Eric and Lisa
Biography
Eric Paskel (41); Lisa Paskel (43)
Hometown: Encino, Calif. via Michigan
Occupation: Yoga Studio Owners and Instructors
Relationship: Married Yoga Teachers

Eric and Lisa have been married for over 18 years.  Both are vegans who have a passionate and fiery approach to their personal and professional lives and are extremely dedicated to helping others.

Eric and Lisa own four yoga studios and both serve as instructors.  In addition to running their business, they teach classes and workshops where they deal with issues such as family crisis and addiction.  Lisa describes what she does as, "helping people connect to their supreme self."

Lisa claims that Eric is much more easy-going, carefree and trusting of others while she has the ability to see people for what they really are — an ability that will undoubtedly come in handy on the Race.

Neither Eric nor Lisa are afraid to challenge one another to be the best people they can be and no matter the challenge at hand, both are open to working together to find a solution.  They hope that their experience on the Race will further solidify a marriage that they consider a true blessing.

They reside in Encino, Calif., and have two daughters

These two are yet another pre-race favorite! I hope to see all the stuff they promised in their video interview!

How does a team "look" boring? and I really wish the racers threads wouldn't turn into a prediction game  :waves:

Sorry puddin, i normally like to give a first hand prediction of the team pre-season in their profiles and i've always been doing it this way all along. It's just a little fun prediction based on what i read and see from a particular team and a thought/vibe i get coming from this team. And this team "look" boring because of their pictures.. they look like they are stoned or forced to take photos. For me, photographs taken can say alot about a person personality/character and this is what i get from them.

Of course, i can be wrong too. And that is when i come back to this thread to take back my words/feelings on this team and see the changes that i've made/felt for this team pre and after season. :D

I am eager to see more of them! I loved their energy and excitement and plans in the video, and think the focus and discipline they must have to do intense yoga and overcome addiction would be a big asset in the race!  They are also gorgeous and I love their relationship vibe. :hearts:

I kind of like them for now, they seem pretty nice. And I'm actually getting a Ken and Tina vibe from them, not in the placing sense, but personality-wise. Just my opinion.

MSU Alumnus travels world for 15th season of 'The Amazing Race'
By Cole Bertsos
(Last updated: 55 minutes ago)

For Eric Paskel, life is about seizing the moment. Lucky for him, he didn’t expect just how amazing the moment could be.

Eric Paskel, an MSU alumnus, and his wife Lisa Paskel, will be featured on the upcoming 15th season of reality show “The Amazing Race,” which begins airing Sept. 27 on CBS, after a client passed their name along to those in charge of casting for the show.

“It was just like, ‘OK, here’s this great opportunity to be together, do this really crazy stuff, see the world and let people see who we are and how we work,’” Lisa Paskel said. “It was exciting, it was a challenge — I love a challenge.”

For those unfamiliar, “The Amazing Race” follows between 10 and 12 teams made up of pairs of people with pre-existing relationships such as family members, friends and co-workers.

Although the challengers have to not only complete the race itself, they’re also required to make it to several checkpoints, while competing against the other teams and the clock to complete their tasks the fastest. The goal is to finish first, winning $1 million.

“It’s funny because the show came to us, we didn’t come to them,” Eric Paskel said. “It’s not something that would have popped up on my radar.”

The pair, who were suggested to the casting crew by a client, said they were never very familiar with the show before becoming involved with it.

“The reason why I knew about the show was because when I watched football on CBS every once and a while I would see these crazy promos for this show where people were doing some pretty wild stuff,” Eric Paskel said. “So when I saw the name, I recognized it.”

Although the show wasn’t an opportunity the couple sought out, the two jumped at the chance to have an adventure, and to spend some much needed quality time together.

“(It was) time with Eric that was long overdue,” Lisa Paskel said.

In addition to being a unique experience for the pair, MSU students will be able to see a fellow Spartan run the race.

“(They’re) close to home and you’re connected with them in some way,” said Anne Bailey, a prenursing sophomore. “You can brag about your school a little bit.”

The couple, who owns four yoga studios called Yoga Shelter located in Birmingham, Royal Oak, West Bloomfield and Grosse Pointe, currently lives in California.

Lisa Paskel said with all the retreats and trips they go on with clients and other people, the time together was something they were very much looking forward to.

“We rarely get to travel without a slew of people,” Lisa Paskel said.

Though the spot on the exciting, adventure-filled show was unexpected, sometimes you just have to say “yes” when this sort of thing comes your way, Eric Paskel said.

“Life is to be lived,” Eric Paskel said. “You only die once.”

