This thread is for discussion of Episode 9.

Please read the posting guidelines HERE    BEFORE you post in this thread please.

Those who will have not seen the show yet will need to ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK! There will be spoilers about who won, and who was eliminated for sure, and other details about the leg.  You know by now, right?

This week's special THANK YOU's have to go to the team that helped us with the screencaps and updates last week! TARAfanatic did a great job with answering our questions about the show, and brought us some pictures and an early video! Snap-on really saved the day with the wonderful screen caps of the preview, and banzai brought us the preview itself!

Special detective kudos go to Boingo for finding the not only the location of Pune, but  the cricket stadium and the street intersection as well, and to banzai for the nice analysis of the tasks, and to Slowhatch for all the license tag info and to apskip for the flight data!

And a personal thank you to graytex and Shri for all their help in Pune. :ty3:

And ongoing especial thanks  to Calvin for his outstanding recaps that he produces with amazing speed! :thankyou:

Just a reminder:

Preview info for the NEXT leg should go in the general spoiler thread and NOT be discussed here.  :hugs:  And remember that the eliminated team should ONLY be discussed in this pinned episode thread until Sunday 10AM Singapore time= Sat 10PM  for those of us in the US (East Coast).

This is going to have to be short and sweet, guys! Due to work committments I haven't been able to help as much as I would like with the spoilers this week, so am going to give you a brief summary of what we have so far...

From Michael McKay:

Quote
Next week's episode is one of my favourites of the series. I do hope you like that one too.

Oddly enough, we seem to have NO AXN newsletter this week and NO Michael McKay intro...  :duno:

We then had  the First Screencaps from snap-on and the preview brought to us by banzai:

Teams leave Cochin for Pune:

Possibly by train? The drawback is that there is only one train a week on June 2--can Sam/Vince make it?

Or by plane: thanks to apskip:

Quote
How to get from Cochin to Pune. The options are one of 3 flight combinations through Mumbai each day and rail travel. Rail is easy because there is only one train each day at 1300 arriving Pune just after midnight at 0040. Flights require long connect time in Bombay except for the middle set:

AI691 COK BOM 0430 0615 connecting to 9W202 BOM PNQ 0955 1040

9W402 COK BOM 1300 1440 connecting to 9W101 BOM PNQ 1635 1710

9W404 COK BOM 1605 1745 connecting to Kingfisher Airlines IT3146 BOM PNQ 2215 2300

Banzai found this train info:
Quote
http://www.hotelscochin.com/train.htm
1098   Ernakulam - Pune (Monday)   -   23.00

According to that page, there's only 1 weekly train from Cochin to Pune.
It's on Monday at 11PM. June 2nd is Monday.

Banzai also pointed out that Allen was going to fly:
Quote
http://www.alivenotdead.com/allanwu

Quote
And when the day's fun is all done, it's time once again to race off to the airport to prepare for the teams to start the next leg!

Allan Wu's blog is up and he has to fly. Hmm.

What about the racers? Do they fly or take a train?

We believe that teams will have to play a bit of cricket in order to get their next clue:

Both the location of PUNE (formerly known as Poona) and the Nehru Stadium location were identified by Boingo almost immediately on 10/30:

Slowhatch also confirmed the location with some License Tag analysis :
Quote
It's Pune, as best I can see it: MH is Maharashtra and 12 is Pune.

Boingo identified this as the Shivaji Rd. & Laxmi Rd. intersection

with this further info:

The pointy building is  labeled as "Mahatma Phule Mandai", and the yellow thingie is probably some sign.
Quote
Mahatma Phule Mandai ( Market )

Mahatma Phule Mandai is situated in the center of Pune City. Because of its location this place is often used for meetings, Conferences, starting point for the Ganesh festival procession etc. This market is well known for getting fresh vegetables, fruits and articles for the Poojas

Fuzzie

banzai helped us  to see the two probable Detours:

Detour 1: Deliver pots

Detour 2:  crush Sugar cane:

Pitstop or waiting for transportation?

TARA flag.

Geoff's left leg has a shadow

One of my friends was able to translate the writing on the truck and help with some of the other pictures:

He was later able to add re the store:
Quote
... pretty sure KU...something--perhaps Kubernath

So the thought is that the Roadblock will have something to do with the wedding turbans. Match one? Find one particular one? We don't have enough to say....

Several of us had a good look around for this location but the actual spot eluded us. We felt that this was probably not a Pitstop since there were no backpacks, but it is possible they dropped them before arriving.

Some of the possible locations for this include the University of Pune:

and the back view of the Physics Building also looked interesting, but not an exact match.

Perhaps the closest matches were found at the "MIT" Maharasha Institute of Technology...

So where else might we see our racers if we still need a Pitstop?

The Aga Khan Palace would be a strong possibility, as would the Palace/Fort of Shanivar Wada, or the temple complexes on Parvati Hill.

The Film and Television Institute could be used, or any of the lovely gardens as well.

I have work comittments in the AM, so may not be able to be here, although I will try!

TarAsiaFan is going to do his best to bring us the Live Updates, and puddin will hopefully be around to help with any of the screencaps!

Anyone with anything to add--please feel free, and if you can see the show LIVE please let us know what is happening!

We of course would like to know:

How do the teams travel to Pune? Train or plane?

Do the Detours come first? We know Ida/Tania do pots and Sam/Vince sugar cane--what about the others?

Where and what is the Roadblock?

Where is the Pitstop?

What is the team order of arrival?

Is it a TBC/NEL/ or Elim?

Who, if any, is eliminated?

