TAR 22 Ratings Thread
« on: February 18, 2013, 12:08:10 PM »
The overnight ratings are out for the TAR 22 premier and it's both good and bad news (mostly good I think) depending on how you look at it. The raw numbers from zap2it.com:

8 p.m.

CBS: "The Amazing Race" premiere (9.5 million, 5.6/9)
ABC: "Once Upon a Time" (7.5 million, 4.4/7)
FOX: "The Simpsons" (4.6 million, 2.5/4)/"Bob's Burgers" (4.1 million, 2.1/3)
NBC: "Betty White's Off Their Rockers" rerun (4.25 million, 2.6/4)

18-49 leader: "The Amazing Race" (2.4)

TAR tied 60 Minutes for most viewers of the night of the network shows but 60 Minutes had a slightly higher share of the viewers. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's down 14% from the TAR 20 premier last February and about the same as the TAR 21 premier ratings last fall.

Zap2it's take on the ratings:

The most-watched show on TV Sunday night probably wasn't on any of the broadcast networks. Nothing on ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC broke 10 million viewers, so there's a good chance "The Walking Dead" beat everything else on TV. The AMC series and the NBA All-Star Game on TNT probably will also have the top adults 18-49 marks of the night.

The premiere of the 22nd "Amazing Race" scored the best network numbers of the night for CBS, with ratings about even with its fall debut. "Once Upon a Time" and "Revenge" were up a little from last week for ABC, but they were still on the low side of their season averages. "The Good Wife" and "The Mentalist" were low for CBS as well.

deadline.com's take on the ratings (not sure why their ratings are so much lower):

The new season of The Amazing Race (2.4/6) started off at LA’s Griffith Observatory however the series itself did not get off on its best footing. Down 14% from last year’s February 19, 2012 Spring premiere, Sunday’s season 22 debut was the lowest debut ever for the long running CBS series. Not that it was that much of a slide. The September 30, 2012 season 21 premiere of the global competition series garnered a 2.5/6 matching a previous Race series low debut. With CBS’ primetime Sunday delayed 5 minutes in the Eastern and Central times zones due to an overrun from PGA Tour Golf, last night’s ratings could see a greater than usual adjustment in final numbers.

As The Amazing Race hit a low, ABC’s Once Upon A Time and Revenge (1.8/4) rose from one last night. Without facing off against the Grammys, the fantasy drama was bopped up 5% and the late night soap jumped 29% from last week’s series low for both shows. CBS’s dramas however did drop on Sunday.  Back after three weeks, The Good Wife (1.4/3) was down 7% – hitting a series low for the show. The Mentalist (1.5/4) was also down, falling 21% from its last original on January 27.. Both network news magazine shows also took a hit last night. Airing just after 7 PM, CBS’ 60 Minutes (1.3/4) was down 28% from its February 10 show while Dateline NBC was down 33% from its last Sunday original back on January 6.  Otherwise NBC showed back-to-back repeats of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers at 8 PM (0.9/2) and 8:30 PM (1.0/2) and a Saturday Night Live In The 90s: Pop Culture Nation (1.4/3) special. Starting the night with America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.5/4), which was down 17% from last week, ABC ended Sunday with a repeat of its new Anthony Edwards conspiracy drama Zero Hour (0.9/2)

One good thing to remember is that we beat Survivor for the premier episodes. Survivor had 8.9 million vewers and a 5.5/9 ratings share last Wednesday.

I was out all afternoon with Lieb (she had her semi-annual vet appointment) and we also had to deal with an unexpected snowfall that could have led to an icy coat on the roads coming back home.

The main thing to keep in mind, as we've mentioned in recent seasons, is that an increasing percentage of the available audience is recording shows to view later (a.k.a. time shifting) which is not included in the overnights; and the weekly numbers only include same day time shifted viewing (those are released on Tuesdays.)

The real numbers is the Live plus seven days number, which we're lucky to hear about at all although it has usually been once or twice a season. The advertisers use the live plus three day numbers to set advertising rates, which we often don't information on, either.

The most recent estimates I saw from Nielsen is that time shifting is now used by one half of all households.

So it's hard to figure out what value the numbers have these days, but this is all we have to work with.

I really think they should have more shameless advertisements using social media etc. TAR getting more than Survivor is good news already.

Final numbers are out (though there was some confusion over the numbers on some sites, so I waited for confirmation).