Amazing Race's Eric and Lisa: Quickie Elimination Was "No Big Deal"

    * Sep 28, 2009 05:00 PM ET
    * by Joyce Eng

Eric Paskel and Lisa Paskel

Married yoga teachers Eric, 41, and Lisa Paskel, 43, have the dubious distinction of being the first team ever to get eliminated on The Amazing Race before it even began, coming up short on a needle-in-the-haystack, license-plate-finding task. "It just felt so strange because that's not what we signed on for, but it worked out for the best," Lisa tells TVGuide.com. How so? The pair subsequently went on their own "amazing adventure" and may soon be back on our TV screens with a new reality show. See what else they have to say about their short-lived stint on the series.

TVGuide.com: Your elimination was good TV, but it was unnecessarily mean. Did you have any inkling something like that would happen since there were 12 teams and they usually have 11?
Eric: I realized in one of the seasons, there were 10 teams, in all the other ones there were 11, and I think there was one other with 12, so I knew someone was going fast. I said it to Lisa as well. [I was taken aback when they told us a team would be eliminated] because I know how much time and effort we put in to be on the show and I realized that for a lot of the other contestants, this was very big for them. My heart went out to everyone because 1) I thought it would never be us in a million years and 2) I knew if it was us, we'd be prepared for it and we'd be OK. We'll move on to the next thing.

TVGuide.com: Did you feel like you deserved to travel somewhere?
Eric: Yeah, but any time you're on a show that involves elimination and drama and you need to sell that, there are always going to be twists and turns. The show, they definitely took a risk with that because they had no idea who they were going to eliminate. They probably thought, "Mostly likely it will be these guys," and we'd like to think they felt pretty bad too because they would've loved to have us on.
Lisa: We've gotten thousands of e-mails and Facebook [messages] in the last 24 hours of people just saying how we taught them so much, how to skin their knees and get back up with dignity.

TVGuide.com: You guys were really calm there.
Eric: We wake up every day and we prepare ourselves through study and yoga practices to face whatever the world is going to be like out there that day. We woke up that day, prepared ourselves and got on that bus for the Race. As big a deal as this seemed to so many people, it was no big deal for us because we have what matters. Our life is full of such wonder and goodness that it would really be disrespectful to the people we love, to the things we have, to the experiences we've been through to be caught up in not getting a freakin' license plate.
Lisa: Our bus ride was longer than our time [on the Race]! We were also standing in a very impoverished area of Los Angeles and I was thinking, "We lost the Race, but there are kids up the street right now that don't have food on the table." We live a charmed life. I came home to my beautiful children and I left with the man I love.
Eric: We were also the first team to ever leave the show too. We didn't go to Elimination Station [where eliminated teams are sequestered for the duration of production]. We took off and went to India.

TVGuide.com: You left voluntarily?
Eric: Afterward, we said, "Listen, you guys threw this at us and honestly, I don't know what else you have in store, but no, thank you. We're 20 minutes from our house and we had plans this summer, which was to go to spend time with our teacher in India." So we went there. We're not into spending three weeks somewhere and not knowing what it would be like. We had no trust that it was something that would be good for us and good for our reputation, so we took off and we wound up having the most wonderful time that we could possibly have
.

TVGuide.com: What happened with the license plates? The way they edited it, it seemed like you guys, and Lance and Keri figured out the symbol at the same time.
Lisa: Eric was the only person aside from Justin that actually saw the clue on the paper. Everybody else grabbed the license plate by luck. [Keri] saw Eric show me the clue, and that's how they saw it. They made [the clue] look so bright and bold on TV, but it was just a little bit embossed and very teeny on the paper, so it was hard to see, but ultimately Eric did see it. It didn't matter anyway since everyone grabbed them by luck. In fact, they didn't show this, but we got into a tug-a-war over a license plate with the country-singing Christian couple [Mika and Canaan], and they got the plate. He pulled it out of my hand. It is what it is.

TVGuide.com: You know who wins, but do you have a favorite?
Lisa: We don't know who wins. We didn't go.

TVGuide.com: You didn't come back for the finale? Did you stay in India?
Lisa: Yeah. We just said bye-bye. But they're all great. I hope they all win.

TVGuide.com: What's next for you guys?
Eric: We're just finishing up a contract with Leftfield Pictures that is going to be producing a pilot for us called The Ordinary Gurus. It's going to be a day in the life of the Paskel family. We have four yoga studios and a fifth that will be opening in Studio City, and dozens and dozens of teachers, employees. It will be Intervention meets Work Out meets The Osbournes. ... We have an infomercial that I'm shooting in November for a DVD series I have out called Explosion.
Lisa: In the meantime, we run teaching and training. We're leaving for Michigan where we have 80 people we've been working with for the past month. We've been nonstop since then. We showed up to do the best we can on the show. Sometimes the best doesn't look how we want it to look, but it's just another experience. It's not the core meaning of life, but it's great entertainment, right?

