Well. I'm not much help here--these are too little for me!
The 3rd thumbnail of JVJ does seem to be at the starting line though...

Well that was weird--was everybody locked out??
I think that that last one is overlooking Ushuaia--lots of blue roofs there...

GEORGIA PEACH, that would all make sense if there wasn't a sighting in Tierra del Fuego National Park near Ushuaia on the afternoon of Nov. 26. That puts a total monkey wrench in any timeline that goes to/from Antarctica. There just isn't time unless a charter flight left from Punta Arenas and dropped everyone off in Ushuaia on the way back.

But could they EVEN do it with a charter flight--is there time for that?? Do we think there is an elim in Ushuaia on the 26th? afternoon 11/26 (or even very early AM 11/27?)--flight to Punta Arenas--assume charter 11/27--overnight hop to Antarctica 11/28--back to Ushuaia for some reason If weather allowed--would they have time? Or is that a near impossibility? Or maybe they went to Punta Arenas and couldn't go out because of the weather, so TPTB will never show that....

GEORGIAPEACH, I think you are forcing your thinking too narrowly into what you want the answer to be. Look at the accumulated evidence and see what conclusions are likely. I think you will decide that pit stop #3 is in PUNTA ARENAS, probably starting the evening of Nov. 25. The teams then go to USHUAIA and not King George Island or Antarctica. I expect them to leave USHUAIA on the 936pm flight out on Nov. 28.
What are the likely transportation options? I have been scouring the Internet and I have found some more that are interesting. There is a second bus company in Puntas Areans which has connecting service to USHUAIA on the 4 days that were not serviced by Pacheco Bus Company. This service leaves at 830am instead of 730am and probably takes at least the 12 hours of the direct bus. Also, in addition to the LAN flights on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday from PUNTA ARENAS to USHUAIA, I have discovered that DAP "In summer, it flies Twin Otters to Ushuaia Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only (US$100). It also has extensive charter services. " That could be the answer on how teams get there relatively fast since as has been clarified for me Nov. 26 was a Sunday when no regular flights are scheduled and the teams must get to USHUAIA to be sighted that afternoon.
What would one see and do in and around PUNTAS ARENAS? The most interesting thing is too far away, the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine 250 miles north. Although Punta Arenas is a mid-sized city at 120,000 inhabitants, it does not have a wealth of top-notch tourist attractions nearby. The best to me is visiting the penguin colony at Magdalena Island 25 km away in the Strait of Magellan. I'll bet that van Munster/Doganieri found something to do in Punta Arenas, maybe an eating challenge.

It's looking like no Antarctica. Because if South Pole = Antactica And Southermost point in South America = Ushuaia Then "boarderline south pole" = Ushuaia There was an isolated bout of high winds and rain on the 27th so if that was the day they wanted to go to Antactica it may have had to been cancelled. Apologies to Slowhatch, I now see you pointed this out yesterday!

There was an isolated bout of high winds and rain on the 27th so if that was the day they wanted to go to Antactica it may have had to been cancelled. Well, this purely .....sucks. I'll bet that is exactly what happened--they probably were all ready for it and DARN weather messed us up! But if the Antarctica trip would have been the 27th. why were they in Ushuaia on the 26th?? Maybe this explains the longer time in Ushuaia? They had an extra day to kill? Any now like the roadblock in Mauritius--we may never know! 11/23 San Pedro 11/24 travel day 11/25 Punta Arenas 11/26 arr Ushuaia-park+zodiac boats 11/27 ?? 11/28 still in Ushuaia Sorry Chateau--this can't begin to compare with your work of art timetable!

How long would it take by BOAT from Punta to Ushuaia? Too long, right?
Darn, can't even say they crossed the Strait of Magellan...

This looks like more than just a magazine shop at the airport.
It looks like a full fledged bookstore. Since the shot is dated November 20th (race start day) I'm thinking that they may have had to do some serious research before catching their flights.

We've got a couple of real bookstores in our airport--anybody know about Miami? From a blog: My annoyance with the Miami airport continued the next morning as I attempted to find American's international check-in line. That proved to be roughly a mile from the ticket counter where the hotel van had dropped me off. Once I actually got in line, things were fairly quick, leaving me plenty of time to discover just how mediocre the selection at the airport bookstore was. (I had plenty of reading matter with me, so this wasn't a real problem. It just deprived me of the pleasures of bookstore browsing.)

Chateau, could you possibly enhance the picture of the film crew at the entrance to the Tierra park, if you can? I keep having nightmares that I'm seeing something that looks a lot like a haystack/bale....

Ah, GEORGIAPEACH, you answered your own questions correctly each time. It's hardly necessary for me to point out: 1. That it would take approximately 1.5 days for a boat travelling at 20 mph to get from PUNTA ARENAS to USHUAIA via the most direct routing. 2. That you go down the Strait of Magellan until you diverge into one of several different channels to continue south, then west, then southeast, then east, then north toward USHUAIA. You never cross the Strait to the other side.
