Reality for Canadians
« on: October 03, 2005, 06:00:20 PM »
Canadians might be able to apply for US shows such as Survivor.“U.S. networks have restricted their reality shows to U.S. citizens. Burnett says some of it is because of legalities — Canadians might not be bound to the same contractual restrictions — but really it’s all about ratings. The presumption was nobody in Texas or Florida or California wants to cheer for a final four tribal member from, say, Brampton, Ont.”

I think they would cheer for a Canadian, especially those who live in the upper half of the US :t-up:

I think opening it up to Canadians is a great idea.  Expands the audience.  Plus everybody likes the funny way Canadians say words like "about" and "against".

I think as a Canadian myself theres a miscommunication as
to the way we speak  |( at least in the area I'm from.
No one I know says 'aboot' like in the comedy shows
about Canadains. But then again Canadains see Americans
from another angle too.

As for Canadians getting to be on
reality television, I'd be the first one to out wit or win a
race around the world.
The tribe has spoken....

The legalities are really taxes, If the winner is not a US resident they dont pay taxes.  I learned this by watching the WSOP Raymer and Moneymaker lost a pretty big chunk of their respective 2.5 and 5 Mill to UncleSamerman (sorry had to do it) where as if a european wins the ride away with the whole bundle of cash.

The best thing about forums is the witty, thought provking commentary by it's members.

If it means rooting for the underdog, I'll root for Canadians. (That means they'll be the first one axed. Always happens to my personal favorites. And it sucks, too! :()

Tanks for your great sense of humor!  {l{
(humour? I have a Canadian friend who spells it like that.) But like puddin says, spelling doesn't matter here!  I'm a good speller, but do use lotsa shortcuts for posting & emails.  Like enuf, probly, lotsa,  B:) B:)

If Survivor was held in the United States somewhere (Survivor - Maui?), that would make the winner - wherever he or she is from - subject to United States income tax.  Income earned in the U.S. by non-residents is included in taxable income on Form 1040-NR.

I'm wondering why it would really matter to the powers-that-be at Survivor.  They're not obligated to have a U.S.-taxable winner, after all.