TAR
2.5 adults 18-49 0% change from last spring   (number one show on Sunday in both time slot and overall for the night)
3.4 in adults 25-54
9.567 million viewers up 160,000 from last spring

Ranked for the week
13th in viewers
14th in adults 18-49 (far more important).

Adults 18-49 in real viewer numbers
3.162 million adults 18-49 watched the hour.

Survivor had
3.034 million viewers in adults 18-49

Not the first time we have outperformed Survivor, but it is the first time a season opener has.

Once Upon a Time
2.987 million viewers 18-49.

I should have actual Live Plus 7 data in total viewers and demo for each episode this season.  But it will take two weeks for that data to come in.

I have a source who gets the numbers each week.  I was just to busy with real life to post any of them last season.

And a correct it isn't the Live plus 3 that sets ad rates.  It's the Commercial plus 3 that sets ad rates.  I have only ever seen this data for TAR once, and only a handful of times for any other show.  Generally the C# rating is going to be close to the results that are reported as Live Same day.  Sometimes a little lower, sometimes a tiny bit higher.

The reason is that the Live Same day numbers include a substantial number of people who use DVR to watch TAR that same night.  But only about 20% of those viewers count as thats the typical average who don't skip commercials.  Even with 3 extra days, of DVR viewing, due to the large number who skip commercials its usually just enough to push the data to equal the live Same day  numbers.

Ad buyers don't give a crap about the Live version of any numbers (the exception is those ads that are built within a show, product placement, like the beautiful Fords, that Damned Gnome from Travelocity and various airlines).

TAR also generally doesn't gain much in viewers even for the program after the first day.  Programs that are weekly competitions (survivor, TAR, American Idol, ect) generally have smaller percentage growth then scripted programming, as their does seem to be a rush to get the viewing in as fast as possible.

But overall even with DVR viewing, network tv is still losing viewers each and every year on average.  So you can't just compare the results of one week to the previous year.  You need to compare how that show is doing in relationship to that network that year.  For example CBS is down big time this year (once you remove the Super bowl), TAR could actually have done much lower numbers and still be a solid, solid performer for CBS.

I'm very impressed that TAR finished 13th for the week. It's been quite a while since it finished that high. I'm thinking that that people wanted to see a tropical island during the middle of winter. Also, the promise of 3 people quitting probably got others to watch.

Thanks for posting that, RaceUntilWeDie.

While the numbers look dismal, the Oscars killed everybody last night. I'll take away the good news that 60 Minutes and TAR were the only shows with over 5 million viewers last night and we held on to 2/3 of last week's audience. Hopefully some of the ones watching the Oscars recorded TAR for later viewing (like I did).  :) Still, I doubt if TAR will be in the top 30 shows this week, since it's situation normal for shows on the other 6 days of the week.

Here's last year's numbers for comparison (as provided by theschnauzers in the TAR 20 ratings thread):

This week's numbers are so low, that CBS did not release a press release for either the overnights or the weekly finals (or at least as of yet.) TV By The Numbers, however, reports the follow as final numbers for episode 2:
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/02/28/sunday-final-ratings-amazing-race-adjusted-up-academy-awards-final-ratings/122223/

    8:00PM    ABC    Oscar's Red Carpet Live    6.2    16    24.070
       CBS    The Amazing Race    2.2    5    7.710
       FOX    The Simpsons -R    1.6    4    3.830
       NBC    The Celebrity Apprentice -R    0.8    2    2.530

The 2.2/5 is the 18-49 rating/share, and the 7.710 is the total audience in 000s. And of course these numbers are only for the live plus same day audience, and does not include any time shifted viewing after Sunday night. (Which is more likely this week since the Oscars do run past prime-time.)

So we were down about a million viewers from last year, but the Oscars Red Carpet show was up 7 million viewers. Also, as we've seen the viewer trend overall is downward, so that accounts for some of the losses. So, overall, I'd say it was a one night ratings dip due to being against the Oscars and next week should be much better. I also expect the ratings will get adjusted upward in the fibal ratings for last night.

As it turns out, on the east coast feed, if you switched to the Oscars once TAR was over, you only missed one award (Best Supporting Actor); most of the time before that was for the Red Carpet pre-show, and Seth MacFarland's opening. (And from what I've read, I really did not miss much.)

The thing is that the Oscars run so long (4 hours) that the TAR viewership on the west coast is also affected, and they're getting the final major awards during the time TAR is airing there. So that may have had a larger impact relatively since TAR is rarely affected on the west coast.