For a discussion of the possible NEXT LEG (**spoilers**) you can look here:

http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15379.msg357854.html#msg357854

Although I am now leaning more (spoiler bars) towards Oman, solely since TARA 2 visited Cape Town already.

Y'all have fun, but remember that any discussion of this episode stays here, but discussion of the NEXT episode goes to the SPOILER section, okay?

I guess the U-Turn before the Pitstop already made it clear that this will be a NEL.

AD and Fuzzie might feel bad about getting U-Turned. What can we say about the preview?

calv_10,

Thanks for the nice recap. The one point that is not clear is whether teams got a taxi to Pune at Mumbai airport (this is what I infer from how you wrote about it). An alternative that should have been what they used was to fly from Mumbai to Pune and take the taxi from Pune Airport. Which of these is what really happened?

they took a plane to Mumbai and then a taxi to Pune. i dont think they're aware of a plane straight to Pune. what is shown in the TARA globe screen is the plane going from cochin to mumbai (not pune).

Thanks for the clarification, Calvin. The flights that I predicted as part of combinations connecting through Mumbai in fact terminated on arrival in Mumbai. They are:

AI691 COK BOM 0430 0615

9W402 COK BOM 1300 1440

9W404 COK BOM 1605 1745

So we also have these additional possiblities(that did not have good conncetions to Pune but that doesn't matter now) for COK BOM nonstop:
9W406 0830 1015
9W408 2000 2205
IC162   2020 2210
IT2144 2110 2320

With the listed pitstop release times reported in the 941pm to 1015pm range, it looks like AI691 was the flight of choice. The episode shows AI691 briefly, but then also says that Geoff/Tisha took a different plane than the others, which conflicts with other information. All teams had to be on AI691 or any on another flight would have been behind, which none were. With arrival in Mumbai airport at 0615, taxi arrival in Pune around 9am was a good bet. Ida/Tani said 2 hours, but the taxi service itself said 3 hours. That captures the range of opinions in the ARA3 threads.

I have finally seen episode 9. It was a really good one. I really liked the fact that having specific skills allow teams to move ahead of teams without those skills:

1. On entering Pune, I believe some teams ditched your airport taxi and switched to a local one. It cost money but saved valuable time.

2. On the cricket batsman task, those with athletic skills got out of there probably 20 to 30 minutes quicker than Ida/Tania and Geoff/Tisha.

3. Getting to the next place using the GPS, you wonder how Michael McKay could have devised a task to make this more even in time, but Geoff/Tisha did not get it right the first time and had to try again. This was an example of the "wrong way to do a detour".  Imagine how much fun occurs if teams had to self-navigate with a good local map and them having to direct an auto-rickshaw driver!

4. At SONY World, the luck factor came in. They had to find an English-speaking local who could tell a good joke, not just a feeble one. Some got this on the first try and others had to do it twice ot three times.

5. The turban task was a classic luck-based one with the odds clearly favoring the leading teams reaching it (more on those odds coming below).

6. The CRUSH DETOUR favored the strong and the pretty. Geoff/Tisha did really well on this. Vince/Sam did OK. AD/Fuzzie were struggling on the crushing due to the strength required for the circular movement.

7. The POTS DETOUR was quite predictable. I expected Ida/Tania to do it carefully. They did so they would not have to do it again.

8. The U-Turn involved major luck. Ida/Tania did not have their picture so they could not U-turn Geoff/Tisha. Geoff/Tisha
finished CRUSH just ahead of AD/Fuzzie and were lucky to keep a very small lead over AD/Fuzzie, which allowed them to U-Turn them.

One extra thought concerns the Product Placement nature of the NOKIA and SONY product involvement in ARA3 ep. 9. Some think that product placement is all wrong. I look at it positively as a way of keeping Amazing Races (both U.S. and Asia) on the air. It is blatant to have commercial products essentially used as props, but I can take it. What do you think?

I observed a lot of variation in likeability in the tasks today. I find Ida/Tania to be warm-hearted, easy-going and friendly people. It is easy to watch them. Ad/Fuzzie have a high humor quotient and so they are fun to fun. I find Vince/Sam fairly blah except that Vince is up for anything and Sam frequently hangs back. I do not like Geoff/Tisha as a team because of his behavior(hers is usually exemplary). In episode 9 I observed them not getting the best out of their taxi drivers, but when it came to the CRUSH DETOUR her magnetic smile driving sales and his having enough msucle to handle the production side (although he sold too) were redeeming factors. It should be noted that the crowds observing the tasks appeared to be almost 100% male and certainly the turban-wearers; this gave Tisha an edge.

It's time for some more statistics. I know there is some of RFF that loves statistics!

You know where this applies the most. It is the turban task. There are 4 clues under 50 hats. That is an initial 8% success rate for the first team. Sam/Vince would be above 50% probability of finishing with their 7th try.

Ida/Tania come next and now there are 3 clues under 50 hats(assuming that the winning one was changed out for a Non-correct one and the wearer of it kept in the game. That is a 6% success rate, so it would take a 9th try to be above 50%.

AD/Fuzzie are third and there are 2 clues under 50 hats. That is a 4% success rate, so it would take 13 tries to be above 50%.

Geoff/Tisha have the most daunting task. With 1 clue under 50 hats, that is a 2% success rate and it would take 25 tries to be above 50%.

If we assume that it takes 20 seconds to walk to the next turban, take it off and examine it, it should take on average only 2 1/3 minutes for the first team, 3 minutes for the second, 4 1/3 minutes for the third and 8 1/3 minutes for the last team. That means the first team has a 6 minute average edge over the last team. If the actual cycle time is higher than 20 seconds, then it would be larger.
