An interesting article:  :res:

'Big Brother' coming to Tampa seeking narcissists

To some, it may sound like the eighth circle of Hell.

But if you're attracted to the idea of living for 100 days under 24-hour observation on national TV in a makeshift house on a studio lot with a handful of other attention-seeking nobodies, CBS has got a proposition for you.

Producers of the network's unscripted competition Big Brother are coming to town, casting for the show's 11th (?!) cycle beginning noon Saturday at Beef O'Brady's, 10029 W Hillsborough Avenue, Tampa.

Sarasota native and Big Brother 9 alum "Crazy James" Zinkand is an attention hog, previously known for videotaping a friend who jumped off the roof of a Sarasota resort into the pool and missed.

His audition advice, delivered by e-mail Monday: "They totally need stories. That is what you do mainly in the house is tell your past and what you want to do in your future. … Be proud of who you are. Wether (sic) it be the whitest redneck to grace this earth or the most flamboyant Drag Queen, tell them your issues and your struggles but tell them how you can overcome them all."

The local stop falls midway through a 25-city casting tour, ranging from New York City to Flowood, Miss. (I don't know where it is, either).

CBS officials suggest you bring ID — you need to prove you're over age 21 and a U.S. citizen — and be prepared to tell a camera why you should be on the show. Eventually, 40 finalists will be flown to Los Angeles for a week of auditions, where aspiring contestants prove they can handle repeated questioning from Big Brother's wooden host, animatronic Early Show newsreader Julie Chen.

The winner gets $500,000, two runnersup also get cash, and everybody else gets a stipend that Entertainment Weekly recently reported was about $750 a week. Not bad pay for lounging around a prefab home and starting fights with some of the biggest narcissists on the planet.

ig Brother' in Big Country

Michael Tomlin already has a taste of Hollywood, and now he wants more.

The 21-year-old college student from The Colony was in Abilene on Thursday for a casting call for the 11th season of the CBS reality show "Big Brother."

"My life is a reality show," Tomlin said.

Thursday's casting call at The Mall of Abilene was one of only two in Texas (the other was in Austin) for this summer's production of "Big Brother," which follows a group of strangers living together in a house outfitted with dozens of cameras and microphones. Their every move is recorded 24/7. One by one the house guests will vote each other out until at the end of three months, the last remaining person will win $500,000.

"That would pay for medical school," said Tomlin, a junior at Texas Tech University.

"Big Brother" is shown locally on KTAB-TV. Saundra Carriker, local sales manager at KTAB, said Abilene's CBS station chose to conduct the casting call as a promotional event for the station, the city and the mall, which was a co-sponsor for Thursday's auditions.

In addition to Tomlin, early Thursday afternoon there were applicants from Abilene, Baird, San Angelo, Tulsa, Okla., and Dyess Air Force Base.

"It's a promotional event we chose to participate in with CBS," Carriker said. "We're glad we got to do it. It's kind of fun. It's a positive, upbeat event. Everyone is having fun, and it brings people together."

Applicants completed an extensive information form and recorded a two-minute video, telling producers of "Big Brother" why he or she should be selected.

Tomlin, a transfer from Trinity University, is a health exercise and sports science major at Tech. He played football three seasons for the Tigers, and he was involved in the "Mississippi Miracle," a 15-lateral play Oct. 27, 2007, that gave the team the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship.

It was the play that attracted Tomlin to Hollywood. It was nominated for an ESPY award, and Tomlin and other players and coaches were on hand for the award program presented by ESPN.

A friend told him about Thursday's casting call in Abilene, so he stopped in Abilene on his drive home from Lubbock to The Colony for Easter weekend.

"I think I've watched every episode of the show," he said. "I've always wanted to be on it, but I never thought I would get a chance. It would be fun to be on the show with everyone. And I love L.A. It would beat working this summer.

