also known as the Thousand Island Lake of Jiangxi. :groan:

Here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=%E5%8D%97%E6%98%8C&ie=UTF8&ll=29.242671,115.333099&spn=0.488899,0.925598&t=k&z=10&om=1) is a Google image of Zhelin Lake (looks like a dragon). The local government is pretty smart, this is a great promotion opportunity!

Introduction to Zhelin Lake

Zhelin Lake is a freshwater lake formed by the construction of Asia's largest concrete
(?) dam, the Great Zhelin Dam.

It is located in the northwestern corner of Jiangxi's Yongxiu County, 40km away from Nanchang. It's bounded 90km to the north by the world-famous Lushan, making it a superb location. Transportation is convenient, with Changjiu Expressway, the Jingjiu Railway, Changbei Airport and Routes 106 and 306 within 30-minute driving distance.

Zhelin Lake has a rich and unique biodiversity, and has been acclaimed as a "rare treasure".

The lake covers 308km² of crystal clear water, and its average depth is 45m. With one being able to see nine miles across the lake, it is nationally classified as a First Class Water Body. Thousands of islands dot the lake, with 997 of them over five [Chinese] acres. In addition to that are the uncountable smaller islands, the lush vegetation, the lagoons and the mountain peaks.

Searching Google (http://images.google.com.sg/images?hl=en&q=%E6%9F%98%E6%9E%97%E6%B9%96&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi) turned up these images, and here's (http://www.jjxsjlxs.com) the official site.

Here's my 2 cents.

By matching the mountain profile shown in this shot with what I get in GE I have a possible location for the place where the shot was taken at Zhelin Lake.  Also, the shot was probably taken in the early morning when lake waters are still and glass like.  The increased illuminance on the left of the shot (sunrise) suggests that the direction of the shot was to the south.

Forget about matching the shapes of the islands on GE   :groan:

Any difference in the dam's water level when the satellite image was taken would result in different shaped islands.

I don't think filming will be 3 months, usually, crew arrives many weeks in advance to setup things like TC, start challenges, and stuff like that, and then stay a few weeks after to clean up. That could account for 3 months, not all filming, but a lot of buzz around because it takes quite a few people??

Watch the show prove me wrong! LOL

Houses in 59 towns were wrecked by the floods, which caused an economic loss of nearly 100 million yuan ($13 million), following heavy rains across most of Jiangxi between Thursday and Sunday.

"The floods have caused casualties and evacuations of residents in some areas, but the exact number has yet to be counted," Xinhua quoted a local official as saying.

Poor fish. I'd give it a go, I guess?

15TH SEASON OF AMERICAN SERIES "SURVIVOR" BEGINS PRODUCTION ON JIUJIANG'S ZHELIN LAKE
Jiujiang News Network (Yu Zhuanjian reporting) 2007-06-15 19:05:16

Known as the pioneer of American reality television, the series "Survivor" begin production of its fifteenth season on the morning of June 15th, on the shores of Jiujiang's Zhelin Lake. This is America's first attempt at filming an entire series in China. Production will be based mainly at Lujiao (Deerhorn) Point on Zhelin Lake, but the filming area stretches up to Yangzhou in Wuning County.

Executive producer Doug McCallie notes, "We wish to bring the beautiful scenery of Jiujiang to our worldwide audience. Jiujiang is breathtaking!" The 480+ crew arrived in Jiujiang early this April, beginning three months of production. All actors [sic, or is it?] are American, and while the fifteenth season still revolves around the theme of "survival", it also focuses on everyday people "stepping into nature". [Huh?] The fifteenth season is estimated to cost Y300 000 000 [USD40 000 000], and the show's biggest draw is that it uses neither director nor script, relying instead on real people's reactions to real challenges, an aspect no Hollywood film can bring to the screen. [Going off-topic?]

Ratings have been phenomenal since "Survivor" begin airing in 2000, drawing 70 000 000 viewers from America alone. [Huh?] It has caused summer box-office receipts in America to drop dramatically [B:)], and started a wave of reality television shows sweeping around the world. [Heck, more hyperbole, I'm stopping here.]

Photo captions:
1. Group photo of the city council, production crew and chief of Promotion Board Feng Jing [Babelfish! Are you sure "promotion" translates into "propaganda"? Oh wait maybe it does.]
2. Executive producer Doug McCallie announces the beginning of production
3. A city council representative, chief of Promotion Board Feng Jing and executive producer Doug McCallie cutting a roasted pig to celebrate the beginning of production [old tradition]
4. Production crew taking part in a ceremonial ritual [another old filming tradition]
5. Discussion amongst friends from China and beyond

Those figures look like the Terracotta Army ones.

And I would say that the temple is a match--but the trees don't seem right? Could they have moved it into place? ???

Wow, that is interesting, puddin.  I wonder if the survivors will have a challenge or something significant at this site...maybe towards the end of the show, since the archer statue is a sole survivor!  Guess we'll find out!

WOW! They are doing an incredible job copying the warriors! I think I feel an archery competition coming on....

I loved it when TAR went to the Terracotta Warrior site --that is something I would so love to see myself!

Heres a Jill (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=9161323), she says that she got to spend a night at the Wall, lucky girl!

remember that Jeff says in the tv guide (http://www.tvguide.com/news/070820-01) article:

The CBS show, which has been granted unprecedented access to some of China's greatest sites including the Shaolin Temple and the Great Wall, goes Chinese all the way.

It says in  this article  (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/survivor_china/2007_Sep_10_food_kidnapping) that a visit to the Great Wall is a REWARD. It also mentions starvation and kidnapping.
