Name: Matthew Davis
Age: 25

Describe what you do: I am a Lieutenant at the fire department. I am in charge of a four main engine company and fight fire, respond to wrecks and medical emergencies.
3 words to describe you:  Witty, funny and outgoing.

What famous person reminds you of your teammate? Larry the Cable Guy
What scares you most about traveling? The unknown! We are not very “cultured” people so we don’t know much about how other countries operate.
What excites you most about traveling? Getting to see new places, cultures and do different things that I would never get to do in my life.
Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on The Race together: We are both very hard-headed and Daniel does not have much common sense, so we argue a good bit but always remain friends.
Pet peeve about your teammate: He picks his nose in public a lot (seriously) and he never wears a belt (back out, crack out).
What country and place would you most like to visit and why? Australia seems very nice with cool animals.
What do you hope to accomplish by running The Race (other than winning one million bucks)? I obviously hope to win the million dollars. It could make a huge difference in our lives.

These guys seem like they could be a very good M/M team! It looks like there's a little bit of an "it" factor they're missing. But I might be wrong.

These guys seem R-E-A-L-L-Y B-O-R-I-N-G.

Because CBS did an EPIC job at casting this season, these guys are my least liked of the season, because they are boring.

They look like a socially awkward, Avi and Joe and John and Scott type of teams who will usually go first. But then I thought about that for Art and JJ and then they were there to piss my TV time for the entire season.

But I know they won't be Art and JJ... and they won't be remembered after the season too. It's just vibes from me. :(

The Waldo's of the first episode.

I don't know if it's that TAR is starting to cast REALLY boring teams (and somehow they usually get last) or they just stopped digging through the first eliminated team's story and purposely editing them to make them unimportant. Kinda like Rob & Sheila.

Speaking of Rob & Sheila.. even they were more memorable than these guys

I agree. We didn't get to know them very well. But I think the editors were trying to do that to throw us off so we would think that next episode we would get to know them better. It almost worked on me - for the first half of the episode I thought Idries & Jamil were doomed.

In the past it has seemed like we get a lot of footage of the first eliminated team, enough to make us suspect that we won't be getting any more for the rest of the season.

'The Amazing Race': Season 22's First Eliminated Team on Their 'Heartbreaking' End
11:25 AM PST 2/18/2013 by Kimberly Nordyke

Firefighters Matthew Davis and Daniel Moss tell THR what they wish they'd done differently and what they struggled with the most -- apart from the canoe.

Matthew Davis, 25, and Daniel Moss, 24, made a pact with two other teams to take a penalty at the sand castles, thinking they could beat the others in the rowing part of the leg. But their canoe kept tipping over, and they were eliminated after coming in last on Sunday night's season premiere.

On Monday, the firefighters and best friends from Gaffney, S.C., talked to The Hollywood Reporter about being the first team out and what they would do differently.

The Hollywood Reporter: I'm sure it's hard being the first person out. Was it hard to watch it last night?

Matt: It was just as heartbreaking last night as it was when it came out of Phil [Keoghan]'s mouth.

THR: What would you do differently if you could go back and do it again?

Daniel: I don't know that we would do anything differently. The major thing I would have done is I would have jumped out of the helicopter, and Matt would have done the sand castles. Because when I started [with the sand castles], I had absolutely no plan, no theory. I was just breaking and building. Once we were eliminated, we started talking about it, and Matt said he had a theory about working in a grid section. With Matt being the brains of the team, if I had jumped out of the helicopter and he had done the sand castles, maybe it would have been different. But taking the penalty and quitting [the sand castle challenge], all that I would do again.

THR: You weren't the only team struggling with the boat, which kept tipping over. Was it as hard as it looked?

Daniel: The canoe, it was tough. After just being out there so long in the sun, it almost felt like a mirage or going into the desert. But at that point, we were tired. Normally we canoe a lot, and we were going up against skinny little girls half our size, and I think weight had a little do to with it. One little lean to the right, and you were out of it. If you look closely, there was another guy on the back with us, so there were three grown men in that canoe.

THR: Aside from the boat, what was the most challenging part of the race for you?

Matt: The most challenging thing for us was getting to the airport in Los Angeles. We thought we'd take the freeway like everybody else did, and where we got on the freeway, it was just slam-packed with traffic, so we were the last team to get to the airport.

THR: After you were eliminated, was there a particular team you were rooting for?

Matt: The firefighters -- we're hoping the CBS editing can still make us win. [laughs]

THR: Would you compete again if asked?

Daniel: Absolutely we would.

Matt: We still think about it as the chance to do something we never get to do. We work 100-hour weeks here. We never have the time or money to see places like Bora Bora. The chance to do that and do the things we did and meet people we never would have met made it all worth it. I thought we were a little more prepared. But if we [went back on the race] and had to do the sand castles again, we'd just quit before we even got started. [laughs]

THR: At the end of last night's episode, you said you were probably going to get some grief from your fellow firefighters for the way it went down. Have you heard from them yet?

Daniel: We haven't gotten back to work yet [since the episode aired], but several guys from the fire station watched with us, and when they aired the last quote of the show, they laughed and said, "You better get ready."