6.95 is a really scary number for a "live" reality competition on awards night... hopefully it will bounce back up like season 14. :stare

Broadcast viewership and cable viewership is always interesting, because shows like TAR got hurt by the Oscars, while "The Walking Dead" grew its 18-49 audience by 0.1 from last week and was completely unaffected by the Oscars:

http://thefutoncritic.com/ratings/2013/02/26/sundays-cable-ratings-the-walking-dead-continues-reign-for-amc-449115/cable_20130224/

The Walking Dead - AMC
11.014 million viewers, #1; 7.243 million adults 18-49 (5.7 rating), #1

I wonder if TAR will take any hit when March Madness over-runs make it go head-to-head against a juggernaut like "The Walking Dead."

Cable viewership is usually more loyal than simple broadcast like Comedy Central or Bravo.

But I'm always rooting for TAR to win over Sunday nights. :hearts:

What's causing these low viewers? I'm not an expert on this stuff.
Yikes... TAR isn't looking so good right now if The Mentalist at 10:00 is close to beating it. :(

There were about 13 million viewers watching a miniseries on History produced by Mark Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey, The Bible, and there was another 10+ million watching The Walking Dead on another cable channel at the same time.

That better explains what is going on; and Les Moonves predicted in a speech yesterday that advertisers would be moving to the same day plus seven within a year.

"THE AMAZING RACE" IS SUNDAY'S TOP BROADCAST IN ADULTS 18-49

"Race" Leaps +31% in Viewers and +26% in Adults 18-49 from Last Week

"The Good Wife" Posts Gains in Viewers and Demos From Last Original Episode and Tops the First Hour of ABC's Heavily Promoted Premiere of "Red Widow"

"The Mentalist" Places First in Viewers, Also Ahead of "Red Widow"

CBS Places First on Sunday in Viewers, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54

THE AMAZING RACE posted significant week-to-week growth in viewers and key demographics, topping the night's broadcast competition in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for March 3.

            60 MINUTES was first in households (7.7/13), viewers (11.95m), adults 25-54 (2.7/07) and adults 18-49 (1.7/05).

THE AMAZING RACE was first in households (5.4/08), viewers (9.12m), adults 25-54 (3.2/07) and adults 18-49 (2.4/06).  Compared to last week, THE AMAZING RACE 22 was up +32% in households (from 4.1/06), +19% in adults 25-54 (from 2.7/06), +26% in adults 18-49 (from 1.9/04) and added +2.17m viewers (from 6.95m, +31%).

THE GOOD WIFE was first in households (5.9/09), viewers (8.94m) and adults 25-54 (2.3/05), and tied for second in adults 18-49 (1.6/04, with NBC).  Compared to the last first-run episode on Feb. 17, 2013, THE GOOD WIFE was up +7% in households (from 5.5/08), +15% in adults 25-54 (from 2.0/04), +23% in adults 18-49 (from 1.3/03) and added +590,000 viewers (from 8.35m, +7%).  THE GOOD WIFE topped the first hour of ABC's heavily promoted premiere of "Red Widow" in all key measures.

At 10:00 PM, THE MENTALIST was first in households (6.0/10) and viewers (9.10m), and was second in both adults 25-54 (2.2/05) and adults 18-49 (1.5/04).  THE MENTALIST also finished ahead of "Red Widow" in viewers and key demos.

For the night, CBS was first in households (6.2/10), viewers (9.77m) and adults 25-54 (2.6/06), and tied for first in adults 18-49 (1.8/05, with FOX).

And as promised

DVR results episode #1
TAR
Live + SD - 9.567 million viewers
Live + 7 - 10.639 million viewers
a gain of 1.072 million viewers, a percentage gain of 11.2%.  Thats far below what scripted shows get.  It took a gain of 2 million viewers to enter the top twenty five list (which place #25 was the Good Wife).

Live + SD - 2.5 adults 18-49
Live + 7 - 3.0 adults 18-49
A .5 gain, a percentage gain of 20%, still considerably below average for scripted shows.  A .8 gain would make the top twenty five, a percentage gain of 40% would make the top twenty five based on percentage list.

Heck nearly three shows on the CW got equal or higher gains in viewers and those three same shows equalled or bettered TAR's gains in adults 18-49.  Vampire Dairies which normally gets under 3 million viewers gain 1.3 million viewers, and .8 adults 18-49, Arrow which normally scores about 3,1 million viewers gained a million viewers and .5 adults 18-49, and Supernatural which normally has 2.1 million viewers gained a million viewers and .5 adults 18-49.