Carriker and her staff will assemble Thursday's videos and applications to send to CBS. Carriker said people have until May 4 to send applications and introduction videos to CBS (by mail or online on the CBS Web site).

'Big Brother' Auditions Draw 100s
One Potential Cast Member Emphasizes 'Drama' He Would Bring

PHOENIX -- Hundreds of budding television stars lined up inside Dos Gringos Mexigrill in Chandler, hoping to be part of the cast for the 11th season of the CBS reality show Big Brother.

All the cast members had different reason why he or she should land a spot on the show.

"Well, I have the personality; I'm pretty fun; I like to have a good time," said one person. "Stuck in a house with a bunch of people -- why not? I'm a people person."

Another man emphasized the potential conflicts he could create.

"I think I will bring an immense amount of drama," he said. "More drama than CBS or this show has ever seen."

The open casting call ran from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Reality TV finding stars in Chandler

Ryan Linford knows someone who knows someone who’s on a reality TV show. The Chandler information technology specialist has no interest in exposure, or even in watching people he knows on the relatively unscripted dramas.

“I’d rather watch a real show,” he said.

However, for Linford and many others living and working in Chandler, the degrees of separation between regular folks and temporarily famous reality television stars are shrinking fast.

Aspiring entertainers no longer must transport themselves to the California coast. They now audition for national shows across America, hours or minutes from home.

Chandler is increasingly among the cities serving as Hollywood’s understudy.

On Saturday, the CBS reality show “Big Brother” held one of its 11 open casting calls in Chandler.

The cable network, TV Land, made Chandler High School’s graduating class of 1988 the subject of its reality series, “High School Reunion.”

A few years ago, when NBC resurrected the obstacle course extravaganza “American Gladiator,” recruiters searched out potential spandex warriors in the city known more for computer chips than fitness.

Linford and his wife, Erin, are friends with a Chandler High alum whose classmates were on “Reunion.”

“It’s really funny to see these people he went to high school with all on TV,” said Erin Linford.

But what makes Chandler — a Phoenix suburb, less hip than Tempe and less glitzy than Scottsdale — a veritable hotbed for reality stars?

“That’s a very good question,” said Shawn Mitchell, chief executive at HNE Casting in Los Angeles, which specializes in booking reality shows.

Mitchell has seen Chandler listed on a number of casting calls but said he isn’t sure what draws reality show producers to the East Valley.

People-watching at Chandler Fashion Center on Friday, Paul Rossi speculated that the passers-by might be luring casting agents.

“Definitely, they’re good looking,” Rossi said.

Chandler, more than other Valley cities, is a desirable locale to find cast members, he said. “Scottsdale is full of posers.”

But sorry, Chandlerites. Reality shows are not specifically looking for you and your neighbors.

The arrival of “Big Brother” in Chandler was a coincidence.

Carly Ullinskey, casting producer for the CBS show, said she needed a good venue to house hundreds of potential television personalities. As an Arizona native, Ullinskey knew the managers at Dos Gringos, a local chain of Mexican cantinas, and arranged to use their Chandler restaurant.

“It’s not necessarily a city or a type of people, because people might even come in from Colorado for this open call,” Ullinskey said. Some drive nine hours to audition.

Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix have all also hosted auditions for a slew of programs, including NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” Fox’s “American Idol” and MTV’s “The Real World.”

Valley residents have repeatedly made their way onto reality show casts since the genre came to dominate prime time a decade ago.

That likely has much to do with the Valley’s rocketing population growth. The resulting buzz of new residents has given Phoenix and its surrounding cities a higher profile nationally, Ullinskey said, which puts it on casting agents’ list of places to visit.

“We don’t want an entire show of everyone from one city,” she said. “We want to get the entire United States represented in the show.”

Without a hometown advantage, Chandler residents need to find other ways to boost their reality show appeal. “Big Brother” hopefuls must complete a 13-page questionnaire more resembling an FBI background check than a job application.

Producers want all the basic information — name, gender, Facebook address.

