I dont know, is anyone else bothered by what CBS is doing? I'm not having a problem with it but was wondering if I was in the minority.

Not only that, but I have never seen a survivor form alliences along races. Against the sexes, yes. And you are right, this will only last a week or two.

I don't find it offensive at all.  Why don't they protest last season's first tribal twist, I could have seen everyone saying that it promotes sexism and ageism.  Now this season is promoting Racism?  I don't see it.

If anything, it's adding more of the races into a reality show.  In previous seasons, they would just have one male and one female african-american, and same for asians and latinos. I think it's just saying that every race has an equal shot at the grand prize now.

I don't find it offensive either. But I don't believe in ethninticity what so ever so I guess it wouldn't offend me.

My personal opinion I don't know why we faction ourselves into races. We are all humans. Who cares that our biological appearance and culture are different?

But that is just me.

So in other words I don't see any twist in this Survivor.

when they first announced they were gong to seperate the tribes by race i was thinking the same thing they only leave the tribes seperated for a few weeks before they combine them into 2 new tribes.

I still like when the let them get settled and form alliances then go and mix up the tribes i think that is always fun.  :)

I want them to stay together for a couple of weeks though. Unlike in Exile Island where they were in a tribe of 4 for 3 days then they switched it up. Keep the schtick going for an episode or two

Good Grief, the polititians are purdy dang bored to be rallying against Survivor when there;s no justificaton for it!!  They are typical politians...making a big deal out of nothing just to have something else to complain about.  :groan:  I'm sure they must have important stuff to deal with!!!   (:;)  :knuckles:  :furious: {{{}
The least they could do is wave the American flag  :flag: & rally FOR CBS for always including several races in the show.  If polititians cared, they'd do some research into Survivor history and find out it has never been racial...no way.  They could also ask cbs what the deal is, instead of A$$uming it will be playing races against each other!!

From the FWIW department...

the only thing i am hoping for is that we get more people winning things this time.  it does get quite old when the same tribe/person wins everything.  Although last season i was voting for terri and he did need to win everything just to stay safe.

I expect a full report, Trevor.

The politicians organizing this are just trying to get their names in the paper.  It's absurd that they have nothing better to do with their time.

Well you can tell that these politicians have nothing better to talk about.

Before this Survivor they argued that ethnical representation lacked on Survivor.

Then for this Survivor they got 5 people from 4 different races on the show and the politicians said "What the hell are you doing that is raciest." Pull the show.

Well they gave you enough ethnical representation so quit complaining.

Well really at this point there is nothing they can do because its already been filmed and finished what are they suspose to do now?  redo everything.  people just need to get a life.  if they dont like it they dont have to watch it.  there are so many other issues that are much more pressing that could be addressed

They think they should pull the season. Yeah right. Like CBS is going to spend thousands and millions of dollars to make a season of Survivor then just pull the whole thing. They are going to show it regardless and prey that they hit this out of the park but there is no chance in hell they are going to pull it.

its all kind of crazy for what is going to end up being overall only a few weeks anyway.  And if you look at the normal tendency's of people we all kind of flock to live and work pretty close to where large groups of people who are the same ethnics as us anyway.

The whole point is that won't be a race issue. Each tribe will be voting one of "their own" out until a merge. I feel that it will be some kind of social experiment to see if race stays with race, or if it's who just likes who. At first glance it looks like a race issue, but it's really not. It just shows how everyone can get along no matter what the race is. I think it will win out in the end, and the sponsors that pulled out will regret it.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT'S STILL JUST THE END OF THE DAY!

Singapore newspaper :
FANS of Survivor, here's some bad news.

You may not be able to catch your favourite reality TV series on Channel 5 this season.

MediaCorp, which has shown the programme over the last six years, has decided to take a cautious wait-and-see approach to this season's instalment - Survivor: Cook Islands.

The reason? The show has attracted a firestorm of protest and outrage because of a change in its format.

For the first portion of the programme, the 20 contestants (above) competing for the US$1 million ($1.6m) prize will be divided into four tribes by race - whites, blacks, Hispanics and Asians.

This is the first time the tribes are being separated according to race.

Previously, the groupings were usually random but contestants have been divided according to age and gender.

In the US, everyone from soapbox politicians to community leaders to pop culture pundits have called for a boycott of, as one newspaper wrote, the 'race wars'.

Several New York council members and activists have even demanded that CBS network cancel the show altogether, which is scheduled to start airing in the US on Thursday.

A MediaCorp spokesman told The New Paper in an e-mail statement that viewers here will not be able to catch the upcoming edition because it 'gives prominence to racial issues and racial sensitivities by dividing the contestants along racial lines'.

The New Paper learnt that the decision was made by MediaCorp's internal censors so as to avoid receiving potential complaints from members of the public.

The spokesman added: '(The show) has already drawn strong criticism in the US.

'As Singapore's national broadcaster, we need to treat issues of race, including racial stereotyping, with utmost sensitivity.

'Accordingly, Channel 5 will monitor the series' development (and how it's received in the US) before making a decision on the broadcast of Survivor: Cook Islands.'

Over the past six years, the series' 12 seasons - except for the inaugural instalment - have been telecast direct off satellite over Channel 5.

Naturally, Survivor fans here are disappointed.

Marketing manager Patrick Lim, 32, lamented that just when the 'boring' series is getting a 'refreshing twist', he won't get to watch it.

