'Survivor' wants Register on island

  Survivor among us?
Has a friend or neighbor mysteriously disappeared? Maybe they are competing on "Survivor" for $1 million. The show's producers have requested a copy of The Des Moines Register to be used in a reward challenge. The Register welcomes your speculation. Send your ideas to staff writer Erin Crawford.

In the shadow of a volcano on a Pacific island, a Register reader is apparently vying for $1 million.

The Des Moines Register on Friday approved a request from an agency representing CBS and the producers of "Survivor" to use a copy of the paper as a prop on the hit reality TV show.

"Our producers have specifically requested" the Register, the agency said in a letter.

"Who knows?" said Chris Ender of CBS. "You could have someone from Des Moines or a connection to Des Moines." The show will announce the hometowns of its 16 contestants in mid-August. "Survivor 9: Vanuatu, Islands of Fire" debuts in September.

"Survivor" contestants first compete as teams, then eventually as individuals, to stay on the island the longest and win $1 million.

Contestants are typically signed to contracts that enforce secrecy about the show and its outcome. For now, all that's known about the 16 people are a few hints from host Jeff Probst, who told USA Today the cast had "a colorful guy who would call himself a redneck, super-cute girls who appear to be fighters, a bunch of cocky guys."

Tryouts included a stop at Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Altoona on Jan. 10-11.

Promotional shots show the contestants' legs and feet. Could they be the legs of an Iowan? You can find those photos at www.survivorfever.net. Click the Vanuatu link, then scroll down to "Promo Video Captures
