TAR 20 Ratings Thread

This is from TVLine.com on the overnights for TAR 20's premiere outing

Quote
Apologies for the generic-y headline, but it’s kind of a mixed and uncertain bag with this Sunday’s ratings, due to golf overrun on CBS and conflicting benchmarks. But here goes!

As officially approximated by CBS, The Amazing Race 20 came out of the starting gate with 9.9 million total viewers and a 2.6 demo rating. Versus a year ago, the competition series was up a few percentage points, yet down from its fall opener.

Not only was there the overrun, but the data is a bit slow because it's a federal holiday in the U.S. today so a lot of places are observing a three day weekend.

The Digital Spy website are giving us different overnight numbers than TVLine:

Quote
The Amazing Race's premiere episode was 4% up from last year with 10.85 million viewers and a 2.6 adults 18-49 demo rating at 8pm. The Good Wife attracted 9.47m (2.2) at 9pm, while CSI: Miami took in 9.98m (2.1) at 10pm. However, due to golf overrunning by 20 minutes earlier in the evening, CBS's figures may be slightly altered at a later date.

It will be interesting to see what the weeklys tell us tomorrow.

It's a disappointment that ratings of TAR premiere failed to compete with those of Survivor premiere.

This season TAR has aroused my interest. As for Survivor, I might give it up because the premiere was kinda boring. :groan:

I've gone through each of the sites that are normally used to get the information (including CBS) and so far no one has posted the final weekly ratings numbers for the week through Sunday night. Will keep checking, but at the moment, I have no idea when those numbers will be available.

Some additional points

Best numbers for a spring opener going back to season 9 in viewers.
Tying season 16 for adult 18-49, we have to go back to season 11-All Stars for a sping opening scoring higher demos.

One of the very, very few overruns that the sporting event does worse then the regular prime time viewers, in other words we didn't get a ratings bump due to sorts.

The final 20 minutes of the show had the following ratings
11.019 million viewers
2.9 adults 18-49
3.9 adults 25-54

For the full night we were had the 2nd largest audience (60 minutes did better) and the 2nd highest adult 18-49 demo (Once Upon a Time was first), and we tied Once Upon a Time for 1st in adults 25-54.

Our actual live only adult 18-49 was 2.06, .74 was from same day DVR viewing roughly 26.4% of the love same day final numbers.

FWIW, I read one discussion at one of the site that does post ratings info that all the broadcast nets have been seeing declining Sunday audience numbers for three years now; and the speculation is that there is a lot more alternate viewing taking place than is being caught by Nielsen.  (Entirely possible with CBS posting episodes online at its site, and the availability of ITunes for episode downloads and streaming.)
The important thing seems to be looking at the numbers relative to other shows that night; since it is the last night of the viewing week, it is much harder to get a reading on viewership by time shifting after Sunday night until the plus seven numbers become available, and as you'll remember, CBS doesn't always provide those numbers in press releases we can see.

I was told that there were only 25,000 households in Nielsen's nationalwide survey in the year 2009 (not sure the number nowadays). How could those few people represent the viewers nationalwide? I sort of feel those so-called ratings are spoof or scam or whatsoever.

I mentioned it over on the Anything and Everything board, but I'll mention it over here since I suspect not everyone looks at that board and it seems to fit in here. I don't know how many households Nielsen surveys each week for their ratings, but this week, my household is one of them.  :conf: I would have thought it would be more than 25,000 households nationally since this is the second time I've received a ratings diary (the first time was as a teenager back in the 1970s). I'd figured that after the first time, it probably wouldn't ever happen again. A little simple math shows that 25,000 households times 52 weeks a year over 40 years comes out to about 52 million households. I guess it wasn't as unlikely as I thought, but it's still probably 5 or 10 to 1 against it happening (as a rough guess). Maybe it was fewer households in the past. As for the accuracy of using 25,000 as a sample size, I'll point out that political polling uses far less, though they always say it's plus or minus 3 or 4 percent. I suspect the networks want better accuracy than that, thus a larger poll of 25,000 homes. It's a fairly costly process. Neilsen is paying us 5 dollars to fill out the survey, so that is $125,000 each week just for paying people to fill out surveys, let alone postage and reading and tallying the diaries. It probably costs at least $500,000 a week to conduct the weekly Nielsen ratings. That's not even factoring in the electronic boxes they use for the overnight ratings, so the cost is probably a lot higher than that. Anyway, we'll be helping TAR out against the Oscars this week, even though we won't be in the overnight ratings, just in the final ratings that comes out weeks after the fact.

