'Amazing Race' lags in ratings contest
The reality show's fall premiere places third in its new Sunday-night slot, after football and 'Extreme Makeover.'

By Scott Collins, Times Staff Writer

CBS' reality show "The Amazing Race" is still on the hunt for stable ratings.

You may recall that the network shifted the globetrotting scavenger hunt from Wednesdays to 8 p.m. Sundays this fall, where executives hoped it could kick off a reconstituted night of entertainment programming. For the first time in years, CBS won't have a Sunday made-for-TV movie; instead "Race" will lead into two cop dramas, "Cold Case" and "Without a Trace," the latter a hit show imported from Thursdays.

" 'Race' is a self-starter," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler told reporters in July.

But this time around the start wasn't so impressive. The 10th edition of "Race" had to settle for third place in its 90-minute Sunday debut, with an average of 10.1 million viewers, according to early data from Nielsen Media Research.

Worse, the debut slipped 11% compared with last fall's premiere among the core audience of adults ages 18 to 49.

The CBS premiere was edged out by a two-hour special version of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," which scored 11.5 million viewers during its head-to-head competition with "Race." But the bigger problem was NBC's "Sunday Night Football," which through two airings is already making life difficult for rivals. Sunday's Washington Redskins-Dallas Cowboys game averaged 18.4 million viewers, tossing NBC an easy victory for the night.

CBS is entering the new season — which officially started Monday night — with two of its top reality franchises showing signs of advanced age.

In addition to "Race," which has changed time slots three times since January, last week's debut of "Survivor: Cook Islands," featuring teams divided along ethnic lines, delivered 18 million viewers, the lowest premiere for the franchise since its 2000 debut.

'Race' can't outrun football

Cowboys vs. Redskins help Peacock beat rivals

By RICK KISSELL

CBS' "Amazing Race" kicked off its latest edition with solid numbers on its new night Sunday, but NBC dominated once again with football.
Nielsens for the NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins are subject to revision due to the live nature of sports, but it should come in at around a 7.3 rating in adults 18-49 and more than 18 million viewers overall. That's enough to help the Peacock easily beat rival nets, which aired a mix of firstrun and repeat programming.

The National Football League gave new carrier NBC a pair of huge games to open the season, and they have delivered impressive ratings. It's unlikely the net will be able to consistently match these numbers in coming weeks, though, as competish increases.

At CBS, the 10th season of "Amazing Race" averaged a preliminary 3.9 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 10.1 million viewers overall from 8:30 to 10 -- down slightly from the last two editions, which topped a 4 demo rating.

"Race" will regularly air from 8 to 9 this fall.

Fox was paced by "Family Guy" (prelim 4.5/11 in 18-49, 9.3 million viewers overall) and "The Simpsons" (prelim 4.2/11, 8.9 million).

ABC aired a firstrun two-hour special "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" from 8 to 10, averaging a 3.9/10 in 18-49 and 10.9 million viewers overall in the Nielsen prelims. Its season preem, along with the return of "Desperate Housewives," airs Sunday.

The fact that The Amazing Race would not score more viewers than Extreme Makeover is sad to me...I love the show and want to see it do well.

How do I move one of these adorable icons to my post?

Welcome TwoThumbsDawn, just click on the icons, and it will appear in the message.

I agree, the Race is soo much better than Extreme Makeover. But Sunday nights is just NOT the place for the Race to be. It needs to be Wednesday or Tuesday!

CBS PICKS UP "THE AMAZING RACE" FOR ITS 11TH SPRINT AROUND THE WORLD

CBS PICKS UP "THE AMAZING RACE" FOR ITS 11TH SPRINT AROUND THE WORLD

The Current 10th Edition of The Four-Time Emmy-Winning Reality Show Averaging More Than 10 Million Viewers in Its New Sunday Time Period

CBS has picked up the four-time Emmy-winning reality series THE AMAZING RACE for its 11th edition to be broadcast this spring.

THE AMAZING RACE 10, hosted by Phil Keoghan, premiered on Sunday, Sept. 17 delivering 10.13 million viewers, 4.6/10 in adults 25-54, 3.9/09 in adults 18-49 and 3.1/09 in adults 18-34. This was the best delivery for any AMAZING RACE broadcast in viewers since Feb. 28, 2006, in adults 25-54 since March 21, 2006, in adults 18-49 since March 28, 2006 and in adults 18-34 since March 14, 2006.

THE AMAZING RACE 10, part of CBS's new Sunday lineup which includes COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE, has helped boost the night in viewers and key demographics.

