May I suggest China, or Japan? I think there are mountains in the background and the concentration of multi-storied buildings with similar architecture and equal heights, make me think China may be more likely

Phil mentioned a spiritual ritual in Japan as a task. Any correlation with this?

I would think this screencap came from the Kolkata leg. It appears to me to be taken on one of the distributaries in the Ganges/Bhramaputra delta. Although Varanasi is also on the Ganges, from looking at pics of the Ganges at Varanasi....there appears to be higher topography near the river. The topography in this screencap is just so flat, it appears to be much closer to the Indian Ocean than Varanasi. Plus all those seagulls in the pic, mean ocean is close to me. I wouldnt think there would be seagulls at Varanasi. Since Peach has been there, maybe she can fill us in on that aspect.

I remember birds.... vultures in particular. :ascared

I have a complete HD set of the caps but can't do them right now. Will do my best to get them up later.

re the incense...we know the spiritual ritual involves freezing water.

Quote
Kanchu Misogi is a traditional midwinter festival of purification that is still practiced in Japan today. The event includes a ritual called mizugori, where participants are poured with ice cold water for purification and good fortune

There are many icy water ritual vids out there, this is just one. But something like maybe?

I loved and was awed by Varanasi when I was there. There are also loads of these vids, but this one has lots of boats for comparison. I think the boat style is very similar. And there are also a lot of Flickr+Varanasi seagull pics, so quite possible. The only boating I did was on the Ganges, not so far to an estuary, so I don't know for sure. I will look thru my slides one of these days!

For #9 I'll put my chips on the Rio-Niteroi area. The colonial houses in the background are similar to those found in the area, there's carnival-type activity (you can see people dancing in the background a few frames later) and, although it's rather skimpy evidence, the streamers match the colors of the Niteroi flag.

The people in that cap certainly look more Brasilian than South Asian.....especially the two to the left of the guy with the tamborine......and lots of cowboy hats in Brasil.......they have lots of rodeos too.

This could be a pre Christmas festival.......Carnaval is just now going on.....so wouldnt think it would be one of those, unless production got one of the Samba Schools to rig up a scene......like the gypsys in Romania.

I am not saying it is not in Niteroi........I was just adding some more explanation. I will go searching Samba Schools and see what colors I can match.

Let's not forget TAR has a history of using the (a?) samba club to set something up in Rio for the Race. (TAR 2).

Just a note for everyone....Samba Schools are not schools......the are private social clubs similiar to country clubs in the US. They hold dances on certain nights of the week for their members. From late Nov/Dec to Feb/March, whenever Carnaval is, they are usually open to the public. Carnaval is the Spanish/Portugues equilivent to French Mardi Gras......the pre-Lenten festival.

The main colors on the costumes in that screencap, to me, are red and yellow/gold. The main Niteroi Samba School, Unidos do Viradouro. Its address is: Avenue of the Contour, l6 - Barreto – Niterói. The schools colors are blue and rose.

There are many schools......the top 12 get to dance in the Sambadrome every year. None of the top 12 this year use red and yellow/gold. The schools that dance in the Sambadrome might have between 3,000 and 5,000 dancers. They do sell spots to tourists that want to come down and dance with them.

I suspect that they were going to use Mangueira in TAR2. It is probably the most famous for tourists. Mangueria is open to tourists year round. I think the word got out and a huge crowd was expected, so Production switched to a smaller, less well known school.

DrRox, my recollection is that WRP set up a "fake" samba club location in TAR 2 to replace the original location that was going to be used. I do remember that the taxi drivers had trouble finding the address, and IIRC the Racers that season later confirmed the last minute switch.

Dr. Rox,

I have been to Varanasi and Kolkata (back when they were Benares and Calcutta), but I remember Varanasi as fairly flat at the level above the Ganges River. the altitude of Varanasi is listed as 80.71 meters (250 feet) and the Ganges has another 600 km to go before reaching Kokata and near sea level.

However, I expect as you do that the photo in question is somewhere in the greater Kolkata area.

apskip,

I have never been to Benares/Varanasi. I spent the better part of a summer crossing Southwest and South Asia. As far as the sub-continent, I got on trains (40 years ago this summer) at Landi Kotal in the Kyber Pass in Pakistan and stayed on them on my trip.  Except for buses from Lahore, Pk to Amritsar, India with a stop to watch the nightly show at the Wagha Crossing. From there I went to Delhi, Agra, Bombay, Goa, back to Bombay across the Deccan Plateau to Raipur to Calcutta. I had planned to go to Dimapur, Assam but by the time I got to Calcutta, I was pretty sick. I had aquired some naughty little parasites. I had planned to go to Assam to go to Kohima and Imphal then to Myitkyina, Lashio and Rangoon in Burma. I didnt get to see much in Calcutta. I spent about 3 days in hospital in Calcutta to get well enough to fly and then flew home to Cairo for another week in hospital.

Where the Ganges falls out of the Himalayas and transitions from a braided river to a meandering river, the elevation is about 330m (approx 1000 ft.) It travels a long way to drop that 1000 feet. That North India-Ganges plain is a synclinal fold at the base of the Himalayas and has a pretty constant gradient.

For me, this one is very similar to Akihabara, Tokyo (Japan). Akihabara is a major shopping area for electronic, computer, anime goods.

Scenes:

10. The mystery medieval building who is still unsolved since Season 14 (I guess?)

Couldn't this be Threave castle in Scotland?
Notice the small circular building in the back.
The first picture is from the intro and the second is of Threave castle.

Maybe someone more adept with google earth could make a comparison?

Google maps does not have any good aerial images for this area. But form the pictures I can find I would be 90% certain that we have a match.

I don't think that there will be task about the drum on lion hill.Lijiang.The pitstop of Lijiang leg is also located on Lion hill... and we know the last task before pitstop was on Sifang street ,so the drum was probably just shooted for intro.
