'The Amazing Race: China' gets renewed for a second season

(5 October 2010 11:30 am)

MUMBAI: Disney Media Distribution announced at Mipcom that Shanghai Media Group (SMG) renewed its agreement to produce a second season of The Amazing Race: China Rush next year.

The first season aired on SMG’s International Channel Shanghai (ICS) network and did well, especially among college educated male audiences.

ICS executive director Sun Wei said, "The Amazing Race: China Rush is not only a successful show for the target audience, but also a mutually benefiting cooperative model. We look forward to a continuous collaboration with international media companies such as Disney."

The Amazing Race brand continues to expand across Asia Pacific with the August announcement of an agreement with Channel Seven Australia to produce a localised version of the show. Australia joins China as well as other countries and regions including Brazil, Israel, and pan-Asia and Latin America in producing a localised version of the worldwide smash hit reality competition show.

“The Amazing Race Asia” made its fourth season debut on 23 September across the Asia Pacific on AXN. Fans logged on to the AXN Asia website for a sneak peek of the first episode streamed online one whole week before its on-air premiere. Over 10,000 views were recorded for the online streaming.

Disney Media Distribution Asia Pacific VP programme distribution Amit Malhotra said, “Audiences in Asia have shown an enormous appetite for high-quality, locally produced shows in recent years. The growth of ‘The Amazing Race’ franchise is a great example of bringing Disney’s expertise to work successfully with our local partners’ experience and capabilities to produce world-class versions of one of the most universally popular game shows ever in this region,” said ,

The show is currently in its 17th season in the US. Bertram van Munster who is the executive producer and co-creator of the show said, “ The show’s universal appeal is centered on the potent concoction of surprises, excitement, drama and intensity it delivers at a lightning pace to audiences. The US version of ‘The Amazing Race,’ in addition to the localized Asia versions, has had a huge following in this part of the world. I look forward to the upcoming Australian version and the next season in China, both of which are sure to capture the spirit and vitality of these two great nations.”