If I were them, I would have just gone back to the Roadblock and started over once the other two teams "checked in" (it wasn't really checking in after all, because they had a penalty to wait out). That would have given them four hours to complete the task before being eliminated for sure.

They had to quit to get their next clue which will direct them to the pitstop. They can't go back and do it.

They sealed their own fate by quitting, nobody told them to.

So, they were the first team to quit and get eliminated on the first leg of the race. Seems like the most legitimate elimination we have had in a long long time. :lol3:

And can I just say that if I were there, I'll dig till the very end for sure? I'm not gonna put my fate in the race on floats and a boat, I'll dig my fate with my own hands. At least if I couldn't find it, I know I gave my best.

Now they are just gonna dwell on the fact that they had a chance but blew it completely.

Amazing Race's Matt and Daniel: Quitting Was Our Best Option
by Joyce Eng

The Amazing Race mantra is often "never give up," but three teams didn't get the memo on the Season 22 premiere. After hours of searching through 400 sandcastles for a clue to no avail, newlyweds Max and Katie, country singers Caroline and Jennifer, and firefighters Matt and Daniel agreed to quit the Roadblock and take a four-hour penalty so they could move on to the next task and start on even ground to stay in the Race. Unfortunately for the firefighters, it was a bad call, as the next task was to row to the Pit Stop in a tiny Bora Bora canoe called a va'a that could not handle their weight. "The other teams probably didn't weight 100 pounds with both of them in it," Daniel tells TVGuide.com. "It was 600 pounds between me and Matt and a French guy [in the boat with us]." Still, the two insist that they don't regret throwing in the towel.

Is the firehouse giving you a hard time?
Daniel: Those guys would've given us a hard time if we had finished second. They would've given us a hard time about what we spent the $1 million on if we won. [Laughs] We could never win with them.
Matt: They're a tough crowd to please.

How far behind were you?
Daniel: We weren't that far behind at all. The way they showed it, when they split the screen, we could still see them in front of us and we kept getting closer, but when we fell over that second time, we knew it was over then.
Matt: The first time, we were in the lead. Before we could get back in our canoe, the guy in the back with us had a little soup can with him and we was scooping water out so we could get back in, so we were trying to help him. That's when Max and Katie passed us. Then we got back in and paddled and we flipped again, and both were way out our reach.

Do you regret quitting? You seemed really confident you could beat them canoeing because of your strength, which turned out to be your downfall.
Daniel: No. Once you got done with the sandcastles, the next challenge was 50 yards down the beach and we could see it was canoeing. At the time, we were convinced that A) we could build this canoe faster than they can and B) we could row this thing to Phil and be sitting in ninth place. We would've made this decision 100 times over again. All of our friends and family were like, "Yeah, that was a great decision."
Matt: I was watching Daniel from the sideline. There were 400 sandcastles and only three of them had clues left. He was taking five minutes to build a sandcastle, so in my head, I was like, "He's going to build 12 sandcastles in an hour and he's going to have 400 eventually." There was just no way. They asked us once and we shrugged it off and said let's keep digging. Then they came back, Daniel said, "We can canoe." It was pretty funny watching it on TV. We're pretty good canoers. We've been on plenty of canoe trips. We're confident swimming and canoeing, so we got beat at our own game.

How long were you at the sandcastles before you decided to quit?
Daniel: I'm thinking we were there six hours, counting the canoe. We kind of lost track of time, but you could tell by looking at the sun. When the first few teams jumped out of the plane, that was, like, 9 a.m. and by the time we were eliminated, the sun was setting.

Did you really think you couldn't find the clue in four hours? Were you digging deep enough? It seemed like the clues were underneath the sandcastles, not in them.
Daniel: I wasn't digging deep enough to find the clue. That's the thing. I didn't read my clue, so I would've never found it. That's my fault. So quitting for us, even watching it on TV, moving on to the next challenge was our best option.

Once you take a penalty, are you not allowed to go back on it? Like after you tipped over, could you have gone back to the sandcastles?
Daniel: I don't think so and that wasn't our plan. ... None of the three of us were willing to take the penalty and leave without the other teams. One of the three could've knocked over the sandcastle and found the clue and left us, so we agreed we all had to quit. I also don't think any of us wanted to go back to the sandcastles. [Laughs]

Some fans are annoyed that you guys quit. What do you have to say to them?
Daniel: When we started this whole process, that was the one thing we said we'd never do. We didn't want to quit and be that team. After doing it and after being part of it, I think quitting was the best option for us.
Matt: I think each of the three teams had more than likely knocked over a sandcastle that had a clue under it, but they weren't digging deep enough to find the clue, so they were just building sandcastles on top of the clues and they were marking them off to say they already checked that one. Once they realized that every single one had been checked and they were going to have to check them all again because they weren't digging deep enough, we all realized that it was going to be, like, 10 more hours. We had a three-in-400 chance to stay if we kept searching. By quitting, we had a one-in-three chance.

What are you guys up to now?
Matt: Back in the firehouse and now we're just going to watch this season and cheer everyone on.

No more canoeing?
Daniel: We'll still go canoeing, but no more sandcastles!

Thanks to Peach's approval, expect some videos coming your way showcasing clips from each team themselves episode-by-episode.

I chose to do Matt & Daniel first since they only lasted one episode and didn't have much airtime  :(