Of course TAR overall numbers are much higher, but it highlights how little growth TAR gets from DVR viewing past the first day.

A total of 10.6 million with the current level of time shifting, compared to the levels 3 or 4 years ago when there was a lot less time shifting going on, shows little gain or loss. I have to take that as good news because two cable shows on Sunday night (The Walking Dead and The Bible miniseries, both of which aired at the same time as TAR) had roughly 25 million plus between them.

That's how much the broadcast nets viewership has eroded.

Here are the initial overnight ratings for last night. TAR had numbers similar to last week, maybe a little higher. TAR continues to win it's time slot comfortably and had a good 18-49 rating. I expect that it will be adjusted upward in the final numbers.

ABC: "America's Funniest Home Videos" (6.3 million, 3.7/7)
FOX: "Bob's Burgers" rerun (2.1 million, 1.2/2)/"American Dad" (3.3 million, 1.7/3)
NBC: "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" rerun (2.2 million, 1.6/3)

18-49 leader: "60 Minutes" (1.6)

8 p.m.

CBS: "The Amazing Race" (9.2 million, 5.5/9)
ABC: "Once Upon a Time" (7.45 million, 4.5/7)
FOX: "The Simpsons" (4.9 million, 2.6/4)/"The Cleveland Show" (4.1 million, 2.2/3)
NBC: "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" rerun (2.9 million, 2.0/3)

18-49 leader: "The Amazing Race" (2.3)

9 p.m.

CBS: "The Good Wife" (9.1 million, 5.9/9)
ABC: "Revenge" (6.8 million, 4.3/6)
NBC: "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" (4.6 million, 3.0/5)
FOX: "Family Guy" (5.25 million, 2.9/4)/"Bob's Burgers" (3.9 million, 2.1/3)

18-49 leader: "Family Guy" (2.6)

10 p.m.

CBS: "The Mentalist" (9.4 million, 6.0/10)
ABC: "Red Widow" (5.32 million, 3.4/6)
NBC: "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" (5.31 million, 3.5/6)

18-49 leader: "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" (1.8 )

Hopefully will get DVR results from Oscar week, curious about that one.  But if CBS marked it as a Special, I won't get the info.  Only get access to numbers that official get included in the season averages.

For example CBS switched the rerun pattern of Good Wife and Mentalist that night.  That automAtically makes those airings Specials.

Oh on Oscar week we were the ranked 35th, meaning even with reruns before and after and airing against on of the most watched shows of the test (typically the Super Bowl and a couple convergence games are larger) we still did better then more then half of network tv.

Comparing TAR22 to the past seasons, I don't see it doing that well. Even The Mentalist and Mike & Molly (shockingly) at the near-late night show time slot is beating it by more viewers.

13th or 14th place for the week is great! I'm not sure TAR has ever been much higher than this on a consistent basis.

Rachel, the ratings are a scoring system about viewers based upon a national sample of viewers, and is based on statistical sampling to reflect the demographics of the U.S. population. The age brackets are called, appropriately, "demos" (for demographics) and are stratified to reflect the age groups of interest to advertisers to whom the networks sell advertising time.
The samples are described in terms of size and percentage of the total audience (or the particular demographic) in terms of households. In the past decade, the proportion of the national audience watching broadcast networks live have been declining in part due to the availability of cable/satellite channels and the increasing use of DVRs and alternate delivery of programming (such as Netflix, Amazon, I-Tunes, and similar venues).
Thus, the traditional ratings numbers for overnight and weekly viewership is not as helpful on an absolute scale, since the viewing audience for the broadcast nets have been dropping  significantly, especially since the beginning of the Great Recession (in 2007). While it appears people are watching programming even more than ever, they're not returning to the traditional viewing model.

Hope that helps. That's why we're paying attention to TAR's relative placement among programs for the weekly numbers (which are the audience as measured for live viewing or time shifted viewing within the same day) and when available for the audience as augmented for time shifted viewing (with commercials) within seven days.

I can understand why it's confusing. It took me a couple of years to understand it when TAR first premiered. As to the show's placement, in most years, we've been in the Top 30 or top 25, and less frequently in the top 20. The tendency this year (TAR 21-22) to be in the top 15 is an improvement in comparison to the other broadcast networks. Likewise, TAR is usually winning its time slot (except for NFL football in the fall) and that's an improvement as well especially for a show that's been on the air for 12 years now.

DVR results Week #2 (Against the Oscars, so don't panic about the lower then normal ratings).

