TAR18: Ronald Hsu & Christina Hsu (father/daughter)
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:48:44 AM »

Ron and Christina

Name (Age): Ronald Hsu (61)
Hometown: Tacoma, Wash.
Connection to your Teammate: Father
Current Occupation: Vice President
Previous Season/Result: Season 12/2nd place

Biggest mistake you made in your previous season: Not being uplifting.

Most memorable moment from your first Race: In Croatia when we conquered our fear of heights and came in first.

Favorite place you visited on your first season: Croatia because it was so beautiful along the Adriatic Sea. I want to have a second honeymoon with my wife there.

Why do you want to run the Race again? When else do you have an opportunity to travel around the world like this?

How have you changed since the last time you competed? I've gotten grayer and wiser.

What are you passionate about? My family.

People would be surprised to learn: I make the most delicious and nutritious smoothies.

One location that you hope to go on this adventure: St. Petersburg, Russia --for its great Hermitage museum

Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on the Race together: I had back surgery last year so I cannot run as fast as the younger racers. It may be a struggle to keep up with them.

What do you hope to accomplish by running the Race again (other than winning one million dollars): I hope to have a great time with my daughter before she gets married.

Pet peeve about your teammate: Her navigation skills are shaky.

What would you do if you won the million dollars? Retire. I also want to write a book about my parents walking on foot over 800 miles in the winter of 1947 to escape from the civil war in Northern China.

Any strategic changes you will make heading into this Race: I will be more uplifting to my teammate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name (Age): Christina Hsu (29)
Hometown: Wash., D.C.
Connection to your Teammate: Daughter
Current Occupation: Consultant
Previous Season/Result: Season 12/2nd place

Biggest mistake you made in your previous season: Not taking a deep breath at the final Road Block in Alaska.

Most memorable moment from your first Race: Milking a camel in Burkina Faso and drinking the camel's milk.

Favorite place you visited on your first season: I'll never forget zip lining 200 feet into the Adriatic Sea in Croatia.

Why do you want to run the Race again? It's a second-in-a-lifetime chance to see the world!

How have you changed since the last time you competed? I've gained a lot more perspective on what is important in life and became happier.

What are you passionate about? Family, friends and contributing to the local community

People would be surprised to learn: I completed my first triathlon last year.

One location that you hope to go on this adventure: Machu Picchu in Peru because that is where my fiancé and I would like to travel.

Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on the Race together: Completing physically exhaustive tasks while sleep deprived.

What do you hope to accomplish by running the Race again (other than winning one million dollars): To enjoy the moment with my dad and worry less about the outcome.

Pet peeve about your teammate: My dad snores.

What would you do if you won the million dollars? I want to adopt a Labrador Retriever and buy a house.

Any strategic changes you will make heading into this Race: I'm going to relax and keep everything in perspective.

From AE's interview with Luke, Luke said that Ron & Christina is the only team he's worried about.
The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move

He also gets to tease teams a little more easily, particularly when teams reach a pit stop in Sunday's season premiere that begins in Palm Springs, Calif., before racing to Sydney, Australia.

"There's a familiarity that allows me to tweak them even more because I know them and I can call them on things," Mr. Keoghan said. He said one of the most interesting stories this season will be to see if domineering dad Ron Hsu will go easier on his daughter, Christina, this time around.

"Has his behavior really changed since the last race or will he revert to his old pattern of behavior because of the pressure of the race?" Mr. Keoghan asked.

Keoghan explains the show's picks below.

Ronald and Christina — Season 12, 2nd place
Last we saw them: Christina got stuck on the final memory task, costing them the lead and the chance to become the first parent-child team winners.
Why they deserve a second chance: Many remember Ron's explosive personality and constant belittling of his daughter, which he toned down as Season 12 winded up. "Ron, in my opinion, probably went through the biggest transformation on the Race," Keoghan says. "He was quite humbled by the experience. You dream for transformation in a character. But how much residual behavior is still left? I was interested to see what would happen when they're under pressure again. You'll see, under pressure, some of those old traits come to the surface again. Then, it's how do they move forward? Did they learn from the past?"

I know that it's already been answered, but yes. I think she was talking about getting engaged and then said "My fiancee is Azaria. We met on Season 12" and they showed a clip of Azaria and Ron shaking hands...

Does anyone know what the confection actually was?

It looked to me to be peanut brittle, as I'm assuming the use of peanut in some Chinese cuisine in this country was brought over from China, even though peanuts are a staple crop in parts of the southern US.

In which case I can understand why Ron was wanting it so much as something with a lot of protein and carbs for energy.

It's peanut candy. I've provided a google link for the various peanut candy images!

It taste real good and countries like Taiwan and China are famous for them. It's REALLY sweet and sticky. Very hard but chewy at the same time too.
