The aerial tram is in a canyon on the NE side of Mt San Jacinto, just west of the NW part of Palm Springs. There is a good road out of the canyon to that major road.

I doubt if it will prove to be of any use, but I rode on that aerial tram about 20 to 25 years ago. I don't remember it well enough to know where it was relative to the starting line. It was an interesting ride as there were several (5?) climatic regimes on the mountain from the desert floor at the bottom to an alpine environment at the top. I did some hiking on one or two of the trails at the top. I also remember having a good meal at the restaurant at the top of the tram.

I too rode it in the 1970s. I remember those climate zones. The temperature difference between the top and the canyon floor was 40 degrees, which I understood to be typical.

Well I went on a little 100 mile field trip this morning

I found the right spot.  And I found the tattered remains of four paper airplanes after an exhaustive 2 hour search of the region.  I also found an old glove, a CD with bullet holes and lots of bones  :ascared

Now what are the odds that there'd be paper airplane remains right at that location?

Someone didn't clean the place up as carefully as they should have.

Thanks everybody!  It was a lot of fun.  I really can't wait to see it all go down.

I wonder if TAR18's racers will go and get Qantas tattoos now?

Here is another way to locate the start line. Here is the screencap from the promo......with the benchmark circled.

Here is close-up of the benchmark....

And here is a map of the location of that particular benchmark. The locations are recorded by the National Geodetic Survey. There are approximately 750,000 benchmarks across the United States. They are very precisely surveyed points. The information they contain is latitude, longitude and elevation above sea level.

Thanks to Texas Lady for Images 1 and 3, and to Chateau for Image 2.

I'm gonna bet CBS never thought we'd figure this one out this precisely without an eyewitness.