Getting back to SuperTux's question, I couldn't explain it now, but the statistics courses I took in college showed me that you could get a good poll from a relatively small group of people if they were representative of the population as a whole. A lot of personal data about each of us has been collected through various means and I believe it's very possible to get a reasonably accurate and representative group of households each week. The other issue is whether people are going to be honest about what they watch. I suspect they aren't completely honest. I know the first time I filled a diary out, all my favorite shows got written in whether I actually watched them or not. This time I'm being honest since we don't watch all that much TV and I don't have nearly as many favorite shows as I did back then. Let's ignore whether or not we will really have 500 or so people in our living room when TAR or Survivor is on.  I expect the fraudulent entries probably tend to cancel out when thousands of people are involved and the networks are happy to have anything that appears to raise the overall viewer numbers.

Thanks for your explanation, Plaidmoon! Glad to hear your household has been chosen. I thought Nielson abandoned the use of ratings diary...

I know there are about 4,000 households in ratings survey in Japan, and 5,000 in Mainland China. Ratings information is always a controversial issue in China because of the small amount surveyed and of some exposes of "fake ratings" which have been brought to light. For example, one expose is that an anonymous TV station, in order to raise up the ratings of a TV drama, made phone calls to some households in the ratings survey, asked them to watch this drama in that timeslot and said "If you do so, we'll send you some gifts one month later." One month later the households that followed the instruction received the gift (sea cucumbers? I can't remember). It was obvious bribery.  :groan: But as for this TV station, it didn't have to pay much because the number of the polled was small, therefore even bribing few households would lift up ratings quite large. So some media editors in China shouted out "Ratings are the villain of the piece." (:;)

I think I need to point out that Nielsen uses different techniques to create sample audiences for its information.
The typical ratings information used for broadcast and cable television programs are machine based; and the information is collected and sent electronically to Nielsen. I believe households are chosen for a year at a time but it is not something that changes by the week or the month.
The diary method is used for "sweeps" periods to help validate the electronic data that uses different households, and is used for both television and radio. I don't doubt anything elase that Plaidmoon has said (I've even done the diary a couple of times way back when), but even being picked for either of them is very, very rare because the sample numbers as a proportion of the whole number of U.S. households is so small.

That said:

This week's numbers are so low, that CBS did not release a press release for either the overnights or the weekly finals (or at least as of yet.) TV By The Numbers, however, reports the follow as final numbers for episode 2:
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/02/28/sunday-final-ratings-amazing-race-adjusted-up-academy-awards-final-ratings/122223/
Quote
8:00PM    ABC    Oscar's Red Carpet Live    6.2    16    24.070
   CBS    The Amazing Race    2.2    5    7.710
   FOX    The Simpsons -R    1.6    4    3.830
   NBC    The Celebrity Apprentice -R    0.8    2    2.530
The 2.2/5 is the 18-49 rating/share, and the 7.710 is the total audience in 000s. And of course these numbers are only for the live plus same day audience, and does not include any time shifted viewing after Sunday night. (Which is more likely this week since the Oscars do run past prime-time.)

Yes, the Oscars with an audience of 39.5 million killed everyone. And the NBA All-Star Game on TNT did as well. Not a good night for the competition.

Actually I didn't see any doubt that The Artist would win... It's the very movie Oscar would be in favor of.

Last Sunday most TV stations aired reruns except TAR on CBS, which was the only show that successfully made itself over 2.0 in 18~49 demo.

With the exception of the Oscars, The Amazing Race did do the best of the night, didn't it?
Has the show ever appeared at the same night as the Oscars before? If so, then how did the latest episode compare to that one?

Yes TAR has always had to face the oscars during the spring, and yes its always the lowest episode of the year for TAR.  Its also typically the largest audience we ever get from DVR's so it does balance it out.

Also this episode is considered a special.  Meaning its not counting by anyone (network, ad buyers, Nielsen, ect) as part of the season.  It will have no impact on the season ratings or on ad rates.  Everyone knows that its going to take a huge hit.  Its expected.

But here is the plus, we did better in both demo and viewers then last year versus the oscars.  The first episode is the third strongest spring opener in 20 years.

In reality we are doing better then what we should be doing based on previous years trends.

eta; I was typing this post as mswood posted; but nothing she said affects what I'm saying or vice versa.

