UshuaiaSighter (http://p085.ezboard.com/fsurvivorsucksfrm23.showMessageRange?topicID=7265.topic&start=1413&stop=1420) posted (11/28/06 )@ sucks at 5:13 pm.
*Hi to all. I'm doing a trip through South America and I'm now in Ushuaia, Argentina (southern most city in the world).
*About an hour ago Bill and Joe (Team Guido) entered an internet cafe/calling center (locutorio) with a cameraman and a soundman. They wanted to call a few airlines (Aerolinas Argentinas and South African Airlines). I guess they are heading to South Africa then.Sorry for the quality of the pictures. I was in a rush and the cameraman was intimidating! "
--------------------------------------------------
*Hi, me again. A few more informations:
The locutario where the pics were taken was at the corner of 25 de Mayo and San Martin in Ushuaia. It was taken at about 19h15 Ushuaia time (17h15 NYC). The sunset here is at about 22h15.
*The girl is definetly not Emily. Sorry guys. It was just a Fern.
It still takes a long time to get to Antarctica from Ushuaia, by boat at least (a few days). So if they went to Antartica, it was by small planes.
I spent the last 2 days around town and haven't seen anybody else. I also went to most of the landmarks in Ushuaia yesterday evening to try to find a pitstop, detour or roadblock, without sucess. And Ushuaia is not a big town, so I guess they just stopped in town to call. The others might have gone straight to the airport. Bill and Joe probably arrived by bus because the buses around here drop you at the corner of Maipu and 25 de Mayo. The locutario they were in would be the first you see after being dropped from a bus. So I guess the pitstop was eather in the Tierra del Fuego Natl Park, or maybe at Estancia Harberton (the biggest and oldest estancia in Tierra del Fuego, typical TAR pitstop).
*I think they already had their plane tickets out of Ushuaia to probably Buenos Aires. It's a pain to get out of Ushuaia by eather plane or bus these days. You have to book way in advance. So it would be impossible for 8-9 teams + crew to just hop on a plane. So I guess the tickets were handed to them, with 2 or 3 departing times.
*Finally, the guidos didn't look like they were in a really good mood. They had their serious face. It doesn't really indicate anything but they might have been at the middle or the back of the pack.

Maputo/Mozambique, Africa ( dates? )

Some friends of mine are Peace Corps vols in Mozambique and claim that the race came through Maputo sometime between Thanksgiving and December 7. One of the destinations was the old Portuguese fort (pictured here: http://tabisite.com/gallery_af/mozambique/91af265.jpg). Unfortunately they didn't have any other details. This does seem consistent with the spoilers that teams were on their way to South Africa, as Maputo is usually reached through Joburg

Slowhatch (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,8579.msg173787.html#msg173787) finds a blog entry posted on Dec 8th
* I think this is the blog (http://peacecorpsmoz.blogspot.com/) of the Peace Corps workers mentioned earlier. It's only a couple of lines near the bottom of the page:
**p.s. They just filmed the amazing race in Maputo!! I don´t know any details but I have been to the fort where the pit stop was.

THAT SUCKS
-
Poor Puddin :jam:
Something to drown your sorrows with, cheers.
-
mswood... include me :'(
this is the spoiled first episode without Romber :'(
-
So I'm guessing this is the Mozambique episode? Since next week they end up in Ushuaia.
-
Probably Marly, they are due for a 36 hour pitstop. Watching the insider clips the teams are complaining about lack of sleep as well as all the driving.
Leaving South America finally..thank God huh?
-
really hope they go to africa this episode!
i missed south america after watching AR10, but i've had enough now!

5 south america episodes?

THAT SUCKS
Hey, South America ain't all bad. I lived there for 12 years!
-
YAY!!!! :yess: NO more SA!! lol i like Suth America but 5 episodes??? That's a little to much for me.

CHOCOHOLIC90196 said "YAY!!!! NO more SA!! lol i like Suth America but 5 episodes??? That's a little to much for me."
GMAN said "Hey, South America ain't all bad. I lived there for 12 years!"
I have good news for CHOCOHOLIC: It's only 4 episodes in South America since episode 4 will be a combined PUNTA ARENA/USHUAIA leg and then teams will get a 36 hour extended rest stop before flying out to Africa.
-
So any guesses on what the tasks they would do here? I'm thinking it could be related to the fish in the opening sequence, (although no one has really ascertained that the fish came from here), so maybe a market task? And maybe also a task in the Fort?
I hope the Mozambique leg won't disappoint.

Maybe 3/4 dozen clams on the half-shell with fresh lemon juice and some good hot sauce?

HAKUSHU8, a task at the pitstop is not impossible, but I don't think it's likely.
-
oooh title posted!!
i wonder who says it
-
About time huh!! No idea who would say it? Teri?
-
Yeah I know haha i've been waiting for it:P
Hmm...it doesn't really sound like anything that any of the racers say..I could see Eric or Ian saying it..
-
It was taken at about 19h15 Ushuaia time
It doesn't take that long to get from Redonda to downtown, so unless there's some intermediate task it looks like an extended pitstop.
-
oooh title posted!!
i wonder who says it
Does anyone know about the cultural differences and customs in that part of the world? Therefore, someone may have to watch their Ps & Qs

my guess is Eric

I will post the intro-flash caps here of what we are guessing are all from East Africa but I am not sure which ones belong where but we should know more tonight after the show airs and I will edit out what pictures don't belong here but probably in upcoming future episodes....i.e. EP6 etc ...

PUDDIN, I recall seeing fish exactly like #19 in a Dar-Es-Salaam fish market photo that GEORGIA PEACH posted.
I also remember seeing the equivalent of the wall in #29 in Zanzibar photos that were posted, probably also by GEORGIA PEACH.

Well they didn't give us much..RATS!!

From the previews, the quote was from Guido.

That rat has a collar on !

Well, we don't need to use the bonus question "Who said the title line" since it was clearly stated in the preview of next week.

Maybe some useful info here? http://www.distant.ca/UselessFacts/fact.asp?ID=215
African Gambian Pouch rats, also known as the African giant pouch rat are the largest rats in the world. They grow to 13-17 inches from tip of nose to the base of the tail and the tail is about the same length or longer. They can be more than six pounds. They live in forests and thickets in from Senegal to Central Sudan and down to South Africa.
From wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambian_Pouch_Rat
-
Here is an article (http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200501/s1282859.htm).
African rat sniffs out Mozambique landmines
A giant African rat has become man's second best friend as it joins forces with the dog to sniff out landmines in Mozambique.
The Belgian de-mining research group APOPO has eight of the rodents working alongside dogs and metal detectors on a minefield in Mozambique's coastal town of Vilanculos, some 650 kilometres north-east of the capital Maputo.

The Apopo (http://www.apopo.org/newsite/content/index.htm) site is interesting; no mention of TAR I could find, but all the rat videos, rat pictures, Hero the rat mascot, and rat news you could want. Even with the flack jackets, I can't believe the producers would expose the racers to any real danger. Maybe it's an "amazing" minefield.
-
I think they showed a confessional of the guidos from this episode in episode four, because they were wearing the same yellow shirts.
-
Since we believe that the pitstop is going to be at the fort in Maputo, is it possible that there are some additional giant rats working elsewhere nearer to Maputo?
-
I think they showed a confessional of the guidos from this episode in episode four, because they were wearing the same yellow shirts.
Michael, I added those screencaps above in the slideshow.

Clues:
*Eric & Danielle taunt Joe & Bill, which quickly escalates into a war of words.
*Teams are reeling after the departure of Rob & Amber.
*Teams get up close and personal with..a rat!
*Friction begins to develop between Oswald and Danny.
*An AIDS march hits close to home with Danny.

-
World aids day was 01 Dec (http://www.unicef.org/mozambique/media_3023.html), but no info yet on where in Maputo the march took place.
-
I hope the challenges begin getting more interesting!!
And I hope dustin and kandice begin wearing hotter clothes! :)
-
I only see one member of each team wearing the body armor, and the card Mirna is holding looks red, so maybe a Roadblock. Some info on the search string from the Apopo site:
The rat is guided by a search string, which is connected between its two trainers. The rat moves systematically up and down the search string, processing lane by lane through the suspected box. Both trainers take position at opposite sides of the box in the safe lane, fixing the search string to the lower leg. When a rat reaches the end of the box, the operators make a lateral step, and the rat moves into the next lane. A box or lane system provides the safe access lanes for the trainers. APOPO is using 5 by 20 meter boxes, which means that the rat has to search 40 lanes of half a meter to clear one box.

ROADBLOCK sure looks like the Rat Race. We see Charla, Ian, Eric, Kandice (?) wearing the protective clothing and Danny, Joyce, a BQ all watching together. Danny has Roadblock red banner clue in his hand. Also looks like many of the teams are doing the task together.
'
Also looks like a little sliding on a glacier in Argentina before departing for Africa.

Thoughts/Info on latest preview pics (thanks puddin!):
Joe spraying himself with the perfume, or some hair product... due to the possible layover the Guidos got in Ushuaia, as indicated in the spoiler?
Mammut (http://www.mammut.ch/mammut/katalog.asp?view=detail&did=10&dart=3&tid=5115&sid=2) labeled device used for avalanche rescue. Possibly getting a clue from within the snow of the glacier/mountain/wherever they were here?
Giving pedicure as a possible, and very wierd detour? Whilst the other detour is the henna tattoo one (assuming it's here)?

We just saw glacier scenes in the preview of Episode 5. Episode 4 contained an unexpected 16 hour rest stop. I believe that the 36 hour rest stop we had predicted is now out the window. The most logical place for glaciers is in the Chilean portion of Tierra del Fuego National Park, which they are close to while staying on Isla Redonda in the Argentinian portion of that park. I predict that the glacier scenes will take up the entire following day (Nov. 27) and that somehow Joe and Bill get behind the rest enough to miss the Nov. 28 morning flight to Buenos Aires, which as I have pointed our before does not cost them anything.

yup and I'm pretty sure thats Uchenna & Joyce coming down the ramp or whatever you call it ;D

Are they doing tasks before they leave to Africa because in some shots Kandice is wearing her blue jacket and her pink shirt, and in others she is wearing the sleeveless white shirt...
-
It could be argued that Joe is wearing his ugly too tight yellow t-shirt also
You can see they ar doing a task before leaving Argentina, navagating to find a clue in the snow whatever?
I don't know Mike, I'm not the airline flight expert so have no idea whats going on.

Yay spoilers! And yay Antarctica! :yess:
Not too many options from Ushuaia; the only substantial towns linked to it are Buenos Aires and Bariloche. Aerolineas Argentinas doesn't seem to fly to Africa, and South African doesn't fly to Argentina; the best Guido can do is connect in Europe or Brazil.
Does anyone know how the clock works on Sucks? Argentina doesn't run on daylight saving, and is two hours ahead of EST. Here are flights offered by Aerolineas Argentinas to Buenos Aires one week later; I've cleared those options that I don't think teams could make.

So my guess is the beginning of this leg they have to go hike on some mountain to get a route marker, then the clue tells them to fly to Africa where they complete the Detour and the Roadblock.

For anyone working the timetables, the final connection looks like LAM (http://www.lam.co.mz/en).

Linhas Aereas de lMozambeque. Check the website on the side of the plane: www.lam.co.mz There are daily flights from Johansburgo to Maputo. So this looks like the teams arriving first in Maputo or Dar es Salaam. And it looks like at least three teams are bunched.

we should be due for nel this episode

I've brought over from my post #1700, page 69 of SPOILERS, the ep.5 segment of my ULTIMATE TIMELINE as a reminder since it seems to be forgotten:
5. Ushuaia 11/28 to Maputo
Leaders fly out on Aerolineas Argentinas 1886 from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires International 1030 to 1511; stragglers go on AR2811 2136 to 0056 arriving at Buenos Aires Domestic, requiring bus or taxi transfer to Buenos Aires International terminal
LAN Argentina 4554 Buenos Aires 1900 to 2135 Sao Paulo
LAN Argentina 4550 Buenos Aires 0805 to 1040 Sao Paulo
SAA206 Sao Paulo 1725 to 0715 Johannesburg
TM300 Johannesburg 0840 to Maputo 0940 11/30 (note: TM is the code for LAM)
NOTE that catching the earlier flight out of Ushuaia made no difference in arrival at Maputo due to once a day transatlantic flight.
Pitstop on evening of 12/1

I will die if they say the flight arrives 10 min early. ;D

Thanks puddin!
Is it possible for the rat roadblock to be in Vilanculos? It's about 403 miles away from Maputo and that would be a 10 hour drive or more. Although there is an airport there (Google Maps direct you to the airport when you search for Vilanculos, Mozambique), so they could do chartered flights again.
Also, found this (http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Africa/Mozambique/photo408057.htm) photo taken from Vilanculos, which has great similarities with this intro pic (http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e390/freelancer2k/TAR11spoiler/intro/23.jpg), like what some people pointed out already. I'm thinking the long piece on the intro pic boat is the sail, but it's at a higher position than the sail in some of the pictures that I've seen.

I have not seen any previews of Teri and Ian in Africa. In keepin' with puddin's boot list, are Teri & Ian so far behind that they do not factor in this episode?
-
At the preview,Ian said something about the roadblock.
-
I'm going to pose what for me is the dilemma of this episode and ask for ideas and comments on it. Teams will have gone to a glacier before getting to the Ushuaia airport, then fly 1000 miles north to Buenos Aires and several hundreed miles further north to Sao Paulo. Then they get on a place for an almost 9 hour flight across the Atlantic Ocean and most of South Africa. Then they change planes in Johannesburg and fly one hour to Maputo. It makes no sense for them to be again getting on any plane this episode and going another 405 miles northeast to work with the giant rats where the landmines are. I believe that some giant rats are imported to the Maputo area for a special, simple task so teams can finish the detour or roadblock and get back to the old Portuguese fort for the pit stop. If teams were going to go to the landmine area, then it would logically be in another episode since that area is on the way to Tanzania and Kenya. What do you think?
-
I may have the answer to the dilemma posed above. It can be found on the APOPO website (http://www.apopo.org/newsite/content/index.htm). APOPO is the organization running the landmine clearing operation further north in Mozambique, but its training base is here:
Mine Detection Rats
PO Box 649 , Maputo - Mozambique
Country office, Logistics and Training base:
Avenida da Revolucao, Inhambane
Tel/Fax: + 258 293 20 126 - Mobile : + 258 82 31 80 990
Inhambane is 300 km (190 miles) north and east of Maputo on the coast. I am guessing that it will be 4 to 5 hours by car or bus. That is doable for tired Amazing Race teams, even though it is equally possible that the rats are imported to the Maputo area for a special task. It is also possible that the rats used by the Amazing Race are not landmine-trained rats. There are plenty of rats around Maputo, some of which (cane rats) are part of the local diet.

