Deadliest Catch
« on: July 03, 2010, 12:30:32 PM »
Deadliest Catch is addictive, filming fishing for crab in the Bering Sea. The Discovery Channel will have a marathon of past shows on Saturday and Sunday, July 3 and 4th, 2010. If you have never seen this series, now is the time to catch up.

Each show highlights what is happening on one of five vessels. The Cornelia Marie, Kodiak, Time Bandit, Northwestern and The Wizard, the captains and crews.

You cannot watch without being drawn into their lives and the hardships of providing fresh crab that we eat without realizing how hard and dangerous it is to catch them and get them to shore. Chopping ice off the ships lines and railings so the boat won't capsize, pulling pots in freezing cold. Working day and night and not finding crab in the pots.

Here's a taste:

The next few episodes will continue to cover the agonizing condition of Captain Phil Harris who suffered a massive stroke hours after the Cornelius Marie docked to offload their crabs. He was found on the floor of his cabin completely paralyzed on the left side. Then flown to Anchorage where he underwent surgery to have part of his skull removed to relieve the pressure.

I wonder too, this was a huge season. So many unpredictable things happened. Will Edgar come back to help Sid? Who will take over if the brothers actually turn over the ship? Josh, on the Cornelia Marie, can he manage it? (I don't think so personally, his brother might be a help with the crew but he is so young and has a drug problem that needs to be addressed and taken care of.)

I'm sure Captain Bill will be back but he's not a favorite of mine.

Justin Tennison of 'Deadliest Catch' Dead at 33

'Deadliest Catch' star Justin Tennison was found dead in a Homer, Alaska hotel room on Tuesday, TMZ reports. The fisherman on the Time Bandit boat was 33 years old.

"Discovery Channel is saddened by the passing of Time Bandit crew member Justin Tennison," the 'Deadliest Catch' network wrote in a statement. "We send our sympathies to his entire family and fellow crew members during this most difficult time."

TMZ says a search of the hotel room, registered to Tennison, turned up "a small amount of marijuana, as well as several bottles of alcohol in the refrigerator. Cops tell us they believe there had been a party in the room the night before."

Justin Tennison's death comes just a year after 'Deadliest Catch' star Capt. Phil Harris's passing in February 2010 after a stroke.

Lt. Randy Rosencrans tells USA Today that Tennison died of unknown causes and the state medical examiner's office was set to conduct an autopsy Wednesday afternoon.

Time Bandit Capt. Andy Hillstrand wrote on Facebook:

Justin fished commercially for many years, living in Alaska for 28 years. He worked on the Time Bandit, alongside his second cousin, Eddie Uwekoolani, Jr., serving as Engineer during the tendering seasons, and joined the Time Bandit crew as a deckhand fishing the Red King 2010 and Opilio 2011 seasons.

Justin was tough as a bull and was an all-around good hand. The Captains and Crew appreciated his hard work and many contributions this past year. We will miss him terribly and wish his family all the best during this most difficult time.

EW notes that Tennison's boat has started a memorial on the Time Bandit's official website. There, friends, family and friends have begun sharing memories and condolences.

Sailor?? :lol3:

The season premire was good.. not great.. I was hoping for more Cornillia interaction and some behind the scenes stuff while they had  down time prepping for the season.

It's always hard with a new new cast of characters to enjoy any show and this proves to be so with me on this season. 1 whole new boat, several new faces on other boats.. and for the only the 2nd  time in 10 years they were alllowed to fish BLUE CRABS.

Seems like northwestern deckhand jake hasgrown weathered.. and has hopes of beign a captian. maybe that will be the  underlying story of the season.

Mike from the Time Bandit DID have his own boat but seeing him last nite i guess that wasnt too sucessful. :duno:

I hope there's alot of great storylines and fishing to be had this season.

it was nice to see the Coast Gaurd do  thier thing last nite!

Strap yourself in on the pulpit we are going for a Bering Sea Trip! :keeta:

Eating the head of a herring, one boat's tradition for the greenhorn before they set the first cage. I'd try for another boat personally.

Next week: Jake takes the wheel. This is a kid who has grown into a man over the past few seasons.