The most ridiculous twist ever, pointless and heartbreaking, not just for Lisa and ERic but for the fans. I knew it was coming but seeing how it played out really tears at your heart.  :(

The saddest thing is that probably 90% of their airtime will be just their intro scene.

I say CBS should give them a second chance.

I loved how they went their own way instead of some stupid elimination station. CBS is just plain dumb. Good for TV, but it sucks big time for us fans to know that people who really wanted to race was thrown off 5 mins into the show. Lame lame lame.

Starting and Stopping with Amazing Race 15 Eliminees Eric and Lisa Paskel
by Reg Seeton

The Amazing Race 15 kicked off a new season of around the world globetrotting as 12 new teams met in Los Angeles to begin the race. However, before Amazing Race host, Phil Keoghan, gave the "go" to begin season 15, a new twist was revealed when Phil told the new Amazing Race teams one pair would be eliminated on the spot if they were the last team to select a Japanese license plate from the board in front of them.

When the race began, all 12 teams battled it out in the famous aqueducts of L.A. in a competitive first challenge to find the license plate and match up a symbol that would jet them off to Tokyo for the first leg of The Amazing Race 15. At the end of the first elimination challenge, married yoga teachers Eric and Lisa Paskel were eliminated from The Amazing Race before the heat of the race even began, becoming the first Amazing Race team ever to leave the race from the starting line.

The following morning we caught up with abruptly eliminated Amazing Race competitors, Eric and Lisa, for an exclusive chat to find out how they felt about being eliminated from The Amazing Race so early, how they handled the extreme swing of emotions, how their yoga helped them accept defeat so early, and what's in store for the future of Eric and Lisa post Amazing Race.

THE DEADBOLT: So what was going through your mind when you heard the twist about being eliminated?

LISA PAKEL: Some poor bastard is going to eat a sh*t sandwich in about two minutes.

ERIC PASKEL: Yeah. "I wonder who's going to take it," you know? It was surprising to hear because - The show has been around long enough to know that the contestants have to really make a lot of arrangements to make it work in their life. For some people I think this might be the biggest thing that ever happens to them, like this is the highlight in their life that they were on a TV show. Thank God for us that was not the case and my head just went to, "Man, I feel so bad for somebody; they're not going to be prepared for this and they're not even going to get a chance to get a taste of what this is like ...

LISA: What they signed on for.

ERIC: ... never thinking that it would be us. But also knowing that if it was us, it was not really going to be that big of a deal. The big deal is that we're competitive people. So whether it's titley winks, checkers, or The Amazing Race, especially with all of those viewers watching, it's a little bit humbling to get licked like that. But that's all it was, it was just a licking. I've lost a million hockey games, tennis matches, basketball games, you name it, baseball games, that's all it is. It stings for a minute and you move on, that's it. That's what happened and you move on.

THE DEADBOLT: What did you guys think when you were watching the episode?

LISA: I thought they should've given us more air time. We had something to say and they spent a lot of time wanting us to say stuff and they just moved past us really fast. So I didn't really enjoy that.

ERIC: I mean, we were more disappointed than losing the race that way. They spent a lot of time interviewing us because it was the first time. We were like guinea pigs for them and I think we gave them good TV. And they asked us a whole bunch of questions, like you're asking and others have, and they gave us an opportunity to say some things. All we got to see was basically a line from me and a line from Lisa and that was kind of disappointing.

THE DEADBOLT: So when you accepted that you wouldn't be on the race, what did you guys actually take away from the experience?

LISA: Well, I got to walk away with my partner, and I got to walk away knowing that all of the work that Eric and I do in our daily life to prepare for life really paid off. And that, as he said earlier to someone, we're not full of sh*t, we walk our talk. You know, we spend a lot of time every day getting up and studying and having a physical yoga practice and working with people. And when push came to shove in a really uncomfortable stinky moment, the two of us held our heads up and stood together and kept things in perspective.