WTG everyone
What comes first Roadblock or Detour? Chateau can you guess from the Roadblock sun if its early or late in the day?
In the taxi scene Danielle says" I'm not touching any of these peoples feet." toe painting and Dirty/Digging are the Detour since the Rats are the Roadblock.
Now during the Roadblock Rats we see teams with trucks and they are maybe bunched for maybe Hours of operation.

Wherever it is, it takes place early in the next morning on December 1st.
Probably a major bunch point where they all have to wait until 6:00 am. (That's what this solar altitude looks like: about 14 deg)
Hey, Puddin I was already on it!

SLOWHATCH, I used your reference (which might have been based on my website reference) to learn about the Limpopo Railroad since that is where some active clearance is taking place. This railroad runs from Zimbabwe into Mozambique at Chicaulacaula through Chokwe into Maputo. For those who want to know where these places are, consult the excellent interactive map reference provided by SLOWHATCH in the MAPS, MAPS, MAPS thread around 1am today. For those who want to learn more about this railway click here: LIMPOPO RAILROAD (http://www.zimmedia.com/limpopo_line/). Rats could be in use along this railroad quite close to Maputo.

I agree that Slowhatch's interactive map (http://students.fct.unl.pt/~vmb10292/searchmozmap/searchmozmap.htm#cimo) is excellent as well as addicting! I'm totally hooked on it ..but be warned! it is not a good map for someone that has TAR OCD

--------------------------------------------------
The locutario where the pics were taken was at the corner of 25 de Mayo and San Martin in Ushuaia. It was taken at about 19h15 Ushuaia time (17h15 NYC). The sunset here is at about 22h15.

 I agree Puddin that the glacier isn't a Roadblock or Detour, just an info stop. Dirtbags are probably half of the Detour, I don't know the other half (henna maybe?). And as for the ice-pack cap we found a long time ago, it's now or never.

My guess is tht the roadblock comes before the detour, based on what we know.

*Friction begins to develop between Oswald and Danny.
*An AIDS march hits close to home with Danny.
Could the AIDS march happen the night of November 30th, when everyone has to wait 'till the morning for the Roadblock? If so, they would have to be in a somewhat major city for the teams, especially Oswald/Danny, to see the event. Although, they could also see the AIDS march on their way to the next task from the Roadblock (if this indeed happened on the morning of December 1st), or on the way to somewhere from something.
A possible scenario for the Roadblock: The rats are placed in a fenced area, where no Roadblocker can come in at first, and so the rats need to be on a leash. Then the rats have to sniff out a landmine type device, not exactly a land mine, and it would stay there? (I don't know exactly what the rat does when it finds a landmine... jumps up and down and points to it?) Then I think the Roadblocker could now enter the fenced area and follow the string path made by the rat to the landmine, which is actually a clue to their next destination, only that it smells like a landmine so that the rat could sniff it out.
Thanks for your insight on Vilanculos, apskip. I removed it from the "future locations" section in the wikipedia article of TARAS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Race_11), as it's not proven yet whether the teams would really go there or not.

Bringing this over from the IGN interview that Puddin found.
We were in Africa, and the Pit Stop location had to get moved because of logistics. We'd taken a flight to the next location, packed up about forty bags into a propeller charter flight and flew two hours to the next location. As soon as we landed, we got a phone call to say the teams had been held up. They were never gonna make it to the pit stop where we were at. We'd just unloaded all the bags in the middle of the night. So they asked the flight crew if they would fly us back the next morning, and the crew said no; they were gonna go back. So we had to load all the bags back on the plane, take the two hour flight back again, then go out and in the middle of the night for the pit stop, having not been to bed at all. There was no facility for any of us, like chairs or any of that. So at one point there was 12 of us, cameramen and production people, all tightly packed onto the mat, which was lying in a grassy area, being absolutely annihilated at 3:00 am by mosquitoes.

How about this idea for the rats. They sniff out a "mine" and the racer must dig out the "mine" to get their clue.

MARTIAL GLACIER
This is accessed via chairlift 4 km northeast of the center of Ushuaia.
The chair-lift trip is not only an attraction because of the beautiful sights of the city, but it also offers an interesting opportunity to go for walks to the glacier. From the top station, different paths will lead the tourist to visit places such as the "portillo", from where he can observe the Andorra Canyon.
Walking excursions on ice are simple, the steepest slope being at the beginning of the trip. Precaution should be taken with cracks, especially in spring and fall, when ice bridges are weak. If you do not have suitable equipment, it would be convenient to climb Negro Canyon, a vast valley opening to the right as you go up to the glacier, after leaving the chair-lift.

Thanks Slowhatch! From what we know about the Fort/Pitstop this is not about EP5 obviously the teams are giving confessionals in the daylight not at a grassy area at 3am. It pretty much confirms what we already knew and that there is more than one leg in the future for Africa probably something to do with the Masai men ...lots of good info in that paragraph so where was Phil heading? ??? What could have held the teams up?
Maybe this needs its own thread wish we knew if its for EP6 or 7.
-
It has to be episode 6 pitstop, with Phil and crew going on to the episode 7 locations and then having to come back. There isn't time for going to Poland and coming back, so it has to be Afirca and there can't be any pitstops beyond 7 in Africa due to time constraints. We really don't know where epsiode 6 pitstop is, but the leading contenders are in the Zanzibar area and Dar-es-Salaam area. It is more probable that Episode 7 pitstop is somewhere in Kenya accessed from Nairobi.
-
Ok apskip I moved the info to EP6 thread now that we have a title.

It might be the central market (green trim with white numbers--compare with the photos at the bottom of this album (http://www.pbase.com/ha3349/out_of_africa)), but it's not enough to make a match: there's more than one market in town.
-
So the Detour could be: Clean Hands or Dirty Hands? Or just Clean or Dirty? Clean for having nail polish put on, while Dirty for digging through the dirt?
Henna then seems like not part of the Detour for this episode.

I vote for Finger Nails or Toe Nails, as I believe the other DETOUR option is to clip toenails based on some photos we've already seen.
It is interesting that they will dig in the Glacier for a clue buried in the ice. Getting there and getting down and to the airport may take an hour or two each way, but the task itself will be fairly quick.
What now is most unusual to me is how do Joe and Bill lose one day. The teams should be released after a 12 hour pitstop maybe between 1am and about 5am on Monday Nov. 27. The chairlift will have hours of operation, which will dictate when they can get to the glacier, so they will all bunch there. They will be done before noon and on their way to the airport, but it is Nov. 27 unless there was an extended pit stop to 36 hours. If there isn't then how do Joe and Bill get behind everyone else by one day? We know they catch up by Mozambique. They can do this if only behind 12 hours, but not if behind 24 hours. It looks like there must be an extended pit stop at Ushuaia.
-
This shot was taken between 2:33 and 3:17 pm (assumes November 30th).