The boats:

Cornelia Marie

TYPE: 128-foot house aft

Number of POTS: 180

* KING CRAB CAPACITY: 312,000 lbs

* BUILT: 1989 Alabama

* CATCH SEASONS: 1 to 6

Captain:  Captain Derrick Ray

Engineer: Steve Ward

Deckhand: Josh Harris

Deckhand: Jake Harris

Deckhand:  Freddy Maugatai

Greenhorn: Ryan Simpson

The original Cornelia Marie had a extensive rebuild in 1995 that added 21 feet to her overall length and increased her catch holding capacity to one of the highest for a crabber. She is named after Cornelia Marie Devlin, a co-owner of the boat who handles much of the daily business of the boat's operation. The Cornelia Marie's twin Mitsubishi engines generate 630 horsepower for a top speed of around 10 knots but they've often been an engineer's and captain's nightmare.

Northwestern

TYPE: 127-foot Marco house forward vessel

POTS: 250

KING CRAB CAPACITY: 251,000 lbs

BUILT: 1977 Seattle, WA

HOME PORT: Seattle, WA

Captain: Sig Hansen

Deckboss/Engineer:Edgar Hansen

Deckhand/Backup Engineer: Norman Hansen

Deckhand: Nick Mavar, Jr.

Deckhand:Matt Bradley

DeckhandMark Peterson

Deckhand :Jake Anderson,  Jr.

The Northwestern was built by Sverre Hansen, a pioneer in the Alaskan king crab fishery and the father of Sig, Edgar and Norman. The original boat was 108 feet long and specifically designed to harvest king and tanner crabs in the Bering Sea. A few years later, when the king crab catches collapsed, the Northwestern became one of the first boats to fish for opilio crabs. Throughout the 1980's the Hansens and their boat kept busy fishing during most of the year by following the various crab populations' seasonal patterns. Twice since then the Northwestern has been lengthened to pack more crab and carry more pots.

Time Bandit

TYPE: 113-foot house aft

POTS: 137

KING CRAB CAPACITY: 120,000 lbs

HOME PORT: Homer, AK

BUILT: 1991 Coos Bay, OR

CATCH SEASONS: 1 to 6

Captain: Johnathan Hillstrand

Captain: Andy Hillstrand

Engineer/Cook Neal Hillstrand

Deckhand:  Scott Hillstrand

Deckhand: Eddie Uwekoolani

Deckhand: Mike Fourtner

Deckhand: Justin Tennison

Adorned with the Jolly Roger on the bow, the Time Bandit is the closest thing to a Pirate boat currently plying the Bering Sea. A family-run boat, the Time Bandit is skippered by brothers Johnathan Hillstrand during King Season and Andy Hillstrand during Opies with younger brother Neal acting as boat engineer/cook and Johnathan's son, Scott, working the deck. The two older brothers are well known for their antics: practical jokes, fireworks on deck and creative greenhorn hazing. But that doesn't mean they take fishing lightly

Seabrooke

TYPE: 109-foot house aft

POTS: 135

KING CRAB CAPACITY: 120,000 lbs

HOME PORT: Kodiak, AK

BUILT: 1979 Wilmington

Captain: Scott Campbell

Relief Captain/Engineer: Bob Perkey

Relief Captain/Engineer: Mike Bouray

Deckhand: Mac White

Deckhand: Derrick Haist

Deckhand/Greenhorn: Chris "Whipper" Welch

The Seabrooke is a leader among the "new pioneers" of crab fishing in the Bering Sea. Intent on taking on the old guard and making their mark, the aggressive crew is led by a young captain who will pull no punches to be the best in the fleet. The Seabrooke is also the "Corvette" of the Bering: it's fast, it's red and it packs heavy horsepower. The skipper plans to sail it into the weather to hunt on grounds away from the pack in order to bring home the crab. This is a boat made for serious fishing.

Ramblin' Rose

Captain: Elliott Neese

Deckhand boss: Kevin Davis

Deckhand:  Faresa Iaulualo

Deckhand: Tim Lovins

Deckhand: James Creel

Small and "economical" in the words of the skipper, the Ramblin' Rose is run by a young crew with a young skipper and a lighthearted attitude. In an odd dynamic, the greenhorn deckhand is the oldest man on the boat. The Rose isn't the prettiest boat in the fleet, but an agile vessel with men working hard for their money. On this boat, the pots are hand pushed because the crew is young and strong and they find it faster. Two of the crew are new to the boat, but they have fished before, and were recommended to the skipper by trusted friends. Most are single only the skipper among the full share crewmen has families or kids. Their youth and relative inexperience will be on display as they contend with the old warhorses the Rose has nowhere to go but up.

