TAR 18 Ep 9 "We're Good American People" (Switzerland)
« on: April 16, 2011, 05:35:38 AM »
Thanks to racer for the title find!

AN IMPENDING DOUBLE U-TURN PUTS THE REMAINING TEAMS ON EDGE, AND ONE TEAM HAS A NIGHTMARE OF A TIME TRYING TO CONSUME A SWISS DELICACY, ON "THE AMAZING RACE," SUNDAY, APRIL 24

"We're Good American People" (Switzerland) - The stress of the Race begins to take its toll when a Double U-Turn is revealed, and one Team struggles to consume a local delicacy while others become acquainted with Swiss hospitality, on THE AMAZING RACE, Sunday, April 24

=====================================

EPISODE 9 SUMMARY!!

A HUGE thanks to Neobie's incredible on site Detective work in Zermatt for jumpstarting our spoilers and to the rest of the team (especially raina, DrRox, The Prophet, walkingpneumomia, and of course tombc52)  who provided eyewitness accounts, locations, routes, maps, times, screencap aanalysis, and theories, we have been able to cover this leg from start to finish!! It is so detailed that I wanted to pull it all together.

Neobie gave us an estimated TIMELINE as well:

It looks like, to me:
Pit Start at Salzburg, before 6.00am
Train from Salzburg to Feldkirch, around 6.30am
Taxi from Feldkirch to Liechtenstein, around 10.00am
Roadblock at Liechtenstein: Moped measurement, around 10.30am
Taxi (or, a smaller possibility, bus) from Liechtenstein to Sargans, around 11.30am
Train from Sargans to Zermatt, around 12.00pm
Detour at Zermatt: Luggage or Fondue (Cheesy Costumes or Cheesy Cuisine - just a joking guess), around 6.00pm
Pit Stop at Zermatt, around 7.30pm

So have fun!! The underlining means there is a LINK to more info, the pictures are thumbnails so click-click to enlarge them.

Teams depart from Salzburg and travel by train to Feldkirch Austria.

From Feldkirch, they catch a taxi

(Cowboys and FTBE bunched; Gallory trailing)

to Schaanwald, Liechtenstein, where they receive their first Route Info near the Kaiser AG buiding, within walking distance of the border.
.

Gary and Mallory, who arrived last in the previous leg, must complete a Speedbump before moving on.

They must figure out how to fuel a moped.

The Roadblock is ride a VELOSOLEX the length of Liechtenstein,

and measure the exact length of the country.
Your moped has an odometer, so any mistake in direction will cause your total to be wrong, and force you to start again.

Doing the Roadblock are Jet , Gary, FT, Jen, Vyxsin and Justin.

Bikers turn in their estimated distance to famed Olympic skier Marco Büchel.

If their totals are correct, the bikers are directed to rejoin their teammates at Balzer Castle (aka Gutenberg Castle)

and receive their next Route Info clue from their teammate.

Teams must then travel by bus to Sargans train station.

Take the train from Sargans to Zermatt (via Zurich and Visp).

On arrival to the Zermatt train station, teams will find the Detour clue.

Thanks to Neobie's Detective work and the later promos, we know the tasks are:

FONDUE!

With the location being discovered by Raina as being here:
http://www.walliserkanne.ch/walliserkanne_zermatt_restaurant_en.htm

We see Zev and Justin doing this task here:

With Justin seeming to be having trouble here:

and a shot of The Cowboys here: (note the outfits, this shot confirms either them being U-Turned or an unusual Detour switch on their part.)

The other Detour is deliver luggage from the train station to various Zermatt Hotels. Teams must deleiver a number of pieces of luggae to several different hotels, and importantly, retrieve some luggage tag receipts to turn in at the end of the task.

Teams who complete the task successfully are given the next ROUTE Info clue, which THANKS TO NEOBIE we know directs them to find
the Ulrich Inderbinen Fountain

in the Histerdorf

This is the site of the DOUBLE U-TURN. And some goats.

TWO teams MAY be put at risk here.

Seeing the Cowboys at one Detour Option in the uniform of the second Detour Option strongly suggests they are the victim of one of the available U-Turns.

Will another team face the double U-Turn as well?? Who does the Yielding??

The next Route Info Clue directs the teams to take Electric Taxis to the PITSTOP

Bergrestaurant-Moos
Moosstrasse 77, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

PANORAMA:
http://bergrestaurant-moos.ch/pano/index.html

where one team WILL BE ELIMINATED.

WHO wins the leg? WHO will be eliminated??

Find out

Thanks Neobie!

Liechtenstein: Thanks apskip!

From RAINA! Thanks!!

Looking at Amazing Line map that they had in the preview, this should be the route map with the Schaanwald being the start point, Balzers being the end point and the gas station in the middle.  It's exactly 9.5 km to the gas station from the start and exactly 9.5 km from the gas station to Balzers.

.com/zl7zog.jpg]Route With Gas Station (B) Location (Slightly bigger)

I couldn't find any bike shops near the gas station (there might be some there obviously, just couldn't find them.  There is one near Balzers and one in Triesenberg.  Both are after the gas station.

I guess Lichtenstein can't be a separate leg since Brazil is on the 1st and the final on the 8th.
Physics alone is not enough.

We NEVER had it as a separate leg.

The moped thing is nice, but for $70K and a little imagination the producers could have created some awesome tasks.

Again, the findings from my little Zermatt trip. The glacier will almost certainly be the following leg, not sure about the railway station task and the fountain?

THE TRAIN STATION
The only feasible way to enter Zermatt is by train, and as we know from Tombc52's spoiler, the train from Liechtenstein involves a change at Zurich and Visp. Teams would have arrived in the evening, with LaKisha/Jennifer scheduled to arrive at 5.34pm. Sunset on 7 Dec is at 4.38pm, so I'd doubt any tasks outside of town for the rest of the first leg. That being said, it seems that there is a task taking place right at the train station itself! More in the next section.

THE LOCAL HOTELS
There seems to have been a task with teams carrying luggage from the train station to hotels around the area. Teams were reportedly running up and down Bahnhofstrasse and Hinterdorfstrasse. Some possible hotels are the Mont Cervin Palace, the Hotel Phoenix and the Hotel Primavera. On another note, production was housed at the Hotel Ambassador, not far from the train station.

THE GLACIERS
Teams were seen performing tasks at Theodulgletscher and Furggsattel. There may have been, on top of the avalanche search task, another task that involved rescuing someone or something from a mountain crevice.

AND A FOUNTAIN
This is the Ulrich Inderbinen fountain, dedicated to a mountaineer who climbed the Matterhorn a staggering 370+ times. Sounds like a Pit Stop to me, but I can't be sure. It's semi-open to the public, but the surrounding streets are easily closed off. Production was seen milling around here for a while.

Gary and Mallory are chasing down a taxi at the train station in FELDKIRCH, AUSTRIA. This is the Austrian jumping-off point to Liechtenstein, and where I based myself because Liechtenstein was so crazily expensive to stay in!

forgive me for being off topic, but i am wondering why the narrator of the preview for episode 9 is not phil.  normally phil is the one narrating "next week on TAR, ....." probably not relevant, but it's something that jumped at me.