But he accepts MediaCorp's stance, adding: 'Arts Central faced complaints from people over religious sensitivities when it showed some The Da Vinci Code documentaries, even though most of us didn't think it was a big issue. So it's hard to tell who'll be up in arms over such things.'

Some Survivor fans The New Paper spoke to believe that for sensitivity, MediaCorp should give this season a miss.

Civil servant Charlene Chua, 23, said if it is aired, she probably wouldn't watch it.

'I think the show will only end up perpetuating stereotypes,' she said.

Mr J.D Morgan, a 34-year-old salesman, agreed, saying: 'This race skew is going to just fall back on stereotypes and that is going to be tragic. Right now the whole world is talking about unity and this TV show is dealing with segregation.'

However, Mr Tan PK, a 66-year-old retiree, feels that 'banning' the show is unnecessary.

Local audiences won't take it as seriously as the Americans because 'the races (whites, blacks and Hispanics) hardly exist in Singapore', he added.

He said: 'The topic is touchy but it's under control here.

'Singapore audiences are mature enough now. We shouldn't just focus on the race thing, but keep an open mind. We should treat it as a show, for its entertainment value.'

'SOCIAL EXPERIMENT' Ironically, Survivor has been criticised in the past for not casting enough minorities.

According to host Jeff Probst, this season's 'social experiment' celebrates ethnic pride and is supposed to silence the naysayers.

He also denied that the concept had caused several prominent sponsors, including General Motors, Home Depot, P&G, Coca-Cola and Campbell's Soup, to pull out.

He told The Boston Herald: 'A lot of people who have never seen Survivor have absolutely no idea what they're condemning, and are using this as a platform.

'I think if people give it a chance, they are going to be surprised at the results... I think you'll see a freshness.'

But is this freshness merely a front for boosting ratings?

As the market gets flooded with dozens of reality shows and the novelty for them diminishes, ethnicity seems to be the new low that the shows are exploiting to lure viewers.

Reality shows like the Emmy-winning The Amazing Race and America's Next Top Model are also playing up the race factor in their most recent seasons. (See report at right.)

Already, critics have blasted Survivor producers for using the race card to boost ratings for the flagging franchise.

Some Singaporeans like Mr Tan argue that there might be some educational merit behind Survivor: Cook Islands' gimmick.

'It may open our eyes to how different races behave with each other.'

He also insists that when the tribes eventually merge and get mixed up after a couple of episodes, race will not factor in the competition anymore.

Public relations consultant Dora Yip also hopes MediaCorp will reconsider its ruling, as it risks losing audiences to free video-sharing Internet services like YouTube if it is even a couple of episodes behind the US telecast.

Said the 30-year-old: 'I didn't like the concept initially because it seemed exploitative. But it could generate meaningful debate if they don't play up the stereotypes but debunk them instead'.

- Additional reporting by Sheela Narayanan

I guess I'm the lone person that does have a problem with it. I do think they are crossing the line. But I also think they did it for exactly this reason. They wanted to create a controversy to get people to tune in. I didn't appreciate the ageism thing or sexism thing they've also done in the past.

I do think the show is growing stale and they're trying all these gimmicks to keep it going. I think instead of the gimmicks they need to pick people that will grab the viewers attentions. A lot of these shirtless reality hunks and stick thin chicks meld into your mind and you can't even remember their name afterwards.

In the past Survivor had some great characters like: Richard Hatch, Sue Hawk, Rudy, Rufus, etc. They need some more people like that.

They can divide the tribe up into birth signs, but unless the people on the show have personalities that will grab the viewers attention, what's the point?

I think the spirit of this season is to celebrate the strength and agility of all races.  Especially to show that what it really boils down to is developing relationships and cooperation with others--no matter the race.  I think seasons past have shown that not one race is better than the other.  One thing I have noticed already, is that it is building a better appreciation for their own cultures and where they have come from.  (Example:  The asian Tribe thought Cao Boi was crazy, but developed a better respect for him after helping a fellow tribe member.  The african american tribe and hispanic tribe also noticed how rich their cultures were.)  It appeared that the caucasian tribe was a little taken back with how things were going.  I think all cultures should celebrate their heritage and this is one way that can draw attention to respecting each other and different cultures.  Good luck to all tribes on Survivor this season!!

mabye we need a few less bueatiful people and more of the real life down to earth people.

and i want to know how on a deserted island with susposedly supplies do they keep there teeth so white and shinny?  and there hair never looks unwashed or unkempt.  the guys do grow beards but how come the girls never get hairy armpits or legs?

and on the early shows when they mostly only had rashioned amounts of rice you could deffently see the people loosing weight but on the shows of late i havent noticed the drastic weightloss

I agree. Some of the more interesting player have been real looking people. Like Twyla, who was a hoot.

Strangely enough those are usually the ones I root for more than the pretty people.

i would have really liked to see her stay around longer. she could have made it really inestering to watch later in the game.

I like that guy on the aisa team the one from vietnam helping the yul guy with his headache.  i think if he can stay around he will be interesting to watch.

I also liked bruce alot and wished that he hadnt gotten sick last season  they need to let him and mike from surivor africa have a second chance

Michael was from Survivor Australian Outback not Survivor Africa.

And who knows maybe they did offer Michael and Bruce a second chance they just turned it down.

I agree if Cao Boi stays for a while he is going to be interesting to watch. I just don't think he is going to win though. To me he seems like the Rupert of Survivor Cook Islands
