TAR 23 Ratings Information
« on: October 02, 2013, 11:36:50 PM »
We knew this day was coming.

CBS is not really providing overnight ratings numbers for its shows this year.
The earliest we may get is viewers in live plus three days; but CBS is saying in a press release Monday that they're getting the most complete information about viewership when they're about to include online or alternative platform data that takes in 30 days after broadcast.

So if you are wondering, I have been checking for information that is more than the overnights (which we would get Monday mornings) or at least the weeklys (which we'd usually get on Tuesdays) and it looks as if the earliest we may see data from CBS would be live plus three days or later. I have a feeling I won't be able to access the real data since I'm not in the advertising business, or the television business, but maybe some of the others will be able to poach that information from time to time.

TAR23 Ratings Thread - Prelim Numbers Have Episode 3 at Series Low
« Reply #2 on: October 14, 2013, 11:39:13 AM »
After TAR23 opened with the series' lowest season premiere numbers ever, last night's episode 3 may have garnered the series' lowest ratings ever.

According to preliminary ratings, the episode got a 1.8 18-49 rating with 8.07 million viewers.
That number could still get adjusted up with final ratings tomorrow, but it could still match the 1.9 series low from episode 2 of TAR22 which aired against the Oscars last February.

TVbytheNumbers:
Quote
The Amazing Race garnered a series low 1.8 down 25 percent  from last week’s 2.4.

I hope the ratings improve. I think Sunday Night Football was popular last night, Tom Brady vs Drew Brees.

It was Dallas/Washington on NBC and Detroit/Boston in the MLB Playoffs on FOX last night. Brady/Brees preceded 60 minutes on CBS.

What affected the entire CBS Sunday schedule was the 16 million plus viewers who watched the season premiere of The Walking Dead on cable Sunday night. What we won't know for a couple of weeks is the level of time shifted viewing last night into the week or month ahead for the TAR episode last night.

No. Sunday night is our best niche EVER. It saved us.

Looks like TAR has been taking major poundings from AMC this season. First by Heisenberg (for the premiere), and now, zombies.

Sadly, The Amazing Race's viewership ratings will probably never go back up to 10 million due to a good line-up of programming on Sundays since forever, but you know that cliché phrase, "times are tough". Sunday Night NFL, The Walking Dead on AMC, Once Upon A Time & Revenge on ABC, and even Duck Dynasty reruns on A&E are trying to squish TAR ratings to cancellation.

But you know what, TAR will do better this Sunday. If it can reach 9.5 million viewers on the second Leg, it is possible for them to score a higher audience base. TAR4's ratings were way worse than this and let's make magic happen and pray that Norway will capture America's hearts.

If the ratings continue to drop, I wonder how much wonder it will last?

Judging from a few other message boards that I frequent, I notice with each subsequent season, the number of posts have been decreasing, along with fewer people posting about it. All of this, are not good signs.

To be honest I don't see The Amazing Race getting old, or getting cancelled somehow... The variety in teams, locations, tasks, everything that is basic to the show is something that at least in my opinion will never get old enough to be cancelled...

Episode 2 was helped by an NFL game that was the "highest-rated program on television in the metered markets since the 2013 Academy Awards," and The Walking Dead didn't premiere yet.

I don't expect this Sunday's episode to get a big bump.

The CBS doubleheader games aren't that good this week.  A long NFL overrun will push TAR into direct competition with The Walking Dead on the east coast, and The Walking Dead will easily beat TAR.  It also doesn't help that NBC has a strong Sunday night game this week.

Something y'all seem to forget. Over half of all US households now have the capacity to time shift viewing, not to mention online viewing of streaming video after broadcast.
CBS in particular (through CBS's CEO Les Moonves) has stated that they're looking at Live plus seven and all platforms within 30 days as to how many people are viewing CBS shows. We don't get to see that information unless CBS tells us since Nielsen hasn't yet moved into the all platform measurements.
The other thing to realize is that all the networks are having the same level of decrease in live plus same day numbers, especially on Sundays, which is due to a number of factors including cable programming.
The other thing is that TAR continues to attract the high income households which is a ratings goldmine for advertisers; for example, Ford Motor Company (as its called these days) is a sponsor of TAR and Hawaii Five-0 and TAR still has Travelocity as a sponsor as well, per the closing credits. TAR makes money for CBS, and that is the bottom line.

The rating numbers this week appear to be about the same as last week, maybe up slightly. The good news is that it beat everyone for the night except football and 60 minutes. The bad news is that it's about the same numbers as last week.

That's just the demo (18-49).

Per TVLine.com quoting CBS, the overall audience was up 10 percent, to over 9 million, and of course, we'll have to see what effect the additional 15 minute delay in some markets have on the final numbers.

(As an aside, TAR had about 2 million more eyeballs than The Mentalist at 10/10:30, so in terms of view viewing that night, it was one of the better viewed broadcast shows. (And of course, with Indy-Denver playing on NBC Sunday Night Football, that would have still attracted a larger audience than a typical Sunday Night game.

No adjustment in the demo, so this week's episode ties last week's series low.   :'(

8.87 million viewers and a 1.9/5 18-49 rating.

Boosted by a big NFL Overrun and even up against "The Walking Dead" at 9pm in half the country, episode 6 garnered the highest ratings since episode 2.

From TV By the Numbers:
Episode 6 attracted 9.38 million viewers with a 2.1/5 in the demo.

From CBS' official press release, I think maybe the 2nd or 3rd time this season they've included TAR in the weekly ratings release.

Quote
THE AMAZING RACE
  • THE AMAZING RACE posted its second-best deliveries of the season in viewers (9.38m), adults 25-54 (2.9/06) and adults 18-49 (2.1/05) behind the Oct. 6, 2013 broadcast.

This is showing the effect of multiple cable and broadcast channels having special programming against TAR in that time slot.

Still want to see the time shifted viewing numbers, because I suspect that with those number the total viewership and demo numbers are more consistent than the live numbers.

Another potential series low for TAR.
Prelim numbers from TVbytheNumbers has TAR with 7.99 million viewers and a 1.5/4 18-49 rating.

That 1.5 beats TAR's previous series low in the demo, a 1.8.  It is also a potential 0.5 drop from last week's 2.0 rating.

Bottom line: HORRIBLE numbers for TAR.
Regardless of strong competition, because TAR has been in this same timeslot and gone up against the same competition for years.  And about The Walking Dead?  TAR23 had its 2nd and 3rd most watched episodes when it went up directly against The Walking Dead at 9pm in the Eastern US.

Better casting is at least a start to help bring viewers back.  So yes, they need to steal borrow the casting people from ActiveTV because TARAu (and TARPh) have had excellent casts.

I did see an article about a week ago that said households that watched TAR had the third highest income of any of the network shows. It also said that advertisers were paying a somewhat higher price for their commercials because of that. It's not much, but it may offset the decline in viewers to some extent. It's probably why Ford does all the car promotion on the show.

I'd post the article, but I can't find it any more.

Not to mention the fact that it was up against Manning vs Brady XIV. But that shouldn't be enough to dump it to under 8 M.  Sunday's double-header pushes the show to completely air opposite a game where the teams have a combined total 7 wins out of 21 or 22.  Next week's finale, IMO, will really prove or show the overall outcome of everything.  It will air opposite a huge NFL game that replaced a horrible one.

I'd say no for now.  Well, I wouldn't mind seeing it on weeknights again, but where would you put it, is the question. Unlike earlier in the show's run, there are other shows that would beat it, mainly the Voice.  DWTS is probably going to win, and then the other half of the week, you have X-Factor and AI.  Since Thursday is no longer good for Survivor, as mentioned elsewhere, you could put TAR there.  That would be its best spot, given the 2-hour nature of the other reality shows that share an audience.  Sadly, the current CBS Thursday line-up is too good to change that.  Not to mention the fact that FOX has used the 9:00 slot for a results show.

I guess we're stuck with having it on Sunday for the remainder of the series.  If TPTB has an expection for the show where it's not a big deal to get crushed in the ratings, then TAR is fine.  Otherwise, it could be the nature of the show over what it's up against.  Hopefully next year in the spring we'll get a better look at the ratings.  No football, but just a pre-emption, the Academy Awards, and hoops & golf overruns to worry about.  But if NBC decides to replace The Apprentice with The Voice, that won't be good either, but TV isn't the NFL, so there's that bit of good news.

TAR comes in 3rd with a median income of $75,700. Behind comedies Modern Family ($81,100) on ABC and Parks & Recreation ($81,000) on NBC. On the other end of the scale is FOX's animation line up (Bob's Burgers is $48,000, The Simpsons is $54,100 with the others in between) and 48 Hours ($54,000) on CBS. The general trend is that critically acclaimed shows are watched by higher income households.

Not to sound like an aristocratic jerk but by the looks of that list I watch a lot of shows in the higher income list.

I often wonder what the state of TAR would've been had CBS thought of moving TAR to Sunday in 2004. They originally were going to have Season 6 start on Saturday nights immediately following Season 5 (whew!) but instead chose to push the season back to November sweeps following the general election. That resulted in a rare winter sweeps finale, three weeks before Season 7 (Rob & Amber Show).

Instead they moved it back to Tuesday.  IIRC, Seasons 6-7 were the series best seasons ratings wise; A Sunday move with football as a lead-in, that could've resulted in an epic run for the show that would have continued today.  Back then, Sunday football was on ESPN (horrible match ups), but Desperate Housewives was a hit show (I think that was Sunday as well) so some conflict there.

Anyway, if the ratings are bad, it's because of real-life and the season as a whole; not so much because it's opposite NBC SNF or the Oscars.  It hurts the numbers, but if this season had aired on Wednesday, it would've been pulled from the fall line-up.

Not football on a competing network, but football on CBS itself leading into primetime.  The audience from football usually sticks around for primetime which starts immediately after every other week, especially when TAR gets promoted a little bit during the morning and afternoon games.

Football on NBC hasn't really affected TAR that much, it's just that TAR's audience has been slowly declining (slower than the rest of broadcast primetime), but in the last two seasons has taken a sharper dip than usual. =(

Moonves has made clear that CBS now looks at same day plus three, same day plus seven and same day plus 30; and they've found that generally, all programming on the average doubles their audience with plus 30 playback plus downloads and streaming video. (CBS uses I-Tunes, Hulu plus, and CBS.com for post live broadcast since they do not offer cable "on demand." (and the CW half owned and all managed by CBS follows the same policy)
The advertisers are at live plus three days at the moment, but CBS is pushing hard for a switch to live plus seven days in the short term, and they're also pushing for more complete measurement for advertisers to use live streaming, downloads, and online viewing at websites to be included.
The other thing to keep in mind is that a number of basic cable and pay cable channels are airing original dramas, etc., on Sundays, and it's a bear to program my cable DVR for Sundays, especially with the NFL overruns. (Generally I'm having to record the first same-night repeat for Sunday cable shows; there's three shows I normally watch over the course of a week that I have trouble catching consistently that are on a network, and for those I'm having to use alternative viewing.

Preliminary data has the show drawing 10.4 million viewers! and a 1.9 demo rating.

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/12/02/tv-ratings-sunday-once-upon-a-time-stays-at-low-bobs-burgers-american-dad-fall/219341/

The Good Wife also had similar increases, but not the Mentalist, and Sunday Night Foorball was down substantially, and all this was even with the mid-season finale for The Walking Dead on cable. This suggests that part of the football audience also watches TAR, and presumably are using time shifted viewing.

As Peach mentioned above, the huge football lead-in helps.

Even if just a third of those 25+ million NFL viewers stay with CBS until TAR comes, it's a big boost for the show.

Especially when the match-ups were of two teams who previously had the best record in the league (flawless), even if they both fell below all-but flawless Seattle.  It helped that I doubt most people were switching to the NBC match-up of less interesting teams.

Speaking of which, with 2/3 of the episode running opposite a rather huge game, it'll be interesting to see what happens, but it was nice to see things above 10 M (after that rather large fall a week ago).

Finale ratings

TAR came second in its timeslots to NBC's football coverage (not too shabby)

These ratings are not final as some areas were delayed due to football earlier on CBS. Ratings are subject to change.

Lowest rated TAR finale ever:
9.21 million viewers and a 2.1/5 in the demo.
TAR23 averaged 9.0 million viewers and a 2.0 demo rating.
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/12/10/sunday-final-ratings-the-simpsons-family-guy-revenge-once-upon-a-time-betrayal-60-minutes-adjusted-down/221286/

That TAR23 consistently had sub-2.0s in the demo is the worrisome number since TAR has always been one of CBS' youngest shows. TAR also doesn't get a significant boost in +7 DVR ratings (watching DVRd episodes within 7 days of original airing).    Though no reality shows really get any big boosts in DVR watching anyway.