They have used Clean or Dirty before in season5 episode 10
-
we need shots of other teams now so we can compare time!!
-
This shot, if it was taken between 2:33 and 3:17 pm , would have have been made with a solar azimuth of about 260 deg. I checked all the markets indicated by Slowhatch's link in "maps" and only Mercado Estrela Vermelha has allies that line up at the correct angle to get the sun's direction in the shot. So that is my guess for the Detour location.

ok, it's really late so sorry if I asked this question already and somebody replied, I'm to tired to go back and check ( :umn:)
but do we know if the detour or the road block comes first?
-
I would think the detour comes first; the roadblock has to be in the early morning. But it's just a guess. :ele: (no rat smileys)
-
Wherever it is, it takes place early in the next morning on December 1st.
Probably a major bunch point where they all have to wait until 6:00 am. (That's what this solar altitude looks like: about 14 deg)
Hey, Puddin I was already on it!
Roadblock, bunching = Hours of Operation Michael.

I'm so confused on the dates Slowhatch? Detour first thing on arrival on Nov 30th? Roadblock/Rats early morning Dec 1st?
eta: I think its a mouse  :rat?:
eta: by request Slowhatch :rats:
-
I'm not sure about the dates, either. I was just going by the times Chateau provided: morning arrival, afternoon detour and early morning roadblock.
-
PUDDIN and SLOWHATCH, add me to the list of those uncertain and perplexed over dates. My post #122 explained it like this:
What now is most unusual to me is how do Joe and Bill lose one day. The teams should be released after a 12 hour pitstop maybe between 1am and about 5am on Monday Nov. 27. It looks like there must be an extended pit stop at Ushuaia.
The reason, of course, being the sighting of Joe and Bill at the Ushuaia travel agency on the afternoon of Nov. 28. It is barely possible that the individual reporting it was citing an event 24 hours old, but I don't believe that. My bet is now on the extended pit stop. The problem is how to determine which day it is either before or during the showing of Episode 5.
-
Just to be sure everybody knows, I just used Apskip's November 30th as the flight arrival date. It seems to check out with the Guido sighting on November 28th in Ushuaia. I haven't loaded it into a timeline myself to make sure it is in sync. But I suspect I don't have to.
The other thing that Slowhatch found was that the rats like to do the mine searching in the mornings due to the high heat of the day.
When teams are debarking the plane at Maputo the Sun is already up at about 60 deg solar altitude. So they can't do the rat roadblock on that day.

Whee! I've got some catching up to do and a whole potpourri of things to comment on--so here goes!
Ep 4 Pitstop--we do think this is 36 hours, right? (11/26-11/28 AM?)
The clincher for me is the Pit Stop cams which show two lunches (or big meals in daylight hours anyway) which suggests 2 different days to me. The first was the arrival one with Ch/Mirna, and the second one was the Bodego Cafeteria one with the Huskies.
I think that this might well be the restaurant at the Valle de los Huskies, a breeding/training/sled dog ride place located 19 km out Rte # 3... (and where were Ch/Mirna that day?)
Valle de los Huskies
Nineteen kilometers from Ushuaia, along National Route Nº3, it has a restaurant, a tea shop and a bar. There is rental and sales of skiing equipment, rental of sleds, dog sled rides, snow cats, illuminated runs, "flexmobile" excursions and a skiing school. There is a 1,000 meter high-speed ski run
and at 17 km out of Ushuaia is the Altos del Valle
Seventeen kilometers from the city, along National Route Nº3, this center offers lodging in cabins, private parking, a bar, regular transport and a skiing school. It also has the first school for child sled team drivers and Siberian Husky breeding establishments.
which could be where they spend the night before doing the glacier climb on 11/28.
(My pretty little map shows the Valle--but maybe somebody else could add in the glaciers? Not quite sure where they are...)
On to the glacier climb:
apskip said The most logical place for glaciers is in the Chilean portion of Tierra del Fuego National Park, which they are close to while staying on Isla Redonda in the Argentinian portion of that park. I predict that the glacier scenes will take up the entire following day
which makes sense to me--I just think it is now 11/28.
I am not totally convinced about which glacier they climbed though--after reading several blogs there seem to be two choices--the Martial and the Albino Glaciers.
The Albino actually seems to be more of a mountaineering one...
This blog (http://www.bootsnall.com/samericatravelguides/mar01ushuaia.shtml) is a hoot! ("Stop complaining Philip--your testicles aren't really frozen solid!")--in ref to climbing the Martial Glacier...
The task seems to be some sort of find/search/rescue task as previously described. But since they have met the dogs--shouldn't they at least get to have a sled-dog turn?
Pictures...then more to say re the next bit!

Episode Detail: You Need to Watch Your Jokes, Guy - Amazing Race: All-Stars
The seven remaining teams fly from Argentina to Mozambique on the fifth leg of the race. Once there, the teams encounter a large rat that holds the key to their next clue.
eta: Kogs, your the basketball person and we put you in charge of all Amazing Race promos seen during the games ;D

I"m leaving the flights to apskip's expertise cause I'm sure he has them down...
I guess arrival 11/30? with tasks to 12/1?
We know that World Aids Day was on 12/1 so that is when there would be the AIDS march that hits home to Danny...
I found one in Beira but not yet in Maputo.
I like the little rat too! It is all "Borrowers Afield"!
But I have a theory about the "Dirty Hands" task--I think that they are filling sandbags in preparation for serious flooding.
As most of you probably know, Mozambique was devastated by serious flooding in 2000 with a huge loss of lives and homes. The government has been apparently making extensive preparations (http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0221/p01s02-woaf.html?page=2) for a repeat occurrence since then. In Feb 2007, there was a combination of serious flooding in conjunction with Cyclone Flavio (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17276953/), and many areas of Mozambique were significantly affected. However, this time the loss of life was much much less due to the extensive preparations (http://usinfo.state.gov/xarchives/display.html?p=washfile-english&y=2007&m=March&x=200703011406311EJrehsiF0.6547205).
And remember our cute little fellow with the hat and the bottle?
I can track the Yes we can hat (a Michigan charity) from there to Kenya...
Yes we can! is affliliated with JONAH (Joint religious network of action and hope)--and they in turn are affiliated with the GAMALIEL foundation---and they just sent a mission team to Kenya! (http://www.gamaliel.org/CBCO/KENYA/default.htm) in October. They also have a project in South Africa...
The bottle could be some part of a pediatric nutritional supplement program (perhaps for AIDS patients?)--it would be common to supply a bottle for the clean water needed to mix up the solutions...
I think that the Gamaliel Foundation supports several orphanages in the area--so maybe TPTB are planning another chance for U/J?

I found a bottle with that liquid/bottle and its similar but mine is in Boane outside of Maputo but really it could be Kenya.
My location is the Iris Ministries, Inc. | Ministry Locations - Zimpeto Center (http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:1TNIt5ED0TQJ:www.irismin.com/ministryLoc_boane.cfm+iris+Ministries&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=4&gl=us) and I keep thinking that is where they bag the dirt for some reason.

That bottle is an exact match (ugh--I'm glad I don't have to drink it!)--I'll just be glad if they are featuring the children somewhere again!
And of course, that hat could have gotten most anywhere thru the mission connections--I just loved the direct trail to Kenya shortly before our guys arrived.

Also the teams might have a task to do before leaving Mozambique so some of the introflashs, if in Mozambique at all might come into play EP6.