Without looking at the numbers offhand, I would say, yes, this has been a problem every year with the Oscars since TAR moved to Sundays five years (?) ago, IIRC.

It's one of the things that causes Sunday ratings to be lower; in fact NBC aired a repeat of last Sunday's Celebrity Apprentice premiere, as a for instance. And FOX has had problems on Sundays for a while now, but they run their animated series on Sunday nights and those don't have to be new episodes, so they probably still made money on Sunday night.

This year, it's a little different information wise because there are enough places to look which maintain the ratings information (unlike The Futon Critic's Nielsen imposed policy of not retaining such information after a week.)

Next week's hurdle will be that it is the NCAA basketball Tourney "Selection Sunday" which now takes place during Prime Time, and that tourney begins on Wednesday. I haven't looked at this year's TV schedule, but the NCAA now had different channels airing different regional games simultaneously, so it will depend on which games CBS get to air as to any possible runover a week from this coming Sunday.

From Deadline.com:

Also rebounding big from last week was CBS’ The Amazing Race (2.8/7, up 27%) at 8 PM.
So far, haven't found anyone mentioning total audience that can be quoted. But the demo was either 1st or 2nd for the night among all broadcast networks.

From CBS PressExpress site, the preliminary Sunday night numbers. Keep in mind that every year when the U.S. starts daylight savings time, the audience numbers go down because in relative terms, sunlight is available an hour later. Final weekly numbers to be out tomorrow, and who knows if we'll hear anything about the "week-plus time shifting" numbers.

One way to see how TAR is doing is that it is still making the top 20, and not lower than the top 30 even in the spring, most of the time.

Does anyone know why CBS is able to claim that TAR was "first in adults 18-49" with a 2.9, despite the fact that "The Walking Dead" had a 3.6 in Adults 18-49?

Do cable shows not count?

The broadcast networks only discuss how they're doing in comparison to other broadcast networks because ad buyers look at broadcast networks and local stations that way.

Cable has a different financial structure, and they are driven by the number of subscribers that could watch a given cable channel (not all cable subscribers have access to all cable channels that are available, either because they did not order that tier of channels or because the cable/satellite provider doesn't carry a particular channel. The ratings then are in terms of how many watched out of how many who has access and could have watched. It's a much more complicated set of numbers, and for some channels, having one million viewers with their channel fees and advertising generates a good profit for the cable provider and the cable channel providing that program.

This is how Daniel Feinberg at Hitfix described the preliminary overnight ratings with the 43 minute NCAA overrun pushing the CBS schedule back (CBS average just under 10 million for that 7pm ET hour):

Quote
8 p.m. -  CBS stayed in first overall with the 10.58 million viewers for "The Amazing Race" (and a big chunk of "60 Minutes" for much of the country), but slipped to second with a 2.6 rating among adults 18-49. ABC's "Once Upon a Time" slipped to 8.585, but actually ticked up from last week in the key demo with a 2.9 rating. NBC's "Harry's Law" averaged 7.62 million viewers for third, but finished fourth with a 1.1 key demo rating. FOX was fourth overall and third in the key demo with "The Simpsons" (5.235 million and a 2.4 key demo rating) and "Bob's Burgers" (4.39 million and a 2.1 key demo).

9 p.m. - "The Good Wife" (and "The Amazing Race" for much of the country) averaged 9.2 million viewers to win the 9 p.m. hour, coming in third with a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49. ABC's "Desperate Housewives" averaged 8.99 million viewers for second and tied for first on the hour with a 2.5 key demo rating. NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice" averaged 5.21 million viewers and a 1.6 key demo rating. FOX was tied for first in the demo and finished fourth overall with "Family Guy" (5.68 million viewers and a 2.8 key demo) and "American Dad" (4.64 million viewers and a 2.2 key demo).

Hopefully the final weekly number tomorrow will get it sorted out, but it looks to me like TAR will be on par with last week, including besting their time slot(s) in the demos, barely.

The best news for TAR is that "The Walking Dead" just finished their season.

According to the guy at tvbythenumbers, TWD's "4.7 adults 18-49 rating crushes everything on broadcast, too."

CBS WINS SUNDAY IN VIEWERS AND KEY DEMOGRAPHICS FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK

CBS placed first on Sunday in viewers and key demographics for the second consecutive week, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for March 25.