ERIC: You know, how you ask yourself, "what if you were held up at gunpoint?" and "what if you lost one of your family members suddenly" and "what if you were on The Amazing Race and there was 10.1 million viewers watching and you get your ass kicked in three minutes, how would you do?" You know, how would you react? You always ask yourself the "what if" and you never really know the answers until you experience them. I was very proud of Lisa and I because the very first thought of when it happened, for me, was, "What's for lunch?" I mean, that was really it. It stung for a minute. But it was more painful to have to be interviewed and not just be able to go, "All right, let's go home." But that was it. And that really left me with a wonderful taste in my mouth about the guy that I am and the work that we both did, and that's the real take away. That and a backpack that I'll probably never use, a grey handkerchief that I burned, and some other odds and ends.

LISA: It was a great feeling to know that we had the ability to turn around and say, "no, thank you" to going to the sequester house. We took off and went to India and studied with our guru for that month and were just able to have an amazing summer regardless and we're rooting for everybody in the situation. You know, it sucks that it wasn't us. I personally wanted to run that race once my competitive nature kicked in. I kind of got geared up for it. But on to the next adventure and I hope it works out great for everybody.

THE DEADBOLT: So how do you think the yoga helped you in dealing with the emotions of it.

ERIC: Well, it kept us out of prison, because otherwise ...

LISA: [laughs] It's the truth.

ERIC: I literally would've went homicidal on everybody.

LISA: Which I'm sure you'll see other teams do because people aren't equipped to take that kind of beating. You know, if Eric and I didn't have the practices and the life experiences that we've had, and we've been through so much in our lives, I really think I might have gone off on somebody.

ERIC: Yoga helps you put a value on things in life. The teachings help you realize what's really important and what's not. If you get that backward, you're subject to a lot of stress and strain in life. Most people think their job, their income, their things are real important, and they get stressed and strained over keeping those up and building them. You know, everybody on that show thought winning the race was most important. For Lisa and I, what was most important that day was to remember we're there to be the best human beings we can be, to love each other and to represent our community. That's what was most important. So whether we got it or we didn't, we feel like we did that, and that was it. That's why you didn't see us freaking out. I couldn't have come up with that, I'm not that bright. In fact I'm quite ignorant, as you can see, otherwise we probably would've grabbed the license plate.

THE DEADBOLT: Well, you guys probably would've kicked ass in the duck challenge.

ERIC: We would've loved to have done it.

LISA: We were open for any experiences coming. I think the show was really - Actually, it's been said to us over and over by different producers and people on the show that they were really bummed out to see us go, that they had really planned to do a lot of stories around us. So they'll just have to stay tuned for our own show when it comes out.

THE DEADBOLT: How to you think you would've faired in the wasabi challenge?

LISA: Well, it would've been great, because I would've rigged the roulette table and we would've only gotten a wasabi roll.

ERIC: Yeah, and we're vegan. We don't eat fish. But yeah, that kind of stuff, those kinds of things, especially with the yoga practice, we really do well with being able to kind of remove ourselves mentally and emotionally from something and just thrust our body into action.

LISA: [laughs] It would've been a very hot challenge.

ERIC: I would've breathed fire, man, after that wasabi. But it would've went down. It would've went down fast and would've went down easy with a smile that's for sure.

THE DEADBOLT: Eric, I saw a Native American tattoo on your arm. Can you explain who it is and the significance?

ERIC: Yeah, this guy really interests me. His name is Chief Big Bow and he was a Kiowa Indian and they were the last tribe to be captured. They were mid-westerners and they were traveling the plains and they were given a certain amount of time, a few days, a few weeks, or whatever to get to a camp and surrender. And what he did was: He planned a mass suicide because he didn't want to live any other way in his life other than his ways, his tribe's ways, his philosophy, his beliefs. I had been such a whore in my life where I would've sold my dignity for a tofu sandwich. When I saw this guy, I wanted to put him on my arm and keep him close to my heart to remember not to sell myself short and not to sell out. What's interesting is that if we would've continued on this race, I think in so many ways we would've had to in order to go for the bigger picture. So getting off of the race so soon really took us out of having to make some of those decisions.

I really wanted to get to know them better, but I'm also grateful that they were the ones kicked off at this stage...because sadly, it's true: they may have been the only team capable of dealing with it well.

Still miss them very much. :(

I have to say...while I agree they've been VERY classy in their approach and handling of the situation, ehhh.....I mean, never watched TAR once?! Not one ep??  And yet, I've always wanted to go on the show and seen every ep since being a 10th grader in high school! (and I'm adult-aged now) I can't feel too sorry for them!

Now if it was the Amazing Yoga Class? Then yeah, my heart would break a little more. I still really like their attitude and outlook on life, and it's interesing to think the Poker chicks or Globetrotters (getting a little annoyed with the constant theme music!) could've been Philiminated first!!  :ascared (assuming no producer shenanigans)