Live Same Day
6.950 million viewers
Live Plus 7
8.578 million viewers

a gain of 1.628 million, a percentage increase of  23.4%

Live Same Day
1.9 adults 18-49
Live Plus 7
2.5 adults 18-49

A gain of .6, a percentage increase of  31.6%.

Still not much lift (in relationship to most shows (even CBS shows), but in reality it's not that big of deal.

If you have a show that gets 12 million viewers.  You as a network would much, much rather have the majority be from Live Same Day, not only do ad buyers only consider the first 3 days, the percentage of people that watch commercials (what is important) is at only 20 percent of the people who use DVR's.  So basically for each 5 persons gained in adults 18-49, only one really counts.

And TAR actually live (and live Same day) numbers are very strong for CBS, and strong for broadcast tv.  We are averaging 13 - 15th place so far this cycle, and while that's not the best placement we have ever had, its better then our normal average.  For all the declines across the board in broadcast tv, TAR(which has dropped) has dropped a far lesser rates, then almost all programs on CBS (there are 5 shows that have aired in the last 5 years that have held better, out of over a hundred programs put out by CBS in those same 5 years).

Themikko95, both are relative. The weekly ranking has importance because the general decline in broadcast ratings and that is one tool to provide context. The actual number of viewers is relevant in comparison to other shows aired at the same time, or at least on the same night.

I was wondering what makes the number of viewers of US television decrease like that? I still remember back when TAR 19 aired, it often hit 10 million viewers but it barely made to Top 20 ???

The overall viewing audience is shifting to three primary alternate viewing methods: (1) cable and satellite programs not seen on broadcast stations; (2) time shifted viewing off of DVRs that takes place after the night TAR airs -- this has to do with the end of each ratings week being on Sunday and thus missing any time shifted viewing after Sunday night; (3) alternate delivery methods such as I-Tunes, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and others including watching the episodes online at CBS.com.

At least we won the timeslot (pretty much) (is that a big deal?)
Yes, very good it's remaining #1. Bad news is that The Good Wife and The Mentalist are getting more viewers so that's a yellow signal. I watched The Good Wife for once last year, could not stand for another "mystery" episode of that confusing show.

Total viewers are almost entirely meaningless, at least in prime time.

CBS consistently promotes its 25-54 demo, but for the most part its also meaningless.  They do this because its where they get the largest part of their audience.

Between the hours of 8pm and 11pm, ad buyers focus almost exclusively on two primary age demos 18-49, and 18-34.  So many people get pissed that ad buyers basically ignore people under 18 and people over 50 during prime time, but they don't seem to understand the reason.

It's not because people 50 and older don't watch tv.  They actually watch more tv then any other age demo.  Its not that they don't have income.

Its because they can sell ads for 50 plus citizens throughout the rest of the day and the late night.  Older americans (which include the vast number of retired citizens who don't have school, don't have jobs) can watch tv at 5am, 7am, 9am, noon, 2pm, 5pm, 11pm news, late shows, late, late shows.  In fact, they do so in great numbers.

Ad buyers can reach that audience whenever they want to.

But for people 18-49, there is a rather small and narrow window where they watch tv and in large numbers, and that is prime time.  Because they watch so little tv (in relation to the percentage of the total population), ad buyers pay a premium, a huge premium to get them when they watch in large numbers.

They can sell ads for products geared towards the older americans at so many different times of the day, ad buyers can't generate high rates per person of that age.  But since 18-49 watch so little tv and watch in such a small window, ad buyers are willing to pay far, far more to ensure they reach that market.

Every show that has aired on Sunday has always had a larger audience then TAR, often with several million more in total audience, but with only one exception and for only one season no show on CBS Sunday has a larger audience in 18-49 viewers.  That is why TAR is still around, and will continue to stay around.

And while its nice that TAR is winning its time period, that is really not relevant (historically TAR hasn't and again its been the one successful and stable primetime show on CBS Sunday).  TAR isn't in renewal competition with shows from other networks, its in competition from other shows on CBS.  As long as it continues to trounce the adult 18-49 demo of the other shows on CBS Sunday Tar will have a long future.

Sunday Finals

TAR did 8.909 million viewers (ranked 16th for the week)

2.3 in adults 18-49 (Tvbythenumbers is listing TAR as ranked 13th for the week, but it's chart is wrong and they have yet to correct it.  If Tar was 13th then its total adults 18-49 (in actual viewers wouldn't b 2.899 million), as shows ranked 14th (2.900 million), shows #15 (2.929 million) would be lower not higher.