Then they delve deeper.

Do you get along with your Mom? When was the last time you faced aggravated assault charges? What’s your swimsuit size?

And there is the standard inquiry: “Are there any nude or other revealing or compromising images of you that are available publicly either through the Internet, video or otherwise?”

Personality and individuals’ world view are what count most for reality shows, Mitchell said.

“A lot of the time they’re looking to mix it up instead of just big city folks all the time,” he said. “They want diversity between small-town people, with different outlooks on life.”

Which is, of course, why the application asks for swimsuit size.

Robyn Kass, Casting Director Interview

Want to be on Big Brother?  Ever wonder who picks those house guests?  What does the casting director look for?

Our interviewer, Yana,  took  theses questions, and many more,  to Robyn Kass,  the casting director for Big Brother.  Casting for Big Brother 11 began during the final week of Big Brother 10 and is still going strong.  With applications and video tape submissions being due by May 4, 2009 . Applicants chosen to be a finalist will go to Los Angeles, CA from which applicants will be narrowed down to a pool of forty finalists.  The first open casting call for the season will be held in Lansing, Michigan by local CBS affiliate WLNS-TV on April 1, 2009.  Various open casting calls will be conducted across the nation including Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, Waverly, IA, and Columbus, OH.

Robyn: Hi fans!  Thank you so much for watching BB and for all these questions!   Please understand, there are some things I can’t answer because of confidentiality and my contract, but I’ll answer as much as I can!

Cajunboiler: What is the most ridiculous casting video that you have ever seen?

Robyn: Wow, there have so many throughout the years I don’t think I can pick just one!  I’ve seen a lot of drunk videos, a lot of naked videos, a lot of great parody videos…. They’re all pretty entertaining!

Has any contestant acted completely opposite on the show than they did in their casting videos?

Robyn: We get a pretty good gage of how people are going to act in the house during casting, but sure, there are always surprises!

TVRocks17: What's the craziest idea for a season or twist that has ever came up over the past 10-11 years?

Robyn: As much as I’d love to discuss twists, under contract I can’t- sorry.

What has been your favorite season?

Robyn: That’s a tough question.  I definitely have favorite moments in every season, but it’s a little like “Sophie’s Choice” I can’t choose just one overall season as a favorite. J

If you were offered the chance to play the game. Would you do it and if so what would would be your strategy?

Robyn: HA!  Great question.  Wow, I don’t know. I know how difficult the house is and I’m not sure I could make it to the end.  Maybe I would on a smaller scale…. Ie- shorter time frame.  Could I cast who would be in the house with me???  J  If so, then YES!  As for strategy, I would go in with a very lose strategy, but I’d have to adapt to the situation as the game plays out.  I always tell people, you can never forget you’re playing a game from the second you enter to the second you leave.

If someone was trying to get on the show which would be the best way by sending in a videotape/application or just going to an open casting call?

Robyn: Well, it really doesn’t matter.  Believe it or not, we do watch every single tape that comes in- EVERY ONE!  That being said, sometimes people are more natural at an open call OR they might be more nervous, so there are pros and cons to both.

Do you have a favorite moment from a past season?

Robyn: I have many.  Probably the same moments as all viewers….

Season 2- Classic BB moment – Shannon cleaning the toilet with Hardy’s toothbrush.

Season 3-  Watching Danielle (freezing)  and Lisa in the pool at the end of the game. Of course Marcellas turning down the golden veto will go down in history.

Season 4- The moment the EXs walked in the house.

Season 5 - The twin reveal!  And the look on Cowboy’s face when he realized Nakomis was his sister!

Season 6 – The moment Kaysar revealed to Maggie he figured out the twist and was gunning to get Eric out.

Season 7- The moment Erika and Janelle realized they were both being lied to by Chilltown. On the flip side, I loved watching Mike and Will lie to everyone in the pantry.