Editor’s note: Due to late-running basketball (approximately 19 minutes), CBS ratings are tentative and subject to change.

From 7:30-8:30 PM, 60 MINUTES was first in households (6.9/12), viewers (10.92m), adults 25-54 (3.4/09) and adults 18-49 (2.5/08).  Note: This includes 11 minutes of THE AMAZING RACE 20 and does not include the first 11 minutes of 60 MINUTES.

From 8:30-9:30 PM, THE AMAZING RACE 20 was first in households (5.8/09), viewers (9.29m), second in adults 25-54 (3.3/08) and adults 18-49 (2.3/06).  Note: This includes 11 minutes of THE GOOD WIFE and does not include the first 11 minutes of THE AMAZING RACE 20.

Updated Sunday ratings will be available tomorrow.

However, Digital Spy suggests that the 18 minute offset on both sides of the hour may have brought TAR's overnight numbers lower than the press release suggests:

The Good Wife and The Amazing Race helped CBS just edge out ABC in the ratings on Sunday night.

The Amazing Race took in around 9.85 million viewers and an adults 18-49 demo rating of 2.6 at 8pm, while The Good Wife claimed 9.31m (1.9) at 9pm. CSI: Miami attracted around 9.46m (2.0) at 10pm. However, due to the NCAA basketball game overrunning earlier in the evening, CBS's numbers may be slightly adjusted at a later date.

ABC's Once Upon a Time dropped to a series low of 8.67m (2.8  ) at 8pm, with Desperate Housewives levelling at 9pm with 8.71m (2.6). GCB climbed from last week to 6.48m (2.2) at 10pm.

NBC's Harry's Law continued its week-on-week drop to a new series low of 8.02m (0.8  ) at 8pm. Celebrity Apprentice matched its season low of 5.99m (1.8  ) at 9pm.

Fox's The Cleveland Show levelled from last week with 3.14m (1.5) at 7.30pm, with Bob's Burgers dropping to 3.95m (2.0) at 8.30pm. American Dad also slid to 4.27m (2.0) at 9.30pm.

If Digital Spy is correct, then TAR was second for the night to 60 Minutes, and easily won the time slot.
We'll see what CBS says tomorrow when the final Sunday numbers should be available

Here's the official CBS press release for the final weekly ratings; it made little sense to post preliminary numbers with the nearly one hour overrun for the east coast feed. The schedule were all labeled as "specials" so they won't count in season averages.

Ep10 received a disastrous rating. 2.2/6, 8.42, #3 in the 8pm timeslot, following OUAT(2.9/8, 9.07) and The Simpsons(2.3/7, 5.00).

No show on Sunday got the viewership more than 10 million. Summer comes much earlier this year

Technically TAR would be #2 in the timeslot still when averaging The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers's numbers for the whole hour.

Those are preliminary overnight numbers, folks. Which is why I usually don't post them, unless CBS decides not to post a press release for the final weekly numbers or leaves TAR out completely.

We'll know later today.

This may be a stupid question, but I hope TAR's decreasing ratings isn't a sign of... oh, I can't say it. You know what I mean

It's still ranks #1 or 2 in its timeslot, meaning it's still a hit, but the ratings compared to earlier seasons are weaker.

Almost every show is suffering from decreasing ratings. Comparatively speaking TAR's ratings decrease is not large... Look at American Idol and Survivor.

Something to keep  in mind:

Over the years, school calendars and college academic calendars have gradually crept earlier and earlier. While some states still require public school calendars not to start classes before US Labor Day (the first Monday in September), many others have moved the start date into August, and some into mid-August. Same thing for colleges and universities. The primary reason for all of this is to allow exams to take place before Christmas and to use the winter break to mark a break in academic semesters, so the so-called spring semester starts right after New Years. The results is that the school year end by the end of April beginning of May andthus causes graduations, and school year-end finals and activities to also fall in late April - early May; and it also means some families take vacations right after in May or June.

It isn't a direct correspondence to daylight savings, but by the first week in May sunset in many places appears to be well after 8:00 pm. Thus, time shifted viewing to a different night or week, is becoming a bigger and bigger factor in viewership during this period. Except as a relative (and not absolute measurement), ratings are losing some of their value in measuring audiences. It's been a long developing trend, but I'm realizing how many different factors are now contributing to it.

Meanwhile, here is official CBS press release of the weekly ratings ending 4/29:
