We peaches have to stick together
SHAMOKIN — The city is expecting thousands of visitors to kick off Memorial Day weekend again this year as the third-annual Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts takes place Friday and Saturday.
A variety of events starts Friday with the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce sponsoring a chicken barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. The meals will be available near the Independence Fire Company at Market and Independence streets and consists of a half-chicken, baked potato, baked beans, roll and dessert for $7.

After the service, the festival gets in full swing, with more than 80 vendors showing off their goods and services along a four-block stretch of Market Street and a variety of entertainment, events and contests in and around the city.
The exciting “Amazing Coal Cracker Race,”
hosted by former CBS “Amazing Race” contestant Peach Krebs, will have its last-minute registration starting at 9 a.m.; the race starts at 10 a.m. from the corner of Spruce and Market. Teams of two to four members will race through the area, looking for clues at various sites and in search of the $500 first-place prize. The race is sponsored by Peach and Co. Salon, KAV Consulting of Paxinos, Scot’s Lo-Cost and Athletics Etc.
Those looking for a historical perspective in the area will have a number of events to check out, starting with carriage and trolley tours.