Season 8- I loved watching all of the America’s Player challenges play out- ie: Eric getting in bed with Joe!  Also, nothing beats Jen crying over her wall picture- priceless moment!

Season 9- The very first challenge of season 9 was one of my favorites…. Where they had to hang upside down holding onto their partners. Also loved when Natalie miscounted the amount of letters in the alphabet “  Y and Z”!

Season 10-  Between Jesse and Renny… I have a million favorite season 10 moments!

See, I truly am a fan!

Do you still speak too any past HGs?

Robyn: Absolutely!  I consider all of them friends of mine.  I speak to some more regularly than others, but when they come to town they’ll usually call me and try to hook up for a bite to eat.

uvp: When is the premiere of BB11?

Robyn: I don’t have the exact date yet.

These are just general questions from Yana, just things I thought people might like to know.

When doing casting calls or reviewing an audition tape, what is the things you look for that you know will make a good game player, and a good TV Character?

Robyn: I’m sure you’ve heard this a lot… I look for the “it” quality.  Someone who just pops…. Someone memorable, it could be the way they talk or laugh or the way they tell stories, maybe it’s their interesting background.  There’s no one thing I look for, but if I can’t remember a specific person 3 days later that probably means they didn’t leave a lasting, unique impression on me.  As far as game play, I just want people in the house who love the game. Of course it helps if they’re fans of the show, but we’ve had great game players who have never seen the show, but most of all we want people who want to get to the end and win.

There are so many fan sites around, and many of them have asked to have a fan sites edition, where you could cast a person or a few people from each of the most popular sites and let them play the game, have you ever considered this option for a twist?

Robyn: Nope, this has never come up.  We do cast a lot of hardcore fans of BB on the show.  I wouldn’t cast someone specifically from any fan websites.

Will there be an All Stars 2?

Robyn: I have no idea….

Do you like working with Alison?

Robyn: Allison is fantastic!  We’ve definitely been through “the trenches” together many, many years!  If we didn’t get along, it would never work.

How much longer do you see the show being on the air, as you can pretty much guess, we here at Morty's LOVE the show, and a lot of us wouldn't want the show to ever end, but that's not realistic, the show has been on for 11 years this summer, and it seems to still be going strong, so do you think there will be at least 2 or three more years?

Robyn: Well, if you asked me this question during season 3 I probably would have never guessed it would continue to season 11!  I love casting the show, I love watching the show and I’ll stay on it as long as the network keeps it going!

Will there be another winter season, or was that just a season done because of the writers strike?

Robyn: I don’t make those decisions…. No idea.

My mom is 71 years old, my Sister in Law is in her 50's, I am 40 years old, my niece is in her 30's, and her daughters are in their teens, we are all fans of Big Brother.  Did you know that the show was so popular with so many age groups?

Love hearing stories like that!  Thanks!

We want to thank you for the interview and for casting the show. We have had many years of enjoyment, and wish many more.

I read somewhere that there are to be only 10 cast members this season.  Does anyone know if this is true?  It was posted in a blog, but nothing to back it up.   :duno:

I am begining to get curious on who the cast will be...... ???

BTW: Happy Spring everybody... :flowers:

Early Show's Julie Chen Expecting First Child

Newsflash: Julie Chen of CBS' The Early Show is pregnant.

On Tuesday's show, she announced that she and husband, CBS Corporation President and CEO Les Moonves, are expecting their first child together.

Rubbing her tummy, Chen, 39, joked, "So it wasn't a big Sunday at the buffet table. I'm starting to show now! And my due date is Oct. 4. So, fingers crossed."

She also said she won't be "taking maternity leave" from hosting CBS' reality show Big Brother.

Said Chen, "I e-mailed my boss over there this weekend and I said, 'Don't worry. I can still do the show!"' (She kidded that the headlines could read, "'Big Brother Gives Birth. Medical Miracle!'")

Chen wed Moonves, 59, on December 23, 2004.
