Previously on The Amazing Race...

6 teams raced from Botswana to Switzerland...

Caroline & Jennifer and Bates & Anthony flirted. Chuck & Wynona argued with each other. Wynona had trouble at the mountain roadblock. There was a switchback at cheese hill. Bates & Anthony won a third leg in a row. Chuck & Wynona received a penalty for rolling down their cheese instead of using the sleds. Joey & Meghan came in during the penalty time and Chuck & Wynona were eliminated.

5 teams remain... Who will be eliminated next?

Bates & Anthony depart 1st at 2:50 AM. Make your way to the city of Dresden, Germany. When they arrive, they will make their way to the Ministry of Finance and pick a Ford Fusion where there will find their next clue.

Mona & Beth depart at 2:57 AM. They wonder why the country singers want to keep Bates & Anthony around.

Max & Katie depart at 3:01 AM. They came into the race thinking that they would win a lot of legs... lol that has worked out well.

All the first 3 teams are walking to the train station.

Caroline & Jennifer depart at 3:28 AM. They want to go to the F3 with Bates & Anthony.

The earliest train is at 5:26 AM. Everybody will be on the same train.

All teams board the train including Joey & Meghan. Joey finds it frustrating that they've been placing so low lol.

Bates' bag goes missing on the train... Luckily, Bates has his passport with him. Caroline or Jennifer do some flirting... "Do you want some thongs? Some women's underwear?" lol.

Anthony: "You can use my underwear any time you want."
Bates: "It's probably a little sticky..." UHHHHHHH. :stare

All teams are running to get a taxi. And they all get taxis. Max & Katie arrive at the Ford Fusions first. Teams have to get behind the wheel and answer 3 race inspired questions via the Ford's text feature. When they get the questions, they will get their next clue.

lol Max mentions his conservativeness and he mentions Rush. Max & Katie are getting a lot of airtime answering these questions. Teams must drive over 100 miles to the Brandenburg Gate for their next clue. :ascared

Joey & Meghan and Caroline & Jennifer arrive at the Ford Fusions.

lol Joey & Meghan are lucky that there's multiple choice or else they would probably be screwed. :lol3: Good thing that they're good at guessing, I guess.

Bates & Anthony and Mona & Beth arrive at the Fords.

Caroline & Jennifer and Joey & Meghan proceed to the Brandenburg Gate. Caroline & Jennifer wanted to wait for Bates & Anthony... why. :res: They leave anyways.

Bates & Anthony and Mona & Beth answer all the questions correctly and now they're off to Berlin.

Katie wants to win this leg to win 2 Ford Fusions.

Bates & Anthony are behind Caroline & Jennifer while driving. :res: :res: :res: Caroline & Jennifer say that they're not going to throw all their love around all day... Mhmm.

Max & Katie arrive at the gate first. Proceed to the Park Inn Hotel for the next clue. Lots of route info so far.

Caroline & Jennifer ask for directions. Bates & Anthony now are leading Caroline & Jennifer. Bates & Anthony accidentally lose Caroline & Jennifer because of a yellow/orange light. looooooooool. Now Caroline & Jennifer don't know where to go.

Commercial.

Man, I don't know who wins; but if Stealing Angels and the Hockey Bros both survive throughout the race, let's hope Jen/Caroline don't stop BEFORE the finish line for Bates/Anthony to cross that first!

And now we're back. Caroline & Jennifer go to get directions. They're disappointed at Bates & Anthony...

Max & Katie arrive at the Park Inn Hotel. Now they're going to the top of the building where they're going to base fly! When both teams have gone, they will get their next clue.

Joey & Meghan are the 2nd team to arrive at the gate. LOL. Mona & Beth are the 3rd team to arrive at the gate. Mona & Beth tell Bates & Anthony where the cluebox is. Caroline & Jennifer arrive shortly at the gate. Now they're all proceeding to the hotel.

Katie's going to be the first one to fall... And now it's Max's turn. Why is there a mouth camera LOL. I can see all up in their mouths. Detour!

Train Trials: At a museum, teams will have to lay toy train tracks. When the train has completed 1 cycle, then they will receive their next clue.
Font Follies: Transport 2 giant letters of the alphabet to Berline's Museum of Letters.

Max & Katie are off to the letters. Joey & Meghan arrive at the Park Inn. Meghan falls first. Mona & Beth arrive. Joey falls next and he's screaming. :lol3: "Again, again!" They're doing train. Bates & Anthony arrive. Mona & Beth finish their jump and are doing letters.

Max & Katie pick letters that are easy to carry because teams can't switch. They pick P and O. Joey & Meghan ask for directions. Mona & Beth see Max & Katie passing by with the letters. They don't know where the letter market is.

Bates & Anthony pick letters and Caroline & Jennifer pick letters as well. Caroline & Jennifer and Bates & Anthony are doing the detour together...

"Just don't bang your thing..." says Max as Katie bangs the letter. :lol3: They get directions. Max: "Don't be uncomfortable!" LOL.

Mona & Beth pick up their letters. Joey & Meghan arrive at the museum. There are a bunch of old trains in the museum. Joey & Meghan look for the conductor... The conductor has this face going on: :stare. :lol3: Joey & Meghan are having fun building train tracks.

Caroline & Jennifer picked S and K... bad letters to pick. :lol3:

Max & Katie arrive at the letter museum. The museum was in a mall. Max: "It was like the nerds hanging out... every Monday... at the museum and smoke a pipe." lol what. Max & Katie are done the detour in 1st. Proceed to the Salon Zur Wilden Renate.

Joey & Meghan finish building their train track. The train got derailed LOL. This is really fun to watch actually. A tree derailed their train. :lol3:

Max & Katie arrive at the club... bar thing. Roadblock. Teams will have to identify who said a famous quote. Then they will have to search through a maze and locate the white room where they will find their next clue attached to the wall...

Katie's doing the roadblock. She gets the question right and now she enters the labyrinth... It's dark and there are laser-like lights everywhere... This is trippy. Katie: "I'm thinking someone's going to jump out and they're going to get hurt because I'm going to punch them." :lol3:

Caroline & Jennifer and Bates & Anthony are getting directions... Anthony's letter fell over. The V fell over and cracked! Now they have to go back and get a new letter...

Commercial.

Max & Katie dominating, Meghan & Joey doing okay as well. No changes with Mona & Beth and Stealing Angels, who are struggling with Anthony & Bates, a major change. Looks like Rachel & Dave's record is safe (as are Eric & Jeremy's, though that probably would've been safe anyway).

And we're back... Caroline & Jennifer didn't want to leave Bates & Anthony but they continue anyway. Bates & Anthony go to do train.

We're back at the creepy labyrinth with Katie. The entire thing is just way too creepy. Katie hates haunted houses and Halloween... this must have been a nightmare for her lol. She's just crawling and going on ladders... She found a random door and she got into the white room. She got the clue and now they're off to Kurfurst... what. It's the pitstop. The name was too long. :lol3:

Mona & Beth are done the detour in 2nd! They wonder what would have happened if they broke their letters... Back with Joey & Meghan. The train makes it around once! They're out of the detour in 3rd! Meghan knows where the nightclub is. Caroline & Jennifer deliver their letters. They wonder who would go into that letter museum... :lol3: They're done the detour in 4th.

Meghan & Joey are at the nightclub. "Who wants to get trippin?" Joey: "Are we going to get high or something..."

Joey doesn't know the quote. It's in German. He goes to ask people... Stranger: "I thought you were the cat police." :lol3: Someone tells him Kennedy and it's right. Now Joey's going through the labyrinth...

Bates & Anthony go through 4 train track failures. LOL.

Mona & Beth are still lost. Beth: "Does your map... Does it read at all?" LOL.

Joey: "I feel like I'm in Alice in Wonderland or something..." Joey gets the clue. They're done the roadblock. They're off to the pit stop. Joey really liked the maze.

Caroline & Jennifer were thinking that the salon was a... hair salon or something LOL.

Bates & Anthony go through 9 attempts before they finish the detour. Holy cows. They're out of the detour in last.

Mona & Beth are still hopelessly lost. Really lost. Commercial.

Basically newer teams that struggled are in the front, and the better teams in the back.  Looked like Bates/Anthony got the last edit moved to Mona/Beth. Though it could be a foot race between the two.

lol Beth. "Don't ever do drugs!" Beth hears Anthony behind her. They're working on the roadblock together... Bad choice methinks. Anthony finds the white room first. Beth is right behind. Anthony & Bates get credited with a 4th place roadblock finish. Now they're both off to the pit stop... Mona & Beth are going to lose a footrace if it comes to that...

