We grew up in Zermatt and we have full knowledge of the local conditions, the necessary contacts, the history and the region all around Zermatt.
For many years now, we have been working as mountain guides and mountain rescuers for different film and photo shootings.

Our very own RFF G-Man was in Vienna the same time as the teams. Sadly, he did not stumble across them, but sent these photos of what we might see:

From G-Man:

Quote
One source says that the teams had to find a clue at a monument near the Christmas Market.

The most recognizable monument near the market is that of local icon Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart which is in the Burggarten across from the Christmas Market "Wiener Christkindlmarkt" in front of the Rathaus (Town Hall).

So here are pix of the locations:

1. Wiener Christkindlmarkt in front of the Rathaus

2. Monument to W. A. Mozart.

:ty G-Man!!

Both seem like good bets in this new era of TAR HD.

Several other reality TV shows have been broadcast in HD for years. (CBS' "Survivor" upgraded to HD in 2009.) After years of blaming the expense and challenge of using HD equipment on the road, "Amazing Race" producers made the change for the 18th season, promising crisp images of racers climbing a glacier in Switzerland and interacting with animals in China.

The switcheroo is striking in the premiere episode when 11 teams of veteran contestants who have never won the show's $1 million grand prize set off from a wind farm in Palm Springs, Calif., for sunny Sydney, Australia, where the challenges include diving into a murky shark tank and navigating a 16-foot skiff along the glistening Manly Cove.

"Visually, it will be a much richer show," promised executive producer Bertram van Munster. "We're glad that CBS gave us the greenlight to do this in HD. We didn't do so bad in the regular format. We won the Emmy for best reality television cinematography, but now we can go a little further with our new modern technology on those big beautiful flatscreens."

The move to HD didn't dictate this season's course, said van Munster, which includes stops in Yokohama, Japan; Lijiang and Kunming, China; Kolkata and Varanasi, India; Vienna, Austria; Zermatt, Switzerland; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For the first time, the race will visit Liechtenstein, where teams were tasked with measuring the landlocked country on mo-peds.

"I think one of the great aspects of this race is all the stark contrasts," said Keoghan. "For example, going from Varanasi to Zermatt, you've got this hot, colorful place in Asia then a very cold, snowy place in Europe. The teams that were racing through those countries were able to see the extreme differences, and we're able to show that off in HD."

Several game-changing twists return for the "Unfinished Business" edition. In the premiere, Keoghan informs the players that the last team to arrive on the mat will automatically face a U-turn, forcing the duo to perform both Detour challenges, while first-place finishers will receive the Express Pass, allowing a team to skip one task during the race.

So I just got back from a quick weekend trip to Zermatt, and although it's pretty difficult to get any information out of official sources, there happened to be no lack of locals who happened to see crazy Americans running around! Granted though, that filming took place three months ago, so I don't have any specific team spoilers. However, I can pinpoint several locations and possibly a few tasks...

THE TRAIN STATION
The only feasible way to enter Zermatt is by train, and as we know from Tombc52's spoiler, the train from Liechtenstein involves a change at Zurich and Visp. Teams would have arrived in the evening, with LaKisha/Jennifer scheduled to arrive at 5.34pm. Sunset on 7 Dec is at 4.38pm, so I'd doubt any tasks outside of town for the rest of the first leg. That being said, it seems that there is a task taking place right at the train station itself! More in the next section.

THE LOCAL HOTELS
There seems to have been a task with teams carrying luggage from the train station to hotels around the area. Teams were reportedly running up and down Bahnhofstrasse and Hinterdorfstrasse. Some possible hotels are the Mont Cervin Palace, the Hotel Phoenix and the Hotel Primavera. On another note, production was housed at the Hotel Ambassador, not far from the train station.

THE GLACIERS
Teams were seen performing tasks at Theodulgletscher and Furggsattel. There may have been, on top of the avalanche search task, another task that involved rescuing someone or something from a mountain crevice.

AND ONE MORE LOCATION
This place may have been the Pit Stop, or just a simple Route Marker. Production was seen milling around here for a while, but it's up to you guys to find out what this is!

Map coming soon...
