Maps, Maps, and more Maps!
« on: January 30, 2009, 09:15:48 PM »
:welcome3: to the MAPS for TAR 14!

As always, I'll be depending on everyone's help to make this a success, so please remember the Maps! as you research the race.

If you have Map or a Map tool that you think is great or have found useful--PLEASE add it here or let me know by PM and I will add it right into the correct spot so we can all use it!

As you post Maps or links to Maps in the threads, it is also VERY helpful if you could either give me a head's up here or by PM so I don't miss it, or just add a link to the post or the map itself here.
VR /Interactive links are appreciated too!

I'm really happy to be the librarian here but would like this to be a team effort--so please--send lots!

Thanks everybody!  :hugs:

Map store!

Please post your map finds in this thread, and they will be moved to the appropriate leg.

Please label each map clearly with where it is (name of the country, city, town, or park--for example).

Thanks everybody!

Need some ideas on how to find maps?
Here are some search ideas from Slowhatch:   :ty3:

    Perry-Castenada Collection and links page

    Odden's Bookmarks

    Google search with "location maps"

Others:

    Info Hub--maps

    Google Earth Explorer

    Google Maps

MAP source for Africa and Central America

COUNTRY facts --dialing codes, maps, time zones, etc  Thanks to Slowhatch!

Viagem Portuguese links to major cities Thanks to Slowhatch

Emporis Maps  "Emporis Maps is a map system. Instead of just searching for addresses Emporis Maps combines location-based information with building data from Emporis." Thanks to Slowhatch!

*** Wonderful MAP Link! *** Thanks to puddin, this interactive link has loads of info on each country, as well as easy, zoomable Google and GE maps. Try it! Worldmaps Infoseek

Since the MAP thread can become slow to load once it is full of MAPS!, I'm going to try having links to each section individually so you can click right on the Leg you want to see.

Not exactly maps, but VRs are fun to work with:
  • VR Brasov, with panos of the Black Church and Bran Castle and an interactive map of the city
  • VR Trans-Siberian Railway, with interior train shots and a good pano of Krasnoyarsk station

Neobie's map of Locarno to Verzasca is very good. To supplement it with a larger view of the canton of Ticino, see:

Ticino Canton Map

I found this while determining the distance from downtown Locarno to Verzasca Dam, which is no more than 10 km. A trip on a Sunday morning in November should not take more than 15 minutes.

I can't figure out where the "Gypsy" task took place. It's nearer to Brasov than the other option is, but where is it?

(Pit Stop and Bran Castle courtesy of Chateau. Romania's GE is a bitch.)

Neobie,
I can help you. The distance from the gypsy camp to the pit stop is probably about teh same distance as from Bran Castle (the Vampite Remains DETOUR) was to Vila Panoramic. That would be about 2 miles but I cannot tell you in what direction.

Gypsies are all over Transylvania. Tour guides can and do point out as you drive by in a bus many gypsy shacks that are close to other housing along the roads. Remember that this is a  fake gypsy village, so it will have been placed to facliitate teams getting to the pit stop after compleing the Gypsy Moves DETOUR. I say just put it on your map near Bran. Any direction except on an elevation will do.

Looking at Tammy/Victor's path, that must have taken at least a couple of hours to go that far off course. You think how far Linda strayed in Germany, it must have been something similar and Tammy & Victor went all uphill. Had Brad & Victoria stayed with the 9:30 p.m. pack in Munich, they could have easily eliminated the siblings while Tammy & Victor kept going off course.

I wonder if Phil would have had to walk into the woods to eliminate Tammy & Victor had Brad & Victoria not been stranded in Amsterdam.  :groan: :groan: :groan:

We're going to have to start our Questions for the Racers thread soon. One question I want answered, how far did Tammy & Victor walk and how long did it take before they finally turned around? Was it two, three or four hours? It was still daylight when they hit the mat in 8th.

Phuket. Got a four-month headstart on this one.

Interesting observations:
1. Everyone went to Patong at the beginning, and not just Mel/Mike.
2. The rickshaw temple was two minutes walk from the herbal shop.

A site with annotated maps and photos of Bangkok attractions and walking tours. I've been using it (and other sites) to try spotting the distinctive streetlamps at the taxi stand; no luck so far.

A detailed street map here; you can cross-reference with a street search engine here.

City8, which actually predated Google Streetview by about a year, provides streetview functions for Chinese cities (Guilin here, Beijing here). The trouble is, I haven't found an English interface yet.

Random fact of the leg: Teams in the karaoke taxi went around in a circle, back to the same temple. :duno:

Edushi makes some interesting interactive ortho maps of major Chinese cities (no English interface I could find). No Guilin, but here's a view of the Bird's Nest and Water Cube.

Teeny flaw (actually just covering my ass for the map labelling): what Tammy and Victor read as "Fuyong Lang" is actually "Furong Lang" (Hibiscus Court/Gallery) in Mandarin. They're of Taiwanese descent, so maybe that came from Minnanese roots?

The Calligraphy option brought teams about halfway to the Pit Stop - so they were at a bit of an advantage there.

Edited to fix: Phil's Banyan Lake is actually the one closer to the South Gate. The Pit Stop lake translates closer to Cedar or Fir.

Final instalment for this season, with thanks to Chateau, Slowhatch, and all the detectives! :jam:

It's been a great run. And congratulations to the Final 3, each clocking up to 26800 miles, or 43100km!