Bates & Anthony are just going to follow Mona & Beth...

OMG RACE TO THE PIT STOP. RACE. Bates & Anthony beat Mona & Beth............ awks. Mona & Beth look pissed. Bates & Anthony are team #4. Mona & Beth are the last team to arrive... Phil is leading them on... Phil: "Well, Bates & Anthony... I have some bad news for you two..."

WOW PHIL. WOW. He just tells them that they will have to keep competing against Mona & Beth! It's a NEL! :hearts: Mona & Beth say that they will need to find some way to get ahead of them...

And now we end off with really creepy and weird music.

4th - Bates & Anthony

Yes, as mentioned, a 3-hour lead mentioned in a preview means nothing. No way they're allowing someone to have that advantage with no more NEL or TBC remaining.

I think even if it's a 3/4 hour lead,they probably got delayed or only Max/Katie Joey/Meghann got on. I don't think
J/M is smart enough to find the quickest flight and Rollerderby is dead last.

This episode was a good episode not my favorite of the season. There was very little competition until the very end when Roller Derby and Hockey battled it out. The tasks were good and all, but I didn't get much entertainment as if they were all bunched up and competing.

I personally really liked this episode. Last episode was kind of a letdown for me, so this is a relief!

Task-by-Task Review:
Base Jump - It was okay...... I'm glad there weren't any heights-breakdowns that would segue to a commercial :res:
Detour - Both tasks seemed really interesting! Though the only reason the Letter choice was exciting was because of the flashing letters  and the Trains (MORE trains.. :lol3: ) task was a general yet great task as well!
Roadblock - It was.. weird  but it was cool!

Team-by-Team Review:
Max & Katie - FINALLY!! A 1ST-PLACE FINISH :hearts: :hearts:
Joey & Meghan - They finally climbed to the top as well for a change. Not to mention this is their first Top 3 finish!
Caroline & Jennifer - I was kind of sick of Jen feeling all bad for Bates & Anthony and how they're falling behind.. still like them.
Bates & Anthony - It was great to see them struggle! It's not that I hate them, but it's always nice to see a dominant team fall right to the back.
Mona & Beth - Still nothing from them, it's amazing. I don't like nor hate them. "Don't do drugs!"

Overall Review:
-I loved the fact that this was a night leg! :hrt:
-There was some obvious foreshadowing during the episode: Katie thinking about winning the leg with the new Ford's and Mona & Beth in a confessional saying to finish as hard as they've started the Race.
-Self-driving!!! :hrt:

Great episode!

Same here.  As much as I wouldn't have mind if they had kept winning permanently, it gives future episodes more of a competitive feel to it. OTOH, if there were two teams dominating, that might be a different story.

Can't really blame Bates & Anthony here, because most of the other teams that performed exceptionally well have been eliminated.  Haven't really seen anything like that since season 4 (before the remaining teams eventually got at least one win).  Either way, had one or two of them survived, then it would not have looked so much like they were the team to really beat.

If were thinking the same thing, I felt the episode gave a hint at who was going to U-turn who next leg.

I thought it was obvious that this was going to a non elimination leg, even though it would be so much better if they put those on boring processional legs like the previous one.  So we basically had a bit of drama with navigation and a detour all for nothing.

Othewise quite a good leg, which was a surprise after a slow start with yet another face down rapel, where they were actually just let down and didn't even have to move themselves at all.

Joey and Meghan are pretty good racers if they get decent directions from locals.  And those who say Joey is fake well what about those country singers when they started off, that looked like acting up for the cameras.  And this stupid romance alliance, I hate alliances anyway teams should race for themselves without receiving that much help.  This isn't Survivor, it's The Amazing Race and teams should concentrate on racing.

Oh and the questions were so damn easy (including multiple choice as well), you kind of expect idiot questions like that on these shows I guess.

When I saw it was at night time I was worried there was just going to be another huge bunch up the following morning, but it ended at night which was a relief.

This leg had some good visuals, but thankfully (unlike quite often these days) it didn't just depend on that and actually had what this race is meant to be about (navigation, a detour that wasn't so easy).  Roadblocks could have been more difficult I guess.

#JustSaying Mona & Beth did not go fool as the hockeys asked them where the clue in the Gate was. They just stopped, told them, and kept on going. They also gave children a great advice during the Roadblock. They are sooooo growing on and on for me. Hope they and Youtubes do it further altogether.

Mona and Beth getting to the pit-stop in 5th was kinda sad... But they were seriously so slow when alighting from their car. I don't know. If I were them, I would go in circles until I lose Bates and Anthony... Justsaying

I agree, this was a good episode, much better than I was expecting it to be. I thought this looked like a below average leg from the information we had and it was good to be surprised.

I thought the trivia questions were fairly tough. Ronald Reagan made his speech about tearing down the Berlin Wall all at least 25 years ago and Kennedy made his "Ich bin ein Berliner!" statement over 50 years ago. Since most of the racers are under 30 or just over it, they probably weren't old enough to remember them. I'm not sure those speeches get much coverage in schools these days. I knew the first two questions in the Ford because I'm over 40 and have a bit of an interest in history and politics, but for the third question, I would have had to guess about where it was said.

As for the Kennedy statement, I knew that one because I had heard that to the people of Berlin, they don't call themselves Berliners. A Berliner is what they call a jelly filled doughnut. So, when Kennedy tried to say "I am a Berlin citizen!", it came out as "I am a jelly filled doughnut!" I thought that was funny, so I remembered it. I wouldn't expect most people to know that and remember the line. Good story, however I looked it up in Wikipedia just now and it says that the statement is grammatically correct and that my remembered story was wrong.

By the time Mona went to the bar to ask who said the statement after all the earlier teams had done so, I half expected it to go like this:

Mona: "Who said ..."

15 or 20 bar patrons: "John F. Kennedy!"

I remember watching Kennedy's speech on Walter Cronkite. There was no controversy at the time. That didn't start till about 20 years later. You can speak Deutsch two different ways. Familiar or Formal. Familiar to family and close friend. Formal to anyone not in those groups. If Kennedy had been sitting on the lawn at Hyannis Port and said that.......then it would have meant he was a jelly donut. But he was making a very major speech, so it was very formal and meant he was saying that he was a citizen of Berlin.

The speech was in front of the Rathaus Schöneberg, which was the West Berlin City Hall. Estimates of almost a half a million people were there to hear the speech. There wasnt then or even now much room to cram that many people in there. A couple of months after Kennedy died, they renamed that area John F Kennedy Platz.

Reagen's speech was on a stage built right in front of the Brandenburg Gate, so he could see and be seen by people on both sides of the wall.

As a little note, that clue box was right in front of the U. S. Embassy, built after the reunification of Germany in the 90s.

Really amazing episode.

And the 3 hours lead...i think somthing is missing there, they (CBS) wouldn't provide that information with 1 week ahead. I am possible sure that all the teams will caught up to each other...They usually trick the viewers with these informations (remember "It is all come down to donkeys").

Btw I hope Mona and Beth can pass this obstacle, they should be more sneaky and they should mislead the hockey players.

Phil can still pull off a stone cold fakeout

Oh yes he can.  You never know when you're done or not. No more struts to the pitstop!

He's used the same fakeout for a few seasons now though.  All teams should know when he starts saying 'you've had a tough day' that means it's a non-elimination.  For an elimination he always just goes straight to the point and tells someone they are out.

I thought it was odd that just before they showed the teams arriving at the train station in Dresden they showed a clip of a Lufthansa plane landing.
Sloppy editing or was there some sort of travel shenanigans going on?

Didn't they train from Interlaken to Munich (via Basel) and then fly to Dresden from Munich?

What John F. Kennedy should have said was "Ich bin Berliner" ("I am a citizen of Berlin"). The world would have lost one of history's most comic moments if he had got it right.

They didn't show arrival at Dresden rail station. Teams changed at Interlaken Ost and arrived at Basel before switching to planes. See the Transportation thread for what actually happened. It was quite clear from the Amazing Line.

That'll teach me to watch with 2 tired kids who (by the way) did hog all of the popcorn.
After re-watching I realize I missed the subtle change of the Amazing Line from red to blue which apparently signifies a change in transportation mode.
Still think it strange that it wasn't mentioned in the episode.

Dont feel bad WP. I spent about 3 hours trying to work out train schedules between Basel and Munich. I did catch the flying from Munich to Dresden........but sure missed the flying from Basel to Munich.
