Peach, have we considered this Mumbai sighting?
http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,23690.msg580196.html#msg580196

Yes of course. I think it boils down to the fact that it isn't all that easy to get out of Varanasi.

Delhi and Mumbai are two flight options.

The best lights into Vienna in the early morning are from Delhi...

SO IF all the flights into Delhi were fulll from Varanasi, and teams had to go V>Mumbai>Delhi, then the timing is possible. But makes much better sense to go V>Delhi>Vienna. And IIRC, apskip found some Bangkok routings that also work.

And while I found the source for the Delhi sighting of the Cowboys completely reliable ...this one seems not so much.
Not enough to rule it out, just...funny. :duno:

To go through Mumbai perhaps they are leaving India, on the way to Austria. This sighting was on 12/5. He did identify three teams.

He does seem a little odd though, once again no mention of being in India, tweeting kevjumba (what's with that) I don't know.

Here is what I had on the PRIMARY TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS thread from Varanasi to Delhi on 12/4:

IT336 1358 1521
9W724 1530 1707
SG119 1615 1750

Flight from Delhi to Vienna on Saturday 12/4:
OS34 0254 0556

This could be off by one day if there was an extended pit stop. It is trivial for teams to fly from Mumbai to Delhi. From 1300 to 2100 on a Saturday (Dec. 4), I counted 17 nonstop flights.

The problem is getting to Mumbai from Varanasi. There is only one flight AI695 1330 1530. There are 3 flights from Varanasi to Delhi, so my bet is that most teams went direct to Delhi.

As to going through Bangkok, there is an equivalent to OS 34 above, OS26 nonstop from Bangkok to Vienna 2355 0535+1. However, getting from Varanasi to Bangkok takes two connections (which is 3 total to get to Vienna)

Anyway I saw they were carrying these envelopes marked amazing race. I was curious. Some sort of race? Hope I was on tv!!!

I'm guessing Jet\Cord, Gary\Mallory, Ron\Chris. :duno:
Whoever it was, they had to have gone through Mumbai. Unless of course it is a fake which cannot be ruled out.

Interesting to see all the connections from Mumbai to Delhi.

Without going back to look, I believe that in other seasons with stops in India, teams frequently had to get to Mumbai to get out of India, and often had to go to Dehli from elsewhere to do that. Conversely when teams were on a west-to-east route through India, teams often had to fly into Mumbai in order to connect to other locations in India.

Bottom line: except when Mumbai is the destination, teams often have had to fly in or out of Mumbai to get elsewhere.

theschnauzers,

Why talk in generalities when we have the specifics available. The flight listings I utilize have this as the top 7 flights from Mumbai to Vienna:
via Delhi (all on OS34) 4
via Dubai (on OS840)  2
via London                  1

Combine that with the information above that there are 3 flights from Varanasi to Delhi and only 1 from Varanasi to Mumbai.

What are the most logical conclusions? I conclude that although it is possible that teams flew through Mumbai to get to Vienna, most of them would have probably gone through Delhi either directly or less likely via Mumbai.

Remember that only two or three teams were possibly seen there so the remaining teams may have gone on a more mainstream route directly through Delhi.
So apskip's info doesn't really discount the sighting. It seems that it is yet to be proven right or wrong.

apskip, you're speaking of your research this season (which we won't know for certain for another couple of weeks), I'm speaking of flight behavior in other seasons in the past. To-may-to, to-mah-to.

Clutch mentions the incense being from the detour in Lijiang. I can't remember it that specifically, but I seem to recall seeing it somewhere in the Lijiang leg. However, I may be recalling the speculation here from before that episode.

I agree with the others about the bull being in Varanasi. They are everywhere in Varanasi, at least in the pictures I looked through. In the roads and streets, in the narrow alleys, even along the ghats and banks along the river. No doubt making dung a overly abundant and cheap building material.

Next to the incense is the letter "maa" in Hindi or Sanskrit.  But you can find those in Buddhist temples as well, so not that helpful.

And while the dung can be used as building material, the little cakes they're making are probably going to be used as a source of fuel.  In place of burning wood in a stove, people burn the dung cakes or whatever you want to call them.  Always give the food a uniquely special taste.

Then why are they plastering it to the wall?

From what we have for now, I am going to go ahead and guess that the cowboys or Ron and Christina are eliminated this leg.

The dung is stuck to the wall when it is wet. :holysheep
You know it is dry enough for burning when it falls off the wall.

Agreed. There's not any evidence as to what team was eliminated.

Agreed. There's not any evidence as to what team was eliminated.

But there is evidence as to who should be safe this week.

We know from spoilers that The Cowboys, Kisha and Jen, and The Trotters are all almost certainly confirmed as being seen further down the way.

Ron and Christina and Gary and Mallory were (maybe) seen in Mumbai. If all these sightings are confirmed then the goths or Zev and Justin would be gone this time. I wouldn't really be surprised at this as I would expect those two to go next anyway.

I personally consider the trotters sighting in Brazil as slightly questionable because it seems that all teams would have had to spend that night in Brazil in order to make it on the same flight to Miami.

Okay...Something slightly odd!

In rewatching this week episode 6...it seems that in the clip with Phil describing the two Detours...that at least some of these are in VARANASI, and not Kolkata!

And our Hindu holy man from the Intro caps also makes an appearance.

Can anyone snag an address to confirm the street scenes? I can confirm the ghat

Can't really help, but cap #5 and 6 - one of the signs behind the Sadhu seems to be a political ad for someone named Arun Sahu and the store next to it says "Priya Hair Dresser"   The rest of the Hindi is harder to read as it's blurry and I'm about 15 years out of practice.

I found this article in the Times of India that mentions Arun Sahu as a political figure in Varanasi. http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-03-09/varanasi/28671770_1_sp-workers-samajwadi-party-mla-abdul-samad-ansari

SP protest ends with more arrests
TNN, Mar 9, 2011, 09.28pm IST

VARANASI: The three-day agitation of Samajwadi Party (SP) launched in protest against the BSP-led state government ended with the arrest of 250 party workers on Wednesday.

The SP workers carried out procession from different places in the city to express their protest against the alleged misrule of the Mayawati government. SP MLA Abdul Samad Ansari led the procession in Bari Bazar area while Arun Sahu of Samajwadi Vyapar Sabha led the procession from JP Mehta College. The SP workers also burnt, he effigy of the chief minister. According to SP (City) Vijay Bhushan, 250 SP workers were arrested on Wednesday.

But I also find references to Arun Sahu in Kolkata as a part of the Campaign Against Child Labor. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1101230/jsp/orissa/story_13367385.jsp

The story is too long to quote here. I tend to think the one from Varanasi is more likely to have political ads.
