I think Nick & Vicki, now that all the cannon fodder teams (and the stronger, but screwed Katie & Rachel) are gone, are pretty much Dandrewing or Brian & Ericka-ing their way through the race -- getting by only because someone makes a more egregious error than they do.  But unlike either of those teams, they don't see it unjustly rewarded with a F3 finish.

I like to call those kinds of teams cockroaches. This term was coined by Karlyn of Lyn and Karlyn in season 10 referring to themselves. They too went to the F3, anybody remember them or that quote?

I had forgotten that that was actually the title of an episode in season 10. It is the F4 leg of that year and is the leg with the famous tomato throwing task in Spain.

Teams are clowning around when they learn a traditional Russian circus act, but it's no joke when multiple teams make a critical error and misread a clue, jeopardizing their positions in the Race on the next episode of The Amazing Race.

So the critical error appears to happen during the circus challenge?

Well, it doesn't specifically say that Gary & Mallory are the team that goes home.  All it says is that Gary & Mallory and Michael & Kevin weren't spotted beyond St. Petersburg.  Thus one of those two teams head for Elimination Station after St. Petersburg.  However, there are rumors that Michael & Kevin were doing a decoy run in South Korea, which indicates that they didn't go to Elimination Station.

TPTB can and have changed the number of teams that do decoy runs for whatever reason - Mel/Mike went to Sequesterville (though that was because they were *right* there) in TAR 14, and Marisa/Brooke did decoy runs in Portland in TAR 13. Geographically, it makes sense that they continue, but (and I think this goes for a lot of our spec based on spoilers) WRP can/will/and have changed protocol often.
Irregular pit stops. Random forced trasport, often inefficient. Airline connections through specified cities. NEL structure. More isolated task areas (though this season they're a lot better in that respect) - I don't think we can simply rely on precedent alone nowadays :(

(With all that said, Gary/Mallory are my pick for the boot  :'( )

That could be true Peach, but that pesky little comma in there makes me think it is a different event.

I'm still guessing it pertains to the walkabout (although if they all get on the same bus I don't see how their positions would be "jeopardized"). Also, unless they did some photo-trickery, Nick is walking west: his "moron" comment might be self-chastisement.

I am with you slowhatch. I think something happens between the circus and the church. We get the teams bunched at the HoO at the circus. Then we could end up with a 5-2 or 4-3 split getting on the shuttle busses to the RB. I like shuttle bus better than my previous charter bus. TPTB could have just one bus making a couple of round trips to the fort. It's not that far away.

I think that comma makes the reference to the error separate from whatever task the teams are learning at the circus.  It's very cleverly worded to make one think that the error(s) by the teams are at the circus, but unless the rules of punctuation have changed, that comma separates two distinct clauses in the sentence.

Misreading the clue suggests teams went to the wrong place at some point, and that several teams made the same mistake.  Whether it's one joint error, or the same error by teams separately isn't clear, and it may be something where several teams reach the pit stop and have to go back and do something correctly.  (We're overdue for one of those, aren't we?  Just for the entertainment value.)

Well, Nat & Kat and Nick & Vicki seem to be together at that church, so maybe their teams made the mistake?

I can see that happening as they seem to be wondering around looking frustrated, and I also agree with slowhatch that Nick could be criticizing himself.

The whole comma thing is getting a little carried away.

I agree that Nick & Vicki make the mistake but perhaps Brooke & Claire and Michael & Kevin are the other teams that make the critical mistake and Nat & Kat merely catch up to them and point out the right way.

There are obviously multiple different things that could happen in this case. It will be really hard to determine which idea is correct from the info we have.

Is it possible that misreading the clue could be forgetting to bring something with them to the pitstop therefore forcing them to either take a penalty or go back and get it?

# 1 and 2...red team and then Kevin behind Jill and Thomas

#3: Can we find the exact location of this wall?? Can someone find a matching pic? If so, we may be able to tell WHEN Thomas was there.

#4 and 5... Is this Nick and Vicki?? These frames come JUST before the caps of Steph and Chad spinning their plates...

The rest are to see if anyone can make out the destination on the front of the bus?? ???

If you add some brightness to the cap, the Pinkies can be seen behind Jumba. With the first three teams running in, I think it's like the Russian sub from an earlier season: the leading teams arrive very early in the morning and have to wait for the circus to open.

Can we assume that the detour may be before the scene outside the church?
If so then N/K, N/V, M/K and B/C would finish the detour before the the others. This theory is supported by the fact that Jill and Thomas switch on the Detour tasks. This would also make it possible for C/S to be eliminated because Micheal will take a long time at the RB allowing C/S to catch up but she will not overtake him.
Here is my speculated order to the leg:

1. Detour; N/K, N/V, M/K and B/C have no trouble (the other three may get behind by misreading a clue)
2. Probably picking up several clues before getting to the RB
3. Those four arrive at about the same time
4. All but M/K finish and leave to check in to the PS
5. G/M, C/S and J/T arrive at the RB
6. G/M and J/T finish the RB leaving "two racers to battle it out"
7. Chad and Stephanie are eliminated and M/K slide several spots to sixth.