3.2 adults 25-54 (almost meaningless, but still higher then any other CBS show on Sunday)

1.1 adults 18-34 (highest for any CBS show on Sunday)

DVR results week #3
Live Same day
9.243 million viewers
Live Plus 7
10.483

An increase of 1.240 million viewers and a 13.4% increase.

Live Same day
2.5 adults 18-49
Live Plus 7
3.0 adults 18-49

A half point increase, a percentage increase of 20%.

Always nice to see the numbers, but not really that relevant.  It takes 4 DVR viewers to equal one live viewer, thanks to the average DVR viewer skipping commercials.  And ad buyers only care about the people who watch the commercials.  Though TAR is one of the few shows that actually does feature some rather substantial product placement (and that does help some, but no where near the level of a normal commercial).

Sorry about the formatting. It looks great in the editing window. I tried most of the available fonts, but couldn't improve upon it. Overall, I'd say it fits in with the other weeks so far this season, maybe up a bit. The delay for basketball doesn't seem to hurt the ratings, much as football delays didn't hurt ratings. I'm a bit distressed that Family Guy was slightly higher in the 18-49 ratings, but we did have about 75% more overall viewers. maybe it's good TAR isn't on at 9 PM.

Family Guy normally outperforms TAR but since its a half hour show, CBS (or any other network with hourlong programming) will state how their show won the hour. Fox which doesn't always get the best overall adult 18-49 demo, does win the night in adults 18-34 (all of their programs on Sunday score a higher 18-34 then all of the shows on CBS).  As much as Ad buyers love 18-49, they fall over themselves for adults 18-34.  Thats why they have some extremely long lived shows that at least based just on total viewers and 18-49 don't do that great, they make a huge profit thanks to having superior younger demos.  Especially with that age group being the group that is fastest in switching to DVR viewing, or to online streaming (both of which earn per person much smaller amounts of revenue) ad buyers will sometimes spend as much as 4 times the general adult 18-49 rate for an equal number of just 18-34.

With the fact that we nearly broadcast at the 9pm hour, we still held the same demo from last week, that is good.  We ranked 14th in viewers and 17th in the demo.

A very solid performance.

DVR results for week #4
Live Same Day
9.271 million viewers
Live PLus 7
10.514 million viewers  ( a gain of 1.243 million viewers, a percentage gain of 13.4%).  We nearly made top twenty five lists this week (thanks to about a third of shows having reruns).  The 25th show gained 1.255 million viewers.  And on the demo front, we were 29th, though the shows from 17th to 36th all gained .5 (it was results to the second decimal point that separated the group out).

So far this cycle, we are doing solid numbers for CBS in general (live Same Day), very strong for V overall, and nearly the best for all Sunday shows (with typically only the half hour Family guy doing better).

We are doing better then any other Sunday show on CBS in adults 18-34 (no surprise as the other shows tend to have extremely old audiences), adults 18-49 (again also not a surprise), but also adults 25-55 (many seasons we have not had the best performance for CBS on Sunday here).

Though broadcast network audience do still continue to shrink (and at faster rates then any other decade since at least the 70's), TAR has held far better then most shows.

With both Good Wife and Mentalists officially renewed today, (Surprised I am by the Mentalist, as CBS doesn't produce that show), I expect at least one of them to be moved to Friday next year.  I also hope that the Goodwife is pushed to 10pm (on whatever day it does air), its average audience age is one of the oldest on network tv (only Blue Bloods and 60 Minutes is older), and having TAR sandwiched between two shows with extremely old audience does hurt TAR.  Of course it also makes TAR look really good, having such a dramatically different audience between those two programs.

Live Same Day
2.4 adults 18-49
Live Plus 7
2.9 adults 18-49, an increase of a half a demo point, a percentage gain of 20.8%.

Yes, DVR makes up a huge part of the majority of shows audience, even if it brings in considerable less revenue.  Most shows about 35- 45% of its total audience is from DVR viewers, and that includes TAR.

But since DVR results are included in Live Same Day numbers (the ones report by news sites, newspapers, blogs, here), most people don't realize how large it actually is.