Wizard

TYPE: 155-foot house aft vessel

POTS: 250

KING CRAB CAPACITY: 400,000 lbs

BUILT: 1945 Brooklyn, NY

HOME PORT: Seattle, WA

CATCH SEASONS: 3 to 6

Captain: Keith Colburn

Relief Captain: Monte Colburn

First Mate: Gary Soper

Engineer: Lenny Lekanoff

Deckhand: Crosby LeVeen

Deckhand: Lynn Guitard

Greenhorn: Paul Edgren

The Wizard started out as a U.S. Navy yard oiler, built at the end of World War II, but never put into naval service. The boat sat mothballed in Boston Harbor until 1978 when she was purchased by fisherman John Jorgenson who oversaw her conversion into a crab boat that went to work in the Bering Sea fisheries the following year. Both Keith and Monte Colburn learned many of their crab captain skills while working for John on the Wizard. In 2005, Keith and his wife Florence purchased the vessel with the confidence that they could maintain the boat's consistently high production levels. These high yields are possible, in part, because of the large tanks inherited from her original construction.

Kodiak

Captain: Wild Bill Wichrowski

Engineer: Adam McCalden

Deckhand:  Tony Castillo

Deckhand: Jake Jolibois

Deckhand: Eric Anderson

Greenhorn: Zack Larson

Last year's new boat in the Deadliest Catch fleet, Kodiak was more like an old school gunslinger returning to town to lay down a claim. It's captain, Wild Bill Wichrowski, had spent most of his life resisting pressure from fish and game officials, regulators, and political types who never seem to give up trying to "civilize" Dutch harbor, its crab fleet and Bering Sea fishing Coming back to cold waters from the warm seas of Mexico, the old pot slinger reappeared to the crab game to find he had grown rusty, but no less ornery. He even stayed frosty toward his newest greenhorn, Zach, his own son.

WOW TL! you sure put alot of work into posting the info! Thanks soo much! :hugs:

I'm still not completely  invested yet with them on a personal level.. i love the show but some of the character and mood swings are the same ol stuff! Especially on The Wizard!

Notice how there was absoulutley no fottage of the Time Bandit!! Wonder if that was  them shooting themselves in the fot with the contract agreement or that there really wasnt enough footage of fishing for them to piece together anything worth while?

As for the Cornillia marie. I'm still sad over  the vibe on the boat.. even after the editing! I see it as a sinking ship :'(

I'm hoping the 2 new boats will make for some good adventure watching.

I'm On standby hoping next weeks show is ALL about the fishing! :keeta:

I do like the addition of the new boats and captains and the Cornelia Mare is depressing at the moment. I wonder if the boys should have gone to other boats, split up.or go to school and study so they could captain a boat. Think how bad it must be for the boys and the crew without Phil.

I'm sure we'll see Jonathan and Andy more as the season progresses.

Evidently, he didn't! He's in trouble but he's no different than the other captains, this isn't a good season for the blue crabs.

Can't say I've seen a stoner but Jake doesn't look good to me.

:lol3: @ TL  regarding stoner!

Blue crabs seem elusive this season to soo many of the boats i really wonder why they made that choice to go for them?( I know price is higher ) But the pay off odds are slim.

The green horn on the seabrook  breaking down part cuz he was called a name was funny! YOu just know when they have him edited as " I can do this" you know he whimps out! lets see how long he does last!

I'm thinking they want us to see more of the newer boats and captains than the older ones.  Again because of the protest (i think) that the time bandit put up during the  off season. :duno:

it's gonna take time to enjoy the new boys on the show.

Will the cornilla Marie make it out of this season with ANY profit??   There's gonna be a MUTINY on board that ship!   It's a shame that no one fromm previous excursions on that boat can vessel her on top of the crab.. those boys and the othe men all need a paycheck!

:ugot I'm tired of that captian always thorwoing up  the boys  POP in thier face!!  man up if u can't find the crab.. call for help. no one in the entire fleet wants to see the boys first seaosn out with out thier father be a failure!

Seems like next week he decides to go "CSI" on jake looking for his stash of weed..  :smoke: what  difference does that make if YOU"RE the one  driving the boat.. put them on the crabs! you have the technology!! I just dont get it :duno:

Greenhorns.. great to see crushed egos and puke!! :lol3:

Seabrook.. I'm starting to like that captain.. the more camera time he has the more knowledge he shows me.. and I like that!

BIll BIll BILL..  put the cockly kid in the galley and make him be the cook.. if that doesnt  knock hom down a few nothes then kick his :ass: off your boat!! he destroyed  property  on your boat and disrespected you by giving you the finger!!  you shoulda given him :boot:

Tonight's show will be interesting, will Jake show signs of smoking pot? The captain goes hunting for evidence, last shot across the bow.