THE AMAZING RACE 10 features 12 Teams of two on a trek around the world for approximately 30 days. At every destination, each Team competes in a series of challenges -- some mental and some physical -- and only when the tasks have been completed will they learn their next destination. Teams who are farthest behind will gradually be eliminated as the contest progresses, with the first Team to arrive at the final destination winning $1 million.

Jerry Bruckheimer, Bertram van Munster, Jonathan Littman and Hayma Screech Washington are the executive producers for Bruckheimer Television and Earthview Inc., in association with Touchstone Television and Amazing Race Productions. THE AMAZING RACE was created by Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri.

Now I had thought they already picked up season 11, but this might just be confirmation of it.

Well According to TV guide's web site since Futon Critic is reorganizing its web site and Marc Berman is taking hte day off gives the Amazing Race 13.3 million viewers.

But the good news this week is that according to these numbers it had more viewers then Cold Case.

Heres what CBS has to say :  :js:

"The Amazing Race 10" Posts Week-to-Week Growth, Notching Its Best Delivery in Viewers Since May 2005
 THE AMAZING RACE 10 posted a 7.3/11 with 11.75m viewers, 4.9/11 in adults 25-54 and 4.0/09 in adults 18-49.
This is the best performance for THE AMAZING RACE in households and viewers since 5/10/05 (the finale of THE AMAZING RACE 7), in adults 25-54 since 2/28/06 (the premiere of THE AMAZING RACE 9) and in adults 18-49 since 3/14/06 (THE AMAZING RACE 9).  Compared to last week's episode, THE AMAZING RACE 10 was up +14% in both households (from 6.4/10) and adults 18-49 (from 3.5/09), +11% in adults 25-54 (from 4.4/10) and added +1.18m viewers (from 10.57m, +11%),

With final number out (which Puddin beat me to, does she sleep?)

The show did drop from teh fast Nationals, and cold case actually improved.  But the data was probably screwed up due to the delay.

But still for AR some really good results.  Especially considering tis harder for fans to catch teh show now thanks to the East Coast being delayed.

So keep watching.

The THing is as annoying as hell it is to watch with dealys for the east coast due to football, the ratings have been good, better then in the last two seasons.  So I hate to push for a change.

What I would need to see is if the East Coast is averaging less or more viewers percentage wise then the West Coast.

If so, the delays in Football on the schedule might actually keep people from changing to the other networks since they will have missed parts.

In fact last week was the biggest delay yet, and 60 minutes had the best ratings its had in years, and so did AR.

That suggest the possability that delay is keeping Football fans (who usually wont switch over to another program if the game isn't over keep watching CBS shows.

If so, it might be worth the annoyance to keep AR right where it is.

As much as it sucks for us fans having to wait, for hte show an dput up with parts of hte coma inducing 60 minutes (the show seems like 60 years).

But if the CBS games alst long it really does inprove the holdover.

SO I can I will put up with delays to see my show get better ratings.

For Puddin

Simpsons Fast Nationals were 6.15 million for the first half hour, and the normal half hour was 10.43 million.

Which is down from the year before.

Because of the delay in Football Fast Nationals viewer totals aren't available, just break downs in teh hour for groups and percentage of households which Kogs provided above.

Tomorrow final numbers will come in and I will report them.

TAR ratings dropped sharply because of weak lead-in and lead-out. Last week
we had more than 12 million viewers and we had 9+ million viewers last
night. CBS is probably right that only the all stars can save TAR.

TAR 10 ratings:

Week 1: 6.4/10 (first half hour) and 6.3/9
Week 2: 6.6/10
Week 3: 7.8/12 (8:34 to 9:34) (8.5/13--CBS 8 to 9)
Week 4: 6.4/10
Week 5: 7.4/11 (8:22 to 9:22) (8.1/12--CBS 8 to 9)
                              (8.2/12--CBS 9 to 10)
Week 6: 6.8/10
Week 7: 8.3/13 (8:20 to 9:20) (8.2/13--CBS 8 to 9)
                              (8.8/13--CBS 9 to 10)
Week 8: 7.7/11 (8:31 to 9:31) (8.5/12--CBS 8 to 9)
                              (8.3/12--CBS 9 to 10)
Week 9: 6.8/10
Week10: 7.9/12 (8:22 to 9:22) (8.9/13--CBS 8 to 9)
                              (8.6/13--CBS 9 to 10)

"THE AMAZING RACE 10" CROSSES THE FINISH LINE WITH DOUBLE DIGIT PERCENTAGE INCREASES IN ALL KEY MEASURES
OVER "THE AMAZING RACE 9" FINALE

"The Amazing Race" Delivers This Edition's Best Performance in Viewers
and Households

THE AMAZING RACE 10, with best friends Tyler and James first to cross the finish line, posted double-digit percentage increases over last spring's finale of "The Amazing Race 9," according to preliminary Nielsen Live Plus same-day ratings for Sunday, Dec. 10.