CBS Sunday Live Only numbers in adults 18-49 (From the fall)
60 Minutes - 2.2 adults 18-49 (Heavily impacted by NFL overruns)
Amazing Race - 1.9 adults 18-49
The Good Wife - 1.4 adults 18-49
Mentalist - 1.5 adults 18-49

TOTAL DVR AUDIENCE for those shows
60 Minutes - .3 (only 12% of its overall audience, 66% of that DVR audience is from the original air date)
Amazing Race - 1.2 (40% of its total audience is from DVR of which, 58% of that DVR use is from the original date)
Good Wife - .8 (36% of its total audience is from DVR, 38% of that DVR use if from the original air date)
Mentalist - 1.2 (45% of its total audience is from DVR,  25% of that DVR use is from the original air date)

Some very popular shows have even greater percentage of their audience from DVR

Big Bang Theory 52% of their total audience is from DVR use
Grey's Anatomy 54% of their audience is from DVR
The Following 54% from DVR
Once Upon a Time 50%  from DVR
Modern Family 57% from DVR
Glee 53% from DVR
NCIS and Criminal Minds 48% from DVR
Revolution 46% from DVR
Survivor 46% from DVR
Grimm 56% from DVR

I watch the race live on high def channel, while recording it on regular channel. Do I get counted twice? What happens when it is running late it is titled the good wife instead of the race.

couchracer, that totally depends on whether you are getting it over the air, by cable provider, or by satellite.

From what I've understood the cable and satellite providers have the ability to track viewing live, on their provided DVR, or repeated time shifted viewing. I don't know if that is used for Nielsen, but since that would be a simple matter of software tracking, it should be possible.

As to delays, Nielsen does have the ability to adjust the show's audience numbers for delays due to live programming overruns, but not for the preliminary overnight figures that come from the 50 largest television markets. They clearly are doing it for live plus three day or live plus seven day, since they have to know when their viewer sample watches shows that were recorded for later viewing.

Actually Overnight ratings now do include time shifted data ( I still hate them, since they only track large cities, and many shows perform in rural america completely different then cities).

Couchracer, you only get counted if you are one of the Nielsen's sample homes.  If you are a home in that sample, then any multiple viewing are now counted.  That's a fairly new change to their system, as previously you could watch a program 5 times that night, but only get credit for watching it once.

I always thought that was stupid as the whole point of the tracking system is to track how many people are watching the commercials, and if you do watch those commercials multiple times they should be more effective.  Now the networks are provided a breakdown of their totals, so they know for example how many of their total for the night is from multiple viewings from the same person (some if its multiple times through the week), they know if a household is a casual viewer (doesn't watch it often) or if a household watching it every single week.

Now for the bulk of us, who aren't part of the sample, some services, like Video on Demand, Tivo, a few cable groups, and satellite providers do get household data.  By that I mean they know if someone has that program on.  They don't typically get income or age breakdown or how many people are watching each show in that household.  Those numbers, are not included in addition to the sample done by Nielsen.

The Sample by Nielsen, if done properly, should have a sample that basically takes that into account.  Nielsen's sample is one of the larger done in the US.  For example when they do polling for political or news purposes (from all things like Elections to tracking the opinion over issues for the US) typically Gallop and other groups use a sample of a between a 1 - 5 thousand.  And they have a history of being typically within 3% of the actual legitimate number.  The sample by Nielsen is thirty thousand homes (so probably a lot closer to 70 thousand).

Right now for TV purposes the one arena that Nielsen does't currently track well is online streaming, which is still fairly new, but its growing and growing quickly, especially among the young.  But the actual official sites (like Netflix, or Hulu, or say CBS' site) does track the number of streams active.  They just can't tell if you are actually watching the show, the age and income of the people watching the show, if you are watching commercials, and how many people are currently watching from that one stream.  Until they set that up, those numbers will not be included with nightly numbers (they also must play the same exact commercial breaks to be included, and most online streams don't feature full commercial loads).  But so far, the networks are not willing to cough up the money to track that (yet).  Eventually, enough people will switch over to that style of viewing that will force the networks to put the same number of commercials on, and to set up the at home devices to track the breakdown of the audience (seriously each person, including any guest have to click a device every two minutes to verify you are watching a program, it sounds rather annoying).

Some people want or wish that Nielsen just tracked each device.  That will, and I repeat, will never happen.  Most people will not allow outside agencies to monitor everything they watch.  As it is, Nielsen with just 30,000 homes gets turned down a lot by people who don't want that invasion of privacy.

Mine is a cable provided DVR. We live in rural America. Sometimes (like last week) the Dvr shows Good Wife as the label, but when I watch it, the label at the bottom says Amazing Race. We are not currently a Nielsen family, they only seem to want my youngest daughter and she is not interested. Thanks for the info.

Here's CBS' take on the weekly ratings for TAR 22, Episode 7. CBS is treating it as a "special" which IIRC means it won't be used for the averages at the end of the season.