Sorry, PUDDIN. The way this episode works the major time is likely to be spent showing the travel arrangements and flights since taking 4 separate flights over a distance of about 4000 miles is likely to be time-consuming. The rest of the tasks you already know:
go up the Martial Glacier and use those devices to locate and dig for a buried clue (which say fly to Maputo)
once off the plane in Maputo go to either the rats or market for the DETOUR and ROADBLOCK and then from one to the other, probably with an hours of operation stop in between
end up at the old fort for the pitstop
That's a pretty full episode, so what more could there be?
-
Looking for something to do? ;D Take a peek at this page (http://www.edwardsandlee.com/photos/hollywood-05/photoshollywood-05.html) and tell me if you think that's really Phil.
I think that's Eric Close

We still have something to do...maybe if we find exactly where the confessionals were taken Chateau could estimate a time :luvya:
The Guidos, if at the same spot as Eric/Dee, have more sun on their face which may ot may not be good for both teams.
Pitstop, Maputo: Portuguese fort (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=2666383&view=findpost&p=6838231) == The Portuguese fort (or Fortaleza) is Maputo's most evocative landmark and is called, Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceiao (Our Lady of Conception).

Well, I was thinking about it, I think the detour DOES come first because we see Kandice running off a plane wearing a white shirt, and then we see her really early in the morning wearing a Pink shirt while Dustin does the road block, so I'm guessing it's detour - they choose the bags - get dirty, change, wait for the HOH, do the road block - go to pitstop.
-
There's not much to go by there for shadows.
Maybe if someone could find where is that stairway behind the Peewees of Persecution I might be able to ballpark a time. :reading:
-
Roadblock comes first the clues say so and Chateau, i think? pointed out that the rodents can only perform in the early morning hours ..
clue:
During a Roadblock, Teams must get up close and personal with a rat in order to receive their next clue

You crack me up, Chateau! :lol3:
I've been looking for that darned staircase with zero luck--it has to be inside the fort and why don't those tourists take more pictures there?! :meow:
Okay, now I'm all confused about which comes first Roadblock or Detour--but I'm taking those CBS clues with a grain of salt because they are not always entirely accurate...
But I thought we had figured out that it is too hot for the ratties except in the early AM--and by apskip's flight arrivals teams wouldn't be getting in till too late for them on 11/30.
That's why Chateautime of 2-4 for the detour shots seemed to be perfect--do the detour on the 11/30, then bunch for Hours of Op for the ratties in the AM of 12/1, with pitstop back at the fort. And don't the clothes match too from Ratties to Pitstop but not from Detour to Pitstop?? (can't quite remember but I thought so...)
And the task that I think is sandbags--is that really in the dark or just that awful TV lighting?
I still think that there will be some AIDS recognition on 12/1 (World AIDS Day) since the incidence in Mozambique is more than 13.5%...and since TAR is such a supportor of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, but haven't figured out how that fits in timewise either. We know there is an AIDS March somewhere though, and all walks etc that I have found (in other places in Africa) are on the actual day.
Just had a thought---I guess they could do Ratties in the cool of the evening, then Aids March/Orphanage or whatever they come up with 12/1 AM, then Detours? Hmmm...have got to find those clothes shots...
Is there a new preview? Did anybody catch it?

With so few clothes you would think this would be easier!
Charla has on the same shirt for Roadblock, Detour and Pitstop--but she wore that pink sweater to death too!
Mirna's matches for Detour and Roadblock but not for Pit stop--unless she has that on underneath the other blue shirt?
Oh boy oh boy--finally we get to see Charla on wheelies!
I was rewatching the glacier climb--do you think they are working together during the dig? An Intersection of sorts? Looked like four together here and there...

>>Puddin wrote on page 4 (I couldn't find the quote button)Team arrive at the Mastil Crucero A.R.A. General Belgrano, pitstop EP4 in this order:
1) Oswald/Danny
2) Eric/Danielle
3) Teri/Ian
4) Joe/Bill
5) Dustin/Kandice
6) Uchenna/Joyce
7) Charla/Mirna
Does anybody know the time variances on the various team arrivals on the Phil's mat last week? Is there enough that is going to give some team(s), especially the first half since they go first, a beneficial head start for this next leg? Or were they so close together in time they are bunched together on a fairly even starting gate? ???
-
Are we ready yet in Ep5 for one of the following:
YIELD?
INTERSECTION?
FAST FORWARD?
TBC?
or
TBC ?
-
I think its a NEL Gman because we do have pitstop confessionals and the Fort was spoiled as a pitstop way back when we didn't know too much.
Peach I get the feeling that E/D and U/J are just working together at the Glacier/Clue.
And NDIrish no matter when they leave the Ushuaia pitstop I don't think any lead matters as we see all teams pretty much bunched at Rats/Roadblock except Teri/Ian but I suspect they are just out of the camara shots.
Whats still confusing is the clue about Danny and the AIDS march ..other than knowing AIDS day is DEC 1st, we can't find any hard evidence of any so called march in the Maputo area. Chateau spotted the ocean near the Roadblock so maybe we are looking for the so called AIDS march somewhere outside the area ???

Since there has been no mention of "the latest castoff from The Amazing Race" as a guest on TES Monday, it sure seems to be that we will have our first NEL.
If it is indeed an NEL will TPTB:
1. Come up with some new scheme?
2. Repeat TAR10's come in first in the next leg or be eliminated?
3..Resort back to surrender all your clothing and money?
4..Resort back, back to just surrender all your money?
5. Resont back, back, back to nothing happening to the last place team?
And since the boot list has Ian and Teri as the next team to go will they come in last this ep and be eliminated in the next, or will Schmirma come in last but come in first next week with Ian and Teri last.

SUNDAY PROGRAM ALERT
The last scheduled tip-off of the NCAA basketball game (UCLA) is at 5:15PM. The games usually run at least two hours sometimes more. So the Start of TAR probably will be pushed back (in the East) to around 8:30PM.
People planning to record should set their timers to begin around 8:15PM and run until 9:45 just to be on the safe side!

This shot was taken between 12:09 and 12:46 pm (assumes November 26th).
There is no way that the second group of teams arrived at 1:50 pm as indicated in the show. Besides it is only a 50 min flight from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia. So some time warp is going on here!
-
And from Chateau d If
Shadows for Uchenna & Joyce you can get arough guess for most of the others.
With a time of 1:30pm to 2:00pm Uchenna & Joyce as ajumping off Point.
Oswald & Danny could be as early as 10:10-10:40 am
Eric & Danielle woud be int hat same time area but perhaps 5 minutes laer.
Teri & Ian who made the 2cd boat, but by there own words say they spent about 40 minutes looking for the routemarker, probably missed the next boat and had to settle for at the earliesta boat that was 40 minutes behind Danny & Oswlad & Eric & Danielle. Teri also seemed to feel that she took a long time at the roadblock.
So I would guess 11:00am-11:30am
Joe & Bill finished just briefly before Dustin & Kandicce (you can see them in the Matt Chats) and should be roughly three hours after Oswald & Danny & Eric & Danielle yet about 20 in front of Uchenna & Joyce.
So I would estimate 1:10pm-1:40 pm
Dustin & Kandice at 1:11pm-1:42pm
And then Charla & Mirna who had to wait an addition 20 minutes for their boat. But its reported that their boat made the trip quickly (most likely due to the large difference in the weight. Mirna and three average sixed persons plus Charla. But for Uchenna & Joyce's boat. You would have 4 racers, and four additional people filming and the driver of the boat. So their boat should have made up a lot of time. But part of that time should be lost due to the slower pace Charla would have to keep in the woods.
So for Charla & Mirna I would expect anywhere from 2:00pm-2:40 pm.
Though Uchenna & Joyce are seen at teh Pit Stop greeting Charla & Mirna. Either two things happened.
Uchenna & Joyce royally sucked at getting to the Pit Stop in which case subtract about 20 minutes from all the teams times that arrived before them.
Or they hung around longer then usually for either interviews or just to see who would get eliminated.
But it appears that there is a significant bunching point before the glacier event either in travel arrangements or hours of operations since two teams shown working together should have started with a difference of over 3 hours.
-
Chateau the flight started at 11:00am and they should have arrived at 11:50 am. Which really matches up with your shadows. Give them time to grab their gear, and get throught he airport should always take several mintues.
Its funny, since I do go through these damn things.
Did the episode actually show a time stamp of 1:50?
Because, yeah thats wrong.
-
Yeap, I rechecked they put the wrong time stamp on it.
But it also gives us a better indication of Teri & Ians position since they feel that they are just leaving the docks at around the same time of 11:50am.
-
They also time stamped the first group as arriving at 10:45. That group was supposed to have left Punta Arenas at 8:00 am. Unfortunately, for this group it was too overcast to get a shadow at USH airport.
There is one more thing I think you may want to torque into your analysis and that is the E&D and Chas zodiac got loaded up to go in the 11:48 am to 12:03 pm time frame:

Well that sucks and makes no sense at all.
I am going to have to ponder that for a while.
-
It looks like about a 10 to 15 minute ride to Playa Larga
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
And then about 30 minutes to the zodiac dock.
-
And figure about 10-15 minutes to get out of the airport and get cabs.
So yeah, it doesn't make sense at all.
-
Chateau, I can't figure this out. If the flight was on time (which it is possible it was late, and we ssume it took a hour to go from the plane to the boats thats puts us at around 10am. WHich is significantly off.
I have to assume that not only was there a limit on how often the boats departed, but that they didn't start until roughly your time stamp of Eric & Danielle and the Oswald & Danny.
Which does actually make some sense, since in the clips they go to great lengths to joke about how long Teri & Ian must be looking in the hills for the clue box in the wrong direction. Which does play into Ian admitting that they spent about 40 minutes in the wrong area. Perhaps he is saving face, and it was a little longer, say closr to an hour.
And lets assume that the first flight did in fact arrive leave and arrive late (which is possible and would explain why Amber that it was possible that they might catch up to the first pack, I mean a three hour gap in the 2cd half of the race is usually fairly solid to the Pit Stop.
This could mean that they might have arrived say at closer to 10, then 9 with a delay. Spent about an hour getting to teh dock area, gives time for Ian & Teri to be lost close to an hour, and bunching point with the times that the boats start hours of operation, would also explain how E & D and O & D know that Teri & Ian have lost a significant amount of time. They could get to the docks just after the other teams left. Which would be fairly close to the arrival time of the 2cd flight. This also helps support why Teri is so worried about how long she is taking doing the roadblock.
Flights lands close to Noon, gives them an hour to get to the docks gives times for roughly a 30 minute wait for Uchenna & Joyce 2cd boat. To do the tasks and get to the Pit Stop aroung your 1:30-2:00 calculation.
Its the only thing I can think of that makes any sense.
-
That sounds like a good arrangement. I can't wait to hear them say Uchenna and Joyce depart at 2:00 am. Not even realizing that they gave us a 1:50 pm landing time. :lol3:
Or, I could just be way off with the time calcs. :o
-
They do on occasion get their legend material inaccurate.
But usually if a flight, is significantly off someone will mention it.
But with so much of this episode given to setting up Rob & Amber's demise. They probably just didn't feel it was worth it to put in of that in any of the dialogue clips.

Oh, VERY good job, Michael D!
That's even more interesting because apskip has previously posted that the training camp for the ratties is there, and that the distance would be feasible.
I may have the answer to the dilemma posed above. It can be found on the APOPO website. APOPO is the organization running the landmine clearing operation further north in Mozambique, but its training base is here:
apskip wrote:

Inhambane is 300 km (190 miles) north and east of Maputo on the coast. I am guessing that it will be 4 to 5 hours by car or bus. That is doable for tired Amazing Race teams, even though it is equally possible that the rats are imported to the Maputo area for a special task.
Inhanbane has everything we need to complete some of the screencaps--beautiful beaches, dhows, fishing, dolphin swimming---but that doesn't explain how they still end up back in Maputo at that doggone fort.
Unless we are looking at this backwards? Maybe they arrive Maputo via Jo-burg but go directly on to Inhambane via another flight? Or car or whatever...
Do the ratties, see the AIDS march, (I would still like a children's AIDS segment here), and then go back to Maputo for the Detour and Pitstop.
Gosh--now I'll have to go back and look at all those Chateautime shots to see if this could possibly fit!
Thanks Michael D!

Bus blog! (http://www.travelpod.com/cgi-bin/keyword2.pl?tweb_keyword=inhambane)
The bus was already packed when we got in, and we went up toward the front. There were 2 open seats but a guy said that they were saved. We stood for a while and eventually just sat down in those seats. Thank God we did that because we would have had the most uncomfortable ride of our lives. Even in the seats it was uncomfortable. We were sitting for the entire ride. I slept and kept sitting while Ang got up at every stop we made. It was a long, long day with sweaty, smelly armpits in my face from those who were standing in the aisle right next to me, brushing up against me at every bump (and there were MANY bumps because the roads were horrible). But eventually we made it to Inhambane and we got there ahead of schedule even!

Maputo, Mozambique 241.4 miles to Inhambane, Mozambique
-
Is there video yet?? Knew I should have been watching that game!
INHAMBANE
The city of Inhambane is one of the oldest settlements in southern Africa. In 1534, Portuguese traders established a permanent presence and a trading post there and their influence can be seen in the architecture and layout of the city. There are many old buildings in the city, in varying states of repair. The market, which is well-organised and clean, is well worth a visit, and is good value particularly for locally produced woven straw baskets and mats.
Those heading directly for the beaches should drive down the main street of the town. At the roundabout, take the right hand turn (near the Clube Ferroviário) and continue straight out along this road. The road narrows as you leave the town and from here, it is about 21km to the fork for Ponta da Barra and Tofo beach.

peach, I've seen those pictures and always thought it was our Maputo fort
Michael your a detective now :waves:
-
thanks Puddin
peace - we must have been thinking the same cause as soon as I read about inhambane I went looking for market pictures and then I also googled "Inhambane - Manicure" and something came up that looked oddly like the manicure kit Charla was holding.

:wohoo: Michael!
I know puddin--I can't find a tourist info about a fort but the pics are tagged Inhambane so stuck them in...who knows if half the tourists actually know where they were? Sometimes I have trouble when I'm travelling too!
This is actually very sad--(the TAR curse again??) because this is the area that was hit very hard by the Cyclone and flooding in Feb/March...

I still think the pictures prove that the manicure task is back in Maputo.

yeah, that's why I didn't post those pictures because I'm pretty sure I read about the pictures proving it is in Maputo.
Good find with the rats!
-
Great Rattie pictures! Why do I think like Joyce that these are actually kind of cute?? Normally I hate rodents!
I think the manicure task has been definitely ID'd by puddin with perfect photo matches as being in Maputo!
Wish they didn't have to go back there though--I want our guys to get some beach time--maybe swim with the dolphins or the whale sharks!
So I have the game on now--I must really want to see that preview!
-
yeah - I'm watching too in hopes of seeing the preview ... *is a big nerd*
-
Yes, of course they can get to Inhambane in plenty of time to have a Dec. 1 early morning ratfest.
-
No audio and yes as predicted it sucks
-
haha, thanks Puddin, that videos not too bad, it's pretty good actually.
Do we think there is going to be a yield on this leg?
-
It depends on if they want to use the Yield I guess?
Do you all think they all take the same flight? It looks like the trucks racing are the top 3 teams E/D, Chas, T/I only to find out they have a HoursOfOperation
-
haha, I'm not sure if they all take the same flight, but it must suck for the front teams if they DO get on an earlier flight only to discover that all the other teams are going to catch up.
hehe, thank god for HOH.
Of course, for all we know all the teams can be there at the same time and we just didn't see them in that new preview.

Our greeter?

My Inhambane fort pics are definitely in Maputo so will pull them from Inhambane...
Thanks for the video! I can only watch so much non-Duke basketball!
I think they take trucks to Inhambame.
I'm no apskip but I did find a flight--once a week-- back from Inhambane to Maputo but looks to me that it is only on Sunday (or maybe every day except Sunday?) --would be nice if they could fly one way anyhow...
And some road pics...

RNO interviewed Bertram Van Munster 3/7/2007 and this is what he says about NEL:
RNO: The penalty for non-elimination has changed. It used to be nothing, then taking a team’s money, then money and possessions, then in the most recent race it changed to a time penalty. Do you have the penalty balance right now?
Van Munster: Yes, I think we have it right. I think it was right before, too. I thought it was fun when the Bowling Moms had no money in Egypt and they went to the American tour bus and rounded up more money than we would have given them. I think it's a lot of fun and that keeps people on their toes.

GEORGIAPEACH, you have motivated me to see what I could find about flights from Maputo to Inharbane. I verify that this is no Saturday Dec. 2 flight at all and that the info you have for a nonstop Sunday Dec. 3 is correct. There is no flight on Thursday Nov. 30 when they arrive, but on Friday Dec. 1 there is this:
LAM Mozambique
TM 2202 Maputo International (MPM), Maputo, Mozambique 11:20
Inhambane (INH), Inhambane, Mozambique 13:35
1 stop(s) / J41 2h15min
The conclusion I draw is that if teams go to Inhambane, then they aren't going to fly there and they aren't going to fly back to Maputo. They will use road transportation.
-
Puddin I just thought of something, even though E/D, T/I, AND D/O were teams number 1,2,3 and we see them racing in the cars with no other teams around, that doesn't mean they kept their lead, because we have shots of E/D working with U/J at the glacier don't we?
-
:hello2: Thank you apskip!
We have a new preview that has the teams running around in trucks--so looks like they could be driven there on 11/30.
Does that flight I found go only on Sundays? Cause it would be nice if we could let them fly Inhambane-Maputo on 12/1 after the Ratties...
-
There's been a lot about what order roadblock and detour will be for this leg.
http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=1&article=article6831.art&page=1 (http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=1&article=article6831.art&page=1)
Here's some more of RNO Bertram Van Munster interview of 3/7/2007 pertaining to order of markers and a statement that may make things very interesting. I put these together so I didn't have 3 messages about the same interview.
RNO: You introduced the Intersection mechanic in the most recent season. Do you have any new game mechanics coming up in All-Stars?
Van Munster: No. The mechanics of the game stay the same. We move the markers around a little bit to keep everyone on their toes.
RNO: I noticed on the first episode that Phil said that a team “will” be eliminated. On the most reason seasons, he's been saying “may” be eliminated at Pit Stops. He also mentioned eight eliminations, but he didn't say anything about the number of non-elimination legs. Is there a reason for this change?
Van Munster: No... The reason – you'll find out when you watch all 13 episodes. Very good of you [to notice that]!
NOTE: I pasted the 2 questions out of order
-
Van Munster: No... The reason – you'll find out when you watch all 13 episodes. Very good of you [to notice that]!
hmm...i wonder what the heck that is referring to.
-
Some new twist?
Wouldn't it be loverly if we had a final four instead of a final three?! Heee...it is probably just too much basketball!
-
Bert said no new twists or was it Phil in one of the interviews and Michael I keep forgetting about that damn Glacier waste of time task
-
hahah, the only reason I like that task is because I like episodes that are packed with things to do :js:
-
omg I am bored again .........RAT video!! (http://www.gng.org/ml/library.php?movieid=49) :rats:
-
those rats are gigantic
haha yeah Puddin, I'm also bored!
I can't wait until this episode airs. Hopefully the promo for the following episode will give us more to go by then last weeks promo.
-
More rat pictures maybe you all can decide if this is where the Roadblock takes place or not?

It looks like a match to me puddin!
-
I'm bored too. I've gotten myself so confused on what's going on when and so forth.
OT: :ot:
Started a job 2 weeks ago and had to work days before going on nights tonight (Sun). Took a nap Fri night after working all day and set alarm for 10:30 PM, then reset for 11:30, shut off alarm and got up 6 AM Sat. I have to stay up till 5 or 6 this morning so I can sleep during the day and not fall asleep tonight. I considered myself a night person after working nights for many years and then going on days for 2 weeks messed me up.
:ignore: :whever:
:carryon:
-
Dang, I had cute smileys for my last message. They aren't there. Was I supposed to do more than click add image and then click on what I want? I previewed and they didn't show so I re did them and previewed and they still weren't there so I thought that they didn't show in the preview.
What did I do wrong. I guess I'm too tired to remember how I did it before.
-
Cute smilies should show up! :rat?:
-
:ignore: :nm:
testing---Realize I just click and proceed. For some reason I thought I had to click to insert image.

We have a new theory that the teams get to Maputo and then are driven in trucks directly to Inhambane to the apopo Rattie training camp there (see puddins pics of same above). I'm guessing Roadblock there on the 12/1 AM, then contact with the AIDS march (Michael D found a march in Inhambane on 12/1 which prompted all this), then back to Maputo for the Detours and Pitstop that afternoon.
Will that fit in with Chateautimes?
With that weird blue filming of the teams at the what I think is filling sandbags task--is there any way to get a sense of what time they are there? It all looks like night to me...
-
I'm still trying to have the teams NOT to have to backtrack to Maputo.
What to you all think about this maybe wall at the fill the bags detour task? Could this be the Maputo Fort wall?
Because if this is the Fort wall, then the Fort could be Detour not Pitstop, and then the teams could do both Detours in Maputo on 11/30, drive to Inhambane for hours of op, do the Roadblock on 12/1 and not have to backtrack to Maputo again, which would really seem to make more sense...There are so many swimming with dolphins, and/or whale sharks ops nearby Inhambane at the beaches (great for next week!) that it seems a shame to make them go backwards--it would also be closer to Dar, although flights might be easier out of Maputo.
I know the confessional looks like the Fort--but there are a lot of those old orange walls around and we haven't actually found that stairway in any of the Fort pics--so maybe the confessionals could actually be in Inhambane somewhere?? We only have the blog for evidence that the Fort is the Pitstop (and pics) right?
What do y'all think?? I know it is just a possibility--or not??
I just want NO BACKTRACKING on my race! But of course they do it all the time...

-
Oh, I thought that someone had found web photos that matched our promo photos of the rat task location.
To that end this would be the shot to try to match:
About the time of the bag filling task, I don't see enough sunshine to make a good estimate. But I would just guess that it looks like end-of-day. Two hours or so before sunset.

The newest photos Puddin posted above shows blue uniforms. Note in previous pictures of TARAS at rats that we see the arm and leg of someone in a long sleeve blue shirt and someone with long blue pants. None of the racers' clothes fit but the blue does fit with the guys in the Apopo uniforms.
In the upper right corner of the bag filling picture you can see that it's daylight. It was either pausing the video or one of the captures that shows the light good but not enough to tell time of day.
Anyone wonder what's in the back of the pickups? The tarp is not flat. Dirt?
-
Rattie location comparisons: looks like some possibilities cause there are lots of trees in that field.
Good pick up on the blue arms, mkz3d!
Now, about my wall?? :flirt:

Also this:
How long can a rat work?
Normally, the rats are trained about half an hour per day, five days per week. During this period, they are on a food-for-work diet; while during the weekend they feast on an extensive varied meal.
In the REST analysis, rats can evaluate between 100 and 150 filters in about 15 minutes.
In the field, the free running rats scan a 100m2 box in 28 minutes on average. They can do two boxes in one session.

7:30 SEGMENT FOUR - SPECTOR JURY SELECTION BEGINS: (Dateline: Los Angeles, CA)
Music producer Phil Spector is well-known for inventing the "Wall of Sound" and
has worked with great bands like the Beatles and the Ramones. In 2003, he became
known for something very different. The body of actress Lana Clarkson was found
in his mansion in Alhambra, CA shot to death. Spector will finally stand trial
in Los Angeles for Clarkson's death starting with the jury selection on Monday.
CBS News National Correspondent Hattie Kauffman will join us with a preview.
7:39 SEGMENT FIVE - MODERATE DRINKING THROUGH MANAGEMENT: The conventional
wisdom for problem drinkers is that they must quit drinking altogether in order
to be successful. But what if you don't want to stop? In Alcoholics Anonymous
and other 12-step programs, the key to being successful is abstinence from
alcohol. But there is another movement out there - one that believes that
quitting altogether isn't absolutely necessary. For one young wife and mother,
fearful of repeating the drinking behaviors of an alcoholic father, a program
called Moderation Management seems to be an acceptable option. EARLY SHOW
National Correspondent Tracy Smith will have more on this young woman's story
and how her story is one that is becoming increasingly more common.
7:48 SEGMENT SIX - IS YOUR CITY THE MOST KISSABLE?: Think your city has the
most kissable breath in the nation? Well, Dr. Harold Katz, author of the Bad
Breath Bible, is currently touring American cities to test how each ranks when
it comes to the best, most kissable breath. Who ranked highest won't be out
until the beginning of next year, but Dr. Katz will tell us how we can join in
on the fun... AND, he'll have great advice on how you can avoid bad breath!

8:06 SEGMENT EIGHT - DAVE'S ALL ACCESS MOROCCO POSTCARD: (Dateline: Morocco)
Dave Price will send us a postcard from his All-Access adventure in Morocco.
We'll find out what Dave and his lucky winner, Julia Clough of Pittsburgh, have
been up to Monday morning.
8:09 SEGMENT NINE - PERFECT PARENTING - HAPPY KIDS: With so much negativity in
our world, how can you raise positive children? Dr. Karen Reivich of the
Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania recently
co-authored a book, The Optimistic Child, detailing just how parents can raise
optimistic, healthy children in spite of negative events in their lives. Dr.
Reivich will join us Monday morning with advice.
8:15 SEGMENT TEN - BOX OFFICE PLUS - MARK WAHLBERG: Last summer, Mark Wahlberg
scored a box office touchdown with the number one opening of his football drama
Invincible. He followed that with the hugely successful crime drama The
Departed. His role led to an Academy Award nomination... his first. Well, the
Oscar-nominated actor is back again... this time as a man wrongly accused of an
assassination attempt in the thriller Shooter hitting theaters Friday. Wahlberg
will sit down with our own Harry Smith about his new flick Monday morning.
8:30 SEGMENT ELEVEN - NBA SENIOR DANCERS: NETSational Seniors, the senior
cheerleaders who perform at NJ Nets game, will perform their routine on the

Pretty much bunched up all during the race: first at the glacier, then on the flight to Maputo, then waiting for Apopo to open. Teams ended up back in Maputo for the Detour with Bill and Joe, Oswald and Danny, and thirdly Charla and Mirna all making the right choice for a change and going straight instead of turning left at the junction. For once the least physical task was the easiest one to do. Really not that much money to raise, in fact Ian and Terry made the goal with just two customers.
Congrats to the RFF team for predicting just about everything right (except the last place finish by Uchenna and Joyce, but never mind we were right on the NEL so Ian and Teri still have a chance for being the next to go.)
Should be interesting next week.

APOPO Vapour Detection Technology, Vilaculo
Just outside of Vilanculo you can see one of the most bizarre images in the country - rats in harnesses on leads, searching for mines. The civil war that ravaged Mozambique for 17 years has left a legacy of unexploded landmines. The Belgian research organisation APOPO has been successful in training rats as mine detectors. Contact APOPO if you wish to see their work - minefields are dangerous and not areas where you can just turn up unannounced.

Another episode with a lopsided detour. Those that chose manicures (I assume the pedicure cap came from here, but I don't remember seeing any pedicures done by the racers) had a much easier time of it, and were much closer to the pit stop.

The unofficial beach day was at the Praia do Bilene Hotel in Bilene, which is right next door to Xai Xai (pronounced shy shy)--which explains Charla's taxi with the fern to "shy shy" as seen in the Insider videos. (http://video.cgi.cbs.com/vplayer3/play.pl?type=rm&width=480&height=360&feat=vplayer&adtype=pre&arena=video&prod=innertube&id=132733&ord=25171.135695178396)
The beach is a perfect match, although this area was severely damaged by the flooding in the Cyclone in March.
Interestingly, puddin's Iris Ministry (http://www.irismin.com/aboutUs.cfm) holds their annual staff meeting here in Bilene--and they were heavily involved in the flood relief.
Serendipity?

Just for the record the glacier they went to was Martial Glacier. I read it as Marshall Glacier several places even an article by a Toronto newspaper.
Wanted to be sure the correct name was recorded if someone wanted to check it out.

makzd3, I checked back for the first RFF reference to Glacier Martial. It is post #66 by puddin the evening of March 12. As a Geographer Extraordinaire (if you don't believe it, check out my avatar; would it lie?) and a champion speller(but a lousy data entry person), I can assure you that you are correct.

Hey you guys I am so confused!!!! :groan:
When did this beach day take place?? After they arrived in Mozambique, before the rat thing. Or during the pit stop.
All this is so confusing, it is driving me nuts. :rotf:

charlierose, I have been looking for a quote of my own stuff, but not easily finding it let me paraphrase it for you. There are two possibilities:
1. the beach pics were taken after landing at Maputo airport on Nov. 30 when they had the entire day to kill
2. the beach pictures were taken on Saturday Dec. 2 somewhere near Maputo when they have another day to kill while waiting for Dec. 3 to fly Johannesburg - Blantyre - DarEsSalaam and then on by plane or boat to Zanzibar.
Take your pick.

Thanks.