Editors Note:  Due to late running football in most East Coast and Central time zone markets, ratings are tentative and subject to change.

At 8:30 PM, THE AMAZING RACE 10 finale (8.0/12, 12.90m) delivered a 5.0/11 in adults 25-54 and 4.0/09 in adults 18-49. If the ratings hold, this is the best delivery for any edition of THE AMAZING RACE 10 in households and viewers and matches the second best performance in both adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.

Compared to the finale of "The Amazing Race 9," (5/17/06 from 8:00-10:00PM), THE AMAZING RACE 10 finale was up +51% in households (from 5.3/08), +25% in adults 25-54 (from 4.0/10), +18% in adults 18-49 (from 3.4/09), +13% in adults 18-34 (2.7/07 from 2.4/07) and added +3.91m viewers (from 8.99m, +43%).

Final ratings for THE AMAZING RACE 10 will be available tomorrow.

Stronger finish
for 'The Amazing Race'

Finale for CBS reality show jumps 18 percent

By Toni Fitzgerald
Dec 11, 2006

Last May, CBS’s “Amazing Race” finale aired in one of the toughest timeslots on television, its final hour competing with Fox’s “American Idol” and ABC’s “Lost,” both of them big hits. The season-ender didn’t do so hot, averaging a 3.4.

Last night, having moved from Wednesday to Sunday at 8 p.m. this season, the 10th edition of “Race” saw a nice boost for its finale. It averaged a 4.0 in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen overnights, up 18 percent over last year and boosting its season average after two straight seasons of decline.

Through the penultimate episode, “Race” had been averaging a 3.8, 9 percent ahead of season nine’s 3.5 average last year, when it bounced from Tuesday to Wednesday and never really built much steam. The fall 2005 edition of “Race” averaged a 4.3, also down from the spring before.

Certainly a more consistent timeslot, Sundays at 8 p.m., where the competition isn’t as killer as it was for the two-hour finale last year, helped push up this year’s numbers. Though it faced “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC, “Race” got a nice lead-in from “60 Minutes,” where the football crowd often lingered after CBS’s late NFL games. Many also stayed around for “Race.”

CBS has decided that the next edition of “Race” will be an all-star game, with couples like Rob and Amber returning. All-stars usually signal a franchise in need of help, and the season finale bump is a promising first step.

Meanwhile, football led NBC to a first-place finish for the night among viewers 18-49 with a 6.2 average rating and a 15 share. ABC finished second at 4.3/11, CBS third at 4.0/10, Fox fourth at 3.1/8, Univision fifth at 1.4/3 and CW sixth at 1.2/3.

As a reminder, fast nationals measure timeslot and not actual program performance. CBS and NBC both aired football last night, which bled into other timeslots, therefore their numbers may adjust significantly when final ratings come out tomorrow.

CBS took the 7 p.m. hour with a 4.5 rating for “60 Minutes.” NBC was second that hour with a 3.1 for “Football Night in America,” ABC third with a 2.8 for “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and Fox third with a 2.2 average for repeats of “American Dad” (1.9) and “The Simpsons” (2.5). CW and Univision tied for fifth that hour at 1.2, CW for an hour of “Reba” and Univision for the first hour of its four-hour special “Aun Hay Mas: Homenaje a Raul Velasco.”

NBC took the lead for good during the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.4 average for NFL pregame and the first 45 minutes of its game between the Cowboys and Saints. ABC was second with a 4.2 for its first hour of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” CBS third with a 4.0 for “Race” and Fox fourth with a 3.7 for “Simpsons” (4.1) and “Dad” (3.3). CW came in fifth with a 1.5 for “7th Heaven” and Univision sixth with a 1.3 for its second hour of “Velasco.”

At 9 p.m., NBC led again, building to a 7.8 rating among 18-49s for football. ABC closed the gap with a 6.3 for its second hour of “Home Edition,” with CBS third with a 3.7 for “Cold Case,” Fox fourth with a 3.4 for an hour of “Family Guy” repeats, Univision fifth with a 1.7 for another hour of “Velasco,” and CW sixth with a 0.9 for a repeat of “America’s Next Top Model.”

At 10 p.m., NBC led once again, this time with a 7.4 rating for football. ABC was second with a 4.0 for “Brothers & Sisters,” CBS third with a 3.8 for “Without a Trace” and Univision fourth with a 1.5 for the last hour of “Velasco.”

NBC also finished first for the night among households, averaging a 10.0 rating and a 16 share. CBS was second at 9.3/14, ABC third at 7.5/12, Fox fourth at 4.0/6, CW fifth at 2.3/3 and Univision sixth at 1.9/3.