That sub captian of the CM should not have called the cops on jake no matter what!  That was done merely for air time I believe. to make a name for himself. as a grown man.. you dont turn the kid into the cops but you do suspend him from getting back on the boat only  IF YOU HAVE A JOB the next season!  :ascared That captian was upset because they all pulled the rug out from underneath him. the crew didnt want to work with him again after not finding  the crab. HE WAS/IS BITTER!

Yes jake :smoke  if that was your  home  made pipe.. you shoulda tossed it when u were done with it! you can always make another ! :lol3:

I wonder what the other captians will think of the departing CM captain  :duno:

Surprise! I disagree about calling the police.   :)

Jake was filmed being accused of smoking pot and probably filmed SMOKING the pot if we only knew... I think Captain Ray had no choice but to act. Apparently Jake had promised to take a drug test in the morning before they docked and skipped out on his promise. I give him credit for one thing. No one can prove for sure that he did or didn't use drugs on the boat but there is always the chance that the other members of the crew will talk or Discovery show film we haven't seen before. There is no doubt in my mind that the other crew members know what happened. Derrick could have lost his license, if he had not reported it; he would be considered an accomplice or aiding and abetting.

I always thought Jake would be the one to take over the boat because he was the better deckhand but now I just feel disappointed in him. He's let his father down. He let his crew down, he let his brother down and he let the boat owner and the boat it down. It's obvious the boat needs a lot of work.

Captain Ray was an old friend of Phil's and he came out of retirement to finish the season when Phil had his stroke.

We only saw the most dramatic part of the problems on the boat. What did we not see?

I agree somewhat TL! I just think making a big stink over something you dont have definative proof over is "overboard" :lol3: (pun)

I hope they do show us some of the behind the scenes when this is all over to fil in those gaps!! I do believe there must have been way more drama then what we got to see.

I do agree that he was worried about his license but he can always do a :pee: test to prove he's clean as well. no one would have questioned it.  I think he thought he was helping with his intervention but it just Mutinied(is that a word? ) the crew!

here's to next weeks :keeta:

It was nice to see more of the guys on this episode. it was the begining of Opie season. and yes the CM did sail!  I think they all needed that reality check. and Im glad to see as a whole more of the activities

Its definately makes for good TV when Sig's brother  decides NOT to return for the season and to spend it with his family. Good for him.. Now the others have to pick up the slack.. I know no one can do what Edgar did but many people working together should be able to get the job done. :keeta:

Im hoping for a great opie season but as we already saw  Mother nature has a bone to pick with the  bering Sea. I wonder how much damge the boats are gonna have when she's finally settle the bet! :ugot

Time bandit and seabroke   played a great prank/ retaliation on each other! marking ones boat (time bandit's) to egging  the seabrook.  it made for a fun  episode! :lol3:

I had a phone call and missed the buying of $200.00 worth of eggs. LOL I thought they were throwing snowballs until I saw the egg yolks running down the side of the windows and on the walls, it was a really good retaliation.  :lol3:

I also thought it was interesting after all of Jake's protests that he was clean that the new captain laid down the law about his drug use and Josh seemed to realize that his brother does have a problem and he needed to get cleaned up. Vindication for Captain Derrick.

The other Jake seems like he is going to grow into his new responsibilities and do OK. He has aged so much in the few years he's been crabbing, he's what 30? It was so sad to see Edgar on the dock as the Northwestern sailed out to sea.

Wasn't it interesting that Freddie left the CM to go on the Wizard? He said he hadn't made much money in the past 5 years and we know the blue crab season was a disaster. He's on a better ship for sure.

OMG can you say OUCH!!! Uncle frank of the NorthWestern gets hit in the face with that hook! OMG!!  that thing was sooo broken. not for the squeamish!

I cant belive that there is so limited footage of the CM.. and thier crab count is 3 to last place.

the rookie captains of the show from the rambling rose and seabrook  arent doing much for me on camera.. I cant seem to get in touch with either of them. the rambling rose captain comes of cocky and the seabrook captain appears to have the knowledge to run a boat but why is there no production?

So after the waiting out of the storm the Wizard and Freddy former deckhand of the CM makes a killing with his Cod blood drinking ritual.. Keith says  "we have to do it on every trip now! "

I wonder will this season come up blanks like the Rambling rose's  crab totals?? a BIG ZERO!

 i hope not!

I LOVE this show! Raw drama, men doing their best or worst and the captains that run the ships!

Thanks for the preview Ugot!  :hrt:
