ABC's Amazing Race-ish knock off
« on: March 24, 2008, 08:47:47 PM »
I read about a show that ABC has ordered up, people travel the world and compete in challenges in other countries, sounds Amazing Raceish

here:

Casting agents seeking Charlotte talent
SARAH AARTHUN

Is ABC trying to cash in on the success of CBS's "The Amazing Race"?

Casting agents with the network will be in Charlotte this week looking for "spontaneous, adventurous people in their 20s and 30s" to participate in a new reality competition show on ABC, according to C&J casting.

No word on the name of the new show or the concept, but C&J says contestants will be eligible for a significant cash prize and other giveaways by traveling to beat others in the competition adventure show.

Sounds like an "Amazing Race" spinoff to me.

The open casting call will be held at Cans Bar uptown Thursday between 6 and 11 p.m. Applicants must be 21 years of age with a valid U.S. passport.

more on this:

ABC is going abroad for its next reality series.

The network has ordered a new unscripted show from the producer of "Hell's Kitchen" in which Americans go to a foreign country to compete in challenges.

The project has been circulating the creative community under the title "Big in Japan." The title might change because producers are considering several different countries, including Japan. The network has given the show a series order for an unspecified number of episodes.

The series will mix reality and game show elements as contestants adapt to another culture while competing

The project is from executive producer Arthur Smith of A. Smith & Co. ("The Swan," "Kitchen Nightmares").

Is this ABC Big in Japan show the one that has mutated into I Survived a Japanese Gameshow?? If so, it's not quite like the Amazing Race - see below! It does sound funny though, I'll have to catch the couple that already screened online..

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" has a more intriguing premise. Ten
Americans who think they've signed up for just another reality show
are surprised when (a) they're flown to Japan, and (b) they're
immediately thrown into competing in ways they never imagined.

There are challenges such as "Crazy Crane Finds Fluffy Bear" and
"Chicken Butt Scramble," in which "the contestants create their own
version of Japanese scrambled eggs as they attempt to smash goo-filled
oversize eggs with only their butts ... while wearing chicken suits."

The winner gets $250,000.

The entertainment value comes from watching people take monstrous (an
relatively safe) pratfalls. And from the huge humiliation factor.
