We should find out which flight the tweeter came on.

The odd thing is that it looks like he tweeted that at about 23.00-0.00 Amsterdam time.  :duno:

Don't think we can assume that flight...remember they have to get from Malawi to NBO first. Let's take this to spec now please?

Everyone please keep up the good work on following FB, Tweets, blogs, photo sites! ALL eyes are impt right now!

If our calculations are right, and a leg was run 7/3 to 7/4, it is very possible that we only have 2 legs remaining before the finale!!!!

So sightings are more impt than ever!

A F.Y.I. for those contributors who have been using Google's realtime feature to track tweets or face book posts:

Hi guys, I found a tumblr post with a possible sighting..

Quote
It was a great journey and a great experience. Now, back to ordinary life and tumblr musings… sigh.
Amazing race contestants were on the flight though (that show is still on? ikr!).

Read the other blog posts, it seems like the poster was on a flight from Africa to Milan. I have no idea how to contact the poster; could someone with a tumblr follow up on this or something?  :duno:

Good work! That's a very interesting find! I've tried to find that tumblr post but can't do it. Can you tell when the flight was and where in Africa it departed from? It sounds like a likely destination or transit point to other parts of Europe.

I can't help you with tumblr. I just signed up to see what I could figure out, but I can't make much sense out of it except that it really wants me to create my own blog.  :groan:

Milan ties in well with the other Teams connecting through AMS.  Those teams probably landed at 5:40 am on July 3rd.

After that they would continue on KLM KL 1619 taking off at 7:55 am and landing at Milan LIN at 9:40 am.

He took this shot two hours ago.  It has shadows.  Can't be Europe.   :'(

It could be in Europe if I could watch it closely there's a black iron fences behind the shadow and the road is not a cement pavement.  And there are few European cities that have pigeons flocking around the city parks like Venice, London, Paris, etc... :duno:

Remember it is summer time in the Northern Hemisphere and the further north you are the longer the daylight...  example..Amsterdam sunset was at 10:04 PM  today, July 5...  Iceland.. 11:51PM.... don't discount long shadows...  short hours of darkness in the summertime...

Trust me!  It was dark in any part of Europe that matters when that shot was taken.  Sure the sun was visible above the arctic circle but really, do you think he's tweeting and taking pictures up there?

The shot was 2 hours old at 6:11 pm Pacific time.
That was 1:11 am in Amsterdam, Solar altitude was -14.47 degrees.
That was 12:11 am in London, Solar altitude was -14.76 degrees.
That was 1:11 am in Oslo, Solar altitude was -7.27 degrees.
That was 2:11 am in St. Petersburg, Solar altitude was -6.16 degrees.
That was 11:11 pm in Reykjavik, Solar altitude was 1.27 degrees (too low to make the shadows as seen in the shot).

Just take a look at the Earth shadow curve and you can see where it was dark.

So sorry.. Did not mean to cause such a stir. I could not tell what time the picture was actually taken. I was “only” saying that unless one has traveled in those more northern areas in the summer..one may not be aware how late the sun stays up!... so just a simple comment not to discount those elements….not necessarily for that particular photo, but any photo where those things may make a difference..that’s all folks!   now back to tracking...

No problem.  Actually, I'm hoping that they are still in Europe because we need more locations to flesh out the route.

Need more solid Tweets.

RESEARCHRESEARCHRESEARCH

The poster posted on 8:28am on 5 July, presumed Milan, Italy time. flightstats shows several flights from Africa arriving in Milan between 12:00am to 08:00am on 5 July. It is very likely that the poster flew in from Addis Ababa (earlier posts indicate she was on a volunteer trip)

Flight ET 708 touched down at 05:15am local time in Milan on 5 July. It was a 7-hour flight from ADD. This could be the flight the poster was on, and possibly the racers he/she spotted. Further searching shows ET 870 from 03:05pm Lilongwe time which arrived 07:45pm Addis Ababa time.

Teams could have left Lilongwe on the afternoon of 4 July on ET870 to ADD the same night. At that night around 11pm teams could have boarded ET708 to Milan. 3 hours after touch down in Italy, we have our possible sighting.  :jam:

Alternatively, others' conjecture about the Amsterdam to Milan connection is also possible due to multiple flights. I just brought up this flight sequence as it seems clearer and more credible time-wise. I'm not 100% sure if they are still in Milan now, or if they were there at all. But it's a start!  :hearts:
I hope poster can be contacted asap.

Also:

There is a comment that she expected to be in Milan by 515 PM
She gave someone her Italian phrasebook, wondered where they would be going.

Sadly, I see no way to contact her...

Excellent!! This strongly suggests that our "missing link" after Phuket could be Kuala Lumpur!! Great find thanks!