Re: TAR 22 Ratings Thread
« Reply #61 on: April 21, 2013, 03:43:44 AM »
Here's the final ratings from Sunday April 14th according to zap2it.com. Since I also found the top 25 rankings for 18-49 viewership and total viewership for the week, I'll post those too. The 18-49 numbers were the same as the March 31st episode but the total number of viewers was up 340,000 people. TAR was 18th for the week in 18-49 viewers and 19th in overall viewers. For what it's worth, TAR beat Survivor in total viewers but Survivor was several places ahead of TAR among 18-49 viewership.

I feel dumb because I called up the weekly numbers for the week including April 7th and TAR wasn't in the Top 25.  I was a bit shocked and it took me a couple of minutes to remember that TAR hadn't aired because of the Country Music Awards show.  :groan:

Preliminary numbers:
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/05/06/tv-ratings-sunday-once-upon-a-time-revenge-and-the-mentalist-up-as-the-amazing-race-finale-dips/181107/

CBS    The Amazing Race (8-10PM)    2.3 [18-49 Rating]   6 [18-49 Share] 8.95 [Viewers Live+SD (million)]

Unless it gets adjusted up by 0.3, this might go down as the lowest-rated finale ever.

Does this season have the lowest 18-49 rating in franchise history?  TAR22 seemed to max out with an ~2.5 18-49 Rating.

Slayton, thanks for reminding me about the ratings. I've been meaning to catch up and hadn't done it. Good thing I checked now, because the April 21st ratings were at the bottom of the archive at zap2it.com and probably would have been dropped later today.

TAR did well this week, finishing 10th in the 18-49 ratings and 14th in overall total viewers.

For the April 28th show (Edinburgh), TAR slipped a little bit in the ratings and finished 14th among 18-49 viewers and 18th in total viewership. Their actual numbers were down slightly in 18-49 and up in total viewers, but other shows improved more, so TAR shifted down a few notches.

Re: TAR 22 Ratings Thread
« Reply #65 on: May 08, 2013, 03:24:10 AM »
As Slayton as already pointed out, the ratings for the finale weren't all that we could have hoped for. TAR finished 18th among 18-49 viewers and 21st among total overall viewership. I'm a little surprised at this given the way the rest of the season went. I saw something on Monday morning that said TAR was hurt by the NASCAR race running long on FOX, but I haven't seen it mentioned since then. Since we are frequently helped in the fall by NFL games running long, I guess it makes sense that an overrun on another network might hurt TAR. While this may have been one of our weakest showings this season, it would have been about average for the fall as I remember it. Overall TAR has had a good season in my opinion. Slayton, you're right, the raw viewership numbers are down this season compared to past seasons, but that has been true across the board for just about all shows. TAR has actually improved in the ratings over past seasons because other shows have declined more than TAR and TAR has moved up. I don't think TAR is in any danger of being cancelled, but if the network wide viewership decrease continues, I imagine CBS will eventually have to cut what it pays World Race Productions to make TAR. Maybe WRP will find other sources of revenue to maintain the budget, maybe they will be forced to cut costs. Time will tell.

Your concerns have been addressed a couple of times in this thread earlier this season by people who know more about it than me. You might want to scroll back to the beginning and read it for reassurance.

Here's the ratings for the finale:

Since peaking around TAR 15, ratings have tended to decline by a predictable amount each year.

TAR 16 averaged 2.8-3.2
TAR 18 averaged 2.5-2.8
TAR 20 averaged 2.5-2.8 (interestingly there was no decline)
TAR 22 averaged 2.3-2.5 (remarkably stable this year)

Given the weaker-rated shows on CBS Sundays, the show is safe until it dips below a 2.0, which won't be for at least three cycles.

RFF TAR 4: 129 EUR

Ratings Review: THE AMAZING RACE (Spring 2013)

THE AMAZING RACE has become the foundation of the CBS sunday line up. It gets about as many total viewers as the dramas THE GOOD WIFE and THE MENTALIST  but always performs well in the A18-49 ratings, as the networks top performer in the category.

The numbers did drop, slightly, for THE AMAZING RACE. From the fall season, it was down a couple tenths of a ratings point in Adults 18-49. viewership was mostly flat, down less than a a couple hundred thousand viewers.

What the series really needs a strong companion series. A show that compliments its demographics. If CBS could program a two hour block of shows that attract the same type of viewers, TAR could see a resurgence in the ratings, even against football in the fall.
